YOUR COLLEGE EXPERIENCE WON’T BE MEASURED IN YEARS OR EVEN SEMESTERS. At Fairfield University, your time as a student is measured in moments. Hundreds and thousands of them—challenging moments, profound moments, fun moments, moments of clarity. They build on each other, make you who you are, and who you want to become. These moments take place on and off campus, in and out of class, but they all have one thing in common—they make Fairfield an experience with depth. The learning goes deeper, your friendships are stronger, and the experience stays with you for the rest of your life. And it starts right now, as we encourage you to look a little deeper in this book, and discover everything a Fairfield education can offer you—the moments that guide, define, and make you.

LET CURIOSITY GET THE BEST OF YOU
Our foundation is called the Core Curriculum. But it’s more than just a set of classes—it’s a chance for you to explore different disciplines and subjects, exposing you to new perspectives and expanding your knowledge. When you delve into the Fairfield Core, you’ll take classes that let you explore how creative thinking helps unlock new ideas, how to solve problems using data analysis, and discover strengths and passions you didn’t even know you had. Along the way, you’ll explore how different classes and majors relate to each other, like how social justice is connected to biology that relies on mathematics. New ideas and skills will build on one another to make you an adept thinker and an adaptable individual, capable of success wherever you go. Just likein life, no matter where you go or how you learn, you’ll always return to the basics over and over again.

WHEN A FEAR OF FAILURE IS REPLACED BY A WILL TO SUCCEED
WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE, GROUND GETS BROKEN.
Every issue, every problem, every task has an astounding number of sides and thousands of different viewpoints from which to approach it. We believe bringing people from different areas of study together to tackle these issues lends clarity, and clarity leads to solutions.
Some schools call this interdisciplinary. We call it problem-solving. It’s the student who double majors in biology and international studies, who earns a scholarship to study infectious diseases in Africa. It’s the study that aligns the nursing school with the business school, to give a health program an amplified voice. It’s the professor who realizes her students need to be adaptable leaders, so takes them out of class to find real world solutions to real world problems.
WHERE DOING SOMETHING DIFFERENT CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
NURSING STUDENT JENNIFER DELSOLE LEARNED THAT EVEN UNDERGRADS CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN HEALTHCARE.
Unlike most universities, undergraduates at Fairfield have opportunities to conduct research projects with faculty mentors. So when Jennifer teamed up with Dr. Eileen O’Shea to study the value of a lead poison prevention program, she knew she was in for an experience that few undergraduate nursing students get the chance to undertake. Jennifer and Dr. O’Shea went to local elementary schools as part of a service-learning project, which is an opportunity for Fairfield students to link academic studies with community service, so that both are strengthened. While Jennifer gathered data, she was also educating children on how to identify and avoid lead paint in their environment. She eventually presented the project at the National Society for Pediatric Nursing in Nashville, as one of the few undergraduates in attendance. “Everyone in nursing school has the same classes, same experiences,” says Jennifer. “I can truly say that I did something different.”
COLLEGE OF ARTS & SCIENCES
The College of Arts and Sciences has the largest offering of courses at Fairfield. Working closely with a passionate faculty, you’ll have the opportunity for civic engagement and hands-on research across many disciplines: the arts and humanities, natural sciences and mathematics, and social and behavioral sciences. This integrated approach to education will provide you with the necessary tools and knowledge to succeed in work and in life. Even if your major isn’t in this college, you’ll still take your core classes in the College of Arts and Sciences.

TO GET THE MOST OUT OF COLLEGE, GET OUT. The study abroad programs at Fairfield can take you many different places on earth, but they’ll all take you beyond your expectations. You’ll be exposed to a wealth of learning opportunities, including how different cultures approach problem solving and creative thinking. Study language in Florence, Italy; business in Brisbane, Australia; or a subject of your choice at one of our many overseas partner universities. Explore what service learning means in Tanzania or Nicaragua. And discover what a completely different culture can teach you about your own.
The Office of International Programs partners with universities all over the world, with programs that include locations like:
The University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, a place endowed with spectacular natural beauty, and a rich tapestry of peoples and cultures that stretch back hundreds of years. The University and the local Jesuit community will provide critical support to students, helping them to connect service opportunities with their academic interests.

EFFORT FEELS EFFORTLESS Just because something is challenging doesn’t make it taxing. In fact, many of our student organizations and activities give you the chance to learn while you’re hanging out with some of your best friends, making plans or discussing how to make the University (and the world) better, and putting those plans into action. Perhaps the best example of this is the Fairfield University Student Association. It’s known around here as FUSA, and it’s one of the most popular student groups on campus, offering some of the best opportunities for leadership. Not only do they plan campus events— including the annual (and incredibly popular) “President’s Ball”—they’re also responsible for advocating for student needs and concerns.

FIND A PLACE TO LOSE YOURSELF There’s a lot to be excited about in college, but at Fairfield we give you a whole new reason: proximity to the beach. The town of Fairfield’s coastal location means you can spend every morning before class running on the sand bar at low tide, or spend the evenings cooking out on your deck. Give back to the community by participating in a clean up day on the beach, or organize a quick study session with classmates in beach chairs. And do it all with time to spare for class. And when you’re a senior, you may have the opportunity to live on the beach. Not near the beach, on it. Every year, around 400 seniors move into homes on the beach, close to campus. It’s just one of many unforgettable ways Fairfield turns an education into an experience, and an experience into an education.

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART (AND MIND) IS.
Your strongest bonds at college will most likely be with your roommates and housemates. These bonds are where your community starts to take shape, and solidifies over four years. We think it should be more than just comfortable, but intellectually and spiritually fulfilling. To that end, we’ve created the Fairfield Residential Colleges, a chance for you and fellow students to live and learn side-by-side, engaging in dinners and conversation with fellow students, mentors, and even faculty members. Our signature program is the Ignatian Residential College. Students in this community seek to better understand the world by asking such questions as “Who am I,” “Whose am I” and “Who am I called to be,” using the answers as jumping-off points for better understanding themselves and their place in the world. No matter which residential college you belong to, you’ll use reflection and a common cause to discover deeper intellectual, social, and spiritual truths about each other and the world— and you’ll be better equipped to answer life’s biggest questions.

SECOND NATURE At Fairfield, we believe in providing a return on the investment you’ve made in your education. Most likely, that will come in the form of a career that you’re passionate about diving into. And we’ll help you take your first step into that career. Our faculty and staff work with you to develop a course of study with an eye toward your future. That might mean enhancing your classes with research opportunities. It could mean finding the right internships for you. Or it might be as simple as discussing what sort of career you’d like to work toward, and which classes and opportunities will lead you there. One such out-of-class opportunity is the Business Plan Competition, sponsored by the Dolan School of Business. It combines research, planning, networking, and creativity into one school-wide competition, with real cash prizes. Last year’s innovations included solar-power phone chargers, heart rate monitors, music-sharing applications, and clothing items for cancer patients.

FROM A MINOR IN FILM CAME A MAJOR DISCOVERY IN LIFE
KATIE DELLAMAGGIORE (’00) STARTED OUT AS A COMMUNICATION MAJOR WITHOUT A MAP. Communication led Katie to a film minor and Rev. James Mayzik, SJ, associate professor of film, television and media arts, who helped Katie find her passion with one assignment: putting together short stories of seniors who were reflecting on their upcoming graduation. Soon after, she landed an internship at MTV, which she parlayed into a full-time job. But her love of documentaries still loomed large. She went on to create a production company— Rescue Media—and her first documentary Brooklyn Castle is an unlikely story of an impoverished middle school in Brooklyn, New York, and its national dominance in chess. It’s a story of truly inspired students from a truly inspired filmmaker, whose spark was ignited at Fairfield.
