The Fair Trade Mother’s Day Shopping Guide 2020 showcases a wonderful selection of Fair Trade products with the aim of introducing you to Fair Trade principles that motivate and guide the association’s work. On Mother’s Day we show appreciation for our own mothers and for the mothers in other communities that created many of these products. Mothers who are skilled and resilient artisans, farmers or workers. Mothers who are leaders, who advocate the same values of fairness as our own did. Buying these products means you are directly supporting vulnerable communities, ensuring your purchase has far reaching positive impact in these trying times.
Using this guide This guide will help you find Fair Trade products that are unique and beautiful, supporting the people who created them. By clicking on the image of each product you will be directed to the website of the business selling that product to learn more about the product and make your purchase. Each business in this guide has a story about how and why they support Fair Trade. View the business listing at the end of the guide to learn more. We hope you enjoy your shopping and discover something special and unique for your mother this Mother’s Day.
Why Fair Trade? Fair Trade is a movement: a socially innovative response to market failure – the failure of the conventional trade system to provide just wages, safe working conditions and environmental standards for vulnerable communities. Fair Trade challenges unfair trading practices by creating an alternative approach to international trade by providing: a system that seeks greater equity in price setting for producers, farmers, artisans and workers fair payment that covers the cost of production· a local living wage that covers the basics of food, shelter, clothing, education and medical care· reinvestment into community schools, health care clinics and skills development· solutions that respect and care for our natural environment. You can recognise businesses that support the Fair Trade movement by looking for the three logos below.
Fair Traders of Australia Fair Traders of Australia are businesses that have been endorsed by the Fair Trade Association of ANZ through a verification programme that checks businesses meet standards based on the World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO) 10 Principles of Fair Trade. Verification of Fair Trade claims has never been more important in an age of globalised markets and unsubstantiated ‘fair-washing’. It is a central objective of the Association to provide consumer assurance on this issue. The Fair Trader of Australia endorsement confirms the Australian based business is applying the 10 Fair Trade Principles. These businesses sell a range of artisan and handcrafted homeware, gifts, fashion and accessories or food and beverages. The products they sell may also be endorsed by Fairtrade label or WFTO.
World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO) The World Fair Trade Organisation is a global body of producers and traders committed to 100% Fair Trade. Its Guarantee System is robust and certifiable, guaranteeing members comply to the WFTO Standard and the 10 Principles of Fair Trade. Any use of the label guarantees the organisation rather than the product.
Fairtrade™ Fairtrade is a product certification label. A business can use the Fairtrade label on products certified as meeting international Fairtrade standards. Common Fairtrade products include chocolate, coffee, tea and cotton. Visit fairtrade.com.au DISCLAIMER: While we have sought to include only businesses that stock Fair Trade products or operate according to Fair Trade Principles no guarantee or formal endorsement is given on any listed business in regards to their Fair Trade operations other than those Fair Trader endorsed businesses, WFTO member organisations or Fairtrade Certified products which carry the Fairtrade label.
