CHAPTER 10

A Game of Nerves

"No worries, you've got this," muttered Kev as he clambered up the ladder towards the open roof window. He was nervous, and although he told himself that there was a logical explanation for the disappearance of his golden drop bear statue, deep down, he couldn't shake off the feeling that the statue was cursed and a drop bear himself had stolen it.

At the top, he slowly stretched his head out of the opening, before jumping outside to get a closer look, but still, he didn't see anything unusual. No footprints, no traces. Carefully, he glanced down the roof and saw his car, his ladder and still no clues. Kev knew it was time to investigate the last (and intentionally ignored location) – the crown of his tree. He raised his head but closed his eyes. His heart pounded. Hesitantly, he opened his left eye, then his right one, which, for whatever reason, took away a bit of his fear that something would attack him. The blurry image of his beautifully bloomed treetop became clearer until it became crystal clear that nothing suspicious was going on. He snorted in relief.

A second later, he jumped up in a panic, his feet lost their grip, and he stumbled backward, falling through the window and crashing down the ladder.

With a loud moan, he rubbed the back

It took throbbing paws from knocking until the sleepy Kate opened the door. Kev rushed inside and blurted out, "Are you all right?" But before she could answer, a loud crack echoed from the roof and Kev's eyes immediately jumped to the window, where they saw an innocent blue feather, twirling and spinning through the air. And Kevin knew - Kate’s statue was gone...
