Welcome to Fairfield Halls

BH Live is delighted to be custodians of this iconic venue. Working with our Croydon team, the local community and artistes we are so excited about giving you the best possible visitor experience in South London’s largest arts centre. Built in 1962, and affectionately referred to as the younger sister to the Royal Festival Hall, our Phoenix Concert Hall was designed by renowned acoustician, Hope Bagenal OBE. This wonderful space has been refurbished to its former glory whilst maintaining its famous acoustic integrity.

I am proud to welcome the London Mozart Players, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Czech Philharmonic and the ParaOrchestra to play in the coming months. A welcome return will also be made by local groups from across London including the Croydon Symphony Orchestra and the Croydon Philharmonic Choir.

Art Exhibition

Windrush by Jim Grover UNTIL SUNDAY 12TH JANUARY 2020 Windrush: Portrait of a Generation tells the story of how the first generation of Caribbean migrants, now in their late 60s to 90s, are living their lives in the heart of south London and remaining true to their distinctive traditions and culture. A year in the making, timed to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the arrival of SS Windrush, this exhibition was first staged in the Oxo Gallery on London’s South Bank in the summer of 2018 where it attracted 13,000 visitors and national media coverage. Created by award-winning social documentary photographer Jim Grover in clubs, homes, churches, cemeteries and memorials around Clapham, Brixton and Stockwell, this important exhibition tells the fascinating personal stories of this truly inspiring generation. Windrush: Portrait of a Generation will be restaged in the Arnhem Foyer as part of the re-opening of Fairfield Halls from Thursday 19th September to Sunday 12th January 2020.

This award-winning musical is fit to burst with unruly characters and show-stopping songs such as I Wanna be a Producer, Keep It Gay and the immortal Springtime For Hitler. This amateur production is presented by arrangement with Music Theatre International (Europe)

Angela’s Ashes – The Musical Angela’s Ashes – The Musical gets its UK premiere in this major musical adaptation of Frank McCourt’s memoir. The story is brought to life in this emotional telling of a childhood in Limerick and beyond, featuring unforgettable songs and melodies, told with a rare lyricism and a warm, inimitable sense of humour. As his parents struggle to provide for him and his brothers in 1940s Ireland, we follow young Frank’s escapades and experiences in a Dickensian landscape peopled by a drunken father, a helpless mother, pompous priests, bullying schoolmasters and money-lenders culminating in his defiant escape to a new life in America.

Introducing Talawa Theatre Company

Guys & Dolls, Royal Exchange and Talawa Theatre Company. Image by Manuel Harlan.

As its Artistic Director, I’m delighted to introduce Talawa Theatre Company to you. Talawa was founded in 1986 in response to the lack of creative opportunities for Black actors and the marginalisation of Black peoples from cultural processes. Today, Talawa is the primary Black led theatre company in the UK, with more than 50 touring productions from African classics to Oscar Wilde behind it. Talawa Theatre Company has performed work by writers like C.L.R. James, Derek Walcott, Michael Abbensetts, Wole Soyinka, Patricia Cumper, Mustapha Matura, Roy Williams, Jackie Kay, Kwame Kwei-Armah, Trish Cooke, Malorie Blackman, Michael Bhim, Arinze Kene, Theresa Ikoko, Tash Marshall and Nicôle Lecky. A number of Britain’s finest actors have worked with Talawa including Norman Beaton, Carmen Munroe, Mona Hammond, Doña Croll, Danny John-Jules, Cathy Tyson, Don Warrington, Sharon D Clarke, Nonso Anozie, Ashley Zhanghazha and Michaela Coel. 14

Talawa Theatre Company is a National Portfolio Organisation, supported by funding from Arts Council England in recognition of consistently high quality artistic work and audience development. Our name, Talawa, comes from a Jamaican patois term and means gutsy and strong.

‘Me lickle but me Talawa.’ Talawa writers, directors and personnel now work in all areas of British theatre, radio, TV and film. These achievements demonstrate the Company’s continually growing status, influence and contribution to contemporary British theatre and the cultural life of the UK.

‘Talawa’s enduring faith in developing new artists is remarkable.’ Michaela Coel

Artist Development at Talawa

Talawa in Croydon

As well as touring major works across the UK, Talawa Theatre Company broadens the spectrum of work created by Black British artists by commissioning new writing, and the development of ideas through seed commissions.

Talawa Theatre Company has taken up residence within the redeveloped Fairfield Halls in Croydon, giving the UK’s primary Black theatre company a 200 seat studio and offices.

These programmes fall under Talawa’s MAKE initiative: A UK wide community of Black theatre makers empowered to create their own path through a range of development activity. The MAKE community creates 250 new opportunities for Black artists every year, enabling artists to make connections and build the support they need to create new work. MAKE is supported by the Esmée Fairbain Foundation.

This will be the first time since 1995 that Talawa’s headquarters will feature an on-site performance space. Fairfield Halls provides a home for Black theatre artists, enabling them to make outstanding work which will truly diversify and shape the cultural life of the whole country.

Diversity projects tend to be just that – projects... what we need is sustained engagement that provides artists with a pathway into the industry, and the footholds to keep them there. Talawa MAKE activity includes: • Talawa Firsts, an annual Festival showcasing new plays and work by Black writers and theatre makers • Community Engagement with artists, and people across communities, to enable conversations, explore new ways of working, and to enable all voices to be heard • Outreach activities, including bespoke or curriculum based workshops for all ages and abilities, which are artistic or related to participants’ personal and social development • Talawa boosts the writing skills of emerging and established writers, strengthening and ensuring their career growth and position within the industry, through initiatives such as its Script Reading Service, Talawa Writers’ Programme, script development, and Talawa Firsts MAKE Online is also available to all Black theatre artists and creatives at every stage of their careers and offers a way for artists to connect with each other and with the industry, it’s free and available at talawamake.com

Run It Back, Talawa Theatre Company 2018. Image by Sanaa Abstrakt.

The new spaces will operate as a central hub for Black artists, and enable us to develop a community outreach programme, and create, develop and premiere new work. The new residency will also create opportunities to train young Black artists in technical and creative theatre disciplines, suited to Croydon’s status as the London borough with the largest youth population, and working in partnership with organisations in the borough and nationally. In addition to premiering and developing new work, Talawa Theatre Company hopes to create a programme of activities, debates and events with Croydon’s diverse community. We’re delighted to be in Croydon and at Fairfield Halls, and we are looking forward to meeting you too. 15

MILOŠ: The Voice of the Guitar

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra

This concert is a journey through music and time. It uses the classical guitar and its unique voice as a vehicle, showcasing full range of colours and influences, through the works and musicians that defined it. Whilst the names of some of the composers in this programme may be unfamiliar, the music itself will often be much better known. More familiar composers will reflect Miloš’s classical training at the Royal Academy of Music, whilst other pieces will showcase the link to his early training in Montenegro and his interest in the guitar as an instrument that is an intrinsic part of the Mediterranean environment, he grew up in. Concluding the programme, Miloš showcases his latest project with the music of The Beatles. Miloš is joined by members of the 12 Ensemble.

A concert by Romani children from the Čhavorenge choir led by Ida Kelarová and her team accompanied by musicians from the Czech Philharmonic.

Haydn Symphony No.74 Beethoven Piano Concerto No.2 Mozart Symphony No.40

“Romani children don’t feel welcome in our society. Breaking free from the vicious circle of settlements and ghettos into a world where they are expected to succeed, be self-confident and achieve is hugely difficult. We strive to create a motivating environment which allows them to follow their dreams and goals and pursue their own life stories. But the energy we invest in these children doesn’t pay off immediately – it takes time. I’m delighted that the Czech Philharmonic has been by our side over the past five years. Even though we’ve made great progress, I realise that it may take several generations before we witness long-lasting change and for the results of our efforts to bear fruit.”

Christian Zacharias Piano/Conductor “I want to present music as a language and a means of story-telling. I want to show other people what amazes me, what is hidden beneath the notes.” Christian Zacharias and the ECO explore the happiest heights and profoundest sorrows of the Classical era: Haydn’s Symphony No.74, a controlled explosion of sunlight and joy; Mozart’s ever-popular 40th; and the glittering energy and wit of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.2, directed by Zacharias from the keyboard. ‘It’s as absorbing to watch as to listen.’ The Independent

Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol

John Rutter’s Christmas Celebration John Rutter Conductor James McVinnie Organ The Temple Church Choir The Purcell Singers Your Christmas treat truly awaits as John Rutter and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra bring you a concert that is guaranteed to get you into the festive spirit. One of the nation’s favourite composers, John Rutter presents and conducts a selection of his own popular works and arrangements, in a concert brimming with sing-along carols, rousing fanfares and festive favourites to fill you with Christmas sparkle and cheer.

Festive seasons past, present and future combine in this seasonal treat as Charles Dickens gives a dramatic re-telling of his classic tale: A Christmas Carol. In this brand-new adaptation, actor Tama Matheson breathes fresh life into Dickens who takes to the stage to tell his moving morality tale of Scrooge, Marley, Tiny Tim and all those Christmas ghosts, accompanied by an atmospheric soundscape of Christmas carols performed by the Trinity Boys Choir and a string quartet from the London Mozart Players. By turns gloriously funny, sad, joyous and heart-rending, this evocative blend of carols and drama captures the wonder, pathos and sheer spookiness of this Christmas classic. It’s the perfect way to get into the Christmas spirit!
