A Merry, Merry Christmas

T

his is my favorite time of the year. Moreover, I have to admit my tree was up before Halloween. It’s always something about October that gets me so hyped for Christmas. I’m sorry, but the day after Thanksgiving to New Year is not enough time for me to jam out to Pentatonix, Luther, Babyface, Boys II Men, and Justin Bieber. I need more time y’all! With Christmas, less than 25 days away, I could not be any more excited. However, for some this time of the year is not the happiest time for them. When you’re out and about, remember to spread your holiday cheer wherever you are. The holidays can be stressful and dreadful for some, but being around people who are happy is contagious. Last year around this time my aunt and cousins were in a bad accident, and sadly, we spent Christmas in the hospital. It opened my eyes to the reality that

some people do not have a merry Christmas. We never know what others are going through and we should be mindful of that. My challenge for you is to go out of your way to make someone who is down happy. Try volunteering at a shelter and give your best smile along with a “Happy Holidays.” Hug your loved ones a little longer, give your grandparents a call and sit and talk with them, or give someone you value in your life a nice gift. The fact that we made it to the end of the year should be a blessing in itself. This issue is filled with such great content, and I honestly believe this issue is our best yet. With the beautiful Stephanie Hollman as our cover girl, over 120 pages of content, and a great holiday gift guide where you can click and buy, we have made it extremely difficult for you to put this issue down. I hope this month is full of blessings and that you have a great and safe Christmas and New Year with your family!

FAITH

Starting the New Year with Jesus Article by Rebecca Waldron New Year’s Day is approaching fast. This year has flown by. Have you stopped to reflect on your spiritual life? How much time have you spent in prayer and thanksgiving to the Lord? Well, if you would like to make some changes and don’t know where to begin, let’s discuss starting the New Year with Jesus!

but how much? If you feel that you could do better in spending time with the Lord, then take stock of your daily activities. How much time do you spend on entertainment? Is there a place in the early morning or evening when you can devote time that is usually spent watching Netflix or television to the Lord instead?

A New Leaf Throughout the past year I’m sure that you have taken time to be with the Lord,

Try making a scheduled time for prayer and reflection. Take stock of your sins and temptations. Ask Christ to help you

with these. The Lord is mercy. It’s His biggest quality because mercy is love, and God is love. If you have a particular temptation that always seems to get the best of you, prayerfully go to God with these troubles. Aim to turn over a new leaf during the New Year and make your resolution to spend more time delving into prayer and reflection. God forgives and wants you to return to Him just like the Prodigal Son.

as near as your breath. You are never alone. Take a new look at the Bible as God’s love letter to you. Even when the Israelites messed up, they were forgiven when they repented. God shows His never-ending mercy to all of His people.

“The son said to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. But the father said to his servants, Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found. So they began to celebrate.” Luke 15: 21-24. NIV.

Church The Lord wants us to have fellowship with our brothers and sisters in Christ. The reason for this is that He wants us to have a good association that will lift us up rather than brings us down. This, again, goes back to God’s mercy. If you are not in a Church family, find one that you are comfortable with. It doesn’t matter what denomination as long as they are worshipping God and believe that Jesus is the Savior of mankind. There’s plenty to choose from. If you are already a member of a Church think about why you haven’t

Word Up Another way you can start the New Year with Jesus is to read the Bible. If you read about three to five chapters a day, you can finish the entire Bible in one year! Finishing the Bible is an excellent resolution for the New Year. If you don’t read the Bible, you won’t understand what God expects of you, and you won’t truly understand His great love and mercy. Everything that is in the Bible is true. God’s compassion for his sons and daughters is shown in the whole story of the Israelites and the Gospels. He gave us the ultimate sacrifice of His Son so that the gap between us would be remedied. The love of the Father will not be cemented in your heart until you understand who God is. Once you realize that God is the same yesterday, today, and forever then the gravity of His love can sink in. Imagine having a perfect friend and confidant that loves you unconditionally. He loves you so much that He wrote it all down so you would never feel alone. There is no difference between God and His Word. God is in your heart when you read it. He is

been going as much as you could. If you do go every weekend, why not join a small group or Bible study to get to know your brothers and sisters truly? It is a joy to be around those of the faith, especially when times get tough. They are there to lift you up and pray for you. Step up your faith-filled activities this New Year. “And let us not give up meeting together. Some are in the habit of doing this. Instead, let us encourage one another with words of hope. Let us do this even more as you see Christ’s return approaching.” Hebrews 10:25 NIRV A New Year with Jesus If you take these simple steps to create a more spiritual New Year with Jesus, you will find that your love of the Father grows by leaps and bounds. You will also find that you become blessed by God as you draw close to Him. God is Mercy and Love. Get to know Him better in the upcoming year and make 2018 the year that your spirit soars! ■

FAITH

Sharing Your Faith with Non-Believers Article by Zareth Rodriguez

Christmas is a time of joy, faith, hope, and relationships. One of the most significant relationships during Christmas is that with our Savior, Jesus Christ. How do we share our faith during Christmas with non-believers? Real Love Sometimes we want to over-spiritualize how we speak to non-believers. Often a simple gesture or word goes beyond what you thought would be appropriate. When Jesus was with his disciples, he clearly stated a new commandment to Love one another. (John 13:34-35)

14 // Deliberate Magazine

The first thing people notice is how you act and how you treat people. See our first approach would always be your actions and how you handle yourself when you think no one is looking. Our neighbors and coworkers will be easier to approach if you have shown them compassion, kindness and that you live what you believe. When it comes to strangers and people we randomly meet and are non-believers is also important but always approach them with love. I do not understand where people get the idea that screaming

at non-believers that they will be going to hell is a good method. Jesus never approached a person that was lost in that matter. We need to remember that Jesus died for all. Every one was worth dying for. If we would approach people like we would want to be approach things will be a little different. Sharing your faith is sharing in the goodness of serving a God that is present, and that literally gave us a new life. Sharing your faith should never be about the judgment. God wants to share his love; He loved us so much that He gave His Son.

FAITH

That should be the main approach towards non-believers. God is love (1 John 4:8). No one can imitate the reckless and unconditional love God has for us. You are not a Savior I have seen people try so hard to get people to say the prayer of salvation and it breaks my heart. That is not what salvation is all about. It is not about getting someone just to say the words to get you to leave them alone. It is so much more than that. Our focus should be on sharing that Gospel. The one who saves is Jesus, not us. We are blessed to be chosen to share the great things God has done for us and to testify of His goodness in our lives. How He has transformed you and how He accepted you when you were in the same place they are right now. When we understand our place and that we cannot force people, but we can let them know who God is and what He has done for us, but never pushing or forcing God on them. God is not like that. He does not force you to do things; He gave us free will. What you can do with

people is pray for them, after sharing God’s love and what He has done. Lift them up in prayer and pray that the words you spoke to them start making a change on the inside. Pray for whatever is holding them from giving their life to Christ to be released. I was so scared of sharing my faith in the beginning because I saw all of these evangelists gain lives for Christ and so on fire for God that it intimidated me! It left me scared that I would say the wrong thing or that I failed because the person did not want to say the salvation prayer with me. One thing I started learning the more I studied and read the Word was that I have a part to do. As long as I did my part and was obedient to God, He will take care of the rest. Maybe your job was to plant a seed, and another person will have the job to water what you planted in that person. As small as it seems to you it might just be exactly what was needed. Another great way to share your faith with a non-believer is to invite them to events at the church. Plays and musical events

are a great opportunity to share your faith. I will also encourage you to invite them to dinners or get-togethers that are Christian based. That will open the door for them to see a different atmosphere. The most important thing I can say is to be yourself. God created you in a unique way, and you are His creation, don’t be afraid to boast about the God you serve and how wonderful He has been to you. I encourage you to try and share your faith with people this Christmas. Don’t be afraid to ask the Holy Spirit to guide you and lead you. Before you share your faith, ask God to show you how to give you the exact words to say and when to say them. Discernment is key. I challenge you to pray, and I guarantee that God will show you the people and what to say. God wants to be talked about and introduced to people that don’t know Him. He died for all of us. Share your faith and let the love of God fill you so you can share it with someone this Christmas. ■

Learning to Push Through When You Want to Give Up Article by April Audett

FAITH

e have all been to the point where we want to give up in our current trial and not move on. I have reached a point where life seems like it will never get better and I will always be stuck in the muck that I have fallen into. The world seems to swallow you up, and you cannot find a way out of the darkness. So how do you push through even when life seems impossible? How do you hold on to a sliver of hope when hope does not seem like enough to get you through? Does that sound like you? What I am about to say may seem ridiculous, but it is true. You need to be excited about the trials that come into your life. I know, you are probably re-reading that statement and saying to yourself, “this girl is crazy. How can anyone be happy about hard times in your life”? Alternatively, maybe you are saying to yourself, “she does not know what I have been through or am going through.” I do not know your story, and I do not know what trials you are facing at the moment; but I do know one thing, I have been through a lot. I look back at my trials and thank the Lord for not only letting me walk through my painful path of life but for also being right by my side the whole time. James 1:2-4 says, “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” ESV. Trials help shape us to be stronger. However, they cannot do that unless you look at your current trial as joy and let the trial work through your life. Why look at the trial as a negative in your life and why dwell on it? Romans 8:18 says, “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.” ESV. That is very true. We are living in a very broken

world. A world where hurt and pain is inevitable. However, does it really matter in the end? Once this world has passed, we will be in a much better place. A place where there will be no more suffering. If we keep our eyes on that goal, those trials are going to seem like a minute issue. A favorite verse of mine, to remember in times of trouble, is Joshua 1:9, “Be strong and courageous, do not be terrified, do not be discouraged. For the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” I love this verse because it reminds me that I need to be strong. Without strength, my trials cannot be a testimony to others. Have you ever seen the movie, Facing the Giants? If you have not seen it yet, I definitely recommend it. There is a scene in that movie that re-

ber is, you are not alone in what you are going through. Not only are there other people who have gone through or are going through what you are going through now, but there is one important individual who has been by your side, is by your side and will always be by your side. I will give you a hint; He is bigger than any suffering we may encounter. Got it yet? Yes, it is God. 2 Timothy 4:17 says, “But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So, I was rescued from the Loin’s mouth.” ESV. God will NEVER leave your side. You may get to the end of this and think, “I made it through because I am strong” but the truth is, God gave you the strength and stood there next to you when you felt like you could not stand any longer. Isn’t that an amazing thought? All those trials I endured, when I felt like I could not make it and couldn’t go any further, God was the one who held me up and gave me the strength to make it one more day. So that leads me to my last thought for this article. I know that it is easier to say these things than actually do. People who are on the outside of your trial, looking in, will probably tell you these things. They will tell you to be strong, rely on God, just hold on one more day. However, at the moment, it is easier to say those things that often do them. That is why, when you think you cannot go on and are out of strength, lean on God. In Matthew 11:28, God says, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and My burden is light”. ESV I know that there will be days where it will feel impossible to continue in life, but you have got to do your very best and keep going. Also, when you do not think you can make it any further, lean on God and ask Him for the strength. He will never let you walk alone through a trial. ■

Without strength, my trials cannot be a testimony to others. minds me of the kind of strength that God wants us to have. In the scene, a football player is asked to do the death crawl blindfolded. For those of you who don’t know, the death crawl is where you are on your hands and feet crawling across the football field while carrying someone on your shoulders. The coach asks him to go to the 50yard line. When asked to do the death crawl blindfolded, he is asked to give his all and not give up no matter how tired he gets. While crawling, he goes past the 50-yard line and becomes weak. He tells his coach that he is “about out of strength” and isn’t sure if he can make it. His coach reminds him over and over to “keep going” and not to quit. In the end, he has made it to the opposite side of the field. Just like that football player, God wants us to keep going. No matter how hard it is, no matter how much strength we may think we have left, we need to keep going and don’t give up. God will not let us endure something that we cannot endure. The next thing I want you to remem-

FAITH

The Cure to Loneliness Article by Rachel Sammons I know exactly how you feel. No seriously, I really do. Maybe you have graduated from college. Perhaps you have moved to a new home. Maybe you were like me and went to college in England only to leave all your English friends behind and return to the States after graduation. Not only the States but rural Massachusetts where none of your high school friends live. I get it. I know what it is like to feel deeply, impossibly lonely. Loneliness is a growing epidemic in adults. Our time has been called “the age of loneliness.” It is estimated that one in five Americans suffers.

Additionally, a handful of millennials are like me: radically displaced from their social networks. It is a stifling contrast to college life where total immersion in the student body gives you this feeling that is something like “The Opposite of Loneliness,” as the late Marina Keegan coined it in her iconic essay. She writes: “It’s not quite love and it’s not quite community; it’s just this feeling that there are people, an abundance of people, who are in this together.…We won’t have those next year. We won’t live on the same block as all our friends. We won’t have a bunch of grouptexts.”

It is unavoidable. Transitioning to your next chapter in life can throw you out of your comfort zone and make you feel completely isolated. I know many of my friends who felt utterly alone in the year following college graduation. While there are benefits to being on your own—independence, stronger sense of self, more time to read the Bible and pray—loneliness can cause depression, higher stress levels, antisocial behavior, cardiovascular disease, and even the progression of Alzheimer’s. At the same time, there seems to be obvious ways to combat loneliness. Besides the ease of social

FAITH

media, there are volunteer opportunities, church activities, community events—there’s even an app for meeting people called Meetup. However, the fact that our generation still struggles proves that loneliness treads much more in-depth than simply a need for human interaction. The path out of solitude does not end with optimal social health. It is a journey of the mind and requires a significant reworking of your thought processes.

More & More People are not the Solution For me, I went from the collegiate social life in an urban English town to the frightful grad life in rural Massachusetts. My friends were either across the pond or in Chicago where I grew up. I ate pop-tarts every morning and scrolled through LinkedIn jobs. Sure, I had my family, and for that, I am grateful. However, I also profoundly missed England and my friends. I had yet to get my driver’s license which meant I was quite literally a passenger in my own life. Loneliness is wrapped up in the feeling of having no sense of control. You struggle to shape your environment and your social sphere to suit you and your rhythm of living. Empowerment, I would argue, could constitute as the opposite of loneliness. So, when I was in Massachusetts, I got out and met people. I worked as a freelance journalist for the local magazine, and that miraculously led me to have lunch with an English woman that I met. She served me proper English tea and biscuits, and we talked about cultural differences, the expat life, but mostly, loneliness. “I’ve been here for six years,” she said, “and I’d say I have two close friends whom I could call in the middle of the night if I needed them.”

20 // Deliberate Magazine

I stared in wide-eyed horror. Is that how long it takes to make friends in the adult world? However, toward the end of my time in Massachusetts—six months in total—I started to see the budding growth of a social life. My church began to organize events for twentysomethings. I kept meeting people who were in the same boat as I was, feeling displaced and were open to meet for a coffee or a meal. However, my loneliness did not recede as I made more and more connections. I still felt out of place and disoriented. I craved a lot of friends but what I really needed was what the English woman had: a steady friend. The first part of the cure to loneliness is not necessarily having people, even friends, in your immediate presence. It is having them in your life, as if at your disposal. That way, in moments of intense loneliness or insecurity, you have the option of contacting a person. However, you could also very easily not contact them. The choice is yours—and there you rediscover your sense of control in life. When you do not have this setup, the best way to manage your loneliness is to acknowledge how, above all, God is in control.

Patience for the Control Freak Of course, you have to be proactive in pursuing relationships with people, even more so when you are out of college. However, placing the fate of your social health into your own hands is a lot of responsibility and can lead you down a rabbit-hole of stress. While you should reach out to new people and extend invitations, the backdrop should also involve prayer and patience. In Massachusetts, I prayed to get friends—to get that close, meaningful Scooby Gang. Six months

later, I relocated for a job in suburban Orlando where, during my first month in town, I assimilated into a group of young people like me. I called it friendship at first sight. It was a 180-degree turn. Trusting in God, and His comfort is the second part of the cure to loneliness. It is the kind of peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7). When you are in a new environment, when you are breaching new terrain, when you have gone far beyond your comfort zone, trust that God sets the lonely in families (Psalm 68:6). Trust that He hears your prayers. While His answers might not be what you want, still believe that it is all part of His plan. I never did recreate a strong network of friends in Massachusetts, but here I am sharing my experience of loneliness to you in hopes that I can offer encouragement and insight. In an article on Christianity Today entitled “It’s Inevitable: We’re Human, We’re Christian, and We’re Lonely,” Enuma Okoro writes:

“As Christians, we’re called to train one another in the theological virtue of caritas, as understood by Thomas Aquinas as friendship with God that ultimately leads to deepened friendship with one another. In that space, we learn to cultivate more genuine depths of safe intimacy with one another not merely for our own sakes but for the sake of the one who first called us friends and never sent his disciples out alone.” For me, this is the cure to loneliness: steady, genuine friends and a steady, genuine relationship with God. The two are not mutually exclusive. ■

Why Going Through a Tribulation is a Good Thing Article by April Audett Our world is full of horrible times and times of struggle. There is nothing worse than watching as the world suffers. It is even harder when you are the one going through the trial or tribulation. Whether it is those around you who are hurting or you yourself, tribulations can be one of the hardest things we can go through. Sometimes it seems like they will never end and sometimes it feels like there isn’t anything good that can come out of such a horrible time. So how do we go through a tribulation and come out better on the other side? In John 16:33, Jesus tells us, “I have said these things to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world, you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world” ESV. We cannot avoid tribulations. Hard times will come and Jesus wants us to know that. Don’t be surprised when hard times come. God knows that we will

22 // Deliberate Magazine

face hard times and He wants us to remember that in those hard times, He is bigger and stronger. The first thing to remember is that hard times will come but there is one thing we should always do when facing a tribulation and that is to have joy. Tribulations are a good thing and I know that may sound silly and not make any sense but it is true. In James 1:2-3 we are told, “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing” ESV. We may be tested in our trials but “the testing of our faith produces steadfastness”. To understand this more, we need to look at the definition of what it means to be steadfast. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the definition of steadfast is “firm in belief,

determination, or adherence”. So, if trials make us firm in our beliefs, shouldn’t we be overjoyed to face trials? What a wonderful gift that comes from such a horrible time in your life. While enduring pain and sadness, we can have a stronger faith in the end. There are things we can do, however, to make it through a trial. 1. Have patience. It takes time to go through a hard time. Things don’t quickly get fixed. Hard times take time to get better. You’ve heard the saying that it will get worse before it gets better? Well that is true. Before things can get better sometimes they have to get worse and that takes time. So, during that time of pain or sadness, be patient. Remember that in the end, your faith will come out stronger. Romans 12:12 says, “Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer” ESV

FAITH

During this time of patience, read your bible and grow closer to God. That is a very important way to grow stronger during a time of trial. You will not only grow closer to God by reading His word, but you will read words of wisdom to help calm and restore your heart during your tribulation. 2. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” ESV. Even in the hard times, there is good all around us. God hasn’t left us with nothing. For myself, going through a tribulation, I need to remember to be thankful for what I have. I am blessed with a wonderful husband who loves me, a beautiful daughter who is healthy and growing, a roof over my head, food on my table and even a full-time job in my life. No matter what is happening, I know that I always have those things. 3. We need to remember that God is by our side as well. He has not abandoned us just because we are going through a trial. Isaiah 41:10 says, “fear not for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am

your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand” ESV. Even in the darkest of times, God is by our side. God specifically says in this verse that He will strengthen us, help us and uphold us with His hand. When we feel like we cannot go any further, we need to remember this promise. Psalm 46:1-3 says, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart pf the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling”. Even if the earth stops moving, He is our refuge and strength. No matter what happens we should not be scared. The one thing I always have to remind myself, is that God will not let us go through anything we cannot handle. There may be times where we feel like we can’t do what is in front of us; like we cannot endure the trials of our current situation. However, when I feel like I cannot go on, God is the one carrying me through. And in that very reason we need to do what Prov-

erbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths” ESV. 4. The last thing we need to do in the middle of a trial is do everything for God. Colossians 3:23-24 says, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ” ESV. We are always serving the Lord and in doing so, we need to work through the trial for the Lord. If you feel like you cannot make it to work, go to work for God. If you feel like you cannot get out of bed, get out of bed for God. Everything we do should be in serving Him. I know these things are easier said than done, but remember to take it one day at a time. The last thought I want to leave you with is a quote by J.C. Ryle that says, “Trials are intended to make us think, to wean us from the world, to send us to the Bible, to drive us to our knees”. ■

Why Non-Regular Church Goers Go to Church on Christmas

Ar ti c l e by Sher a l yn Wo o d l ey

FAITH

C

hristmas is the time when friends and family come together to celebrate the birth of Christ. During this time people of all ethnicities, races, religions, and denominations pause to recognize His birth. Many traditions and customs are surrounding the Christmas holiday. Some of the traditions are dependent and specific to ethnicity, race, religion, denomination and even age. However, there is one tradition that many will follow, just because of it being Christmas - going to church. Some people may go on Christmas Eve and others on Christmas Day but one thing is for sure they will make one of the services.

Increased Attendance

Because of the tradition of going to church on Christmas Day, most churches see an increase in attendance. Buy why? Non-Regular attendees will actually make an effort to stop what they are doing or where they are to go to a physical building for a period of time during Christmas. Are non-regular church attendees only going because of tradition?

Why Go to Church

Most Non-Regular church attendees usually attend church less than ten times a year (Christmas, Mother’s Day, Easter, weddings, or funerals). Christmas is a favorite holiday. During this Christmas season, some people will go to church because churches have major Christmas productions/plays and it is great family entertainment and a time for the whole family to be to-

gether. Others will go because of the special guests that will be at the church. There are even those that go because it is a somewhat safe time and environment because you can get lost in the vast crowd. Some of these individuals are trying to decide to start or restart going to church. Some are going to see their children or loved ones say speeches, sing or perform. There are even those that believe if they do not go to church during the Christmas holidays something terrible will happen to them.

Jesus is the Reason

Whatever the reason for the attendance, churches prepare for the increased attendance. Every life that comes through their door is important. Most people are so busy and focused on everything except Jesus Christ during the holiday season. Churches take this opportunity to show and tell all that Jesus was born so that they can receive the gift of salvation. Therefore, because the attendees are so diverse, the churches methods to reach the many non-regular church attendees this Christmas holiday has to be also impactful and direct. During this time everyone is more receptive and willing to hear that “Jesus is the Reason for the Season.” Seize the moment!

During this time everyone is more receptive and willing to hear that “Jesus is the Reason for the Season.”

“He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest... and of his kingdom, there shall be no end.” (Luke 1:32-22)

Your Guide to a Stress-Free Holiday Article by Sherisse’ Woodley

Winter 2017 // 27

LIVING

The holidays are stressful; there is no way to deny it. We go from store to store, house to house, and sometimes city-to-city to be with the people we love. Many times, we keep hustling and bustling that it puts more stress on us that is needed. I believe very few people understand that everything needs to be perfect. As I am writing this article weeks before the publish date I am currently mini stressing about the holidays. Here are a few things you need to do to have a less stressful holiday and keep your holiday cheer bright and burning.

Make a List You can skip this step, but it will only make your situation more stressful. Grab some coffee or wine and start making a list. To simplify this list, start with the main things that need to be done: Christmas shopping, Christmas parties, Christmas dinner, holiday cards, travel plans, etc. Then begin adding the list of people that need presents, what parties you’re going to and if you’re hosting one, what food are you going to make for Christmas dinner, and who to send holiday cards to. If you’re leaving town for the holidays, is your ticket bought, have you made house arrangements to make sure your house is safe? This allows you to break up the main tasks into sections so you can tackle them one at a time.

Budget Making a list is all fun and games until you realize you do not have enough money to accomplish everything on your list. Set a number that you want to spend and stick to that budget. Some things may need to be bumped off your list, but it’s best not over to spend and suffer the consequences after. Budget, budget, budget, and stay on it.

28 // Deliberate Magazine

Make a Schedule Now that your list is done and you now know how much you can spend it’s time to put a deadline for each task. When do you need to get all your presents bought so that you have enough time to wrap them and give it to the correct person before Christmas? What RSVPs do you need to send to parties that you are attending? Do you need to gather RSVPs for your party? When do you need to get the ingredients for Christmas dinner? It is always best to buy the dry ingredients first and the turkey or chicken if it is frozen. When do you need to mail out holidays cards? Have you packed everything you need for your trip? Making a month-long schedule of when things need to be done help you keep focused on what needs to be done. It’s best to add these tasks to an electronic calendar, so you also get notifications when deadlines are coming up. It’s so easy to let things slip, but the beauty of technology is that it doesn’t have to be a distraction. So, make sure to add important dates and tasks to your calendar.

Do What You Need to Do When You Need to Do It Do not ignore your reminder when it tells you to go out and buy the turkey or send RSVPs. You made the schedule for a reason and its purpose is useless if you put off what needs to be done when you get notified. There may be times when you get off schedule but getting back on schedule as soon as possible is important. This schedule is in place, so you’re not rushing to get everything done last minute. The holidays don’t have to be stressful. They can be a great time of the year where you dot your “i”s and cross your “t”s. Here is a timeline list you can follow we got from Real Simple.

A Hostess Guide to Hosting a Holiday Dinner Party Article by Zareth Rodriguez Holidays are here and are a great time to host the most memorable dinner party on the block! I always pride myself on hosting dinner parties. I want to share a guide with you that will make your dinner parties not only be memorable but also be one that leaves people wanting more and immediately agreeing to accept your invitation next time. 1. Prepare You have probably heard this term a lot. However, event planners and successful people never tend to do things on a whim. Preparation is part of being an excellent hostess. It all starts with deciding what type of dinner you want to have. How formal is it going to be? In what area of your home you will be hosting the party? Do you need to rent any chairs or tables? Do you have a budget for this dinner party? All these questions should be considered before even thinking of inviting guests over. Another vital aspect to consider is the activities already in place for the season. Be mindful of significant events that way you do not have an empty dinner party. 2. Decorations Setting the atmosphere is key and the secret to being

30 // Deliberate Magazine

a good hostess. You want to make sure that whatever dinner party you are hosting has a special touch. Attention to detail is important. Everything counts. Having a clean and tastefully decorated space will set the atmosphere for a successful dinner party. Our houses are decorated for the Holidays so, make sure that everything is already set up and that your decorations outside match the inside of your house as well. 3. Organization I am a firm believer that dinner parties should have some organization. If you have people arriving at six, make sure that you already have some drinks and appetizers ready for them. If there are gifts being exchanged, make sure there is an area designated for that. If you have guests that have never been to your home, be ready to show them around. Whatever you do have a schedule and be flexible. Have a guide, so the dinner party never dies down until it is time to leave. To keep the conversation going have a table set up with questions and create games while waiting for other guests to arrive or for the food to be served.

LIVING

4. Theme Holiday dinner parties do not have to be boring. I am confident your guest will enjoy a themed dinner party! It will be something different and fun. You can choose a classic holiday movie and have that be the theme of the dinner party. You can even make it a dressed-up party. For example, you can choose the theme of a Christmas Carol movie. You can even have food with the names of the characters or have guests dressed up as a Scrooge, Tiny Tim or the Ghost of Christmas past. You can place quotes on the table from the movie or even play a game asking questions regarding the movie. Part of being a good hostess is to think outside of the box. Don’t be afraid to be different. There are probably a lot of dinner parties that are traditional during this

season, but there is nothing wrong with something different. 5. Food The food will make your dinner party a success. Spend time and prepare a good menu that will flow and satisfy your guests. Be sure to know of any food allergies beforehand. Make your guests feel considered, and it will also prevent any allergic reactions. Cook what you know. Don’t try too hard and try complicated recipes because you want to impress. This is the part that people speak about after they leave your home. The food was amazing is what you want to hear. When people like the food there will not be that many leftovers!

gifts. If you decide to have a gift exchange or play the white elephant game, I suggest having a little party favor for your guests. I know it is not a wedding but is your dinner party! It does not have to be anything extravagant but some baked cookies, some candy, candles, ornaments, or a thank you card. Be sure that is something unique and impactful that will make your guests feel special. Part of being a good hostess is being present at your dinner party and not hiding in the back. Enjoy your hard work and planning. Be sure to take pictures and document how wonderful it all looked. You can even frame the pictures taken and give them as Christmas gifts! ■

Saving Money on Gifts by Couponing Article by Zareth Rodriguez

able to utilize it because it did not work in that particular store. Talk about being bummed! The counterpart of this is that if the employee is saying you cannot use that coupon and you are already aware of the store policy, it will be easier for you to explain to the employee or get a manager.

Patience is a Virtue

Christmas could be a very stressful time for some people. When we really think about it, gifts are kind of important nowadays, and no one will have a Christmas party without the famous white elephant or gift exchange scenario. This year I challenged myself and really decided to do something different. I researched and thought that maybe if I used some coupons, I could at least save some money.

Prepare

The thing about successful couponing is that it requires preparation. You

34 // Deliberate Magazine

cannot just go on a whim. You need to know the things that you are buying so you can find the right deals. Prepare in advance. I would say for the holiday season to start preparing before Thanksgiving if it cannot be done do not despair! Just write the list and be assured of what you are looking for.

Remember to be patient. Stores can be packed during holiday season, employees are sometimes overworked and let’s face it, couponing can take a little more time than the normal transaction. Brace yourself before leaving home. Pack snacks and dress yourself with love, peace, and patience. Be nice. Nice people get further in achieving what they want or need.

are many out there, and each one is different. These are more general and have good information for those who are just starting to use of coupons.

Krazy Coupon Lady

I have a love and hate relationship with this app. It really has tons of information, and it is always notifying you of deals! This is the part that I hate the most because there is always something I did not plan to buy, but it is on sale and to top it off there is a coupon for it! That right there might be the only problem. Other than that, is a great app. The developers try the deals before you try them. If you are new to couponing, they have tutorials that will help you and guide you through the process. You have the option of choosing your favorite stores, and you also can make a list of items and match it with coupons or deals. This will be my first choice to have when Christmas shopping. I will encourage you to download it and give it a try. The best part is that you have offers and deals that have already been tried by other people and they explain exactly how to do it.

Ebates

Now, this app is amazing, but it does not usually work the way you think it does. The reason why I am placing this app here is that it could be extra income for you for next Christmas. The way it works is that you enter your payment information and every time you go shopping in-store or online. It will provide you cash back for every

dollar spent at that store. You accumulate that cashback and get paid with a check or PayPal. The benefit of this app is that you are not spending anything additional and you are just going to the same store you have planned, and you use your coupons or by items on sale and automatically receive money. Some people are skeptical about this. But it works! You just have to remember to use them every time you go to the store.

Online

At the end of the day, if I can save ten dollars on my shopping and get some cash back at the same time, I believe it makes me win! Not only that but is also a positive spin on all the gifts. I know it might seem like it takes a lot of work but if you push on you will never feel stressed about gifts again. The other option is all the online deals you get during the holiday season. It is important to know when deals are going to come. These apps will help with that and will notify you of any flash sales available. Another thing you can do is to be on the lookout for the shopper’s app called RetailMeNot. If you are still a little skeptical about this I want to share a deal out of using all this. I love the store, Charming Charlie. It is an accessory store, and I was planning to buy a few presents from there. I found coupons that gave me a discount for $20 after buying $50 or another coupon was a discount of $10 after buying $30. They have cute, simple gifts under $10. Necklaces, bath bombs, stationary, socks and compact mirrors. I bought five different necklaces at $10 each that was $50 + tax since I get a $20 discount I only paid $36 for my gifts. Leaving me with a saving of $14 to add to another gift. Alternatively, if you did not plan for the wrapping, you can go to Dollar Tree and get some inexpensive bags as well. Don’t be afraid to bargain shop! It is the smart way to shop for Christmas this year. You might even save some money and get some extra to treat yourself ! ■

How would you describe your fashion? I love lots of colors and unique designs. I try to stay away from typical trends and go for things that catch my eye rather than fit in with everyone else. Right now, I love fun sleeves and asymmetrical design tops. I am also all about comfort because, without fail, it seems like anytime I am filming a fancy lunch for the show, I always end up running against the clock and go straight to carpool then soccer practice without time to change, so I have to be ready

for anything‌even while in heels! What are some of your favorite stores you like to shop at? I really love Intermix because I feel like their designs are unique and constantly changing, so you kind of know you will not see someone else wearing what you bought, but living in Dallas, I have to love Neiman Marcus! Neiman’s and Nordstrom are my #1 go-to spots! How has your fashion evolved over the years? Season one of Real Housewives, I did not know what we were filming or what the show was going to be called, so I did not really pay much attention to what I was wearing, and now looking back

What are some trends you loved and hate? Velvet was a trend that I never jumped on board with, but I am obsessed with bell sleeves, and if you take a quick browse through my Instagram, you have probably noticed that! When it comes to trendy pieces, I usually try to stay under the $150 price point, but timeless pieces are always a splurge! You wear many hats; mother, philanthropist, fashionista, and you are on the RHOD. What does a typical day look like for you? My day usually starts at 6:30 am when I wake the boys up for school and make them breakfast. After that, I take the boys to their schools, usually rush home to get my hair and makeup camera ready, then head off to wherever we are filming that day. It is a pretty jam-packed day, but I love the time I get to spend with the boys in the car in the morning; I would not trade that for the world! How do you keep your work and personal life balanced? What are some tips you would give to other working women out there?

COVER STORY

w i th

Stephanie Hollman I think it is all about boundaries! For me, spending time with my boys whether it be picking them up or dropping them off at school is important quality time for me, that I will not give up. The production crew knows how important that is to me, so I only film either while they are in school, or after I pick them up. Being a mom is my favorite job, and I will not give that up for anything! It is all about finding a balance and knowing where to draw the line. You wrote a blog post “My Journey to Finding Me.” How was your life changed now that you are learning every single day to value yourself just as much as you would value someone you love? I am more confident in myself and the decisions that I make. I hope you can see that change a little bit as this season progresses. When I have an issue, I will face it head on, and stand up for myself. No one deserves to be walked on, or treated poorly and I do not accept that behavior. Everyone should be treated

with kindness and respect. That is the message that I hope to share. You are big on giving back. Why did you choose the charities you participate in? I love to focus on women and children’s issues because before I met Travis, I was in the social service field, so when I moved to Dallas, I felt like continuing my work with women and children, it just felt natural. You are on the Real Housewives of Dallas. How have you used that outlet to bring awareness to the causes you care about? Travis and I are both huge advocates of Big Brothers Big Sisters and The Family Place, a domestic violence agency in Dallas. I feel as though it would be irresponsible of me not to use this outlet to bring awareness to both of these incredible organizations. I was a social worker for many years, so I know that exposure is key to running a successful organization.

Interview by Sherisse’ Woodley You are a mother of two beautiful boys. What are some ways you want to be a role model to them? If they watch this show years and years from now, I want them to see that I practice what I preach by being kind, genuine, humble and honest! What advice would you give to someone who is struggling with past pain and recognizing their true value? As long as you know who you are and you hold true to your core values, then everyone else’s opinions are just opinions and carry no weight in your true value. What would you say your motto is and why? Focus on what you love and your family. Everything else in life will just fall into place. What is your favorite childhood Christmas memory? My favorite Christmas memory as a child was getting together with my entire

family at my grandparent’s house. We would eat dinner; I would play with my cousins and get to open presents before heading home to get in bed before Santa came down our chimney later that night! What are some traditions you do with your family? Every year on December 1st, our little friend Elf on the Shelf drops his bags and pays us a visit for a month. The boys have so much fun running around every morning to see what mischief he got into the night before, and it is the cutest thing to watch! What does Christmas mean to you? When you are younger, Christmas is about getting presents, but as a mom, it is all about making memories with my boys. I love watching the boys enjoy the holiday festivities, spending time with family and enjoying all of the gorgeous Christmas decors! ■

PROFILE

Did you always want to be a life coach or someone who helps others be their best version of themselves? If not, what made you change your career goal? I think I have been a life coach since I was little, but didn’t know it. I have always loved helping people and was told I was wise from a very young age. Even when I was an actress, I would help my fellow actors with their problems. When I decided actually to become a certified life coach, it seemed so natural for me, as if I had been doing it forever. Why is meditation such a hit with celebrities? Why should people practice it? I think meditation is a hit with celebrities and high-profile people because it reduces the stress caused by the demands and expectations of their careers. Meditation allows you to turn off the noise and busyness of your life, and be with yourself peacefully. You do not have to do anything or be anyone you do not want to be. You can be your most real and authentic self with acceptance and non-judgment, which supports your well-being and overall happiness. What are the benefits of adopting a mindfulness lifestyle? There are so many benefits to adopting a mindfulness lifestyle. First off, when you live your life with mindfulness as your guide, you are so much more present and alive. You feel like all of your senses are functioning at their optimum, and everything you do feels like a heightened and more enriching experience. Your relationships are more enjoyable and satisfying because you feel so much more appreciative of the people in your life, and you are less inclined to take them for granted. Mindfulness also enhances your creativity because you are receptive and open to allowing ideas to flow naturally without any distractions. When you adopt mindfulness as a way to live your life, you wake up each day in gratitude of “what is” rather than lamenting the past, which has come and gone or feeling anxious about the future, which is not here yet. Mindfulness reminds you that there is no greater moment than the one you are in right now.

How can one who juggles a busy schedule fit meditation into their lives? Mindfulness is the very thing that can help you juggle a busy schedule by keeping you more present at the moment with attentiveness and concentration. Often, when we are busy, we tend to be overwhelmed by all the things we are doing, or need to get done, that our performance can be less than 100% because our attention can be split between what we are doing, and what we still have to do. Mindfulness will always keep you at the moment with total awareness, and help you approach everything you do with more calmness and less reactivity. What are some of the issues or trends you see arise the most during the holiday season? The holidays are definitely a time when people can experience more stress and anxiety. It tends to make people feel they either have to fulfill something for others by gifting or that they are more in need of being given to. I think people are much more vulnerable during the holidays because it is nearing towards the end of another year, and that is when we usually reflect on what we have or what we have accomplished. It is also a time to be with family and loved ones to celebrate the joy of the holidays, and not everyone has that available to them in their lives, which can be sad and lonely How can others be mindful during the hustle and bustle of the holiday seasons? One of the ways you can be more mindful during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season is to begin your day telling yourself to be present in all that you do. That means that before you leave the house, you are setting the tone for how you want things to go. You are taking control of the busyness and hurriedness, and if, or when you start to feel the effect of the hustle and bustle, you catch it before it turns into anxiety or frustration. By doing something as easy as taking a few deep breaths in and out, it can immediately center you and calm your nerves. Also, having a warm cup of tea, or sitting quietly for ten minutes with your eyes closed, or in a meditation practice, can allow for a stress-free holiday season.

Can you tell us a little more about your “Says Who” method? The method is a unique, original technique I have created for transforming negative and fear-based thoughts. We think between 40-70,000 thoughts a day, and many of those thoughts do not serve our well-being. By asking yourself seven straightforward, and what I call “user-friendly” questions, you can challenge any thought you have that does not support you in the best way possible, and immediately change it to one that does. I say in Says Who? that “you are the creator and master of your internal dialogue, which creates your reality.” By using the Says Who? Method consistently, you will see extraordinary, positive results in your life! You are also active in various philanthropic organizations. Can you tell us a little more about the organizations you are a part of and why? I am on the board of trustees of New Roads School, which is a private school in Los Angeles. My family became members of the New Roads community when my older son was enrolled as a junior in high school. We were so impressed with New Roads’ philosophy of supporting students of diversity, and their unique, progressive education that we were thrilled to have our younger son attend the school too. I wanted to help support the school in addition to being a parent and joined the Board of Trustees. I am excited to be a part of the ongoing growth, and commitment to excellence that New Roads is dedicated to and happy to support a school that truly believes in helping children of different learning styles, ethnicities, and who come from different economic backgrounds. My husband Jeff and I also support The Water Buffalo Club, which is a charitable organization that provides financial support to children’s charities, and hosts events that foster well-being for under-served children in the Los Angeles community. I feel very passionate about supporting children in need and helping them get the opportunities they would not have otherwise. ■

After Christmas Sales You Want to Shop Article by Sherisse’ Woodley I don’t know about you, but when I was younger, my grandma and aunts would take us to go shopping the day after Christmas. It was to the toy store, but it was still a day my cousins, and I looked forward to. Every year I would get the newest edition of the Easy Bake Oven, and every year my mom would beg my grandma not to get it. Well, thank God, she didn’t listen because I’m a low-key fantastic baker. But, that is beside the point. Though the day after Christmas is not as big as Black Friday, it is still important. Here are some of the after-Christmas sales you should check out. If you didn’t know already, a lot of stores cut their prices the day after Christmas. Why? Because there’s some people in your life, who give gift cards instead of buying you something you can open the day of Christmas. Now, don’t get me wrong, money is always good to get even for Christmas.

clearance section and let your mind be blown. A lot of times you can get brand-name merchandise for a good price. Remember winter starts December 21st; if you live in a cold place, this is the best time to add more items to your winter wardrobe. Before you go out and shop check to see if department stores like Dillard’s, Macy’s, and Kohl’s have any coupons you can use. Toy Stores This is where my cousins and I went all the time. We would get all the money we got for Christmas and spend it all on toys. Well, at least my guy cousins. I was smart and used my cute little girl face and had my toys paid for by my grandparents, aunts, and dad (because I’m a daddy’s girl). If you have a child or buying a last-minute gift, you forgot to get for a child this is the place you want to be after Christmas. Just remember to look for coupons to get the best deal.

Department Stores This is one of the many places Holiday Décor you want to check out. Go to their This is a given; all Christmas

decorations are the cheapest you will ever find. This is the time to buy decorations and wrapping paper. Just because the wrapping paper or decorations are a fourth of the regular price doesn’t mean you should buy a bunch of them. Get things you will actually use or items that are no longer working that need to be replaced for the next year. The last thing you want your home to turn into is a warehouse of hideous Christmas décor and wrapping paper. Be Smart Just because it says buy one, get one free doesn’t mean it’s a deal. Read the fine print, do your math, and don’t overspend. Some stores may have “Today Only” and “Limited Time” on their ads, email blasts, and storefronts. Do not fall for it. Just like you make a list before going to the grocery store, make a list before you go after Christmas shopping. So, remember to go out and buy yourself something special. Happy Holidays! ■

Workout Gear That Will Keep You Warm Article by Sherisse’ Woodley Just because it is cold outside doesn’t mean your workout routine needs to come to a halt. If you have a gym membership, this is the time to use it instead of going out and getting your run in. But, if you’re one who likes the outdoors or doesn’t have the luxury to pay for a gym membership you need to make sure you are keeping yourself warm while working out outside. There are a few things you need to keep in mind when working out outside. Stay Dry This is very important; if you’re used to running in the mountains and through rivers this time of the year is not the time to do it. Keep yourself as dry as you can. That also means wearing the right workout attire that will allow your sweat to dry and not sit on your body. So that means no cotton workout gear. Stay Warm Layer up. I know it may be uncomfortable in the beginning, but when you’re on your last stretch of your workout and the temperature is only dropping more and more by the minute one layer of clothes is not going to do it. Wear a long sleeve shirt with a down vest or jacket. When you layer up, it provides better insulation from the cold and allows you to move around freely. Wear Tight Clothes Now, I know what you’re thinking. Tight clothes in the winter?

62 // Deliberate Magazine

I’ve been stuffing my face with my grandma’s cookies. But, there is no mistake in this title; it has a lot to do with science. When you wear compression tights, it helps the circulation in your legs. Why do you think athletes wear tights? It also helps you warm up faster because the heat you are generating has nowhere else to go. Have you ever worn a long sleeve shirt during an intense leg day? I did the other day, and the amount of sweat that exited my body took me by surprise. Protect Your Extremities Don’t only think about keeping your torso and limbs warm. You also have your hands, ears, nose, and feet. Make sure to wear the correct socks and if it’s cold enough wear gloves, scarves, and headbands that cover your ears. But remember, just because you’re wearing this extra gear doesn’t mean you shouldn’t protect your skin with sunscreen. Just because the sun is not visible, you can get very sunburned in the winter. This is the Time to Wear Bright Colors During the winter, it’s not as sunny as it is during other parts of the year. If you’re going out to run make sure you are wearing bright clothes so drivers can see you. The last thing you want to do is spend the holidays in the hospital because an unfocused driver didn’t see you in your all black Juicy Couture tracksuit (which by the way is something you shouldn’t wear

out during a workout; remember cotton is not your friend.) And, if you’re running before the sun is out or after it’s gone down wear something that reflects off the light so drivers during the night can see you before it’s too late. ■

Fashion Repeating Itself

H

The Chronicles of Fashion apropos of fashion repeating itself in subtle transformed forms at the dawn of every new era. Today’s broadly followed fashion trends singularly relate to the vogue of the 20th century. In the opening decade of 20th-century style was a collaboration of linen tailored suits, silk braided open side vents, mock waistcoats, waterfall jabots, silk covered buttons that peculiarly matched with the minute detail on the slim fitted, three-quartered sleeves. The silk ribbon trimmed hats and the legacy of the Victorian era enhanced the elegance, grace, and divinity of the gentlewomen. Customary fashion houses like Vernon, Maggy Rouff, Paul Poiret, Drecolle, Worth, and Redfern invariably supplemented women apparel with their idiosyncratic techniques. Fashion became an expression of upmarket leisure and elite society, only for those who could afford it. The turtleneck tops that add certainty and poise to women wear, to me, seem to be originated from the embroidered high stand collars of the couture wear of the late 1910’s. Chokers have ef-

64 // Deliberate Magazine

Article by Shravani Chavan fortlessly leveled up the bar of fashion accessories over the recent years. Being a worldwide phenomenon accepted by women walking the streets to those walking the red carpets, chokers also show semblance with the 1910’s fashion and setting the indisputable trend season after season. Eton collars, the 1910’s fashion symbol is still not out of fashion as eminent fashion personalities are always seen promoting it. Designers like Victoria Beckham are always seen promoting diaphanous Eton collars, prominently in their pert- a- porter outfits. Chanel, a brand synonymous with success is frequently seen experimenting with Eton collars in their haute couture outfits. If analyzed carefully these trends are more dominant than those formulated presently, the classic touch appended through them has certainly evolved. But isn’t evolution the route to discovery of fresh, innovative icons? The second decade of the 20th century didn’t bring much novelty to the fashion but proved to be an inspiration for designers. They singled out the ignored, minuscule details that form the base of any garment. There was a tangible evolution in the variation of details that truly make a dress,

like collars, sleeves, necklines and the fitting fashion accessories, the hats and the scarfs. The experiments by Stein and Blaine, Paquin and Bergdorf Goodman with bold combinations of contrasting colours gave rise to colour blocking, which as suggested by several stylists is the key technique to an unusually fresh look. The heritage-rich shawl collars which complete a tailored coat and the easy-to-wear wrap over broadcloth suits still have their essence of origin from the 1930’s. The 1940’s was the dawn of the contemporary era of fashion. It witnessed the breaking of customary rules, birth of rebels who disrupted dressmaking and establishment of self-evolving and revolutionary trends. And it all transformed with the launch of a line by Christian Dior named ‘Corolle,’ a collection subsequently dubbed as the ‘New look.’ His never-play-by-the-rulebook character unofficially originated the curvaceous, full bust, small waist, lean and elegant looks which propagated and celebrated opulence in women’s fashion and feminism. His ‘The Bar’ suit from the collection has marked a change in the timeline of fashion. This spirit caught over every designer of the era and then emerged

some invincible talents like Cristobal Balenciaga, Norman Hartnell, and Perrie Balmain who added their expertise, view, and sense to this change. This prodigy accomplishment in the craft of sewing clothes was relinquished by the condensation of vast volume into a sculptural refinement. The knife pleat skirts, a creation of the 1950’s is seen enhancing designs by world-renowned brands as a staple feature. The sported different variations of a pleated midi skirt made them an essential buy every season. Coco Chanel revised and acclimated fashion to the principles of efficiency and probity of materials, principles that are the defining peculiarities of innovation. Her accent on the functionalism of sportswear and her appropriations from menswear, as well as from service and military uniforms, divulged with average haute-couture toilette styles and practices. She took the fashion world by storm with her signature tweed jackets, luxurious pearls and unique hats, a unification of inspiration from men’s apparel. The beauteous trends of the past century are staunchly doing their duty to make women sumptuous as they did before and with the modish touch proffered to them, they momentarily make women substantial. The emerging and established designers, the models, singers, actress, stylist are in a race with each other to revive and reproduce these trends. In future, we will get to see more of them revised and processed. In plain words of Rue Lala, “Those who ignore history are doomed to wear it.” ■

beginner, intermediate, or expert in fitness. Her videos include yoga, kickboxing, cardio, and dance. Prepare yourself for a body burn. 5K in Your Living Room If you are a walker, speed walker, or even a runner, you can still sweat it out indoors. For beginners, you can run or walk in place. It can be as simple as that. To kick it up a notch, you can add weights, pick up the pace, or raise your legs higher. Kick your knees up higher to even attempt a high knee march. Be sure to use those arms. To make your 5k a little more fun, you may want to do side stretches, squats, or even a random burpee. Anything to keep your legs awake to finish your workout. Equipment Don’t immediately consider a big buying decision in workout equipment. You do not need heavy equipment in your home to make your workouts effective. There are cheap and easy alternatives to get you sweating at home. The jump rope, for instance, burns many calories. Just a 30 minute a day routine will help shed some pounds. An exercise ball is another excellent piece of equipment. There are endless exercises. Most workout balls come with workout pamphlets to guide you. If you do not have

weights at home, most are not too pricey. They come in handy when you need to tone or add a little extra weight to workouts. The last piece of equipment to consider is a yoga mat. Yoga helps you burn calories as well as relax. Besides yoga, the mat comes in handy for your YouTube workouts. Free Equipment If you prefer not to spend money, or have none at all, you are still in luck! You do not have to buy a thing. One crucial piece of equipment you already have is an electronic device. You can use the YouTube videos recommended, or search for your own. Almost every social media platform has tips and workout suggestions. You can also search the web. However, sit-ups, pushups, and jumping jacks are just as great. The workouts we use to do as children are still as useful as they were then. You can use the chairs in your home as well. They work perfectly for butt busters. Your couch can help hold your feet, if you slide them under, while doing sit-ups. The last piece of equipment is your bed. There are family-friendly workouts to adult workouts you can do in bed. (Search via bed workouts for more info.) So working out with “nothing” is easier than you know ■

Keeping Your Stress Away During the Holidays Article by Sheralyn Woodley If you were to talk to me about the holidays, I would tell you that I do not stress as much as I used to. One of the reasons is that my children are grown, so we don’t have the same pressure that we used to. Now, this does not mean that they do not want things for Christmas. However, their priorities and tastes are different and more mature. It is a blessing that now they know the true meaning of Christmas. Schedules However, my parents are older and live over ten hours from me, so I miss seeing them regularly. My siblings also live over ten hours in different parts of the country. The only time we have all been able to get together has been for the holidays. However, due to work schedules, school schedules, vacation schedules, unexpected expenses and cost of travel we have not been able to see each other the way we would like and have planned. Priorities You and I have to set our priorities up front. There are some things that we can control and others that we cannot. We can control how much we will spend, whom we spend it on when we spend it, what we spend it on and definitely where we spend it. When we realize that we have the power to say “YES” and “NO.” Gifts Do not allow the holidays to stress you out. During the holiday seasons, you will hear this often. Parents want to

68 // Deliberate Magazine

have gifts for their children. Husbands are looking for that gift for their wife. Wives are looking for a perfect gift for their husbands. What do you get your boss? What about my best friend? How do I afford to buy all the gifts on my lists? I also need to go to holiday parties and have to buy different outfits. How am I going to get it all done? What am I going to cook? The Reason Because other people are stressed does not mean that their actions have to affect yours. Do not try to live as others or purchase as others. This is the perfect time to shout from the rooftop that “Jesus Is the Reason for The Season.” The holidays begin with Thanksgiving

where we take time to thank God for His many blessings. Next, is Christmas where we celebrate the birth of Christ. Afterwards, we observe a brand-new year on Jan 1st. During these times we utilize your chance to spend quality time with friends and family. Solution To reduce your stress during this holiday season set a budget, stick to the budget, and manage your time. Above all choose joy and happiness. You must keep a somewhat regular schedule and stay healthy. Also, you must choose to be peaceful even when tense times arrive. Enjoy your holiday! ■

not feel guilty for indulging in a second heaping of food and 3 cookies plus a slice of pie. The important part in not shaming yourself while indulging in foods you don’t normally allow yourself to have and getting back on track after. Don’t let one day of poor eating spill over into the new year. Get your fix and then get back on track. Listen to Your Body Just because there’s pumpkin pie, peach cobbler bites, bourbon cupcakes, pecan pie, green bean casserole, and whatever else there is on the serving table doesn’t mean you have to eat it all. Remember, you don’t normally eat this way so bombarding your body with all this food because it’s there can make you feel sick. Just because there doesn’t mean you need to eat it all. Be smart but also enjoy. Go Crazy for the Veggies Load your plate up with veggies and then add in the other not so good stuff. Just because there’s mac and cheese, turkey, and veggies doesn’t mean you need to fill your plate with mac and cheese and 2 pieces of turkey. Lastly, get some of the healthier items on your plate and eat until you are satisfied, not full.

Staying Healthy During the Holiday Season

Learn to Say No If you feel yourself getting full and your grandma is asking you if you want another plate learn to say no. It’s okay to say no; especially when you feel like you’re going to pop. The last thing you want is the be so stuffed that you go into a three-day coma. If you’re at a party and the host asks you, a simple way to decline is saying, “Thanks for offering; however, I’m full right now, but I’d love to take some home to munch on later.” Remember, when you’re full, stop eating and let your body digest

Staying healthy during the holidays can be hard. There are endless amounts of food and sweets just calling your name from the kitchen. Before you know it, you’re up 10 pounds on the scale and have a food baby with a sugar rush. This holiday let’s be smart with what we put in our mouths and be a little more active. Here are some tips to stay healthy during the holiday season.

Trim on the Trimmings Instead of loading your turkey and mashed potatoes with two spoons of gravy try to omit it completely, or put only a small amount on your plate. The same goes for other sides like cream sauces, butter, and extra pie crust. I don’t have to worry about pie crust because I like to scoop out the filling and leave the pie crust for the next person.

Limit Your Splurge Days Yes, the holiday season is from November until the beginning of January; however, it doesn’t mean you should eat from Thanksgiving to New Years. Limit your indulges to the actual holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Years Eve, and New Years. Doing this allows you to stay on track on your healthy eating and limits you from over eating for three months.

Get Moving After eating suggest going for a walk in the neighborhood or do a quick workout before you eat. Staying active during the holidays will also help you get back on track afterwards. Just because it’s Christmas doesn’t mean you can’t continue working out. I got in an early workout, Thanksgiving morning, then came back to carb up. Believe me, you will feel a lot better eating food you don’t normally eat when you know you already made room for those extra calories. ■

Thanksgiving Feast Tips Article by Zareth Rodriguez Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. I want to share some tips on how to make a feast that will leave everyone you know talking and probably sleeping on your couch from overeating! Preparation is the key to success. When you are cooking a feast and one that will be memorable you need to prepare in advance. If you know you are

70 // Deliberate Magazine

having more than four people, your turkey should be the first thing you buy in advance; the reason being that you need to defrost that turkey at least a week before. I season my turkey a minimum of three days before the day it is going to be cooked. Turkeys are big, and you need to let them marinate and soak in that seasoning, so it is flavorful.

FOOD & DRINK

If you have it seasoned and ready, you can also cook it on time. There is nothing worse than being invited to eat Thanksgiving dinner, and the food is not prepared. I have included a very good guide for the correct temperature and baking time for the size of the turkey. If you want to try something new for your feast, don’t wait until the day of the party to cook it. Cook it before and have your family try it. Their opinion should help you and let you know if it is good to try or not. The same applies to any desserts or side dishes. Some ingredients may be hard to find that is why having a good recipe and buying the items in advance is a good thing. You do not want to be adding stress to yourself by not finding ingredients and being forcing to change the menu last minute. Depending on your guest list I will recommend trying something new. However, also keep it traditional. Many people only eat turkey during this season. A well-balanced feast will be with a well-cooked turkey that will be complemented with the traditional casseroles and side dishes that make it Thanksgiving. Don’t only make it about the food. Thanksgiving is all about giving thanks. Prepare some games or write some words of thanks to the people that you have invited. A simple thank you card with heartfelt words not only will make the holiday memorable it will positively impact your guest. One thing that works for me when cooking a turkey is to slow cook it. I usually place my turkey in the oven at midnight. I started at two hundred and fifty degrees until six in the morning. Then from there, I turn the temperature up. It allows the house to smell amazing and it will cut down on cooking time during the day. That will allow you to cook the other dishes and not be so rushed. Dessert should always be made in my experience the day before the event. If

you are baking it allows you to make sure that you pay attention and create the perfect dessert. If you are wondering about the freshness of it, don’t worry depending on what you are making there are ways to keep them fresh. Another thing I like to do is to cut every vegetable and anything that I can the day before. That way the amount of work during the day of the dinner is less. You might think if you start early you will have the time. However, account for making breakfast in the morning and other things that might arise. If you are prepared the smoother it will be for you and your guest. It is not fun to have a feast at your home, and you spend the night in the kitchen making sure that everything works and that the food is cooked the way you wanted it too. Your guest should feel like you want to not only feed them but also to share time with them. Don’t be the harried crazy lady in the kitchen. Enjoy yourself and

make sure that your guests enjoy that time too. Another good thing about preparing some food the day before it allows you to have fewer dishes! I am the type of person that cooks and cleans at the same time. Making dessert the day before helps me to keep the kitchen cleaned and remaining some sense of normalcy as well. You want your food smelling amazing but also keep your guests wondering who cook all of it because your kitchen looks like you did not spend more than a few minutes in it. At the end of the day, the best advice is to be yourself. Show your gratitude to the people you love and to your guests but don’t go crazy over it either. It is a good thing to sit down and spent time with the people that you invited to your home. Don’t be afraid to start new traditions either. Do things that work for you and your family. Most importantly don’t forget to have a thankful attitude! ■

Gluten-Free Desserts Article by Ashley Frerking It seems that more people these days are gluten-free, whether by choice to be healthier or because they have gluten intolerance. Either way, I say more power to you! Fortunately, limiting the gluten in your diet does not mean you have to suffer because almost anything these days can be made without gluten: pizza, bread, and best of all, dessert!! Here are some gluten-free dessert recipes.

Buckeyes

As of fan of chocolate and peanut butter, these are amazing! If you’ve never had them, they are basically Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups except instead of cups; you have a ball! Ingredients • 1 1/2 cups peanut butter • 1 cup softened butter • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract • 6 cups confectioner’s sugar • 4 cups semisweet chocolate chips Directions 1. Mix the peanut butter, vanilla, and confectioners’ sugar. The dough is supposed to look dry, so don’t worry. Roll the dough into 1-inch

balls and put them on a cookie sheet that’s been lined with wax paper. 2. Stick a toothpick into the top of each ball before placing them in the freezer for thirty minutes (or until they are firm) 3. Melt the chocolate chips in a bowl set over a pan of simmering water. Be sure to stir frequently until the chocolate is smooth. 4. Dip the frozen peanut butter balls into the chocolate by holding the toothpick. Be sure to leave a little bit of peanut butter showing at the top, so that they look like Buckeyes. Once the peanut butter balls have their chocolate, return to the cookie sheet and refrigerate until serving.

Brownies Who doesn’t love brownies?? Now enjoy this chocolaty treat without all the gluten! Prep time for this recipe is 15 minutes, with 45 minutes to bake. Ingredients • 2/3 cup gluten-free baking mix • 1/2 cup cornstarch • 1 cup white sugar • 1 cup packed brown

72 // Deliberate Magazine

• • • •

sugar 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 2 eggs, beaten 3/4 cup margarine, melted

Directions 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees, and grease an 8x8 inch square baking dish. 2. Stir together the dry ingredients (gluten-free baking mix, cornstarch, white sugar, brown sugar, cocoa powder, and baking soda) in a bowl. Remove lumps. Next, pour in the wet ingredients (eggs and melted margarine) into the dry mixture. Use a large spoon or electric mixer on low until the ingredients have formed a smooth batter. This should take about three to five minutes. Scoop the batter into the greased baking dish. 3. The brownies will rise and possibly spill over into the oven. To prevent this from stinking up your oven, put a sheet of aluminum foil on the oven rack. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes or until an inserted toothpick comes out clean.

Chocolate Meringue Cookies I haven’t had many meringue cookies, but this picture looked absolutely amazing!

Ingredients • 3 egg whites • 1/8 teaspoon cream of tartar • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract • 2/3 cup white sugar • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder • 1/3 cup semisweet chocolate chips Directions 1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees 2. Combine egg whites, cream of tartar, and vanilla. Beat them until the whites create soft peaks. Add the sugar slowly and continue beating until stiff peaks form. The mixture will become glossy. Lastly, fold in cocoa and chocolate chips. 3. Drop the mixture onto a greased cookie sheet one teaspoonful at a time. Bake the cookies for 25 to 30 minutes. ■

Stress-Free Cookies to Bake Article by April Audett Christmas is just around the corner, and with the holidays comes a lot of baking. Every year, my family bakes enough to feed an army. Pies, cheesecakes, and most importantly, cookies. However, as I have grown up, I’ve realized how much work it is to make batches and batches of cookies. Even more so, as a mom. I long to take every Saturday and bake till I drop, but my one-year-old daughter will not let me do this. She is in a constant mama mood and will

74 // Deliberate Magazine

be with no one but mama when I’m home from work. So how do I accomplish both? How do I bake cookies that bring me joy and spend time with my beautiful daughter at the same time? The first cookie option is a simple sugar cookie recipe that allows time in between baking. It is a family recipe of mine that has been passed down. Maybe it was given to us by Pillsbury or Nestle; I’m not sure. However, my mom claims that it is a family recipe and to this day, it is one of my favorites! ■

Best Sugar Cookies Ingredients: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

1 ½ C. Butter 1 ½ C. Granulated Sugar 2 Eggs 1 ½ tsp. Vanilla 3 ½ C. Flour 1 tsp. Baking Powder ½ tsp. Salt (optional)

Directions: 1. Cream together the butter and sugar. Add the eggs and vanilla and mix well. In a separate bowl, combine together your dry ingredients. Add those slowly to the egg mixture and mix well until dough forms up. Don’t overbeat! 2. Turn dough out onto plastic wrap and chill at least 3 hours if not more. Once chilled, flour the countertop or board and lay the cookies out on a handful of flour. Roll the dough out at least ¼ of an inch thick. Bake at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes or until the cookies are just turning golden brown. Once cooled, ice with favorite frosting and decorate.

3. This recipe is great if you have kids! Make the dough, hang out with them for three hours and roll out the dough while they are taking a nap. If you don’t have kids, this can still work for you! Just make the dough before you go to work and then roll the cookies out when you get home. It’s a great recipe if you do not have time to designate a huge chunk of time to make cookies. 4. The next recipe I recommend is a snickerdoodle recipe. It is similar to the sugar cookie recipe in that it allows some time to relax before rolling the cookies out onto a sheet.

2. Of course, if these recipes stress you out and you want something simpler, you can go to the store and buy a roll of sugar cookie dough, but I would say, give these a shot! They are fun to make with others and are fun to enjoy afterward as well.

When everything is well mixed, add the remaining flour and salt. Beat the dough well till it is soft and elastic. If it is stiff, add a little warm milk. Throw in the crystallized fruits and nuts to the dough, mix and form a ball. 5. Sprinkle the dough with a little flour, cover it with a cloth and wrap it. Let it rise in a warm environment for about 5 hours. 6. When the dough rises (it should double in volume), mix it and form a ball again (or into several small balls). 7. In a greased fluted cake mold, add the dough, cover it with wax paper and let it rise for another hour. 8. Brush the cake with egg yolk and garnish with crystallized fruits and nuts. 9. Bake in oven 350 ℉ for about 25 minutes. Once cooked, decorate with powdered sugar. You can brush a bit of honey on top for added sweetness.

Ingredients: 1 ½ cup water ½ tbsp butter ½ tbsp sugar The skin of 1 lemon Salt (a pinch) 1 ½ cup flour 5 tbsp cornstarch 5 eggs

Sonhos Oil to fry For the syrup: 1 ½ cups water 2 ½ cups sugar 1 cinnamon stick Peel of 1 lemon Peel of 1 orange

Directions: 1. In a pot, add water, butter, sugar, lemon peel, a pinch of salt and bring everything to boil. 2. Remove the lemon skin and add flour and cornstarch to the mixture. 3. Mix everything well with a wooden spoon to create a ball then remove the pan from heat and take the dough out into a large bowl. Keep stirring moving the dough around the bowl till it cools down completely. 4. Add the eggs to the dough one by one, beating each time you add an egg until they are completely mixed in with the dough. 5. Heat up oil in a skillet; you want the oil to be hot, but not too hot. 6. Scoop the dough with a spoon and put into hot oil. Be careful to not add too many balls at once so the oil does not cool down. While they are cooking, poke a hole with a fork through the balls, so they don’t burst. After they turn golden, move to a plate with oil absorbing paper. 7. After taking the excess oil from the sonhos, drizzle the sugar syrup and sprinkle powdered sugar and cinnamon. 8. For the syrup, add sugar to 1 ½ cups of water and bring to boil. Add a cinnamon stick, lemon and orange peel and boil for 15 minutes until it creates a soft consistency. Remove the peels and cinnamon stick and let the syrup cool before you pour it on the sonhos to prevent sogginess.

How to Set the Dinner Table for Christmas Article by Maria Sanchez Christmas Day is just around the corner. Thinking about on how to set your dinner table for Christmas? Looking for that perfect Christmas arrangement? Here are helpful ideas to start decorating for the holiday season. Red, Green, Or White Table Cloth Choosing which color of tablecloth to use for your dinner table can be a bit frustrating. Each color is vibrant, and it shows how it blends in with different Christmas decorations. If you are planning on using a red tablecloth for the dinner table, you can choose green candles and white dĂŠcor to go with the tablecloth. If you are going to choose green or a white tablecloth, you can place red candles in an arrangement to bring out the Christmas spirit.

Setting A Christmas Centerpiece When it comes to special occasions like Christmas, setting the dinner table can be quite challenging and especially when you are not sure on what to put as decorations. As for a centerpiece, you can gather poinsettias and arrange them in a long greenery runner and tie the branches together. For more Christmas spirit, you can add some sprigs of fresh berries throughout the display. Setting the Table Once you have realized table setting is not that challenging, you can choose the tablecloth, red, white, or green to match with the Christmas theme. To add a little Christmas spirit, you can choose plates that

FOOD & DRINK

have Christmas designs, such as a snowman or Santa Claus. You can now start placing the plates and the utensils on the table. Prepare the Table for Soup If you are planning to eat soup for Christmas, here are some helpful ideas to set the table. Soup is served in a bowl or a soup dish, atop of a dinner plate, and eaten with a spoon for soup at the outer right of the dish. Also, you can set a couple of butter knives, an extra spoon on the left side, and the right side of the dish, you can place one or two forks also on the left side. Setting the Table for Lasagna Eating your favorite foods, especially during the Christmas season can be enjoyable to eat. Once

you take out the lasagna out of the oven, it will be too hot. While you are waiting for the lasagna to cool down, you can set the table by placing a dish atop from the dinner plate, to avoid a person touching the hotness from the bottom of the dish. Christmas Cups or Glasses Deciding whether to use cups or glasses can be a bit intimidating, especially you are planning to match the right plate and glassware for the special occasion. You can choose Christmas glassware to match the Christmas spirit that you have at the table. If you are not planning to use glassware, you can choose to use red plastic cups, or Christmas cups the can be re-useable. Christmas Table Mats Sometimes it is challenging to select the right table mat for the dinner table; especially there are many choices to select while you at the store. You can select a table mat that is shaped like a poinsettia, snowman or a snowflake. Any Christmas design for a table mat would work; especially some colors that match the Christmas theme at the table. â–

Dealing with Difficult Relatives During the Holidays Article by Alexandria Magana The Holidays are times to roll out the red carpet for the whole family to frolic together. Each moment that goes by is a moment you will not want to forget. Your family has been waiting for the Holidays all year. They are ready to see you and make more of those fond memories. These are times the entire family hold dear and sacred to their hearts. However, you may feel differently about the Holiday experiences with them and begin to panic. You may even try to think of an excuse to ditch this year. Unfortunately, everyone knows you are alive and well. It is time for you to get that motivational speech that you need to hear before going. So strap your boots on, because like mama says, you are going.

82 // Deliberate Magazine

Conversation 101 At this moment, you are thinking in your head about your family, along with all the ‘horrible’ things that they have said or fought about during the last Holiday year. Now let it go because you will have a whole new set of memories to enjoy. However, before you can focus on the details about Holiday conversation goals, you need some personal reflection. Reflect on your behavior first. It does not matter if you are the “problem,” or if someone else is. Think of previous years, and how you come off. Your behavioral goals should be akin to being polite and kind. With this in mind, you do not have to think about their words; only yours. Let us move on and discuss topics to avoid. Say goodbye to politics,

finances, faith, and sexuality. Anything too personal (unless someone offers their information). Above all, leave the past in the past. What can you talk about? Well, you can offer some topics about yourself; also, allow others to contribute to the discussion. Tell your family your hobbies, how you have been and new events taking place in your life. Be sure to enter different conversations to keep those great ones going longer. Carry These Tips You cannot chat off their ear, so don’t bother trying. Here are some tips to help you “roll with the good times”. The first thing to get off the table is that wine. Don’t touch the bottle. If you would like to join in on a toast with your family, by all

means, do so; but be sure to limit yourself. No one wants recognition as the one who ruined all the fun. What you should not limit yourself to, is participation. Have a good time and help decorate, clean and also chase the kids. Remember this is a time to enjoy this while you can. So take part in your traditions, or make new ones. Your last tip is to stay true to yourself. Do not worry about who will object or accept your flaws. Your family will love you for who you are. Lastly, don’t try to rehearse your encounters; you cannot predict what to expect. For When It’s Too Much Some families are too expressive. Discussions may become intense, and problems may occur; you can never be certain. Just in case, prepare yourself for anything to come. First things first, think of the children. If you feel that certain events are too much for children to handle, remove them or offer to take them somewhere else as a distraction. Take the children in the other room or outside to play, as long as an ideal amount of distance takes place. Distractions are for the adults in these situations as well. If there comes a desperate need for one, try changing the subject to something they can’t refuse. Try a football game, celebrity gossip or

something that includes yourself. At times, you have to sacrifice yourself. You may be that person who needs the distraction. Go outside and get some air, understand your limits, and go out for that walk if you need it. Take time to yourself for your benefit. Try to do your best to be empathetic and listen. That’s what family is all about, and you may defuse a difficult situation and make it better by doing so. Everyone deserves recognition for the Holidays. Do your part by making sure it happens. Think About Them All families are different. No one can be positive on how each person experiences his or her Holidays with them. The bottom line is not about you, it’s considering them. You may think about your family or seeing all them now, and realize some are aging quite a bit. With age, comes great responsibility. Not by them, but by you. As the years go by, you get more energetic and lively, and others not so much. So, enjoy your family, be present, and most importantly cherish the moments you have together. ■

This Is How to Not Overspend this Holiday Season Article by Sheralyn Woodley

Depending on where you are going or what you are buying the holiday season begins around the first or second week of November and ends the around the second week of January. This means that there are two-plus months to control your spending. To not overspend, you must exercise self-control, discipline, time management, restraint, and wisdom. Most of all you must be willing to say “NO when needed and when appropriate. Gifts Make a list of everyone you intend to give a gift to along with the amount and possible gift idea. There are four gift rules to considers when purchasing gifts: things they want, need, wear, or read.

84 // Deliberate Magazine

Budget Set a budget for the holidays. If you do not set a budget you will spend on impulse, spend to satisfy friends and family as well as spending because of the terrific sale. Identify and list everything (at least as much as possible) that you intend to spend money on. This list needs to include office parties, family meals, clothes, travel, gifts, extra groceries, etc. Set a goal to not charge

LIFE

items on your credit cards. This way you will not start the new year with additional debt. Share Do not let your pride get the best of you. Share expenses with your friends and family. Do not be afraid to share or split the costs of meals, travel, groceries, or gifts. Many times, we do not get help from others because we refuse to ask. Creativity Do It Yourself (DIY) websites can be very helpful and cost-effective. You do not have to purchase every gift. Some gifts can be created by you. These gifts can be a great family project. Many of your friends and family members have unique tastes, and this is an awesome way to meet them.

Discipline Without discipline, none of the above will work. A person must be willing consciously to exercise self-control, time management, restraint, and wisdom. If you do not have the money to spend hundreds of dollars for gifts for hundreds of friends and family, you must tell them “NO.” You can’t go into debt for Thanksgiving and Christmas meals and Christmas gifts. Reason When you celebrate the real reason for holidays, it is so much easier not to overspend. It is nothing wrong with giving gifts to the ones that we love and care for dearly. However, those same ones that truly love us will understand and still love us if we cannot afford to give gifts. Choose from this day forward that discipline and wise choices will govern this holiday season. ■

How to Enjoy the Holidays When You’ve Lost a Loved One

Article by Brooke Picou

86 // Deliberate Magazine

LIFE

The holidays are a time for family. You visit your family and reminisce about the good ole’ times. However, when there is a missing piece, it can be challenging to enjoy those suppose-to-be blissful moments. Losing a loved one is tremendously tough. Losing someone and getting through the holidays is even more difficult. Your heart aches, your stomach churns, and your eyes swell at the thought of the missing presence during the holiday season. The constant, nagging reminder in your heart that something—someone—is missing can be unbearable. It takes a toll on your happiness, and the absent piece can turn a delightful family gathering into a tear fest. This year will be the first Christmas without the rock of my family. It is going to be unusual and emotional without seeing him sit in his recliner on Christmas Eve opening his presents with his gap-toothed smile. I still find myself thinking, “What am I getting him for Christmas this year?” Then, I remember he is gone. So, I understand. Therefore, I want to say that it is entirely okay to feel miserable, furious, guilty, or whatever other horrendous emotion you are experiencing. However, you have to remember to still celebrate. Celebrate the birth of Jesus. Celebrate the presence of your breathing family. Most importantly, celebrate the memories you made with the ones’ who are no longer here. I know that is exactly what my lost loved one wants my family to do this Christmas season. Here is how to enjoy the holidays when you have lost a loved one. Stay Authentic Remember to stay authentic. Keep your emotions genuine. Make sure your words are true. It is painful to lose someone, and it may seem easier to avoid the truth, but the thought

that your loved one is gone will weigh on your heart until you acknowledge it. Do not cover up your tears with a mock smile. Instead, let true tears run down your face. Along with this, be honest about how you feel. Do not try to spare someone from your dispirited thoughts or emotions, because I can almost guarantee that they feel the same way. Getting through the Christmas season when you have lost a loved one is hard, so stay true to your feelings. When you continuously fake it, it will become much more difficult to enjoy the holidays. Cry it Out When the whole family is bottling up wretched emotions and painfully holding in their cries, you will never get passed this difficult time. It is the holidays, and you should all be happy, but whether you are smiling or not, everyone knows no one is truly happy. So, do not forge that happiness. I am here to tell you to cry it out. Cry it out as much as possible, because everyone else feels the same way. However after you are done crying, place a smile on your face and enjoy the holidays, because that is exactly what the ones above would want you to do. Laugh it Out Once you have allowed yourself to cry it out, laugh it out. Pull out old photo albums or tell your favorite stories about your lost loved ones. Laugh about the great times you had with them. Talk about them and remember precisely why you loved them so dearly. Turn the tear fest into a laughing fest. Talk about their smell, the words they mispronounced, how they cooked, their favorite activities to do on a Sunday, and everything else. Keep their memory alive because then, that missing piece might not feel as absent.

Honor Them Whether this is your tenth Christmas or first Christmas without your missing loved ones, you can still honor them. Make their favorite dessert or give everyone a gift in their name. Honor them and allow their memory to live on during every holiday season; this way, it will not be like they are lost. Recognize their missing company and recollect the remarkable people they were. You will never have their physical presence again, but their memory and love can stay alive for eternity. Let Yourself Be Happy When you lose someone, it can be hard to let yourself be happy without him or her. When you find yourself smiling, you feel guilty. For a split second, you find yourself genuinely happy, and you become remorseful, because how could you actually be happy without him or her? However, let yourself be happy. It is okay to smile, laugh, and feel joy when that person is gone. You are not a wicked person, and you most definitely are not forgetting about your loved one. You are just continuing with your life. You can keep the memory alive, and you can miss him or her while still having moments of bliss. Sometimes, it just takes letting yourself be happy to actually find that happiness. No holiday will ever be the same, but you can enjoy the Christmas season again. Come together with your family and cherish the moments you had, laugh through the tears, and smile while thinking of your favorite memories. Your loved one is gone, but you can still keep that love alive. ■

Holiday Traditions You Should Try With Your Family Article by Sheralyn Woodley Traditions are usually passed on from year to year and generation to generation. Traditions can be handed down from a person (or group of people) to others. Some traditions are fun, and you can keep score of who is winning. While other traditions are based on members of the family getting together to accomplish a task – cooking, decorating, shopping or serving, Other traditions can be you simply accomplishing a task alone – DIY, reading, or watching movies. As you can see traditions are things, ideas, beliefs, or foods that have a significant or symbolic meaning to us.

88 // Deliberate Magazine

Intent Some traditions have been around for years. When they have been passed along from genera-

tion to generation, we sometimes have a hard time determining the origin and the original intent. If we are not careful, we can follow traditions and not understand why. Start If you already have traditions, that is great. Take time this holiday season and explain to several people the reason you do or believe the way you do. If you have not begun any traditions yet, it is definitely not too late to start. Together The best part of holiday traditions is that you get to do them with other people and with people you enjoy being around. You also look forward to the holiday season because you know that you are going to do certain things

LIFE

with certain people that bring joy and happiness to your life. Most of the time you speak with the people ahead of time and begin to plan which creates anticipation. When children are involved this expectancy is even more significant. Respect Traditions are different for everyone. They have various meanings and importance to each person. It is vital that we respect the traditions of each other. We may not understand or agree why a person does something, but that does not give us a reason or right to bash their tradition. Some traditions have been going on for 50+ years, and the parents and grandparents are still keeping them alive. You may have another way of doing it now, however, out of respect, allow some traditions to continue. If possible, try

to find the history of the tradition for the family. Once you understand the origin, sometimes it can be updated, if everyone agrees. However, do not do anything that will cause conflict Holiday Traditions You Should Try with Your Family Below are some traditional ideas to try. Feel free, to begin with an idea, however, modify them to match your family’s dynamics, wants, needs, and personalities. Also, ask around to see what other families are doing as well as your friends. 1. Bake desserts 2. Buy a Christmas tree 3. Buy new or additional decorations 4. Make (DIY) ornaments for your tree and home 5. Make sentimental gifts 6. Plan family dinners and family time

7. Help others 8. Serve a group of people that are less fortunate than you 9. Go to church 10. Locate family members that you have not seen or talked to in years 11. Read the Christmas Story 12. Take lots of family pictures 13. Play games 14. Watch movies 15. Cook dinner and meals 16. Go on a vacation Let this be the year that traditions and memories are made in your life. â–

Are You Making These Money Mistakes? Article by Daree Shannon

With the holidays being just around the corner there are so many things to keep in mind. The holidays are a time when people come together to celebrate and have fun. It’s also a very stressful time of the year because it leaves many in debt.

90 // Deliberate Magazine

Every year people are spending a lot of money on holiday gifts, decorations, and festivities. The holidays don’t have to be about the extravagant gifts and parties. It’s more about spending time with the people you love and less about

spending money on expensive things. American’s spend over $800 during the holiday season. Overspending and wasting your money can be avoided by not making these money mistakes during the holidays.

LIFE

Spending More Money Than What is On Your Debit/Credit Card This is the number one mistake people make during the holidays. Spending more money than what is on your debit/credit card is the easiest way to create debt. If your debit/credit card only has $500 then remember that’s your limit. It’s important to save money for small purchases and charge things for the big purchases. Not Looking for Those Holiday Deals & Paying Full Price for Low Quality The great thing about the holiday season is every single store offers that special holiday sale. People go into debt during the holidays because they don’t take advantage of these deals. It’s important to remember not to spend a lot of money. When buying special gifts for Christmas start looking for the lowest amount to spend and then go up. For example, I had been looking for a camcorder camera, and Best Buy had a Go Pro for $300. However, instead of buying that expensive camera, I waited and bought a Sharper Image camera on HSN for around $80. Find the best buy for your buck because chances are you’ll save money, and who doesn’t love a good sale? Ever paid full price for an item that wasn’t even worth the money? The holiday’s more and more people are guilty of paying full price for low-quality items. Especially people who wait until the last minute to do holiday shopping. They are forced to buy gifts that aren’t worth the money to get their holiday shopping done in time. The best way to avoid this mistake is to start your holiday shopping early. It doesn’t have to be the day after Thanksgiv-

ing. Start holiday shopping especially for kids as soon as fall starts. Also, never pay full price for an item that isn’t worth it. If you are not satisfied with the item and the price you’ve paid always get your money back. Buying Expensive Wrapping Paper One of the many mistakes being made each year during the holidays is buying expensive wrapping paper. While it’s true that wrapping gifts is a holiday tradition it doesn’t have to break the bank. Go to Dollar Trees to buy wrapping paper and gift bags. They have amazing selections that only cost a dollar. Besides, why spend a lot of money on something that will just be thrown away? Going into the Savings Always avoid going into your savings to do your holiday shopping at all costs. If you have been saving money, the last thing you want to do is start spending it. That’s what causes people to go into debt and lose the things that are important to them. No gift is worth sacrificing your retirement money, financial goal, or financial security. If the holiday gift isn’t a necessity then it’s definitely not worth going into the savings. Buying Gifts to Impress People The holiday season makes people want to buy special gifts to impress others. We care what people think and we want them to like the gifts we give. Remember that it’s the thought that counts and it’s okay to tell someone that you’re on a budget. Don’t go broke trying to buy expensive gifts to impress people. People in relationships are

very guilty of this. They try to buy expensive gifts to impress and hang on to their relationship. If the relationship is new, then hold off on the extravagant gifts especially if you can’t afford it. Buying More than You Need There are so many things that people buy during the holidays, it’s important just to buy the things you need. When it comes to grocery shopping, some people are grazers. Grazers go through the aisles putting things into the cart without a thought. Researchers show that 60% of people’s purchases come from impulses. When doing your holiday grocery shopping make a list and stick to it. Don’t put anything in your shopping cart that’s not on the list. Buying things that you don’t need is unnecessary and the worst way to waste your money. Overspending to Get Free Shipping Despite free shipping and buy one get one free being deals they can cause you to overspend. Online shoppers are very guilty of overspending to get free shipping. Take the time to do the math and see if it’s worth spending more to get free shipping. It’s better to spend $15 on shipping than to add $30 to your total. The same goes for the buy one get one free deal. Consider whether or not you need to purchase more items to get one free. These deals are often just the store’s way of getting rid of items that haven’t been selling. The holiday season is supposed to be the happiest time of the year. Don’t make it the most stressful by making these money mistakes. ■

Spending the Holidays Alone Artilce by Zareth Rodriguez

One thing I had to face while moving away from my family and being truly single and with no family members near me, was on spending the holidays alone. It was not easy, but I believe that with some help it could end up being the most amazing time for you. At one point or another in your life, you might find yourself spending time alone. When you are thinking of getting a new pet, adopt one from a local shelter or pound. There is an immense homeless animal epidemic in our nation. Seven million new cats and dogs will enter shelters this year alone. It could be that you moved and lived far away from your family. It could be work that is keeping you away, whatever the reason is

92 // Deliberate Magazine

here are a few things that can make it better. These helped me, and I am confident it will give you some ideas. Be Positive The mind is a powerful weapon and is crucial to your success in spending the holidays alone. I remember my first year alone. I did not know anyone and the church I was attending had amazing people and lots of fun things to do during the holiday season. I was in the pity party mood because my mind kept on thinking and focusing on what I did not have. The second year I started planning and getting more involved in volunteering. I did not deny invitations because I thought they felt bad for me and it was all in my mind. I spent the holidays miserable

LIFE

because my mind was stuck feeling sorry for myself. Don’t get stuck in feeling sorry for yourself. Be positive! This is the perfect opportunity to do something different. To meet new people and create different traditions. Our thoughts are powerful so make sure that you keep yourself encouraged and upbeat as much as you are able. I am not saying that you will not have moments of sadness, but they will not rule you or completely keep you in that frame of my mind for the entire holidays if you do not allow it. Be Open to New Experiences Be open to new relationships. You are not the only one spending the holidays alone even if you think you are! The part of Texas that I live in is considered a military town. Many soldiers spend the holidays alone. One of the things I decided to do was to sign up with an organization that writes and sends a package to soldiers who are alone or like to feel encouraged throughout any deployment. I send so many packages, and I really enjoyed sharing with someone else that didn’t know how I was keeping myself sane over the holidays.

I volunteered on Thanksgiving Day to feed the homeless. It turned out to be the best experience of my life. I enjoyed it, and at the end, I was able to share with people I did not know and some I did. If you do not attend a physical church, I encourage you to try it. The number of events and volunteering opportunities could be an excellent opportunity to meet new people and keep yourself busy. Family Time I would encourage you to plan and surprise your family in a way that will make you feel like you did not entirely miss out! Do a video, video calls with them or even make plans with other family members for a special gift for them. Technology allows for us to keep connected with the ones we love the most. If you have lost someone and you feel it most during the holidays, I will encourage you to spend the most time volunteering and spreading goodness. There is always an amazing effect when we decide to give our time and meet people that have gone through worst and needed some kindness and goodness in their lives. I lost my mom nine years ago, and I do things that remind me of her. I try to cook her favorite dish and give

it to people. Find whatever helps you to remember them in a good way and even though the grief may come, don’t let it consume you. Reach out and find a support group if need be. The Holidays are what you make them. Don’t wait for invitations to make things happen. If you receive invitations to family dinners, don’t hesitate to say yes. It might be a little awkward at first, but it will give you insight into different traditions that people practice. You can go home next year and implement them with your family! One important thing to remember and not because I said it last it means I forgot but I believe this is the most important one. The Holidays is all about Jesus too. We are thankful to God for what he gave us during Thanksgiving, and then we celebrate his birth in Christmas. Don’t forget what the holidays are all about. Apart from family and friends, a relationship with God is the most important one; this relationship will fulfill you and will help you not be so lonely during the holiday season. ■

Imagine the worst-case scenarios, and you will probably find there aren’t that many; none that either of you cannot handle with a little bit of preparation. Talking through your fears will help your partner understand how they can support you through them. It will also help them get better prepared for the worst-case

94 // Deliberate Magazine

scenarios, just in case! Ok, so maybe Uncle Jack always gets stupidly drunk, or you have an embarrassing cousin. Maybe it’s that your mom is overly critical of everything. Maybe the anxiety is about how your partner will respond to the highly charged, getting-to-know-you, questions at the dinner table. Either way, talking through the worst-case scenarios will help you both plan in advance and be better equipped for dealing with them. Highlight the No-go Topics Preparation is key here, for both parties. The holiday season is a time of joy, celebration and lots of family being together in the same room. You do not want any awkward faux-pas slipping into the conversation and leaving an embarrassing aftertaste for all involved. Make sure your partner knows about Aunty Suzie’s terrible divorce of which she will burst into tears at the first remark, and remember never to mention the war in front of granddad. Equally, prep your beloved family members. You do not

LIFE

want any dinner conversations to start with questions about your partner’s parents, only to have them answered with “My mom died, and my dad is in jail,” while nonchalantly passing the gravy. Help Your Partner Choose a Gift This is a good start for everyone. Gift giving is at the heart of the holiday season; therefore, helping your partner choose a perfectly personalized gift to give your family will go a long way. It will show their thoughtfulness, generosity, care, and gratitude for their invitation – all qualities your family would love to see in your perfect partner! Hopefully, the gift will be opened in front of everyone, so they can all “Awwww” at your partner’s fantastic choice. Victory is yours!

I never knew you were so great at doing x. For extra pumpkin pie, extend the compliments to your family members too. Your partner will get to know how great your family is and you’ll be responsible for the feel-good vibes going around. Be Yourself Perhaps the most important chestnut, be authentic about your relationship and be proud of who you both are in it. Failure will come from trying to control the outcomes too much. You will create huge expectations for yourself and others, leading to even bigger disappointments.

Of course, you want your family to love your partner as much as you do. But ultimately, how you feel in this relationship is what really matters. Don’t pointlessly rub concealer on the flaws, polish until sparkling, or pretend to be something you are not just to impress either party. Even if you survive this holiday get-together, everything you try to hide in the family closet will come out eventually. If your family sees how happy you are they will come to accept the one you love. Moreover, if your partner can’t accept your family as part of who you are, then they weren’t meant for the long run anyway. So, go and enjoy the holidays. After all, you will have everyone you love under one roof. ■

No Need to Jingle Any Bells Soft displays of affection are a good way to show your family you love and care for each other. But nobody wants to hear full on kissing – ever. Excessive caressing and being too touchy-feely is just not necessary. A good friend of mine recounts, “After a few drinks one Christmas, my boyfriend and I tried to sneak a quickie in the laundry room while everyone was partying upstairs. Regrettably, my five-year-old cousin walked in and caught us! He went straight upstairs shouting ‘they are naked, they are naked!’ You can imagine how much both of us wanted to die walking back into the room.” If you wish any family holiday success, don’t even go there. Praise Both Parties Liberally The holiday season is a time of positivity; so, take this opportunity to give compliments to both sides copiously. No one wants to hear you brag about how great your companion is; but, you can easily showcase his or her talents and qualities as clever compliments: • •

Thank you for helping me out with x, that was so sweet of you. I love how you always do x for me; it’s so thoughtful.

Christmas Albums to Add to Your Playlist Article by Arianne Arciaga

It’s that time of year again, where you not only hear the same Christmas songs over and over again. But also, the time of year, where you hear the same song covered by 20 different artists! Not to hate, though of course. Christmas music personally has always put me in a good mood and in the holiday spirit. Now that Thanksgiving has passed its definitely time to get into the holiday spirit. And since the holiday season is approaching, what better way to get into the Christmas and holiday mood than by music!

Christmas & Chill by Ariana Grande If you’re personally tired of hearing the same Christmas songs over and over again, “Christmas and Chill” is for you! This generation’s pop icon, Ariana Grande, released this album back in 2015. Christmas and Chill was a surprise gift for her fans during the holiday season, as she finished it in one week. Grande is no stranger, to Christmas music, as she released, “Christmas Kisses,” back in 2013. Christmas Kisses includes covers, of songs like,

CULTURE

“Last Christmas” and “Santa Baby.” However, Christmas and Chill has original songs, written by the songbird. “Winter Things” and “December,” were able to enter Billboard’s Top 100 list during the album’s release week. Glee: The Music, Christmas Album Volume 1&2 by the Glee Cast Coming from FOX, television show “Glee”, has given audiences numerous covers to dance and sing along to. In 2010 and 2011, the Glee cast had a chance for audiences to get into the holiday spirit. They have given modern acapella twists to songs such as, “Let It Snow” and Wham’s hit, “Last Christmas.” Both albums also include a few unpopular Christmas music. Those songs include, “Do You Hear What I Hear” and “Merry Christmas Darling.” Almost all the songs featured on both albums are not only accompanied by instrumentals but have their voices to make the beat. If you are looking for different versions of your favorite holiday songs, you should definitely look into both of these albums. Also, if you’re looking for some new ones.

only that, have you heard that guy’s voice?! Bublé’s voice definitely gives you the modern Frank Sinatra feel. Perfect, for getting into the Christmas spirit. Merry Christmas by Mariah Carey However, with all these Christmas albums we cannot forget the supposed “Queen” of Christmas. You can’t go on a “Best Christmas Music” list without seeing the name, “Mariah Carey.” Mariah Carey has been putting out covers of Christmas songs since 1994. With her album “Merry Christmas” (1994), she puts her own little twists to all of them. We cannot forget the ultimate holiday anthem, “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” With about 214 million streams of Spotify, this song

definitely gets played all year round. Though with countless interviews, Carey does not like to be called the “Queen of Christmas.” However, she definitely deserves it with 3 different Christmas dedicated albums. Her album Merry Christmas is definitely one of the classics to listen to. Christmas definitely has to be one of the most fun times of the year. Good food, good company, and good music. So, if you’re not in the holiday season mood yet, these albums will definitely help you get through that. And if you’re tired of hearing the same song on repeat definitely check out these albums! You will not only get a different tone to some of the songs but also a few new ones. All of these songs are available for download and on all streaming platforms. ■

Christmas by Michael Bublé Nothing says Christmas more than Michael Bublé. Released in 2011, Michael Bublé’s album, “Christmas” features all your favorite Christmas music. Ranging from John Frederick’s, “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” to Hugh Martin’s, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” Despite covering songs, from the 1900s Bublé has added a modern twist to some of them. Unlike, Mariah Carey’s, “All I Want for Christmas is You”, which gives an upbeat tempo, Bublé’s gives a soft jazz feel to it. Reaching to number 11 on the Billboard Charts, Bublé has shown that despite having a particular theme he is still able to earn a good spot. Not

Funny Kid Movies Adults Would Love Article by Arianne Arciaga Let’s face it. There is an inner kid within all of us. No matter how old we are, our ten-yearold selves will always be in us. As adults, we miss being a kid sometimes. We miss the feeling of not having to worry about anything. Like what to wear, what to eat, or going to work, etc. With these, movies adults can somewhat escape their adult life and unleash their inner child. What better way to get in touch with your inner kid?

Elf To get into the holiday season, let us start off with a classic. Will Ferrell stars in the 2003 Christmas movie, “Elf.” That is both funny and family friendly! Ferrell plays a Buddy the Elf a human raised by elves. When the reality hit that he is not an actual elf, he sets off on a journey to New York City to find his real family. Once he finds his family, he is now on his own journey to leave his elf lifestyle behind and start one “real” human. His innocence and true Christmas spirit remind

us that the holidays are about making those around us happier. Elf teaches us that it’s okay to be different. At the beginning of the movie, the audience is shown that Buddy is a little slower in making toys. We are also shown that he is having a little trouble on understanding how the human world works. However, everyone tells him that he is great at other things. As adults, we are still reminded of this. We may not be great at

CULTURE

one thing, but we can be good at another. We grow up feeling we need to be on this certain timeline of life, where at this age we need to have everything in place. Not only is Buddy a grown adult and despite him, being a grown adult, he is also still learning what being an adult means. Buddy still shows his innocence and inner child even after realizing he is not an elf. It is a good reminder for some us that we are still learning what it means to be an adult and that it’s okay to be a kid sometimes. And who can forget Will Ferrell and Zooey Deschanel’s duet in the movie? Truly, iconic. Meet The Robinsons Meet The Robinsons, is unjustly underrated. This movie is not the most popular movie that Disney has put out. Probably, the most memorable thing people know about the film is the famous quote at the end. “Keep Moving Forward.” The whole story surrounds orphan boy genius, “Lewis,” who is extremely motivated to find his real family. In his attempt to find his family he builds this machine that digs into his memory. With this machine, he hopes to reveal some sort of family memory. He presents this machine at a school science fair, and that’s where everything goes downhill for him. Lewis somehow ends up in the future alongside this boy named, “Wilber” and that’s where the whole plot begins. Throughout the movie, Lewis begins to understand the importance of failure and how

important it is to learn from your mistakes and to “keep moving forward.” Growing up one of the things we are most afraid of is making a mistake. This movie sheds so much light on failure and how when you fail; you are just one step closer to doing something correctly. This is an important reminder for everyone. As adults, we want things to be perfect more than anything. It’s important for us to be reminded that it’s okay to make a mistake even at this age. In the movie, they show Wilber’s family and how even as adults they are able to learn from their mistakes. The humor, musical numbers, and heartfelt message that comes out from this movie will truly have any adult in tears and smiles. Lego Movie If there’s one movie that comes to mind that, I know everyone loved the “The Lego Movie.” There have been a series of Lego movies that have come out after that, but no Lego movie tops this one. After its release in 2014, The Lego Movie has reached 69 million dollars at the box offices opening weekend being seen by both adults and children. The movie follows, “Emmet,” who is your average yellow-headed, curved handed guy. Emmet is somehow prophesied as the “Special,” who is to help save the world from President Business. President Business has convinced each Lego person that they have no uniqueness to them. He has convinced that they all have the same favorite song and television show. They believe that uniformity is the key to becoming successful. At the end of the movie, he realizes that he isn’t the only

special one because everyone around him is special. Legos have been around for almost decades, and if you want to own your nostalgia and fall back in love with one of your favorite childhood toys definitely check this movie out. The amount of adventure and imagination that comes out in the film will definitely bring out the child in you. It’s not just a film where your inner child come out, but it will definitely have you laughing at the different pop culture references. Pop culture references that kids may or may not particularly get. Though there is no specific, heartfelt theme or meaning to the movie. It is a reminder for us to express our individuality and that we are all special in our own ways. With the adventure, nostalgia, and great humor this movie is definitely enjoyable for both kids and adults. Also, everything about this movie is truly awesome. You can convince yourself that your grown adult. But there is no doubt something will trigger the child in you. With these movies, you will not only feel like a kid again, but you always be able to laugh with your niece, nephews, or kids. They will also set reminders for you as an adult that it’s okay to make mistakes and just to be a kid sometimes. ■

Classic Christmas Movies You Have to Watch Article by Suzan Magdy

Movies are a kind of art that is easy to understand and be affected by. That’s why our movie choices can change our lives in a way. During Christmas we always choose those related to the occasion, those movies that bring happiness, hope, connections and all of the things that make life significant. Here’s some of those classic Christmas movies that you don’t want to miss. The Polar Express The polar express is actually a classic book written by Chris Van Allsburg, which turned into a classic holiday movie. It is a Story of a young, brave and clever hero boy who does not believe in Santa Claus. A magical train takes him into an adventurous journey where he meets new friends, discovers himself and finally believes that faith and trust can turn your life into a magical place. This movie restores faith and beliefs in a way; it portrays that sometimes we must see in order to believe, but sometimes the only real things in our world are those that we cannot see.

Love Actually

Mrs. Doubtfire

Love actually is about Christmas love. Christmas time represents change or a new beginning in a way. It is a time of chances, risk and action. That’s why this movie take us into different love lives. One of a newly widowed man who is struggling with the loss of his beloved wife and raising his step son. A child who falls in love and doesn’t know if he should endure the pain of unrequited love or decide to take action. Another, the life of a public figure whose moves and actions are analyzed by the whole world and one of a lonely rock star who finally knew that love can be in an unlikely person or that there are many forms of love other than the romantic one.

Mrs. Doubtfire is not only a classic Christmas comedy movie, but one that we cannot not watch again. The story revolves around the breakdown of Daniel’s family.

Lots of lives, different from each other but the same in a way. From children who fall in love and experience its pain and insecurities, to adults who finally understand that love is limitless and it is acceptable even in the most unlikely places.

These classic Christmas movies will never get old, they are holiday movies where we can escape from life in order to recharge ourselves with love, hope and determination. They are a great escape and life changing in a way.

This movie will make you laugh aloud, cry, and maybe take a chance on love in your personal life.

Daniel’s life took a tragic turn, when his wife asked for a divorce. His children could no longer be around him, except during the times ordered by the court, and he lost his job. How Daniel reacted to that, is the most inspiring and what this movie is all about. It is about family, sacrifice, the hard work of love, and not giving up on the people we love or losing faith in our passion. It is funny, touching and inspiring.

We wish you a happy holiday with family and friends full of love, dreams and most importantly faith in tomorrow. ■

They either have everything or proclaim they do not want anything. Creating a homemade gift is the greatest idea for these types of people. Here are a few fun, homemade gift ideas to make this Christmas season. Jesus Jar Gather your favorite bible verses, religious quotes, and prayers. Write the verses, quotes, and prayers on strips of paper, or type them on a computer and print them out. Cut them into individual strips. Fold and place the strips inside a mason jar. Additionally,

you can decorate the Jesus Jar to add a special touch. Every day, your loved one can pick one of the strips of paper out of the mason jar and receive a dose of Jesus! A Jesus Jar is the perfect gift for the Holidays since it is a reminder of the true meaning of Christmas.

Personalized Dinnerware You can personalize any white plate, mug or piece of dinnerware. For this gift, you need to buy a plain, white piece of dinnerware and a case of sharpies. With the sharpies, write and draw on the plate or mug. Once you are satisfied with the drawing, place it in the oven at 350° for thirty minutes. Once the time is up, your drawing will be permanent. You can write out your favorite qualities about your loved one or make a family tree. You can even buy stencils to create the perfect design. The options are boundless! • • • • • • •

1/2 cup of cornstarch 1/2 cup of Epsom salt Approximately, 1/8 cup of oil (coconut, olive, grapeseed, etc.) Peppermint essential oil Food coloring (optional) Cupcake tins or molds Storage (clear candy bags, etc.)

Ribbon (optional)

Directions: 1. Mix baking soda, cornstarch, salt, and citric acid in a bowl. 2. In another bowl, add 3-8 drops of food coloring to the oil, or until the desired color. 3. Slowly add oil to dry mixture while continuously stirring. Continue until you get the correct consistency. You may not use all of the oil. You want the mixture to be damp, so it sticks together, but it should not be drenched. 4. Add 10-15 drops of peppermint oil, or until the desired aroma. Mix well. 5. Pack cupcake tin or molding with the mixture. 6. Let stand to dry and hardened for 8-24 hours. 7.
