Dolan Lecture: “Wall Street Top 50” Kathleen Murphy ’84 “The Dolan Lecture features highly accomplished, visionary and internationally recognized business leaders as exemplars for our students, and I can think of no one who better fits this vision than Kathleen Murphy,” said Dean Gibson. “She’s an example of taking a Fairfield education and becoming an impactful leader with that foundation.” Murphy earned her bachelor of arts degree, summa cum laude, in economics and political science from Fairfield and later graduated from University of Connecticut Law School with highest honors. Beyond her work with Fidelity, Murphy sits on the Board of Governors of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), the Board of Directors of the Markle Foundation, the Board of Directors of America’s Promise Alliance and the Board of Directors of the National Football Foundation. Murphy’s professional achievements have earned her nationwide recognition, repeatedly being named one of the “50 Most Powerful Women in American Business”

Charles F. Dolan Receives Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree Fairfield University proudly bestowed a degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, upon Charles F. Dolan, longtime University Trustee, founder of HBO and Cablevision, part-owner of Madison Square Garden and visionary in the telecommunications business. The ceremony, held November 2, 2016, included influential community members, University faculty and staff and University President Jeffrey P. von Arx, S.J., who praised the entrepreneur, credited as a pioneer in the expansion of the television industry. Dolan is also the founder of the Lustgarten Foundation, the largest private foundation that supports research into pancreatic cancer. “What Charles Dolan has accomplished is nothing less than to have dramatically expanded the imagination of our culture, and in doing so, expanded the reach of information and education to many who might otherwise have been denied what that culture has to offer,” Fr. von Arx said. In 2000, the University’s Charles F. Dolan School of Business was named in his honor after Dolan donated $25 million to the school. “Fairfield University has been extraordinarily fortunate to have benefited from Charles Dolan’s example, support and inspiration,” said Fr. von Arx. “Thanks to his support, the Charles F. Dolan School of Business is one of the premier business schools in the nation — and one with a reputation that is rising all the time.” Fr. von Arx continued, “Our graduates are sought after in financial industry, media, marketing, accounting and so on — and they are particularly sought after because of their entrepreneurial spirit, anchored to a strong ethical foundation. In many respects, they have been formed in the tradition and example of Charles Dolan.”

“Chuck Dolan is that combination that a Jesuit business school is all about:

developing business people who succeed on the strength of their motivation and smarts, but do so with humility and respect. He’s

such a role model for our students,” said Dean Gibson. 4

“The energy, the people and the role that the financial market plays in the global economy are reasons I enjoy working in this industry,” explained Fallon. “You’re at the center of some really interesting events in this business. While a number of the big banks will come to campus to recruit, there is also a very broad range of other financial service firms to consider. Cast a wide net and look at all of your options.”

Student Driven Business Solutions Today more than ever it is important for students to step outside of the classroom and put learning into practice as a way to prepare for their first job after college. Professors at the Dolan School make this a priority and have built a network of local businesses that can benefit from assistance from our students. This form of exchange exposes Dolan students to real world business cases while also supporting companies in the local community. The following are a few examples of this learning model:

Moffly Media Fairfield County Publishing Company Last semester Godbole’s students worked with Moffly Media in Westport. The company wanted to gain a better understanding of the market’s perception of Fairfield Living magazine. “We all had opinions, but nothing was based on fact,” shared CFO, Brian Feidt. “The findings really validated a lot of things we talk about but didn’t have the data to back up. Spotlight on Student Internships On average our students complete over two internships during their academic career. Internships are a key component of the job search process because they offer students the opportunity to explore their professional interests, gain real world experience in their preferred field and practice their networking skills. The Dolan School would like to highlight the following internship success stories: Going For Gold: Working at NBC During the Olympics

Student Clubs Fostering Real-World Learning on Campus The Dolan School has seen student club and event involvement continue to grow as students expand their academic development outside of the classroom. Striving for multifaceted and real-world insights, active student clubs at the Dolan School go beyond monthly meetings with cutting edge presentations by industry leaders. One of the largest DSB clubs, the Marketing Club, estimates 350 members and draws substantial attendance to School of Business and club-sponsored events. Club president Gianna Kinhofer credits the Marketing Club’s success to efforts organizing programs with marketing executives who provide students with career exemplars. One such exemplar was Bruno Bich, Chairman and CEO of the BIC Group, who spoke on “Marketing in the Global Economy.” “He absolutely captivated the room during his lecture, making it one of the Marketing Club’s most successful kickoff events,” said Kinhofer. The club branched into sports marketing this semester, inviting representatives from Octagon Sports Marketing to speak with students about their advertising initiatives. They also invited guest speaker Ken Washburn, senior director and strategic account

Kelsey Washburn ’17 said the presentation was inspiring, “He had incredible global marketing experience with BIC, recording sales in 160 countries and on every continent. His visit to Fairfield has had a positive impact on students because we’ve had the chance to learn from a CEO of a truly global company.”

Panelists Mancini and Nazemetz shared their personal insights and experiences, and students learned what to expect after graduation in regards to the intricacies and issues involving business ethics. “Our vision for the Dolan School of Business is that we develop students to be ‘ethical business leaders for a global future,’” said Dr. Donald Gibson, dean of the Dolan School. “This panel is an excellent illustration of how we do this: by exposing students to the ethical realities of business life.”

Cindi Bigelow Presents “Lessons my Father Taught Me” Cindi Bigelow, the third generation president of Bigelow Tea, presented her lecture, “Lessons my Father Taught Me,” on November 15, 2016 as part of an event sponsored by the Center for Applied Ethics. An advocate of the importance of ethical values in corporate culture and business decision-making, Bigelow has spoken and blogged about the vital role her father played in her own ethical formation. During the lecture Bigelow emphasized the responsibility she feels she has to the people who source her products to make Bigelow Tea. She discussed how she travels around the world to meet the people Bruno Bich 15
