REDESIGN \ ˌ RĒ-DI- ˈ ZĪN \

redesign (plural redesigns) A plan for making changes to the structure and functions of an artefact, building or system so as to better serve the purpose of the original design, or to serve purposes different from those set forth in the original design

I N S P I R A T I O N From the beginning, I wanted to work with bar stools, but Angus told us we are not allowed to make them and can only do it for the redesign, so that became my redesign theme. For me main features of a bar stool are: it is high (as in long legs) has low back or no back at all has a crossbeam between front legs Here are some bar stools I really like and use as a reference point. What I am leaving from a classic Windsor chair's features is the fact that all parts are attached to the seat, the spread legs, spindles and a seat with ф пкщщмую

M O D E L I N G At first, I was just remodelling the chair that Daniel gave us as a homework task  - making the legs thinner, simpler and longer; the seat narrower and more rectangle-ish, lower back.

After that, I had a chair. Just an ordinary bar stool: high and narrow, resembling a Windsor chair slightly.

G R A S S H O P P E R Firstly, I made a chair (and 3 variations of it) manually using bend tool. But then my hard drive with all of the renders broke down and I didn't have enough time to do all of this manually, so Steph taught me how to use grasshopper to do this faster and in greater quality. At first, it was a lot to take in for my tired and sleep-deprived brain, but after replicating the scheme he showed me 3 times, I managed to figure out which command does what and how the function when combined. This saved me a huge amount of time and work which I am very thankful for.

This is a number slider command. which allows you to change the number inside the assigned range.

This set of commands creates a line (Ln) between two assigned points (pt)

The divide command divides the assigned line by the number assigned in the slider.Â

G R A S S H O P P E R

The cluster, in this case, combines all of the data and transfers it to the x unit command.

These two sliders are assigning values to seed and B point for the points. And the x unit command dictates them to move only in the x plane.

W I N D S O R

R E D E S I G N

Here I just add same sliders for the movement inside the Y plane (y unit) to the existing line.

G R A S S H O P P E R

The move command combines all of the data provided and directs it into the action moving inside assigned planes.

W I N D S O R

R E D E S I G N

The nurbs command in with curve command (crv) builds a curve through assigned points. It works basically like a curve with points on in Rhino.Â

G R A S S H O P P E R

The pipe command builds a pipe (a circle extruded along the curve) of assigned radius (given by two sliders) out of assigned line. It is not solid, but a surface, so it needs to be capped after.

Here are some 'legs' (pipes) I've generated using this method

After all the modelling and grasshopper coding, rendering was the most enjoyable and easy part of this task. I applied different metal to each stool and rendered each of them from 3 assigned cameras so it would be easier to see the difference between.

I've decided to create a collection of 7 bar stools (7 as in the movie Seven Psychopaths (2012) because I love and it is based on several different types of people doing something together) each representing a stereotypical drunk person. Here's what I got:

The to be sure to be sure stool

The drunk walking stool

The who am I? drunk stool

the drunk dancing stool

The third wheel stool

The drunk flirting stool

The classic drunk stool

The classic drunk stool

Title: Best suits for:

'The classic drunk stool' pub or bar

This classic slightly bent bar stool is perfect for small pubs and bars with dimmed light, warm colour palette and cosy atmosphere. It will add a charming touch to your bar and attract client's sight with its elegant legs and comfy grooved seat.

"Hey, fella! As usual?"

The drunk walking stool

Title: Best suits for:

'The drunk walking stool" pub, bar or a burger shop

Meet the drunk waking stool! The moment you see it, it will remind you of your friend walking out of that pub at 3 am and walking down the road. In the wrong direction. And not quite straight. He says he will walk home but usually doesn't reach his destination and end up either at a friend's house or sleeping in front of his door.

"It's okay! I can walk  on my own!"

The third wheel stool

R E N D E R S

Title: Best suits for:

'The third wheel stool' small bars or cafes

This is the annoying one of the group. Never starts a conversation but always tries to join or even interrupt the others. Only does it after having one too many drinks. At other times is bearable. This chair will fit nicely in small bars or cafes thanks to its compactness and customizable colour palette.

"Heeey, guuys! Whatcha talking 'bout?"

The drunk flirting stool

R E N D E R S

Title: Best suits for:

'The drunk flirting stool' clubs, hookah, smoothie cafe

This one is a perfect illustration of people whi\o never start a conversation or make a move first while sober, but go all macho and lavelas after a few shots. Know a little about everything and thus can support any discussion. This chair's elegant design would fit both a lively bar and a relaxed hookah bar.

"Come here often?"

The who am I drunk? stool

R E N D E R S

Title: Best suits for:

'The drunk flirting stool' clubs, hookah, concert hall

I don't remember anything connected to this one. No one who drank with a person like this usually has any memory of the previous night. Including themselves. But it looks kinda funny. Reminds me of an octopus :P

"Where am I? And who are you?!"

The drunk dancing stool

R E N D E R S

Title: Best suits for:

'The drunk flirting stool' bar or a club

You know they cant dance. They know themselves they cant dance. Everybody knows it. Point being - they cannot dance. But they still do. And they are so sure that they are doing awesome that you just can't let yourself to rain on their parade. So you let them enjoy themselves, at least for today.

"Hey! Make a music louder! I'll show you how it's done!"

W I N D S O R

R E D E S I G N

The to be sure to be sure stool

R E N D E R S

Title: Best suits for:

'The drunk flirting stool' bar, pub, just anywhere with alcohol

This is the responsible drinker. The 'mom' of the group. The one who always make sure everybody has enough money for a taxi back home, make calls for those incapable of it, takes the responsibility of splitting the group bill and holds their friend's hair in the toilet afterwards. This bar stool is practically a sign for the bartenders that shows who to go up to when the bar is about to close or some shit is going down.

"C'mon you've had enough for today, go home."

PROBLEM SOLVING After coming up with the concept of the chair and modelling it, I was faced with some problem and had to find solutions for them. Here they are:

P R O B L E M

Slippery metal surface Since the whole chair is made out of polished metal it can be quite slippery and hard to seat on. Especially for people who are not quite sober as it usually happens in bars and pubs. So to avoid people on the floor and traumas I made a groove in the chair that keeps one's bottom at one place and doesn't let them fall off the chair.

S O L V I N G

W I N D S O R

R E D E S I G N

Stability of the legs It is a very important point since people in bars are mostly not quite stable, and even if they are, unstable chairs are dangerous and uncomfortable. So, that's why mine is made out of metal and welded. It also has a crossbeam between the front legs for once feet to feel more comfortable and also to provide additional sturdiness to the hair itself.

P R O B L E M

S O L V I N G

W I N D S O R

R E D E S I G N

Metal legs scratching the floor Since pubs, bars and so on usually have wooden floors, it would not be nice to scratch them with metal legs while moving the h\chairs around. So what I suggest to do is to put nylon or resin caps on the legs to avoid an awful sound and the damage to markets. They can be detachable so you could change them after the previous one has worn off.
