THE FAIRFIELD

AWARDS DINNER Celebrating a Tradition of Opportunity

THURSDAY, MARCH 30, 2017 | GRAND HYATT NEW YORK

OUR DIVERSITY VISION STATEMENT As a Jesuit and Catholic institution, Fairfield University’s commitment to the God-given dignity of the human person requires that we create an environment that promotes justice and fosters a deep understanding of human and cultural diversity. Fairfield is committed to encouraging dialogue among those with differing points of view in order to realize an integral understanding of what it means to be human. The University recognizes that transcending the nation’s political and social divisions is a matter of valuing diversity and learning respect for individuals, in their similarities and their differences. Fairfield will continue to integrate diversity in all facets of University life — academic, administrative, social, and spiritual — as together, the community seeks to realize a vision of common good that is rooted in genuine human solidarity. Fairfield University defines diversity in the broadest sense, reflecting its commitment to creating a more inclusive community that is reflective of the richly diverse global community of which we are part. Diversity encompasses not only racial, ethnic, and religious diversity, but also diversity of socioeconomic contexts, cultural perspectives, national origins, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, abilities, and educational backgrounds.

DINNER Continue the celebration at our annual after party, sponsored by the Fairfield University Alumni Association.

GREETINGS FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends: Tonight’s 29th Annual Fairfield Awards Dinner is a particularly special one as it falls on the occasion of our 75th Anniversary. Certainly, it is a great honor for me to be serving as interim president at this celebratory moment in the history of our proud institution. When in 1942, Rev. John J. McEleney, S.J., and his six fellow Jesuits met in Pomfret to create the articles of association for what would then be called The Fairfield College of St. Robert Bellarmine, they were doing so at a time of war. Rationing was underway, and the young men of the United States were being drafted into the Armed Forces. Yet those founders were animated by hope and faith in what was to come. They foresaw that the wellbeing of the broader community in the years after the war would depend upon young men — and women — given the education and the formation required to build a secure, prosperous, and peaceful future. Their vision has been fulfilled. All of us gathered tonight for this Awards Dinner are walking in the footsteps of our founders, carrying forward their inspiration, and continuing to work in the service of this mission in education — providing educational opportunities to worthy students so that they can go forward and serve their communities. This is the spirit in which Fairfield University was founded 75 years ago, and is true to the spirit of St. Ignatius himself, who came to understand — now almost 500 years ago — that the only way to transform the world for the better was to educate men and women equipped to embrace that task. This is what the Awards Dinner is all about — embracing that vision of St. Ignatius, and that of Fr. McEleney and his six companions. This willingness to embrace the mission of Jesuit education is as vital today as it has ever been. Thank you for joining me in honoring tonight’s honorees, all of whom embody the virtues that we uphold as a learning community, and thank you for your commitment to our common purpose! Sincerely,

Lynn M. Babington, PhD, RN

The Optimist Creed ….To make all your friends feel that there is something worthwhile in them. To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and expect only the best. To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future …. By Christian D. Larson in 1912, excerpted from plaque hanging on Dan’s office wall throughout his career and quoted by him in the Forward to Contagious Optimism, on which he collaborated with David Mezzapelle ’90.

KATHERINE A. SCHWAB, PhD Professor of Visual and Performing Arts

W

hen reflecting on all her years at Fairfield, Katherine Schwab, PhD, finds it a rewarding task to continually keep her students engaged.

“Courses I teach focus on people and their cultural achievements from a long time ago, usually 2,500 years ago,” Dr. Schwab said. “How to make that relevant to students in my classes is an exciting challenge and one that offers shared questions over time and space.” Dr. Schwab has taught at Fairfield University since 1988, after completing her PhD at the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University. She received her BA from Scripps College and her MA from Southern Methodist University. Her research areas include the Parthenon metopes and ancient Greek hairstyles. Her work on the Parthenon east and north metopes, a component of the large sculptural program and facilitated by the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, has yielded new information on their original appearance. Results have been presented in the U.S. and internationally, and in several book chapter publications. Her Parthenon drawings form a traveling exhibition, An Archaeologist’s Eye: The Parthenon Drawings of Katherine A. Schwab, touring the U.S. 2014-2018. Gray-scale scans of her drawings are permanently installed in the Acropolis Museum. She has curated exhibitions including Photographs of the Caryatid Hairstyling Project (2015) highlighting a video project (2009) that has been screened in Greece, Japan, Italy, and the U.S. Most recently she and Marice Rose, PhD, co-curated the exhibition, Hair in the Classical World, at the Bellarmine Hall Galleries (2015).

“In exploring ancient cultures I endeavor to encourage my students to seek their own creative and intellectual potential...” “In exploring ancient cultures I endeavor to encourage my students to seek their own creative and intellectual potential,” Dr. Schwab said about her teaching style. “My students build a web of knowledge that forges links with a continuum of knowledge through the millennia.” As curator of the Plaster Cast Collection at Fairfield University, Dr. Schwab oversees a collection of 100 casts from gifts and long-term renewable loans from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as gifts from Yale University Art Gallery, the Acropolis Museum and individual donors. Previously, she served as department chair for two consecutive terms, and as Art History program director for several years. She was the inaugural faculty member of the College of Arts and Sciences Advisory Board. Her areas of expertise and interest encompass Greek and Roman Art and Archaeology with courses developed in those areas and which are cross-listed with the Classical Studies program. She created the first courses in non-western art and Asian art for the curriculum. Students frequently participate in her research projects (plaster cast collection and ancient hairstyles) and contribute to brochures and other literature for campus and web-based visitors.

ALUMNI SERVICE AWARD

ROBERT M. MCMAHON ’87, P’20

R

ob is being honored for his many years of volunteer leadership and effort on behalf of Fairfield, including: Friends of Soccer, Dolan School of Business Advisory Board member, Parent Leadership Council, Reunion Volunteer and former member of the Trustees Advisory Council. “I do what I do because of the gratitude that I have for the University and for all the things it has provided me over the years,” McMahon continued, explaining that he credits his Fairfield education for the critical thinking and writing skills that have served him well in both graduate studies at Northwestern University and in his 30-plus-year banking career at both GE Capital and ABN Amro.

“I do what I do because of the gratitude that I have for the University and for all the things it has provided me over the years.” McMahon, an economics major, also said that he’s grateful for his Fairfield relationships. His wife of more than 26 years is Kristin (Dodge) ’87, who serves on the Alumni Association Board of Directors. Residents of the town of Fairfield, they have two daughters — Elisabeth and Emma — and Elisabeth is a first-year student at Fairfield. “Although Kristin and I were the first in our families to attend Fairfield — I’ve lost count now — but we’re up to 12 or 13 family members that have attended or are currently attending Fairfield, and that number is still growing.” McMahon is also thankful for the friendships he made while at Fairfield. He still keeps in touch with fellow alumni from the soccer team, his dormmates from Jogues Hall, friends from FUSA (Fairfield University Student Association) and beyond. While keeping in touch has been fun, McMahon takes his role as Friends of Soccer president seriously. Since about 2000, McMahon has mentored scores of student-athletes, helped connect them to industries, internships or jobs and assisted in honing their interview and resume-writing skills. Now, those alumni continue to come back to mentor the current student-athletes. “In a very Kevin Bacon kind of way, you touch people, who touch people, who touch people, which is an amazing reward in and of itself,” McMahon said. “The people who come out of Fairfield have a bond that lasts a lifetime.”

ALUMNI PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

DOUGLAS W. HAMMOND ’86 Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, NFP

T

his year, Fairfield University recognizes Doug Hammond ’86 with the Alumni Professional Achievement Award because of his executive leadership, business acumen, entrepreneurial spirit and continued commitment to the Jesuit mission through ethical business practices. Doug is the chairman and chief executive officer of NFP, a leading insurance broker and consultant that provides employee benefits, property and casualty, retirement and individual private client solutions. Hammond said that it was his time at Fairfield as a politics major that allowed him to explore his faith without judgment, create lifelong friendships and take courses that gave him a broad appreciation for the arts.

“I think that’s the beauty of a strong liberal arts education — you don’t realize it when it’s happening but you develop the skills to be a lifelong passionate learner, to be nimble with new information and concepts — so your opportunities are limitless.” With NFP since 1999, Doug has held multiple leadership roles, including Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel. Under his leadership, NFP has grown to $1 billion in revenue and is recognized by Business Insurance as the 5th largest global benefits broker by revenue and the 4th largest U.S.- based privately owned broker. The company is also the 2nd fastest growing U.S. large-group employee benefits broker, as ranked by Employee Benefit Adviser, and the 5th biggest provider of nonqualified deferred compensation plan, as ranked by PlanSponsor. Doug continues to advance initiatives that expand NFP’s capabilities and underscore the company’s strong personal commitment to its clients and employees. In addition to his role at NFP, Doug serves on the Board of Directors for Kestra Financial, one of the largest independent registered broker- dealers in the U.S. He is also a member of the Financial Services Advisory Board of MDP and serves on the Advisory Board of the University’s Dolan School of Business. He’s also the co-author of Reinsurance Law, a leading subscription treatise on reinsurance practice and legal trends. Doug received Juris Doctor from St. John’s University School of Law. He lives in Cold Spring Harbor, NY, with his wife Trish and four children, John, Will, Joe and Ava. “I’m a guy who was a corporate finance and mergers and acquisition attorney for many years and now run a big insurance brokerage and consulting company and I’ve never taken a business or accounting or finance class in my life,” Hammond said. “I think that’s the beauty of a strong liberal arts education — you don’t realize it when it’s happening but you develop the skills to be a lifelong passionate learner, to be nimble with new information and concepts — so your opportunities are limitless.”

FAIRFIELD UNIVERSITY JOHN PAGANO MBA’04, MS’06 Meet the Alumni Association President “It’s important to stay connected to each other. It’s about synergy, and we need to connect the Fairfield generations,” said John Pagano MBA’04, MS’06, who was sworn in as president of the Alumni Association this past summer. Pagano, son of Edmond Pagano ’64, is the first graduate school alumnus to ever serve in the role and he is ready to lead: “This is a great responsibility and I’m honored to have the role,” he said. During his tenure as president he hopes to continue initiatives launched by the Alumni Association, such as the successful Job Shadow Program, and to bring even more graduate students into the cultural fold of the University. When asked what it means to be a Fairfield graduate, Pagano said: “Fairfield alumni are very driven, always looking to do the best they can do — passionate in their work and entrepreneurial spirit and they have a kind of welcoming warmth.”

Fairfield University Alumni Association Your time at college shapes you, providing you with experiences that stay with you long after you leave campus. We like to think that this is especially true for Fairfield alumni, who are known for staying connected with their fellow classmates years after graduation. One way they make this happen is by getting involved with the Alumni Association. Comprised of a wide representation of Fairfield alumni — demographically, geographically, in occupation, and graduation year, the Association’s Board of Directors work hand-in-hand with the University to represent their fellow alumni and be your voice back to Fairfield. Make sure to stay connected by following us on social media and letting us know you’d like to be involved.

Stay in Touch We invite you to learn more about the many networking, educational and volunteer opportunities available to our alumni and parents. There’s something for everyone to show their Stag Pride and stay connected to Fairfield!
