“PROMOTING CONTEMPORARY AND TRADITIONAL ARTS IN ALASKA’S INTERIOR”
You are invited to the Bear Gallery on February 10th, 2011 at 7 pm to attend Charlie Steps Out: An Evening of Fine Art. This ticketed fundraiser will provide guests with the opportunity to purchase fine art though a unique game of chance while enjoying performances by Jean McDermott, Julie Engfer and more.
Tickets for this enjoyable evening fundraiser are $30 and include hors d’oeuvres, refreshments, entertainment and 3 chances to purchase art. Additional chances may be purchased for $2 each or 3 for $5.
Over the years FAA has had many pieces of valuable art donated with the intent of helping our organization raise money. At Charlie Steps Out the Fairbanks Arts Association will hold a distinctive art sale of pieces of visual art which will be available for purchase at their appraised value. If you choose to purchase a piece, simply put your ticket in the box next to the work and at the end of the evening, one ticket will be drawn from each box. The owner of that ticket then has the privilege of purchasing the item. It’s as simple as that! We will have some exceptional art available including work by David Mollett, Janel Thompson, Terence Choy, and Lyric Osburn. Charlie Steps Out: An Evening of Fine Art will be held February 10th from 7:00 to 9:00pm in the Bear Gallery of the Alaska Centennial Center for the Arts in Pioneer To purchase tickets, please call 456-6485 Park. ext. 226 or email Melissa@fairbanksarts.org.

Watercolor
I am a home grown Fairbanks kid. I did all my schooling here, graduating high school in 1959. In the 40’s my father started Larson’s Jewelers & Locksmith. I worked for him, running the business for 12 years, until it was sold in 1989. Then I worked for the News-Miner until retiring in 2006. My first few watercolor lessons were in 1990. Then, after not painting for ten years, I began again in 2001. I have studied with many nationally known watercolor workshop instructors and locally with Neville Jacobs, Gael Murakami, Vladimir Zhikhartsev, and my husband, Tom Nixon. I truly enjoy painting on location or ‘en plein air’ in and around Fairbanks and elsewhere in Alaska in the summertime. I consider the scenery in Alaska to be so breathtakingly beautiful, it is a constant challenge to ‘capture’ it on paper; which you never can! But I also enjoy painting pictures of some of the old buildings and landmarks around Fairbanks in my own watercolor style. Mostly, I just love to paint!

Patterns of Influence is the Bear Gallery’s only themed show and one that artists and art enthusiasts look forward to all year. This year we welcome William “Bill” Barstow as a guest juror from Talkeetna. William Barstow was born in Vermont and came to Alaska with his family in 1976 when he was 10 years old. A sometimes carpenter and commercial fisherman who currently makes his home in Talkeetna, Barstow is a former Junior Olympic skier, mountain climber, and river guide. In 1988 he received a B.A. in Spanish from Middlebury College and in 1995 he completed an M.F.A. in painting from Savannah College of Art and Design. He taught art for several years at Mat-Su College. Inspired early on by his artistic grandmother, Barstow paints in a variety of media on an equally varied choice of surfaces and focuses largely on landscape. In 2003 he created an 16’ x 8’ multimedia relief for the Sunshine Community Health Center in Talkeetna based on a Top: Orion and Canis, salmon spawning stream and its Bottom: variety of piscine inhabitants. His Summer Lake work can be seen at Artique Ltd. Both 5’x7’ in Anchorage and the Well Street Oil on Canvas Bill Barstow Art Company in Fairbanks.

Gift Shop Artist of the Month
Melinda Mattson A graduate of UAF, majoring in Theatre and Art, Melinda Mattson has been making objects of interest in Fairbanks since 1970. Her latest work includes things made from her collection of buttons and men’s ties. The ties once belonged to Jim Bell, Fairbanks musical composer/entertainer and exceptionally well- dressed man. The buttons- some may have been snipped from a cherished garment in 1910, others purchased from a discount house in 1970. Each tells a story. Melinda has recently moved into a studio near Ester where she paints signs and makes costumes. She has been General Manger and Artistic Director at the Palace Theatre in Pioneer Park since 1986.

In a Nick After the children had been put to bed for the evening and the men had come in, the radio was turned on and the whole group listened to the news reports. Jen had followed them in and listened for a little while. It didn’t sound like help would be coming quickly. Jen wished everyone a good evening and went outside, ostensibly to bed, down in the lean-to he had constructed. The men looked at each other and shrugged.
“Strange guy.” Marty said. “But a good worker.” “Probably won’t be here in the morning,” Phil muttered. The rest of them agreed and went back to listening to the news reports. After about an hour and a half they turned off the radio and all bedded down. Outside, Jen sat down against the diner wall and waited for everything to become quiet inside. Once he was sure that everyone had dropped off to sleep he got up and after rummaging through the inside pockets of his jacket
Fairbanks Arts Association is pleased to help foster and support artists of all genres. For the next year we will feature the science fiction series In a Nick by Cheryl Joens. To learn more about FAA’s programs, please contact Melissa@fairbanksarts.org. he pulled out a small device about the size of a cell phone and several other objects that turned out to be small lantern like devices that he positioned at strategic places. Then he began pacing back and forth systematically across the yard, all the while studying the cell phone-like device. Eventually, he worked his way around the back of the building. Finally, he marked an area out with stakes. Going through his pockets he brought out another device and pointed it at the ground.
THANK YOU!
Dan is a talented professional artist who has been living and producing fine art and prints in the Fairbanks area for the past 24 years. Dan’s passion is painting wildlife, especially birds in their natural settings in water base and oil paint. Dan has taught classes in painting and has an extensive background in fine art. He has worked professionally in product and graphic design, recreational arts and crafts, and teaching. Dan has volunteered in many arts and outdoor programs and has participated in “Artists in the Schools” Programs and projects at Creamer’s Field. Dan has donated art to many charities to help raise money for good causes. His interests include hunting, fishing, hiking, photography, cross country skiing, canoeing, and spending time with hunting and other dogs training them and taking them on walks alone or with friends. Dan will take on commissions and his goals are to someday produce a high quality book on art and nature, and possibly produce conservation stamps.
