SPEAKERS Sam Bills, Ten Thousand Villages Pasadena - Sam has been serving as the executive manager of Ten Thousand Villages Pasadena since 2006. He was drawn to work in fair trade by its potential to organize and form communities to work for peace with justice. Sam was surprised to also discover a passion for business development, budgets, and inventory management, none of which were included in the course listing at Fuller Seminary where he received an MDiv. Sam is married to Rosie and while neither of them are native Californians they now have three California born children. Nadia Bredthauer, ProPueblo - Born in El Salvador, Nadia Bredthauer grew up in Ecuador and has worked in Switzerland, Thailand, and the United States. Growing up in a family that valued community projects, she established Pro Pueblo USA in 2008 as an entrepreneurial Fair Trade organization. Pro Pueblo USA generates opportunities for over 300 artisans in impoverished coastal Ecuador who carve the local tagua nut, a sustainable resource, into marketable goods. Nadia serves on the Board of Directors for Enable USA and is an active part of the Clarkston Mentoring Program Village Cap. & Social Enterprise at Goizueta Business School. Bená Burda, Maggie’s Organics - After attending University of Michigan, Bená spent 14 years in the organic food industry, when a farmer introduced her to organic cotton. She founded Maggie’s Organics in 1992 to save acres of cotton from chemical cultivation. Soon after, the company began to adopt fair labor practices as Bená helped to form a number of 100% worker-owned cooperatives in Nicaragua and the US. In May 2002, Bená was recognized by the Organic Trade Association with the prestigious “Special Pioneer Award,” and in 2004, she was voted one of the “25 People who Most Influenced the Organics Industry.” Michele Burnett, Ten Thousand Villages Canada - Michele Burnett is a Regional Sales Manager for Ten Thousand Villages Canada, overseeing operations in 18 stores across British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and New Brunswick. Prior to joining Ten Thousand Villages in 2006, Michele’s career focused on Visual Display and

Brad Burrow, Artisans’ Hope - For the past four years, Brad has been the manager of Artisans’ Hope in Harrisonburg, VA. He first became directly involved in the world of Fair Trade while working with Divine Chocolate-US. After earning a MBA from the University of Kansas, he actively pursued working with organizations creating positive social and environmental change. In his free time he volunteers as a board member of the Friendly City Food Cooperative and remains active keeping up with his two sons, home brewing, listening to music and spending as much family time outdoors as possible.

Sam Carpenter, Global Gifts - Sam Carpenter serves as Executive Director of Global Gifts, a nonprofit fair trade organization with three stores in Central Indiana. Sam served on the board of the Fair Trade Resource Network and as its chair in 2009. Sam was recognized with the Indianapolis Business Journal’s 2010 “40 Under 40” award for his work with Global Gifts and fair trade. Sam wrote his master’s thesis on the subject of fair trade and served as editor of the illustrated children’s book “Think Fair Trade First!”

John Foote, Grunfeld Desiderio Lebowitz Silverman & Klestadt, LLP - John Foote is a customs and international trade attorney with Grunfeld, Desiderio, Lebowitz, Silverman & Klestadt LLP (“GDLSK”) in New York. GDLSK is the largest law firm in the country exclusively devoted to the practice of customs and international trade law. John’s practice is oriented around helping businesses save money on import transactions, ensuring that import and export transactions are lawful, and resolving complications arising from cross-border transactions. Prior to joining GDLSK, John served as a judicial law clerk at the U.S. Court of International Trade for four years. Pushpika Freitas, MarketPlace: Handwork of India - Pushpika Freitas founded and directed the Leprosy Rehabilitation Center in Mumbai, India and later founded the nonprofit organization, SHARE (Support the Handicapped Rehabilitation Effort). SHARE was the first cooperative of women artisans in Mumbai and currently works with 14


cooperatives. In 1986 Pushpika founded MarketPlace: Handwork of India to create markets for artisan-made fair trade products. Using a “Leadership by Design” strategy, SHARE and MarketPlace allow women to earn a living and learn management skills transferable to other aspects of their lives. Innovative programs like Global Dialog connect artisans with consumers and provide a platform for artisans to discuss, discover and act.

Karen Gibbs, ByHand Consulting - Karen was drawn into the artisan sphere through her interest in economic development and her aspirations to use the “trade not aid” approach—and she has never left! Karen has seen first-hand how the artisan sector touches on all aspects of sustainable economic development through her work with non-profit organizations—including Aid to Artisans and HAND/EYE—while serving as consultant for international development organizations, and as a co-founder of a successful import/wholesale company. Karen leads ByHand Consulting’s project management and new business initiatives and is an active Board member of HAND/EYE.

Manju Gupta, Equal Exchange - Equal Exchange has created Big Change for over 25 years. It all started with an idea: what if food could be traded in a way that is honest and fair, a way that empowers both farmers and consumers? The founders asked this question as they envisioned a model that values everyone involved. So they took a risk and dove into changing a broken food system in 1986. It’s been an exciting journey since! Manju Gupta works in Natural Food Sales at Equal Exchange and spends her days convincing people that chocolate bars and coffee are vehicles of social change! Deb Harris, TeamWorx LLC - Deb Harris started her career as a CPA working with a variety of small businesses. After using the Kolbe Concept®, an assessment that identifies people’s unique style, Deb’s focus changed from numbers to people. Deb started TeamWorx LLC in 2002, using her management skills and experience to help business owners tap into the strengths of their most important asset—their people. Her first clients were two of the Fair Trade Federation’s founding members, Damian Jones (Aid Through Trade) and Mac McCoy (dZi). Devin Hibbard, BeadforLife - Co-founder of the poverty-eradicating project BeadforLife, Devin Hibbard works tirelessly to help extremely poor Ugandan women change their own lives. Devin creates partnerships between people living on a dollar a day and world citizens to create a social movement for overcoming extreme poverty. Devin holds a Masters in Public Policy from the Evans School of Public Administration at the University of Washington specializing in international development and non-profit management. She is the author of a guide to international issues, Global Issues & Sustainable Solutions. She is the proud mama of two beautiful boys and splits her time between Colorado and Uganda. Candi Horton, Baksheesh - Candi Horton has been in retail management for 38 years. She worked as Vice-President of Operations for a bookstore franchise in the Midwest before being introduced to fair trade in 1987. Since that time Candi has worked starting and growing fair trade stores across the US and Canada. This included developing and teaching a week-long manager’s training seminar and helping open nine fair trade stores. She has lived in Sonoma since 1997 and is co-owner of Baksheesh, a fair trade gift retailer in St. Helena, CA. Matt Hottell, Director of the IU School of Informatics & Computing Serve IT Clinic - Matt is a Senior Lecturer at the Indiana University School of Informatics and Computing where he teaches the capstone course in information system design and development. He is also the Director of the Indiana University Serve IT Nonprofit Clinic, a unique academic organization that leverages the skills of IU students to address a variety of technical issues for local nonprofits. You can find out more information about Serve IT at http://serveit.soic.indiana.edu Rich Howard-Willms, Plowsharing Crafts - Rich is the Executive Director of Plowsharing Crafts, a not-for-profit fair trade retail outlet consisting of 3 stores in the St. Louis area and an extensive off-site sales program. Plowsharing began in 1985 as a mission of the St. Louis Mennonite Fellowship and Rich has been involved with the program since its beginnings. Rich is married to Peppy, an administrator in the special education field, and they have 2 daughters. The eldest, Rachel, is expecting her first child, and their first grandchild, this May. Their other daughter, Sarah, is a special education teacher. Rich is a Canadian and is obligated by birth to be a big hockey fan. Let’s go, Blues!

Kristin Johnson, Global Mamas - Kristin began working for women entrepreneurs in Ghana nearly 20 years ago as a Peace Corps Volunteer, helping them to grow their businesses and enhance their profitability. After returning to the US, she maintained close relationships with many of the women and began selling their products in the US through informal channels. In 2003, Kristin co-founded Global Mamas, which started with six founding Mamas and today provides sustainable livelihoods to nearly six hundred women. 16

Kim Lamberty, Just Haiti - Kim Lamberty is co-founder and president of Just Haiti, a fair trade coffee development program that partners with associations of subsistence coffee growers in Haiti to improve their yields and connect them with the US market. She also is a manager at Catholic Relief Services in Baltimore, where she works with Catholic organizations across the United States to strengthen their global mission programs. Dr. Lamberty has worked in Haiti, Guatemala, Colombia, the US-Mexico border, Palestine, and the former Soviet Union. She is the author of several articles and a forthcoming book on global mission and development.

Natalia Leal, WFTO - Natalia Leal has served as Chief Executive of the WFTO since July 2013. Before taking on that role, she served as the coordinator of WFTO-Europe. Natalia has been involved with the fair trade movement for several years as a volunteer and academic. Natalia has a PhD in International Relations and a Master’s in Sociology with a focus on globalization. As a professor, she has lectured on subjects including International Organizations & Geopolitics and International Political Economy, and has led trainings on negotiation. She is passionate about fair trade’s potential to make the world a better place.

Meryl Marsh, Canaan Fair Trade - Meryl Marsh, a resident of Traverse City, Michigan is the U.S. Sales Coordinator for Canaan Fair Trade. Before moving to Traverse City in February 2011, she lived in Europe for 2 years and worked on international projects for Michigan based non-profit Archangel Ancient Tree Archive, sharing her time between Michigan and Belgium. Born in Oakland, California and raised in Hartland, Michigan, Marsh attended Western Michigan University earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 2004 with majors in Music and English, focusing on classical piano performance and professional writing. Adele Mattern, Bhavana World Project - Adele Mattern is a socially engaged fashion designer and product developer specializing in international design and business collaborations with artisan producers. She straddles the worlds of business, fashion, and art, endeavoring to create new spaces within conventional business structures for unique collaborations to happen. Adele comes to the social enterprise and fair trade sectors with over fifteen years experience in corporate retail fashion for lifestyle companies such as J.Jill, Sigrid Olsen, L.L. Bean and Putumayo. In the fair trade sector, she has worked with Ten Thousand Villages, WFTO Asia, SERRV, and is a longtime ally of MarketPlace: India. Her collaborative art project with the MarketPlace artisans was published in Hand/Eye Magazine.

Mac McCoy, dZi, Inc. - Mac McCoy is the founder and CEO of dZi Inc., a wholesale importing company celebrating its 24th year; they have been a Fair Trade Federation member since 1994. Mac’s interest in fair trade began in 1986 while running a renewable energy consumer products catalog for an NGO in Washington, DC. He attended fair trade conferences and applied what he learned to the creation of dZi, Inc. dZi , Inc. markets products made by Tibetan refugees in India while educating consumers about Tibetan human rights. They have since diversified their product lines to include bird and nature-themed items. Sean McHugh, Canadian Fair Trade Network - After University, Sean travelled extensively, eventually working in East Africa. After nearly six years of living and working abroad, he returned to Vancouver and joined colleagues in building Fair Trade Vancouver from the ground up. Sean is passionate about creating pathways towards sustainable long term development, both at home and around the world. His current focus now is in connecting and building a strong, unified social movement in Canada emphasizing ethical commerce and consumption. Establishing and growing the Canadian Fair Trade Network has been the primary way to promote these ideals since the Network’s inception in August of 2011. Robert McKinnon, Pure Art Foundation and Pure Art, Inc. - Robert and his wife Brigitte are the co-founders of Pure Art, Inc. and Pure Art Foundation. They share the belief that “art can heal” and have devoted the last five years to building capacity of marginalized people in the Ucayali region of Peru. Profits from items in the Pure Art store support the humanitarian efforts of the Foundation. When not finding meditative time in the art of falconry, he enjoys a passion for photojournalism. Robert lives in Rigaud, Quebec with his wife and five sons.

Kevin Natapow, Creative Retail Solutions - Kevin Natapow is a social entrepreneur with a commitment to helping the fair trade movement grow in the retail sector. He co-founded and ran Momentum, a Boulder based retail store, for seven years. The experience of creating, running and selling his business gave him the inspiration to help other fair trade business owners and social entrepreneurs achieve business success. Kevin is the board chair of Fair Trade Independent Stores, is a father and avid gardener. 18


Michelle Ovalle, Handmade Expressions - Michelle Ovalle, a Texas native, graduated from TX State University – San Marcos with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Design. She has worked with Handmade Expressions as Marketing Associate/Designer since 2011 and was involved in their first in-depth sustainability impact report released in 2013. Michelle traveled to India to meet partner artisan communities in the northern regions of the country. This visit helped form an understanding not only of the traditional art forms in which products are created by, but also the desire for more work from the artisan communities and how product design and marketing can drive this growth. Dr. Anupama Pasricha, St. Catherine University - Dr. Anupama Pasricha is the Department Chair of the Department of Apparel, Merchandising, and Design at St. Catherine University, St. Paul, Minnesota. Her research work is focused on social and environmental responsibility.

Jonathan Rosenthal, Cooperative Coffees and Just Works Consulting - Jonathan Rosenthal has spent over 30 years working to convert the destructive aspects of business into a positive force for people and the environment. In 1985, he co-founded Equal Exchange and was also a founder of the first US fair trade fruit company, Oké USA. Jonathan now consults on fair trade issues and is the Executive Director of Cooperative Coffees. He is an emeritus board member of Root Capital – an informal advisor to many fair trade networks, organizations and companies – and a founding member of Watertown Local First. Jonathan is married to Ora Grodsky; they live near Boston MA with their two daughters.

Marissa Saints, Dsenyo - Marissa Saints is co-founder of Dsenyo, a fair trade wholesaler and online retailer. She has a background in international development and graphic design. Dsenyo works with women and artisans in Africa and Brazil with items sold by retail partners in the USA, Canada and Australia. Marissa runs the daily operations of Dsenyo and does product design for the company. When not immersed in Dsenyo, you’ll find Marissa playing soccer, hanging out with her son, or out on a hike in the Colorado mountains. Rachel Simeon, GrassRoots - Before working at GrassRoots in Anchorage, AK, Rachel worked as an executive in nonprofit settings for over 25 years. She has extensive experience in facilitating groups and has traveled widely throughout the world. She is married to Mark Haines Simeon and they are the proud parents of two grown daughters.

Michael Skillicorn, Deans Beans - Michael Skillicorn works in Farmer Relations at Dean’s Beans Organic Coffee in Orange, MA. He works with farmer cooperatives in Latin America to build strong, equitable trading relationships and promote positive social change. Prior to working at Dean’s Beans, Michael worked at a farmers cooperative in Northern Peru and co-founded a café there. He was educated at the University of Vermont and received an undergraduate degree in Community and International Development. Stacey Toews, Level Ground Trading - Stacey Toews is co-founder of Level Ground Trading, a Direct Fair Trade company based in Victoria, BC for the past 16 years. They employ a staff of 30 who roast and package coffee as well trading in loose teas, organic sugar, dried fruit and growing line of other food products. Level Ground purchases the annual harvest of 5,000 small-scale farming families in 10 countries. Stacey is a dynamic and inspiring speaker who is passionate about social justice. He and his wife, Laurie, have been married 22 years, they parent four children and are busy building a community of animal friends on their hobby farm.

Kevin Ward, Global Crafts - Kevin Ward is co-founder and CEO of Global Crafts. In 1999, when Kevin moved from a computer science teaching position in the UK to volunteer at Kisumu Polytechnic, he began exploring e-commerce opportunities with local artisans. Upon completing his volunteer experience, Kevin came to the USA and launched Global Crafts. Global Crafts has undergone significant shifts over the years from a physical retail store to primarily an online wholesale company. Kevin holds a BA in Sociology and a MSc in Computer Systems from Greenwich University London. Julia Wilber - Julia Wilber is a freelance writer and researcher. Her recent work has focused on fair trade apparel as a Thomas J. Watson Fellow, a SOURCE contributor at the Ethical Fashion Forum, and a research consultant at St. Catherine University.
