n September, the National Retail Federation published the results of a survey that it had commissioned to determine the current sentiment among owners of small businesses. The data was collected about six months ago. One of the questions they asked was about changes that the retailers expected to make in their own operations over the next year. Not surprisingly, the most common answer (36 percent) was that they planned to expand their store’s online presence. That should have been their answer 10 years ago, and it probably was. It’s a moving target, as e-commerce evolves from websites to mobile apps to social media to who-knows-what, but that doesn’t mean you should throw your hands up in exasperation. It means that you try harder. I have a friend who owns a clothing store in the downtown district of the small town where I live. You know, the type of place that baby boomers remember their parents taking them to in the 1960s. The type of place that doesn’t exist anymore. Ironically, this one still exists for the same reason that many retailers don’t, and that would be the internet. My friend said recently that his online customer list now exceeds 100,000.
The second-highest response in the NRF survey was that retailers expected to “expand into new product lines or categories.” That’s another topic that we’ve been talking about for what seems like forever, at least going back before the financial crisis of 2008. When a toy-store owner comes to feel that there are no growth opportunities in toys, he or she naturally begins to think about adding books, arts and crafts, gifts, school supplies, whatever. It’s about survival and it makes perfect sense. The same basic principle has operated at my own company. When we realized that we could no longer expect growth in the magazines we published, our solution was to publish more magazines. Without increasing the size of our staff, we have “grown” from three publications to eight. It was the third most popular answer in the National Retail Federation survey that caught my attention. Twenty-one percent of respondents said that they expected to raise employee wages this year. Unfortunately, the survey doesn’t explain the answers, so we don’t know why retailers expect to increase salaries. Is it because they can, because they should, or because they have to? There is a common misconception among non-business owners in this country that employers simply want to pay their employees as little as they possibly can. Whenever I hear a debate on television about raising the minimum wage, I always want to ask the participants, “Do you think we hate our employees?” I know a lot of small-business owners, have been one myself for the past 34 years, and am yet to meet one who begrudged his staff their pay. Most of us would be happy to double everyone’s wages if we could do so without going out of business. If a lot of small retailers are planning to raise wages because they feel confident about sales going forward and want to share the wealth, then that is good news, but somehow I doubt that’s the case. I’m guessing they either have a strategic reason or a legal one. A very large retailer, Target, announced in September that it would raise the minimum wage for its 323,000 employees to $11 per hour, and it would apply that rate to its 100,000 seasonal workers as well. By the end of 2020 (which is not nearly as far away as it sounds) it plans to raise the company minimum to $15 an hour. I have no reason to doubt that Target cares about the welfare of its employees, but let’s assume that it is not motivated solely by altruism. Several other possible rationales have been suggested by the business press. The most obvious would be increased competition to attract more capable people in a low-unemployment environment. With all the store closings we’ve seen this year you would expect there to be a glut of available talent, but the economy has been soaking them up. At 4.2 percent, the September unemployment rate in the United States was the lowest it had been in about 18 years. Walmart raised the minimum for its 1.2 million workers to $10 per hour in 2016, which pushed the company’s average hourly pay to $13.38. Its motivation was generally thought to be public relations, signaling to consumers that it was a good corporate citizen. That could be even more desirable in the case of Target, whose image is still tarnished by the data breach of 2013. Or it could be a matter of running some numbers. Target may have calculated the cost of turnover, in terms of recruiting and training expenses, and determined that it would be cheaper in the long run to pay people enough that they wouldn’t leave. Quite possibly it was a combination of all these factors, but I think there was another reason that would have trumped all the arguments for not raising wages: they were going to have to raise them anyway. As I’m sure you know, the federal minimum wage is $7.25, but 29 states have now raised their own minimum wage
6 edplay.com • • • • • november/december 2017
EPY_Nov/Dec_2017.indd 6
10/27/17 11:57 AM
higher than that. Some, like my own state of New York, have further raises scheduled, and many are now indexed to inflation. In a few places, the minimum wage is already more than double the federal rate. At the risk of sounding like Ebenezer Scrooge, I am opposed to raising the minimum wage. At the risk of winding up like Jacob Marley, I’m opposed even to having a minimum wage to begin with. That topic is a whole editorial unto itself, but it’s one I wrote several years ago and won’t drag you through again. Let it suffice to say that I don’t think minimum wage laws end up helping anyone, other than perhaps third-world factory owners or robot manufacturers. My opinion notwithstanding, it appears that most of the country is trending toward a much higher minimum. In the immortal words of Clint Eastwood, “We all got it coming.” With or without legislation, though, our basic problem remains. We want to pay our employees more, and are hard-pressed to figure out how to do it. The only advice I can give you is the same advice I give to myself. It’s not a perfect solution, because some jobs are difficult to incentivize, but to the extent possible I have always tried to give employees control over their own compensation. I have found that ambitious people tend to make a lot more than minimum wage. Others tend to leave.

The Little Shop Around the Corner With double the space, “there’s more room to wow them” says storeowner Katy McCarthy-Hodock.

T
here are more than 70 specialty toy stores scattered throughout New York State, says ASTRA’s 2017 Membership Directory, but only one is fewer than 20 miles away from edplay’s headquarters. Our company has watched other toy stores in our lovely rural area come and go, independents and chain stores alike, but The Unique Toy Shop in nearby Canandaigua has stood the test of time. What’s more, it has thrived. In 2018, the Hodock family – parents Jamie and Katy plus daughters Laura, Mary, and Libby – will celebrate their store’s 35th year, although they are only responsible for its most recent decade. But what a decade it’s been. On a recent visit there, they filled us in.
edplay: You purchased the store in March of 2008, at the beginning of the recession. What helped you survive?
Jamie: It helped that The Unique Toy Shop was an established business. It had been here since 1983. It already had a loyal clientele. I’m a big believer in the toy industry. When the economy is poor, parents and grandparents will sacrifice so that their kids
can have toys. As parents, we did it, and I think most people do, too. Katy: We didn’t feel the effects of the recession until a few years later, but we were driven to make it succeed so it didn’t matter what we had to do to stay afloat. We just did it. I’m a frugal person anyway. There were no frills at the time that we could cut. There is such a difference between then and now. It’s hard for me to remember what it was like, and it’s sometimes hard for me to get my head around where we are right now. We’ve grown so much in the past year. Tell me about your expansion.
Jamie: The original space, about 1,200 square feet including the break room, had always been too small – we knew that going in. Customers couldn’t walk through the aisles without the fear of tipping over a display. The comfort of our customers was part of it, but the other part was that we didn’t have room to bring merchandise in that we wanted to carry. Katy: We thought about moving to bigger places here on Main Street, but last year, when the antiques store closed next door, the owner of our building came to us. He was all over the idea of knocking the
8 edplay.com • • • • • november/december 2017

wall down between us so we could expand there. It doubled our space. Jamie: He probably had a good feeling that we would be around for awhile. The store is a stable, longtime business. When it’s time, we plan to hand it down to our daughters. In the former space, we couldn’t create the warm, fuzzy, family-toy-store feel we were after. The atmosphere we create is just as important as the merchandise we sell. We want people to like to come here, to have a good experience, and to feel confident that their child or grandchild will enjoy the toy they just purchased. Why does your store work so well in Canandaigua?
Jamie: It’s a traditional downtown with a variety of independent stores. We partner with each other a lot. There is a strong rapport among the merchants. We have a good Downtown Merchants Association – I serve as the current president – plus a good Business Improvement District and Chamber of Commerce. When we all pool our resources, we can make downtown events happen that wouldn’t occur otherwise. We are also right in the heart of New York’s Finger Lakes Region. The city, in fact, is on one of the lakes. The area is an established world entity in the wine industry and our countryside is beautiful. It attracts a lot of people. Tourists come here in the summer for the lake, but in the winter to ski. The area is also a wedding destination. Mary: On top of everything going on outside of the store, The Unique Toy Shop itself brings people into november/december 2017 • • • • • edplay.com 9

town. It has become a destination location; shoppers tell us that they travel here because they’ve heard good things about the store. What do they like about it?
Katy: The wide variety of merchandise. That was another benefit of the expansion: it gave shoppers a better view of the variety of items we carry. I’m torn between being out here on the floor with those shoppers or in the back on the computer hunting down new products. I am obsessed with finding different items to bring in all the time to keep the store interesting. We always go to Toy Fair and to ASTRA’s Marketplace as often as we can, and we also listen to our customers. We don’t seem to have bestsellers per se, although Squishables have been strong consistently, and people are always delighted when they purchase Stomp Rockets.
Shoppers come in and buy just about everything I have. That’s what’s so fun about it. I’ll think maybe I shouldn’t bring in this random thing, but then it ends up working for somebody. There is such a variety of shoppers these days. I’m not a fan of fads; not a fan of jumping in deep with anything no matter what advice I’m getting. We don’t carry many licensed products beyond Sesame Street, but as Jamie reminds me, we have to recognize that opportunities can come from anywhere. Libby: Our customers come back for our service. We spend a lot of time with each and every one of them to pick out the perfect gift, especially grandparents. They need help with what’s “in,” and figuring out what the child they’re buying for may already have. Katy: we offer customers free gift-wrap, we’ll deliver packages
locally if they need us to, and we will ship things for them. How do you think the Toys R Us bankruptcy is impacting the specialty toy industry?
Katy: I don’t think it matters. To make our store special, I had to put aside what my competitors were doing long ago. We are simply going to be the best that we can be. Sure, I don’t like to go to the grocery store and see the Gund plush I sell being sold there, but we can’t control what happens outside our walls. I do believe – and everything I see supports it – that people like to shop in stores, especially toy stores. Parents, grandparents and kids, especially, don’t want to push a button to buy a toy. They want to feel it, touch it and hear about it. We’re in a transitional time, but things are shaking out for bricks-and-mortar, at least in this industry.
The entryway showcases bestsellers plus board, card and “geeky” games; and a wall full of impulse items.

“W
hile great toys are made in every country, you still can’t beat the safety and quality of American Made,” says fatbraintoys.com. The Nebraska-based manufacturer and retailer is proud of the fact that, in addition to offering its customers carefully chosen toys from around the world, it also presents “the single largest selection of American-made toys found anywhere.” (At last count, the number was 406.) It is, in fact, unusual to find that many in one place. Specialty toys are sourced from around the world, which supports our stores’ “you won’t find it anywhere else” boast. Still, 88 percent of the toys sold in America are made in China, according to 2016 statistics from the U.S. Department of Commerce. But why wouldn’t they be? Manufacturers here would be crazy not to take advantage of China’s low-cost labor force. “Call us crazy; lots of people have. But ‘made in America’ is how we like our Flying Turtles to roll,”
says Jules Mason from Tennesseebased Mason Corporation. “Every realtor I know says the most important thing is ‘location, location, location.’ We couldn’t agree more when it comes to manufacturing, and we readily admit to being control freaks when it comes to our Flying Turtles.” Mason Corp is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. “After three decades, we continue our commitment to enjoy and embrace the benefits of day-to-day oversight of our production, product quality, and customer service. It’s the only way we know to achieve what’s most important to us: quality, quality, quality.” Eighty-five percent of U.S. consumers think American-made products are better quality than those made overseas, according to the Boston Consulting Group. That perception helps give American-made products and the retailers who sell them an edge these days. It’s also part of the reason some consumers are willing to pay more for a product that carries the “Made in USA” sticker. The same can be said for safety – nearly half of American shoppers
say they believe Made in America products are safer than the ones made overseas, according to a study from Harris Interactive. Buying from the toy factory around the corner has practical benefits for storeowners, too. “Being here works to our retailers’ advantage,” explains John Gessert, president of American Plastic Toys in Michigan. “We can react more quickly to their orders.” American Plastic Toys has “provided quality play at prices American families can afford” for the past 50 years, John points out. When the company was founded in 1962, it made a commitment to make toys in Michigan, John explains. “We are proud to have been able to continue that commitment for more than 50 years. By keeping the company in the U.S., we can oversee every aspect of production from the tools to the manufacturing process down to the smallest components.” America: the big local In terms of selecting brands to purchase, “consumers are shifting toward values, not value,” said a report from consulting

firm ATKearney. In addition to the practical reasons for buying American-made products, there are other, more social reasons that make it the “buy local” movement on a grander scale. “When we talk about the value of ‘made in the USA’ here at BEKA, we talk about supporting local businesses: keeping money in the area, supporting a wide range of employment opportunities, contributing to local taxes and the regional economy, etc.,” notes Jamie Seeley-Kreisman. His family-owned business has produced high-quality wooden play products in Minnesota for more than 40 years. “When stores purchase our products, in addition to supporting BEKA’s employees and owners, they also help support – the folks who provide us with sustainably harvested hard maple, the family-owned company that makes the boxes our products are packaged in,
• •
• the local hardware business that
provides us with all sorts of screws and bolts, the guys who keep our saw blades sharp, the landscapers who plow our parking lots and clear our sidewalks in the winter, and many more. “When you understand a made-in-the-USA product is ‘local’ (compared to most products offered by multinational companies) you understand the amazing impact of your buying decision,” Jamie concludes. Michael Araten, president and CEO of Pennsylvania-based K’Nex agrees. “I love making toys in America,” he told us. “It provides us all with economic and national security, and creates a virtual cycle of good jobs creating great products for amazing Americans.”

Trust At the recent National Retail Federation’s Shop.org conference, speaker Trevor Hardy pointed to one of the biggest challenges retailers face: “the insane trust vacuum in the world today,” based on the 2017 Trust Barometer from marketing firm Edelman. The yearly measurement reveals that trust in businesses, government, NGOs and the media is in crisis around the world. But Hardy offered a list of ways businesses can restore trust; “hyper-localism” was one of them. “Consumers are looking for relevance and a connection to the brands they support with their dollars; there’s a craving for more localness,” he said. Hardy suggested that using customer data to personalize shopping experiences may help, but a grassroots approach is needed as well. As an example, he mentioned
Pernod Ricard’s Our/Vodka.It’s a global brand, but made at independent distilleries in cities around the world. Here are some of his other tips for earning trust. Use technology to become “radically transparent” Hardy urged retailers to use today’s communication technology to reveal aspects of the products they carry that consumers may not have heard about. Perform your civic duty and educate your customers “Customers feel we have a responsibility to drive social change in the countries and the communities in which we operate,” Hardy said. Businesses are, in fact, stepping in to do good at a time when governments are failing to do so. Consider CVS’s recent 10-day, in-store, fundraising effort for hurricane-ravaged communities in Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico. Consider “Explorium” retail The race to frictionless shopping has taken the joy out of the experience, and it’s time for retailers to reintroduce complexity, Hardy said. Show the journey to purchase; facilitate it rather than dictate it. He pointed to Selfridges department stores in London, Birmingham and Manchester, which became performance venues for a while this summer to let customers enjoy shopping in a different way. The “Music Matters” program was designed to encourage “enjoyment or wonder per square foot,” rather than sales per square foot, noted Hardy. “Balancing the two makes a better business and a more engaging customer experience.”

Owners, Frank and Suzan Bastos started the company in 2012 with a single toy, the namesake Firefox Glider. The Firefox Glider was different than most gliders on the market at the time because it was made of a resilient, flexible foam. The glider line continues to grow and has branched out to include other toys that teach through play. Firefox Toys products can be found in stores in the U.S., Canada, Trinidad and Tobago, Honduras and New Zealand. Play is a critical part of a child’s development and healthy lifestyle. Through our products, we hope to challenge families to become engaged in activities that encourage critical thinking. See ad on page 22

Our toys are designed with a simple, old school wooden style. We believe that kid’s toys should of course, be fun. But we also believe they should be made responsibly and sustainably using only the highest quality materials available, with attention paid to the smallest detail. And we believe they should be made in the United States where quality and safety can be ensured throughout the production life cycle. Everything we use to make our toys - every sourced material, every tool and every supplier we use is American. See ad on page 26 See our product on page 41

The inventory/cash balance
Too
MUCH
or Too Little? by Phil Wrzesinski
M
y grandfather started Toy House, our toy store, back in 1949. When we closed in 2016, I found some of his writings that had been buried in a file. One little gem was a six-page handwritten manifesto titled, “Business is a Matter of Balance” that he wrote back in 1969. I was only 2 at the time, but the words are as true today as the day he wrote them. The biggest issue of “balance” to him was inventory and cash. Finding that sweet spot of just the right amount of inventory is a retailer’s hardest job. If you get too out of line, you either have too much inventory and no cash to pay the bills, or too little inventory, with nothing to sell to make more money. According to his manifesto, that imbalance affects
everything else in the store. Too much inventory and you’re paying for advertisements to sell it. You’re discounting it and losing profits. You need more employees to try to sell it. Too little inventory and you’re paying for staff to sit around with nothing to sell and no money coming in. The long-awaited holiday season is now upon us. The inventory balancing game is about to be played out in stores across America. Here is how it usually happens.
• In early November pundits
predict a huge increase in holiday sales for the season. At the same time you see a run on a particular product line you weren’t expecting to be that hot. You panic; afraid you won’t have enough inventory,
and start ordering more.
• The lead-up to Thanksgiving,
Black Friday and Small Business Saturday are strong. New product trends emerge. You sense a big season coming. You order even more inventory.
• The post-Thanksgiving
slowdown sets in as Cyber Monday hits and online sellers start their heavy discounting; knowing they have to sell it earlier in the month to make sure it ships on time. Your pre-Thanksgiving orders start arriving at the same time your business slows down. You start to panic. You fear you have too much inventory. You start canceling orders and begin wondering when to start marking prices down to move all the excess.
42 edplay.com • • • • • november/december 2017
EPY_Nov/Dec_2017.indd 42
10/27/17 11:58 AM
• The guaranteed-to-ship-in-
time deadline for online sellers approaches and your business starts to pick up again. The final week before Christmas your store is hopping. You wish you hadn’t canceled all those orders two weeks ago. You’re desperately looking for vendors who can ship same day and arrive in the store quickly.
• C hristmas has finally come. You’re in your store the day after only to find that two of those last-second orders have also just arrived. You run the numbers to see if you found the right balance or not before deciding whether to refuse those shipments or keep them.
Sound familiar? I know from playing this game myself for a few decades that, over the subsequent six weeks, there will be multiple times in which you feel you have too little inventory and want to order more. There will also be multiple times where you feel you have too much inventory and need to start discounting. That is the nature of the season. Here are some things to remember.
1
The pundits will always predict robust holiday spending. Even in 2008 with the housing market collapsing there were plenty of predictions for big
holiday spending. Nobody wants to be the bearer of bad news. Your Thanksgiving week will be strong. It might happen on Wednesday. It might happen on Saturday. It might still be all about Friday, but it will be a good week overall. The first two weeks of December will feel incredibly slow (unless you have strong Chanukah sales in your area). This is what ecommerce has done to the holiday selling season. It is the new nature of the retail world. The last seven days will be approximately 10 percent of your annual sales. Go ahead and do the math for the last 10 years. Scary, isn’t it?

How do you keep it in balance? First, don’t panic. You have a blueprint of the ebbs and flows of the holiday season. Expect it and plan for it. Stock and staff your store accordingly. Second, work it backwards. How much inventory do you want on hand for post-Christmas? Are you a strong gift-card seller, a major birthday-gift seller, or in a holiday tourist area? You may want a little more inventory on hand to maximize those sales. How much inventory do you need to get 10 percent of your annual sales in that last week before Christmas? Add those two numbers together and you Wikki_EdPlay_Holidays_Under10_PRS.pdf

have a much better idea of what will be a good balance for your inventory. Third, before you jump on the bandwagon of any early hot sellers, think about how well that item will sell postChristmas. If it fits the theme of your store, the birthday price points, and the needs of January shoppers, then go ahead and overbuy it. If it doesn’t, order with caution and remember that you may have to dump it and take a loss in that last frenzied week. Finally, keep yourself in balance. Take your vitamins. Protect your sleep. Eat well. Find time for yourself, even if 10/12/17
only a few minutes a day. When you are balanced you will make better decisions for the balance of your store. It was true in 1969 when my grandfather wrote his manifesto. It is still true today. Phil is the former owner of Toy House and Baby Too in Jackson, Michigan, one of “The 25 best independent stores in America” says George Whalin in his book Retail Superstars. Now Phil takes the lessons he learned in a lifetime of retail to help other independent merchants and small businesses find their success. Learn more at PhilsForum.com.

for your business information New Fashions for Babies Every Three Months Gap’s baby division has rolled out a subscription box service, reports CNBC. Citing Internet Retailer, the report
says the service is not new; Gap launched it with a limited number of loyal shoppers. “Over time, and quietly, it’s been expanded to a wider audience and is now featured online,” says CNBC. Each outfit box containing six pieces of clothing costs $70, but is worth $100 or more, says Gap. Shoppers have three weeks to decide if they want to keep the items. New boxes will ship every three months. Gap has marketed the service by sporadically promoting it on its social media accounts. At babygapoutfitbox. com, “Hurry, limited quantities
available,” is the message. Subscription boxes from companies like Stitch Fix, Trunk Club and Gap provide their companies with a treasure trove of data on consumer shopping behavior, likes and dislikes. The business model also offers companies a predictable source of revenue – if shoppers don’t cancel their subscriptions. NPD Group estimated that 35 percent of consumers “don’t even know” what subscription services are, says CNBC. Only 15 percent of consumers have ordered subscription boxes; another 14 percent haven’t yet but plan to, the market-research firm found.

New: Forgive and Regroup Since 2014, at least 19 bricks-and-mortar retail chains shut down the bulk of their operations during bankruptcy, reports Reuters. But if a retailer’s brand is strong enough and its operations can be improved, creditors see greater value in forgiving some of their debt in exchange for equity stakes, rather than recouping pennies on the dollar in a liquidation. This new outlook is allowing more U.S. retailers to stay in business with most of their stores and employees intact. It offers grounds for optimism for Toys R Us, which plans to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy with many of its 1,600-or-so stores (that employ 64,000 people), remaining open. The chain will argue that its annual cash flow of roughly $800 million would make it viable if its $5.2 billion in debt is significantly reduced. Until this year, most bankrupt retailers were dismantled during their bankruptcy process. Investors and companies acquired their intellectual property and other assets, but refused to take on their business as a going concern. They saw little value in assuming costly store leases. As a result, bricksand-mortar retail jobs fell by more than 100,000 this year.
But financial experts are seeing a turning point, reports Reuters, where “constituencies have more interest in the retailer surviving than not,” says Holly Etlin, a managing director at AlixPartners LLP, a consulting firm that worked on the bankruptcy of Gymboree. “Last month, teen clothing shop rue21 Inc. and children’s apparel chain Gymboree Corp. came out of bankruptcy in similar fashion, preserving much of their store footprints and employee headcount,” reports Reuters. Many bankrupt chain stores are owned by private equity firms and saddled with debt. If their debt mountains are slashed and their payment obligations eased, argue the stores in bankruptcy court, they can generate enough cash. Since liquidations would result in a limited recovery of what creditors, landlords and vendors are owed, they have become more receptive to this idea, based on their own financial projections. It makes sense for creditors to extend new money, often at high interest rates, in exchange for a fully restructured balance sheet and a better business plan, say some financial experts.

for your business information Citing Experts, The Washington Post Notes a Specialty Toy Store Revival In September, The Washington Post featured a profile of Barstons Child’s Play as part of a discussion about the Toys R Us bankruptcy. At thirty-plus years old, Child’s Play – with four store locations in Washington, D.C.,
Maryland and Delaware – is owned by founder Steven Aarons. A former board chair of ASTRA, Steven was honored last year with the association’s Lifetime Achievement Award. The Post compares Steven’s independent toy stores to the toy chain-store giant to highlight reasons for the bankruptcy. The article listed poor in-store service, a lackluster shopping experience, and a mountain of debt left over from a 2005 leveraged buyout. “If Toys R Us is a privateequity horror story (not one for the kids), then mom-and-pop
neighborhood toy shops are more like a fairytale,” says the article, which also states that independent toy stores throughout the country are seeing a revival. “At Child’s Play in Northwest Washington, annual sales have been climbing about 3 percent a year, as parents eschew megastores and online options in favor of the company’s four locations, which together bring in millions in annual revenue.” Children want to play, said the article, and prefer to take their allowance and birthday money – actual cash in hand – to a store

that lets them do so. Their parents appreciate the carefully curated selection of products that are chosen with help from developmental psychologists, occupational therapists and teachers. The staff is trained extensively in child development and each employee is taught to recommend items based on specific considerations. “Every employee in the store can give you a five-minute shtick on each product that’s on the shelves. And we all have at least one specialty,” Shannon Sumner, a staffer, told The Post. (She’s an expert in Nerf weaponry and outdoor toys.) There are multiple play
areas, free gift-wrapping, and lots of open-box experiences. One shopper described a visit in which employees gathered an assortment of footballs and threw them around with her 7-year-old so he could choose the one he liked best. The store boasts a LEGO section, a fake food section, designated areas for costumes, water guns and puzzles, and lots more. “Toys R Us, which had basically devolved into a warehouse, did not have the vision or the money to give its customers a great experience,” retail consultant Howard Davidowitz told The Post. In an interview with the same newspaper a few years ago,
Steve Aarons was asked, “What makes for a great toy store?” “A toy store that thinks about the development of the child but also can mix in the fact that there are things that are purely play,” he responded. “We’ll have a small shelf of Barbie dolls, but we’re not going to put it out there predominately. I try to think of play time as the same as nutrition. Toys can be really important developmentally, and when you work on a diet for your child you’re trying to make sure they’re eating healthy things. There’s a little bit of dessert mixed in, but you’re not going to give them just dessert.”

industry news Spielwarenmesse, the annual toy tradeshow in Nurnberg, Germany, is scheduled for Wednesday, January 31 through Sunday, February 4. After the successful debut last year of the Special Area for Baby & Infant Articles, the area has expanded this year into Hall 2 and part of Hall 3. It will feature more than 400 exhibiting companies showcasing baby toys, baby textiles, travel systems, Care & Food, and Home & Safety. Among the mix of companies from around the world are Skip Hop from the U.S., and Spielwarenmesse founding member Steiff – both returning after a hiatus. Baby & Infant Articles are increasingly edging onto the radar of many retailers. Two halls and a Special Area, featuring well-known exhibitors, will serve as the central hub for this product segment. Spielwarenmesse creates a comprehensive communication and ordering platform for more than 2,850 national and international manufacturers. Approximately 73,000 buyers and toy traders from more than 120 nations are expected to attend the 2018 event.
ToyFest West, hosted by the Western Toy and Hobby Representatives Association (WTHRA) will be held Sunday, March 11, through Tuesday, March 13 at the South Point Hotel in Las Vegas. “With this year’s show dates three weeks after Toy Fair in New York, and with EdExpo closing its doors, ToyFest West is envisioning an attendance increase in 2018,” noted WTHRA President Bill St. John. Plans for ToyFest West 2018 kicked off at a combined meeting of the WTHRA board and slate of officers held on May 17. They unanimously decided to keep ToyFest West a three-day event, and continue with the “buy two nights, get one free” hotel promotion for the first 300 rooms booked. Changes include revamping the website, creating additional social media sites, and enhancing the gala. For more information, visit toyfestwest.com, or email toyshow@wthra.com.

Wham-O, the original creator of the Hula Hoop, Frisbee and Hacky Sack, is launching a new line of indoor party games called Stay ’N Play. The mix of 20 fun, challenging and timed party and inflatable games will be available in October 2018. Each game takes between one and five minutes to complete. One calls for seeing who can use his body to shake the most ping pong balls out of a plastic container attached to his waist. In another, teams compete to throw the most balls in plastic cups fastened to their teammates’ arms and legs.
Outdoor play products manufacturer Tucker Toys has entered an exclusive distribution deal with Swimways, a wholly owned subsidiary of Spin Master. More than 22 million Phlat Balls have been sold since they were introduced in 2000. Tucker Toys, based in Hamilton, New Jersey, was recently named a finalist for the Corporate Growth (ACG) Award that recognizes New Jersey’s most successful middle-market companies. Swimways believes in making sure kids stay safe in and around water, and that learning to swim is an important life skill. In 2012, they established National Learn to Swim Day, the third Saturday of May each year, dedicated to educating parents and children about water safety and the importance and benefits of learning to swim.

The U.S. toy industry grew its dollar sales by 3 percent in the first half of 2017, says The NPD Group. With about one-third of total annual sales typically occurring in the first half, NPD estimates that the industry will grow approximately 4.5 percent for the full year. “The industry will need growth of around 5 percent in the second half of the year to reach NPD’s estimate, and I expect the box office to lead it there,” says Juli Lennett, senior vice president and U.S. toys industry

analyst, The NPD Group. Illustrating the box office effect, declines in building sets and action figures can be linked to last year’s movie tie-ins, including “Star Wars,” “Batman v Superman,” and “Ninja Turtles,” among others. The vehicles supercategory kicked into higher gear with the June release of “Cars The Movie.” The two strongest growth categories, radio/ remote control and mini vehicles, are both getting a lift from the new movie. Six of the 11 super categories posted gains, led by games & puzzles, plush, and all other toys, which includes fidget toys. Games & puzzles grew the fastest at 24 percent, had the largest absolute dollar growth at $143 million, and represented more than 40 percent of total toy industry gains. Categories posting losses include arts & crafts, youth electronics, action figures & accessories and building toys. Within games, adult games grew the fastest at 267 percent. Strategic trading card games made up about half the dollar growth, led by Pokémon, up 60 percent compared to last year. It was both the number-one property and growth property for the total toy industry. Plush sales grew by 13 percent, driven undoubtedly by Hatchimals, says The NPD Group. Thanks to fidget toys, sales of all other toys grew by 9 percent. The $819 million collectibles market continued on its growth trajectory, with dollar sales up 21 percent mid-year. Sales of blind packs, a subset of collectibles, grew by 48 percent year-to-date. (Data is representative of retailers that participate in The NPD Group’s Retail Tracking Service. NPD’s current estimate is that the Retail Tracking Service represents approximately 80 percent of the U.S. retail market for toys.)
Dollar, CVS Health, Sam’s Club and Michaels stores. “Attendees tell us that it continues to be a critical stop on the long-lead buying circuit,” reports Steve Pasierb, the association’s president and CEO. “Unique trends for next year’s fourth quarter were spotted throughout the marketplace, and there were plenty of orders placed for the current season as well.” Next up for the Toy Association is Play Fair, scheduled for November 4 and 5 at the Javits Center in Manhattan. The consumer fair celebrates play and entertainment for all ages with exclusive products, plus hands-on exhibits and displays from dozens of toy and entertainment brands. The first Play Fair was held February 13 and 14, 2016, and hosted 20,000 attendees. This year’s edition will more than double in size, and offer new activities and bigger features.
