2023 Capture Fairfield Visual Arts & Photography Competition photo book

Fairfield City Council’s Capture Fairfield Visual Arts & Photography

Competition is an annual competition open to all amateur and emerging creatives residing in Fairfield City. This year saw 389 submissions entered across the visual arts, photography and Waste to Art categories.

We extended the Waste to Art category to include ‘repurposed suburb banners’, offering a chance for adults to make something creative or practical from worn suburb banners that would otherwise have gone into landfill. The category was also offered to primary schools once again as a collective class project for years 3 to 6.

The competition’s ‘Love Where You Live’ theme attracted entries in the primary, secondary and adult sections which showcased the landscapes, experiences and attractions unique to Fairfield City.

These pages feature just some of this year’s fantastic entries which are also on display at Council’s Administration Centre and Whitlam Library, Cabramatta for a short time.

Thank you to everyone who entered the competition and congratulations to our winners. We have enjoyed exploring Fairfield City through your eyes and look forward to next year’s submissions.

Message from the Mayor

The 2023 Capture Fairfield Visual Arts & Photography Competition presented participants with the opportunity to visually interpret the ‘Love Where You Live’ theme to capture the essence of the City.

This year’s competition submissions were our best yet! The calibre of works was impressive and I would like to thank everyone who took the time to enter. As I look through each submission, I feel great pride for our City and the creativity expressed by our residents.

I hope you find the time to visit the exhibitions at Council’s Administration Centre and Whitlam Library, Cabramatta and get inspired to enter next year.

4

‘A Park of Adventure’

My painting represents what I love about Western Sydney Parklands, in particular The Dairy. Immediately as I drive through the gates, I am greeted with a landmark sculpture. I enjoy a walk up the winding paths through the Australian bush, while listening to the sounds of birds and perhaps catching sight of a kangaroo or two. This is a place close to my heart, where friends and family gather and kids play.

I am a local visual artist, who enjoys expressing the unique character of Australian wildlife by adding a bit of humour and novelty in my artwork to tell a story. I work mainly with acrylic paint, but I also love experimenting with different mediums to challenge myself.

I often gain inspiration for my artworks from visits to wildlife parks, and bush walks through national parks.

There is beauty in mundanity. Tucked away down Dutton Lane in Cabramatta, so many of us have done our morning groceries and witnessed the weekend crowds. It just so happened that on one of these mornings, I snapped some photos and took some time to memorise the scene, so I could later capture the moment in a mixed-media illustration. In ‘Dutton Lane, Cabramatta’, I tried to avoid illustrating what I saw, and focused instead on what I felt; the hustle, bustle, energy of the people who make up Fairfield City.

I am a first-year animation student at UTS, an aspiring artist who hopes to work in pre-production animation! Having lived in Fairfield City my entire life thus far, I can credit the vibrant energy and diverse cultures of the people around me as an inspiration to my artmaking.

‘The Fairfield International Monument’ 3rd

Liudmila Pozdnyak , Adult category

The Fairfield International Monument built as a symbol of Fairfield’s migrant population. It was created by the Fairfield Multicultural Society, originally 16 people from diverse cultural backgrounds who came together to honour the many nationalities setting in the area. The “A” symbolises Australia also Mount Ararat. The angular object above symbolises a boat or a plane, while the hole in the middle symbolises the opening where migrants exit to colonise new land. I decided to paint that spectacular monument so it is a vital part of our heritage and iconic Fairfield landmark , also I personally like it a lot, especially after upgrading.

I am working in an agency Just Better Care Macarthur as community worker. I am 56 years old and a mother of two grown children. I attend art classes in Bonnyrigg library every Thursday so my passion is art. I do like to paint different subjects, stories and also I enjoy to participate in our art group with my soulmates.

Highly Commended

This artwork was inspired by nature and the people we have in this community. There are 26 individual sculptures inside the main sculpture. They were made in teacups to represent connecting with neighbours and friends. All the details represent how diverse our community is but how we all live together. I love where I live because I have the freedom and resources to be creative and connect to community and the environment.

I love being creative every day. I facilitate adult and children art classes at two galleries. I mainly focus on creating ceramic art but also paint and do mixed media.

‘Boundless Joy, Exploring the

Playground’s Palette’

‘Boundless Joy’ is a close up of the different playground spaces around Fairfield. It enables the viewer to remember their time of childhood and memories of being free and just having fun. These places are ways to bring the community together to thrive with happiness, dream of adventure and explore the wonders of play.

I am a Year 7 student at Bossley Park High School. My interests are art, especially digital art and listening to music. I entered this competition because I love the Fairfield area I live in and the diverse people I see everyday as I travel to school.

‘Cabravale Memorial Park’

The main focus of the artwork is the Vietnam War Memorial and the Cabravale Memorial Bandstand. The soldiers’ positions are closer to the viewer as to create a sense of them overlooking the areasort of in a way of camaraderie together or in a protective manner of the things in the surroundings. I specifically decided to choose these memorials as they have great significance to my background as a Vietnamese-Cambodian artist, however, I chose not to place any flags on the flag poles as to symbolise our diversity as a community.

I am a fourteen year old artist and have loved art for as long as I can remember. I enjoy art as a hobby, and I mostly practice line illustrations and acrylic paintings. My paintings are mostly of still life or animals, so painting scenery was a little new to me. I like looking at art in general.

‘Sunday Mornings’

Year 11

Shopping for groceries. It’s something we all do at least once a week and at the heart of Fairfield City a place of diversity, and togetherness, grocery shopping runs are something rooted in every family memory. I remember growing up in the area, my family and I would walk around Fairfield Showground, John Street at Cabramatta or spend hours at Cabravale Memorial Park. One thing that still remains the same are our Sunday grocery shopping runs. My painting portrays the front stand of a local grocery store in Fairfield, a familiar sight to many.

I’m a year 11 student living in Cabramatta. Growing up in Fairfield City, my fondest memories are going out with my family every weekend or after school whether it be going to the park, shopping around Cabramatta or roaming around Bonnyrigg Gardens.

Nowadays, Sundays are the one day I get to enjoy the little things - grocery shopping, going out to eat for breakfast and going to the park. Some of my hobbies are painting, netball and cooking, so for my entry I decided to incorporate my love for painting and an aspect of my suburb.

‘My Park: Ironside Park’

St Johns Park Public School Year 2

Ironside Park makes me feel happy and excited to try new things. In the morning, the park is peaceful with birds chirping around. Sometimes you can see many different types of birds like parrots, cockatoos, and magpies. The magpies sometimes crow really loud. The trees at Ironside Park are big and tall, and some don’t have leaves.

I am a happy, caring, and friendly person. I like to try new parks because they are fun, and exciting. I like attending school so that I can learn, and play with my friends. My favourite author is Mo Willems, because he writes funny books that make me laugh.

‘My Fair Lady’

This sculpture is representative of the Bangladesh garment workers who are unfairly treated through low pay and poor working conditions. My intention with this sculpture is to bring awareness of the impact that fast fashion has on these workers and how it contributes to textile waste. My hope is that people will be more conscientious of where their clothes come from and consider more sustainable options. This sculpture is made 100% from recycled materials. All fabric was taken from suburb banners.

I enjoy spending time with my rainbow lorikeet and going for walks and bike rides in my local area. I am not an artist by no means. However, when presented the idea of upcycling the suburb banners, I immediately thought about fabric (specifically clothing) and fast fashion and knew I wanted to create something inspired by that.

We have created a chair from used chair legs and old iPad covers, covered with reusable coloured string. A companion table has been created from old chair legs and iPad covers as well. The table top has been covered with bread bag tags collected for recycling but used for decorating the table to make it colourful. We love where we live so we want to keep the area beautiful by reusing as much as we can to avoid things going unnecessarily to landfill.

At school we are learning about how to become more sustainable with recycling, reusing and renewing old things as much as possible.

Kangaroos are so beautiful. When I walk my dogs at The Dairy in Abbotsbury, they often appear. They are always in groups, eating, resting and looking around. It always brings a smile to my face when I see them, even from a distance.

I am an artist who loves to make artworks about my immediate environment. I have been painting and drawing animals, landscapes and still life for years. It is my absolute passion. I love to share my work through exhibitions, and meeting other artists.

35
Melvy Connell, Adult category ‘Kangaroo in Abbotsbury’

Standing tall as a celebration of freedom and harmony, the Pai Lau gate in Cabramatta serves as an inspiration to all immigrant groups around the world, demonstrating the potential of diversity and inclusiveness. It also provides visibility for these communities, highlighting their presence and contributions.

Having grown up in Australia in a migrant family, I have learnt the true impact of multiculturalism and its success in Sydney. The grand structure has brought me feelings of security and belonging ever since I was a young child.

A resident of Fairfield City all my life, I enjoy painting as a hobby and hope to share my work with my community.

‘Space and freedom to explore nature’

My painting shows how our children can still explore the untouched open space we have in our backyard but still live in suburbia. At Calmsley Hill City Farm our children can experience how things were and to play freely in the natural environment. This painting reflects the beauty of nature that exists and for all to enjoy at the farm. I am a senior who has lived in the Fairfield area all my life. I have made many memories and have seen many changes over time. Painting is something that I have taken up after retiring. It is something that I have always wanted to do but never had the time. Since joining the Senior’s Art Group at Bonnyrigg Library, I have enjoyed learning a new skill and making new friends. I look forward to the class each Monday where we paint and catch up at the same time.

‘The Heart of Nature’

I was inspired mainly by Fairfield Park and the green spots surrounding the area near the railway. I was privileged to find inspiration in this autumn season and to witness the suburb’s beauty all around me. This is my call to society to appreciate, protect and preserve the local nature and species we are blessed to own.

My name is Vanessa and I love and enjoy any form of artistic expression there is. My hobbies are painting, writing, drawing and taking a stroll to the park to observe nature.

38

‘The Old Soul Oak Tree’

A few blocks from my childhood home was what we called “The Old Oak Tree”. This was my quiet place as a teenager. I would ride my bicycle there to reflect and just sit on her strong and shady limbs. I visited the tree some months ago to photograph her and was instantly hit with a wave of nostalgia. I was suddenly that same young girl again, riding her bike through our wonderful City. With my painting I've captured why Fairfield is where I love where I live.

I was born in Amman Jordan of Armenian heritage, my family migrated to Australia in 1967. In 1971, my parents purchased their first home in Barkley Street, Fairfield. This home was a very happy place where we spent most of our time playing and riding our bicycles. I married in 1980 and purchased our first home in Prairiewood. Later my three sons were born in the original Fairfield Hospital. I am semi-retired and enjoy working out at the gym and attending the beginner’s art class at the Bonnyrigg Library.

39

‘Nene and the Pumpkin Flowers’

Our Nene came to Australia with her husband and three children about fifty years ago. She is an excellent cook. Her recipes are traditional dishes from Cyprus. There are many friends and family living in Australia that come from the same areas in Cyprus as our Nene. One of these friends also lives in Fairfield, grows flowers and many vegetables. These yellow pumpkin flowers are from his garden. They will be filled with a mixture of rice and seasonings and cooked to become ‘flower dolmas’.

As a long time resident of Fairfield I enjoy the local parks and gardens and also the busy shopping precincts. As an artist I am often inspired by local scenes. I have been painting fairly seriously for nearly twenty years now. Even as a child I was always drawing and colouring in. I have been fortunate to study with good artists and I attend demonstrations and workshops as often as I can.

‘The Pho Eaters’

Fairfield City is renowned for its multiculturalism, with the majority of local residents immigrating from overseas. The diverse cultural characteristics of the local food industry have also captured the attention of numerous diners. The Mid-Autumn Festival event attracts thousands of tourists every year. Among the many local delicacies, Pho (Vietnamese soup rice noodles) is undoubtedly one of the most popular foods. There are countless Pho restaurants in Cabramatta and Canley Vale. My family and I are Pho lovers and often visit these restaurants. I have been living in Fairfield City for over twenty years. I enjoy depicting scenes from my mind on canvas. The artwork ‘The Pho Eaters’ is created based on my impressions of the surroundings while I eat Pho during my usual visits.

I am an immigrant from China. From the mid-1990s until now, I have been living in the Fairfield City LGA. I have always loved fine art since childhood. I obtained a commercial art design qualification in China in the 1980s and worked as a graphic designer until the end of 1989 when I moved to Australia. Since 2018, due to my illness, I have had more time to do what I like and started creating my unique style of painting. I display and sell my artwork through online galleries since then. My studio is in my home.

On a very hot day at Plough and Harrow, my daughter and I walked past a big goanna. He was sun baking on a tree. He was beautiful, he was so well camouflaged amongst the shrubs and trees, I had to paint it.

‘Love Where You Live’

In contemplating “Love where you Live”, I looked at what has made me feel that sense of belonging. After decades of living in the area, it’s a real sense of community and acceptance that has kept me grounded here. ‘Akin’ is a tessellated paper collage showing that no tile is the same but all are connected through one cotton thread. Each mosaic represents the diversity of the Fairfield municipality; yet the interwoven cotton thread represents a sense of connection and belonging to the same community.

I’ve lived in the Fairfield municipality since 1987. I’m a married mother of two who completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of NSW. I’m of Italian heritage and my parents were Italian migrants who had resided here since the early 60’s.

Personally, I feel a great peace on my mind when I witness and admire the amazing scene that nature gives us. I feel that all these intense colours capture the sense of beauty and serenity in an everyday event that, sometimes, we don't acknowledge at all.

I’m a nature lover. I’ve always enjoyed all kinds of art since I was a kid. I enjoy making jewellery, clay works, paintings, drawings or even dabble on textiles. I believe art is a way to express our feeling and change the world around us.

44

‘Intersection’

This drawing is of an intersection at The Horsley Drive and the M7. I cross here often when my family and I travel south to Canberra, east to Sydney City, west to the Blue Mountains or north to Newcastle or even QLD. I see it as a gateway to my family’s holiday destinations so close to our home. That’s why I think this location represents what I love about Fairfield City, especially the Parks area which is where I live.

I’m a student in year 10 and I like drawing different artforms, such as cartoons, realistic, and landscapes and use mainly pencil and paint pens on paper as my media. Drawing is what I do in the evenings to wind down and it helps me relax after school and homework.

‘Another Beautiful Day at Allambie Park’ Bossley Park High School Year 8

Early in the mornings, the sun, clouds and trees at Allambie Park all collaborate to create an extraordinarily breathtaking scene at sunrise. All of the awe-inspiring warm hues of the sky help start off my weekday mornings with a boost of determination. Occasionally, I would also spot Australian Swiftlets freely zipping from one side of the field to the other at incredible speeds. The freedom I feel from watching the small, yet striking birds soar along the breeze seemingly without a care in the world is a feeling I will never forget for the rest of my life. Both of these wonderful factors are my inspiration for this piece, which I hope to share with others as well.

I am a Year 8 student at Bossley Park High School. Throughout the majority of my life, Visual Arts has always been a way to express whatever was going through my mind. My preferred art mediums are digital art and pencil drawings. In the distant future, I hope that one day that I can create entirely different worlds and tell all sorts of fantastic stories through my art.
