Magic Moments A Party to Remember at Terra Toys in Austin

Trade Wind by Kevin Fahy
I hear a lot these days about how great the economy is, with corporate profits through the roof and the unemployment rate dropping like a stone. I’m not completely convinced. There is also a general impression among Americans that the stock market is soaring. I don’t usually talk about the market very much, because it can change direction at any moment, and I think it’s important to remember that it is just one facet of a very complicated economy, but it does sometimes send messages to which we should listen. It was actually 2017 that saw the big run-up in the stock market, as Wall Street anticipated a major tax cut. We could argue all day about whether or not the cuts were the right thing to do, but the market was quite correct in assuming that they would happen, and that they would add fuel to the economy. By February of this year, the market had moved on to the next big thing, and this thing was not so appetizing. In just two weeks, the Dow fell more than 3,200 points, or 12 percent. The reason the market went down was basically the same reason it had gone up, except in reverse. The president was taking action to fulfill another of his campaign promises, albeit a
promise that most people hoped he had not really meant. For more than a century, the United States got along without any income tax. The federal government derived most of its income from tariffs, and financially it was a very successful arrangement. In 1882, for example, the country ran a budget surplus of 36 percent, but there was a growing consensus that the system was fundamentally flawed. A tariff is a tax which is applied to certain imported products, or to imports in general. Although it is initially paid by the importer, ultimately it is passed along to consumers in the form of higher prices on those products. It’s considered to be a “regressive” form of taxation, because it is not adjusted according to income. In fact, it hits the poor especially hard because they tend to be more dependent upon cheaper imports. It is a tax that can also be advantageous to the wealthy, or at least to some of them. Tariffs are usually designed to protect domestic manufacturers (or farmers, or miners) from lower priced foreign competitors. In the case of the U.S. those domestic suppliers are privately owned, and the owners can benefit enormously from protection. During the 2016 presidential race, Donald Trump said that, (continued on page 6)

if elected, he would impose a 45-percent tariff on everything imported from China. His rationale was that such a move would protect jobs in the U.S. and bring back jobs that have been lost. There are, to be sure, some reasons to be concerned about our trade relationship with China. We currently run an annual deficit of around $600 billion, and several million American jobs have indeed migrated to China over the past two decades. China does protect some of its own manufacturers from American competition, and it allows the theft of intellectual property to continue at an alarming rate. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, the toy industry is one of the most extreme examples of the China syndrome. Around 80 percent of the toys sold in the United States are imported, and China is by far the biggest source. In 1992, less than half of the imported toys came from China, but by 2008 that share had grown to more than 90 percent. If we’re talking about jobs, however, there are other statistics to keep in mind. One of them relates to technology, or what economists call productivity, the ability to produce more products with fewer people. At least 85 percent of the job losses in this country were the result of modernization. The jobs didn’t go anywhere, and we actually produce more now than we ever have. The jobs that did go to China didn’t get there because of unfair trade policies. They went because wages there were lower, allowing manufacturers to compete on
price. If those jobs should ever leave China (assuming technology doesn’t obviate them), it will likely be for the same reason. China now has the highest average pay for factory workers, at $424 per month, of any country in developing Asia. The average in India is $230, Vietnam is at $185, and Bangladesh is $100. The U.S. average is around $3,800, and we are basically at full employment in this country. Do we really want or need those jobs back? The real issue is not the jobs that have left, but the money that continues to flow from the U.S. to nations around the world. There is a perception among many Americans that the trade deficit is caused at least in part by countries that assign high tariffs to American products. The president has been reinforcing this notion every chance he gets, insisting that the U.S. has been taken advantage of by virtually everyone. It made me curious about how high tariffs really are, so I did a little digging. If you average out the levy on all the products imported into the United States, the tariff equals 1.6 percent. That happens to be the exact same average tariff on goods brought into Great Britain, Germany and France. Japan is slightly lower, at 1.4 percent. China is indeed much higher, at 3.5 percent, but not as high as Mexico, which has an average tariff of 4.4 percent. Still, those numbers don’t sound nearly as severe as we have been lead to believe. Where are the 100-percent markups that we keep hearing about? Well, it turns out that such things are real but very rare,
and every country seems to have a few. The United States, for example, has a 25-percent tariff on light trucks, making it virtually impossible for overseas manufacturers to be competitive. That would explain why Toyota builds its pickup trucks in Texas. Among our major trading partners, the lowest average tariff was .8 percent, or half that of our own. Ironically, the country with that rate is Canada. The constitution grants Congress the power to regulate foreign trade, but the executive branch has gotten around that fact by arguing that the control of some products is vital to our national security. Under that rationale the first new tariff to take effect was on steel and aluminum, and the country most affected was Canada. The Canadians took offense at being construed as a security risk to the U.S. and promised to retaliate accordingly. A nasty war of words followed. But don’t worry. As soon as we get our friends straightened out, we’re going to deal with China. Just this morning, the White House released a list of Chinese products, representing about $50 billion in trade, which will be hit with a 25-percent tariff. Toys don’t seem to be included, but stay tuned. Trade wars have a way of escalating. They also have something else in common. Nobody ever wins.

Classic, Fun, and
Beautiful story by Maria Bucci photos by Cisco Gamez

t’s been 40 years since Rinalda and Charles Edwards opened Terra Toys in Austin, Texas. When asked to name the secret behind the store’s longevity, their daughter Sylvia, general manager, replied, “We have a consistent buying policy that places a high value on toys that are classic, fun, and beautiful. Plus, we work our butts off! “My parents are the hardest-working people I know – it’s a delightful thing to watch,” she adds. “It’s not easy but they make it look easy. They are great partners and have made good choices along the way.” Play is a priority “We sell toys that are an anchor for what play means to a child: a colorful spinning top, a bouncy ball, building blocks, puppets. This is what defines our store,” Sylvia explains. “Kids need toys to practice for real life. Playing with toys fosters imagination and creative expression, and builds important skills they need as adults. “Parents have asked me to direct them to the hottest toy for a 2-year-old. I tell them that 2-year-olds think everything is interesting, so start them off with a spinning top. It will be as novel to them as it was to a 2-year-old 100 years ago. Our philosophy is to get them to touch and experience as many magical things as they can.” To that end, the store features 373 different puppets for children from 18 months to 5 years old. “Puppets offer kids a chance to role play, learn empathy, and discover their place in the world,” Sylvia continues. “Balls, science kits, and baby dolls are also popular.” Current top sellers include family games. “Playing board games is just a great way to get to know your kids,” she says.

When we talked to Sylvia Edwards (left) in June, Terra Toys had just held its 20th Annual Fairy Tea Party. The employees wear costumes and so do the visitors – about 750 children and adults. “The kids love it,” she says. “We get a photo booth, there are raffles with prizes, and we serve cookies and homemade peppermint tea.” Does business usually increase during the two-day celebration? Sylvia checked and this year it did, about 20 percent. “That’s unusual,” she says. “Typically, people don’t shop because of all the commotion! There may be an uptick a few weeks later, but that’s not why we do it,” she adds. “It’s just one of the ways we give back to the community.”
Stay with what works “Everything at Terra Toys meets the same basic criteria. Some toys may not be beautiful but they are classic or fun. This is our compass even when trends come along.” Sylvia’s mother has been the buyer since the beginning. To fill the store’s 12,000 square feet of display space, she works with more than 2,000 vendors and buys thousands of toys each year. There is a lot of variety, but her approach has remained the same for 40 years. “She buys toys that are classic, timeless and fun. This has kept Terra Toys in the middle of the pendulum during economic swings and trends that

come and go,” says Sylvia. Sometimes the Edwards’ watch a trend and wait to see if it becomes a staple. “Generally, we do not dedicate space or money to trendy things,” she explains, “but we do take into consideration customer requests and special items that have a classic twist.” One example is a Batmobile car made from die-cast metal from YW Toys. “It’s a great little car and it comes with a Batman doll. There aren’t that many dolls for boys and so we went for it. Plus, Batman is a classic superhero, so it does fall into the buying policy.” Merchandise is organized by theme rather than age. “Our toys are arranged based on a child’s interest. It’s a labyrinth of cars and trucks, fairies and

pirates, dinosaurs, arts and crafts, outdoor games, and puzzles. Age is relative.” This philosophy comes through in the way toys are displayed and employees are trained. There is an “open” version of every packaged toy, and items to demo are placed all over the store. “When a customer is interested in a particular toy, they can try it out here. It mitigates the returns,” laughs Sylvia. Sound infrastructure Rinalda and Charles met as students at the University of Texas. “Even before they met they were collecting toys, so that was a shared interest,” their daughter explains. They didn’t want to work for anyone, so when they
graduated, the two established a snow-cone business, and they built their stand themselves. When sales slowed during the winter, Charles made wooden animals using scrap wood and his band saw. “Everything they made came from wood, from the earth, so they called the business Terra [Latin for “earth”] Toys.” In 1976 they were wholesaling their wares. Their specialty was pull toys, and the most popular item was a wobbly dinosaur with asymmetrical wheels. “My parents made all sorts of toys and their catalog was hand-drawn by my mother,” recalls Sylvia. Two years later in Austin’s up-and-coming SoCo district, they (continued on page 12)

opened a storefront. Everything in it was handmade. Soon they added products from other vendors; Steiff and Madame Alexander were among the first. In 2004, rising rents pushed Terra Toys to Allendale in the north-central part of the city. The established neighborhood is safe, quiet and suburban – perfect for families with small children, with parks and schools. “It was a good move for us,” says Sylvia. “There is good parking, and good visibility.” Branching out To meet the needs of its shoppers, the Edwards’ added a children’s clothing store-within-a-store to Terra Toys called Dragon Snap. Later, they added Kiddo Shoes. In 2015, they opened a coffee bar and art gallery next door. “Our goal is to accommodate our customers and keep them shopping,” explains Sylvia. “We are big supporters of the organic movement and local products: we feature the work of local artists in the

gallery, Fair Trade coffee from beans roasted here in Austin, and American-made clothing and shoes.” Despite competition from Amazon and big box stores, the business is doing well. “We are at an interesting phase of growth right now,” reports Sylvia. “We could open up more stores or streamline what we do here.” Sylvia Edwards was born and raised at Terra Toys. Literally. She was delivered by a midwife in the back of the store, and lived there with her parents and sisters for much of her childhood. “I got to sleep in a toy store!” she laughs. As the oldest of three girls, Sylvia was the hustler; the daughter most interested in the family business. Her sisters, both artists, live in other cities. “I like to think of Terra Toys as my older sister,” she laughs. “And my goal is to keep her going for another 40 years!”

“Change happens. Change must happen. If you aren’t evolving with the times, you’ll atrophy into nothing.” by Phil Wrzesinski

efore I started my full-time career in the toy industry, I worked for a YMCA camp. Storer Camps is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. I’ve been a part of the camp for 35 of those years as a camper, camp counselor, support staff, program director, volunteer, and parent of campers. The camp’s infrastructure has changed over the years. Back in 1918, the first campers stayed in canvas tents. A decade later, small cabins were built. Upgrades to those were made a few decades later. Free-standing bathrooms were built to replace the old outhouses and today, each lodge has its own bathrooms and air conditioning. Many peers from my camper and counselor days in the ’70s and ’80s lament how camp isn’t camp anymore. I don’t lament it at all. Retailer Ann Kienzle, past chair of ASTRA’s board of directors, said it best during her address at Marketplace & Academy last year: “I’ve heard from some longtime ASTRA members that ASTRA doesn’t look the same as it did 15 years ago. You should be proud of that fact. If it looked the same as it did 15 years ago, then you should be disappointed.” The key is knowing what to change.
14 edplay.com • • • • • July/August 2018
DON’T change your mission or core values I wrote an essay for the camp to help the alumni understand the positive aspects of all the changes. I had a unique perspective because I got to go back and teach sailing there last summer. While the infrastructure has changed, the mission of the camp has not. The mission to promote a healthy mind, body, and spirit remains. For ASTRA, the mission has also remained the same: to promote a healthy specialty toy retailing industry. Your business is all about your core values and mission. Those should remain constant. My core values are fun, helpful, education, and nostalgia. They are my North Star, the guiding light, the sword in the stone, the never-changing foundation of the business. Everything I did as a retailer at Toy House and everything I do now revolves around those values. Every service you offer, every product you sell, every person you hire should be consistent with the values that drive you and your business. One more thing you should never change is putting the customer first. Everything you do should be about the customer first and your business second. That never goes out of style.
Yes, change all of these Here is how to look at everything else and decide what to change.
Services Every year you should evaluate the services you offer your customers. Are they still valid and important? Are they customer-centric? Do they put the customer’s needs above your own? Can they be improved? Part of your goal for customer service is to figure out what your customer expects and then exceed those expectations. That is what causes surprise and delight. That is what gets customers to brag about your business to their friends and bring those friends with them on their next visit. The services you’ve been offering for several years are now part of the expectation. What can you do extra that wasn’t expected? Merchandising Move things around. Shake them up. To keep your store fresh and exciting, you need to change the layout, change the fixtures, and highlight different products all the time. Your moves don’t have to be major. Simply redoing all your endcaps each month can be enough of a change to get customers wanting to shop more frequently to see what’s new. Changing your displays helps you find the dead zones in your merchandising plan; the one endcap or area where product goes to die. The more you change your merchandising, the quicker you’ll spot those areas. You can change the traffic flow to drive (continued on page 52)

Products You should be changing your product mix by at least 20 percent each year. Keep your bestsellers and must-haves but figure out the bottom 20 percent of your product mix, dump it, and try something completely new. Look for new categories; new versions of older products isn’t really change. Not only does changing your product mix keep your store fresh and cutting-edge, it helps you find new, better, more profitable merchandise that might quickly become bestsellers. Did you know that Mattel changes more than 75 percent of its Barbie lineup every year? A classic toy like Barbie goes through a major makeover every single year.

ur trending themes in toys are chosen six times each year by a group of 28 retailers from around the country. Which stores respond, and how many respond overall, varies from month to month. Even though different retailers responded to this survey compared to the last one, and many brand-new themes were added to the list, our Top 10 is nearly the same this issue as last issue. There are some important changes, however. Fairies have been very slowly trending downward, and for the first time have fallen off the list. They were replaced by toilet-related items, which have been in and out of our top 10 for the last few months. Moving up this time is “girl empowerment,” which broke onto the list at number 10 but is now seventh. Another theme that has moved up (but it may be seasonally) is mermaids. They have jumped from fifth place to second. Going the wrong way is llamas. This one is a bit of a surprise for me – it had continued to trend upward until now, but has dropped from fourth to eighth. Themes that have been gaining traction (we expect at least one of these to make our next top 10 list) are donuts, flamingos, and rainbows. One of my retailers (thank you Christine Osborne) suggested that in addition to doing a regular survey of themes, I also find out what categories are trending well. I did that by sending a list of 25 categories to stores to rank.
Twenty-one stores responded. Here are the results. The most popular category by far was active play. It’s one that retailers have come to rely upon, and many have been steadily expanding it in their stores. I often refer to the sub-category of this as “anything that flies through the air,” like light-up footballs, balls for bouncing on the water, R/C items, Frisbees, dart sets, soccer balls, toy parachutes, archery sets, paddle ball and cornhole. Finishing a strong second was novelty/impulse. Parents are looking for something that’s inexpensive and can keep their kids occupied – in the car, waiting in line, or at a restaurant. The toy industry as a whole has responded well to this, with some great innovation. Toysmith, with items like the Superstacking Tops and Robot Claw, continues to be a leader in this category. A bit of a surprise for me was what was next, in third place. It is plush, with companies like Jelly Cat, Douglas, and Squishable coming up with fantastic new plush items over the last few years. A category that is often associated with gift stores and boutiques, it has now grown immensely in toy stores. Ty and Aurora, too, are making a strong showing. Rounding out the top six trending categories were craft kits, art supplies, and tween. Interesting to me were the categories at the bottom: All of them were very popular at some point in the last 10 to 15 years. It’s interesting to see the ebb and flow of the kinds of items consumers are looking for.

Modern design Clever Arik Klar from Detroit’s Toyology stores is the man behind Stax magnetic building shapes (1). Six sets of small plastic squares and triangles are organized by colorways – there’s a Black set and a cloudy “Ghost” set, plus assorted Pinks, a set of Greens, of Blues and a set of Reds. Each comes with a metal tray for building upon. At the booth of his nearly two-year-old company On Trend Goods, Aric also demoed Boom Brick (2), a sleek cell phone speaker; and The Game of Space (3), in which players build with magnetic rocks. Are chickens the new sloths? I fell in love with Henley (4), one of three plush chickens from Manhattan Toy. They were not the only chicks in the booth. Erica Roberts, VP of business development, and I admired the Rocking Musical Chicken (5) for kids ages 12 months-plus. The sturdy wooden hen is equipped with cymbals, a xylophone, maracas, two drums with mallets and a washboard. Its large size (12.25 by 7.25 by 10.5 inches) and colorful folk-art decorations make it a show stopper. (It was named Best Musical Toy of Toy Fair 2018 by the editors of Parents magazine.) Bright shiny things HearthSong’s booth was busy, and no wonder? I know I couldn’t resist taking a seat under the blue lights of the Aquaglow Jellyfish Hideaway (6). The fun and flashy theme of the show seemed to be “reversible sequin items” (7). Helio (8) is a good idea for a night light. It doubles as a teacher. Invented by a dad to help his son learn sight words, the system shines light from a colored “base station” through themed disks that project images on the ceiling. ith The Big Easy as a backdrop, 500 exhibitors dazzled buyers at ASTRA’s annual Marketplace & Academy June 10 through 13. For three full days, 1,301 buyers viewed products and placed orders for the upcoming holiday season. Buyers represented 537 stores, including “traditional” specialty toy stores, museum stores, gift stores, children’s clothing stores, the craft chain Joanne Stores and even a store specializing in children’s haircuts. There was a lot of incentive to place orders – nearly 400 exhibitors offered special deals (discounts, free freight, dating, and more), and with each order written, the buyer earned a raffle ticket to win valuable industry prizes. Given the trade show’s midyear timing, many of

the products on display had been presented earlier in 2018 at other trade venues. Even so, ASTRA’s New Product Nook featured nearly 70 products, some of which were making their debut. These neverbefore-seen products support the show’s mission to help independent retailers find merchandise that differentiates their stores and makes their brands unique. For more information about the products exhibited at ASTRA, turn to “Retailers Recommend” on page 18, “Editor’s Picks” on page 20, and visit edplay.com. Learning Marketplace & Academy brings together nearly 3,000 toy people each year to play and talk and listen and look. Through that process, challenges are

identified, issues are addressed, solutions are found. The intended outcome is that individual attendees will head home to their businesses equipped with more of what they need to succeed than they left with. That includes good ideas, new products, and new customers. With the Toys “R” Us final closing just a few weeks away, and the first “retail apocalypse” headlines just a few months behind them, attendees seemed to need some kind of reassurance. have what it takes to succeed? And if they don’t, how can they change? I think these questions weighed heaviest on the owners of older stores; the folks who have steered a course through past disruptions (Zany Brainy, a recession, the advent of Target’s toy aisles) only to be flummoxed by Amazon and social media. Luckily, the most and best advice to be had at ASTRA was for retailers. Here are just a few of the recommendations I heard from the show’s expert speakers. Commit to being your community’s epicenter for play. As a play evangelist, turn up the volume and turn your store into the best place to find good play tools, sound play advice and plenty of fun. Crank up your credibility by becoming a Certified Play Expert. Take ASTRA’s course either online or in person at the two-day workshop at Marketplace & Academy each year. In New Orleans, 11 people received their credentials to bring the total of ASTRA-certified Play Experts to 91.

Use your brick-and-mortar space for more than just selling toys. Make it an interactive base of discovery; a venue that offers people something new and exciting every time they come in – and it doesn’t have to be product. Treat shoppers like visitors, and make sure your space appeals to all five senses. Welcome shoppers as if they are visitors. Treat them like valued friends and cultivate relationships. Be active and visible in your support of your neighborhood, town or city. It can set a good example for your youngest customers, be the cement that binds all-important relationships, and help you stand out from your competitors. In New Orleans, ASTRA was the role model by organizing the first “Mighty Together I Volunteer Program.” Before the show, Marketplace attendees traveled to a local school to paint, organize classrooms and the library, and help with grounds maintenance. In the exhibit hall, everyone was invited to the ASTRA booth where 1,000 empty backpacks sat waiting to be filled with school supplies donated by Alex Brands, Crayola, Faber-Castell, Gund, Learning Resources and OOLY. IT’s TIME!
To Write Content That Attracts and Engages by Tina Manzer
A
fter listening to the speakers at ASTRA’s Marketplace & Academy, it became clear that it’s time – absolutely it’s time – for all of us to create and “broadcast” content that draws consumers into our business. Experts call it “inbound marketing” and define it as “attracting customers through relevant and helpful content, and adding value at every stage in the customer’s buying journey.” Brian Halligan, CEO of inbound marketing and sales software company HubSpot, coined the term. He also said, “People shop and learn in a whole new way compared to just a few years ago, so marketers need to adapt or risk extinction.” The speakers at ASTRA basically said the same, and encouraged attendees to blog and post on social media to • Grow their reach virally, • Improve the visibility of their website in search engines, • Create massive buzz and consistent referral traffic, and • Drive sales or leads. So what’s stopping you? The content itself, for one thing. Creating stories that help customers love and trust you may be easy if you have the resources of Unum or Suzuki or the Rock
& Roll Hall of Fame (all HubSpot software users). But with everything else specialty toy storeowners have to do, they’re too tired to take on one more new thing. (I know. But you have to.) For independent retailers who feel invisible in the sea of choices today, do it to be found, says Justin Champion, HubSpot Academy’s content marketing professor and author of the book, Inbound Content. Customers want to find you – an estimated 88 percent of consumers pre-research their purchases online before pulling the trigger either online or in-store. By sharing content with them – blog posts, white papers, emails, social media posts – you can show them the way to your store. “When your content is consistently helpful, relevant, and compelling, people will connect with you and your business,” Champion says. “They’ll also trust you.” To get there, you must be able to write content that’s engaging and persuasive enough to pull readers in and keep them hooked. Here, from Champion’s book, are a few helpful tips for writing simple, clear and compelling content that you can post on your website, in emails, on social media. For inspiration, visit the blogs we mention. Start with an attention-grabbing headline Great headlines are specific, make a promise, and prompt people to read the piece now. Try the how-to

format (“Boys’ and Girls’ Toys: How do They Stack Up, and Who Does the Stacking?” from fatbraintoys.com), the list format (“9 Toys for Exercising Your Brain” also from Fat Brain), or the negative-angle format (“Why You Shouldn’t Wait ’til December to Start Christmas Shopping”). Make sure the tone is relevant to your readers – should it be serious and authoritative, fun and personable, quirky and humorous, or uplifting? Educate them Create a detailed buyer persona – if you know for whom you’re writing, you’ll understand their challenges, pain points, how they learn, and their goals.
26 edplay.com • • • • • July/August 2018
Then, create content that teaches them about a topic (“Eco Myth Busted: Are Paper Bags Really Greener Than Plastic?” from bettertoystore.wordpress.com) or improves a skill (“Five Steps to Get the Kids Outside” from scarymommy.com). Don’t rehash a conversation, add to it To cut through the clutter, your content should add something new and be of higher quality or more comprehensive than what already exists. It should answer readers’ questions about the subject and include the most recent and relevant data for support (“Talking With Kids About #MeToo” from
blog.nemours.org). Research what already exists on the subject and ask yourself what’s missing. Write the way people search If your target reader searches for “play” not “toys,” you’ll naturally want to use the former in your headline and content. Use keyword research to guide you, but always default to what sounds natural and interesting to your audience. Settle on one core idea A clear piece of writing should make one main point, and then everything else in the post should support it (“A Fun
MAGNETIC BUILDING SHAPES
MAGNETIC BUILDING SHAPES
Idea for Movie Nights” from cupofjo.com). When you begin, identify that subject and how the reader will benefit. Put it at the top of your draft. Support your brand messaging, values, and strategy Think carefully about the words you use, the tone, the subject matter, and the details you provide in your content. Every aspect should reinforce the reader’s view of who your brand is and why they should want to know you better. Here’s an example from rosencrown.blogspot.com. There is a mother I watch who has a child on her lap and she holds the child’s long hair in her hand. It fills her fist, a limp rope. The mother is absent minded; exposing the child’s neck is an unconscious instinct. Cool the child: lift the hair. Like other parent-child touching, this gesture is so soft and common it is maybe unfelt, like one’s own sweater against one’s own skin. But watching her, I wonder how long it has been since I have felt that exactly: the weight of someone else’s hair in my hand. A long time. I would like to feel it now. Today, I felt the weight of a handful of cilantro. I wonder if it’s similar. Give it a relevant call to action Encourage readers to interact with your store by asking them to share your content, leave a comment, subscribe to your newsletter, or visit your store. (“If this is your first visit to happyhooligans.ca, I’d love for you to pop over and LIKE us on Facebook. I update my page daily with easy and affordable arts, crafts and play ideas.”) Ask for it directly, and make the conversion process as seamless as possible. “These skills will help your words cut through the noise and stand out,” concludes Champion. “If you can sharpen your writing so it speaks clearly to your intended audience, you’ll get their attention, earn their trust, and win their business.” As HubSpot Academy’s content marketing professor, Justin teaches people to grow a successful business through content marketing best practices. He lives and works full-time from the road in his Airstream and DIYed truck camper, and wrote his book during his inbound content workshop roadshow in 2017. Follow him at instagram.com/wildwewander.

Our toys are designed with a simple, old school wooden style. We believe that kid’s toys should of course, be fun. But we also believe they should be made responsibly and sustainably using only the highest quality materials available, with attention paid to the smallest detail. And we believe they should be made in the United States where quality and safety can be ensured throughout the production life cycle. Everything we use to make our toys - every sourced material, every tool and every supplier we use is American. See ad on page 6 See our product on page 29

industry news Toy manufacturers are making inroads in circularity and sustainability with new materials and green initiatives. LEGO, for instance, is rolling out a new message on its packaging for U.S. consumers this year that provides clear guidance on how to responsibly recycle the package. While the majority of its packaging is cardboard or paper, some contains single-use disposable plastics, which are not sustainable, and in some cases cannot be recycled by consumers. The company announced in April that they are aiming for 100-percent sustainable packaging by 2025. Many companies, like Two Bros Bows, for example, eschew plastic packaging altogether and opt for simple, recyclable brown cardboard … or no packaging at
all, just a tag. Other companies are using new and innovative materials to make toys. In January, ecoBirdy in Belgium introduced a line of designer furniture for kids made entirely from recycled plastic toys. “We found that plastic toys use plastic more intensively than other consumer goods: 80 percent of plastic toys end up in landfills, incinerators or in the ocean,” said company cofounders Joris Vanbriel and Vanessa Yuan. “By giving old plastic new life, our aim is to free our ecosystem from its pernicious impact.” In our last issue, we reported on Hasbro’s partnership with TerraCycle, a company that specializes in hard-torecycle materials. During a pilot toy-recycling program, consumers in the contiguous
U.S. can collect and send their Hasbro toys and games to TerraCycle for free, where they will be recycled into materials that can be used to construct play spaces, flower pots, and park benches. Denmark-based Dantoy makes innovative, colorful and safe toys from recyclable bioplastics (see the AMEP ad on page 27); and part of the appeal of products from Luke’s Toy Factory is that they are made using sawdust reclaimed from U.S. furniture manufacturers. By incorporating sawdust, the company is able to use 30 percent less plastic than traditional plastic toys (see the ad on page 6).

By combining this with our successful product ranges, including Wahu, trampolines, Rocket Fishing Rod and more, we’ve firmly established our position as a market leader in the category.” Tucker Founder and President Mike Goldman, noted, “All international distributor agreements will remain in effect and retailers will continue to be serviced by their existing distributors. international markets in 2019. Haywire was founded in 2005 by Barbara and Michael Fisher. Since then, the company has produced dozens of games directed at helping kids develop their fine- and gross-motor skills, reading, early math and criticalthinking skills. In 2017, Haywire broadened its scope with the hilarious trivia game, Are You Dumber than a Box of Rocks? to provide entertaining and learning for the entire family. “I hope that the rest of the world enjoys Flickin’ Chicken as much as I do, and who doesn’t like a good game of Shaboom?” asked University Games’ cofounder Bob Moog.
Michael Fisher added, “We look forward to our collaboration with University Games to broaden our reach internationally and expand our mission to help kids learn and develop as people.” Along with their creative team, Michael and Barbara Fisher will continue to be active in the game industry under Haywire’s sister company, Grand Prix International (GPI) and its newly expanded Design and Development Services. Toy manufacturers from across the country gathered on June 11 and 12 for The Toy Association’s 2018 Summer Business Conference, hosted by Amazon in downtown Seattle. The conference featured educational programming for nearly 75 senior-level executives, credit managers, and e-commerce professionals from the association’s manufacturer members. Topics included e-commerce and supply chain logistics, business valuation, and freight inspection issues. Workshops and breakout sessions addressed challenges in today’s credit and collections environment, and a credit risk analysis of key retail accounts. Along with a tour of Amazon’s Fulfillment Center in Kent, Washington, attendees heard presentations from Amazon executives, which included an overview of Amazon Toys and the company’s long-term supply chain goals. “Participants came away from the conference with a better understanding of the scope of Amazon’s fulfillment operations driven by its customer-focused mantra, as well as a variety of other relevant topics,” said Paul Vitale, executive vice president of finance and operations at The Toy Association. “The vibe of the Amazon-hosted conference was full of energy, well-organized, and the presentations were well-maintained on all levels,” said conference attendee Roger Ginsberg, sales manager at Animal Adventure. “The addition of Amazon helped add to the overall networking opportunities!”

more customers there, adjust the lighting so that new elements are highlighted, or simply stock the space with your most-requested items and direct everyone there when they ask. I know a store that paints one wall a new color every quarter and then selects merchandise to display there that matches the color. You think people notice? Of course they do! Take down every sign that has been up for more than a year. No one is reading it anymore. Make new signs to replace the worn and faded ones. Change your window displays regularly. Make them fascinatingly attractive. Staff training Your team gets bored with your meetings just as quickly as your customers get bored with your displays. If you’ve been following the same format for their training and meetings for the last several years, your team is already tuning out. Here are some ways to shake things up.
52 edplay.com • • • • • July/August 2018
INVITE A GUEST SPEAKER We hosted several guests over the years including representatives from our Chamber of Commerce who trained us to be ambassadors for the city. A local art teacher taught us how to draw animal doodles on helium balloons. Several sales reps showed us new toys. PLAY A GAME Hold a contest to see who can find the most items with missing price tags. Have one employee stand at the register and see how many other employees can hide in plain sight without having to bend over – a great way to find the blind spots on your sales floor where shoplifters might go. Build a “body” out of toys by having the staff find different toys that through their play represent the different parts of the body (soccer ball for feet, baby doll for heart, etc.). SERVE FOOD Not just any food. Cater a meeting with food from the new place in town, or serve something unexpected.
I served ice cream at a morning meeting to talk about when and how to “break the rules” when serving customers. I came in early and cooked breakfest, and talked about how leaders lead best by serving (and also about comfort food and the importance of making people feel comfortable). CHANGE THE LOCATION Once a year we would meet off-site. Sometimes it was at my house to play games. Once it was at a movie theater to watch “Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium.” Once it was in a restaurant that had the friendliest wait staff – something we could all learn from. As long as your core values remain the same and are apparent in all you do, your customers will love all the other changes. It makes them want to come back more often because your store is the exciting, hip, new, cool, cutting-edge store that makes them feel good. It makes them want to come back more often because they want to be surprised and delighted. It makes them want to come back just to see what crazy new things you’ll do next. That’s what you want – shoppers coming back, again and again. Phil Wrzesinski is the former owner of Toy House and Baby Too in Jackson, Michigan. Today, he is using the lessons he learned in a lifetime of retail to help other independent retailers and small businesses find success. You can learn more about Phil at PhilsForum.com.
