CONCEPT This comprehensive project aims to introduce an educational space to create awareness of Hydrogen Fuel Cell cars in Santa Monica, California. The concept of the project is to interweave pedestrian and vehicular circulation. A test track is introduced to achieve a moving exhibit of the HFC cars. The organic shape of the structure generates openings that allow for the fluid movement of pedestrians into and through the building.

BUILDING ANALYSIS The programmatic spaces are arranged with the public/ educational spaces UP on the ground floor, semi-public café on the second floor and private PARKING DN administrative spaces on the third floor. A semi-public seating area on the roof allows for the view of the beach and Pacific Ocean. The basement is used for vehicle storage for closing hours of the showroom, to allow the space to be publically used at night. The atrium allows for visual connections of pedestrians and vehicles through out the building and emphasizes the fluidity SERVICE AREA of the form. FROM PARKING LOT

CONCEPT This investigation represents a mixed-use housing structure located in a once active transportation hub along the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, New York. It provides housing for single and multi-family households, as well as commercial establishments that create an understanding of the city as a place where people live in great concentration. The objective is to create five types of micro-units that are repeated, aggregated and are densified to create an architectural embodiment of urbanism.

CONTROLLING PRIVACY These units are then grouped and allowed to manipulate the facade, to create different exterior and interior conditions to privacy and a sense of ownership as well as create a connection to nature and the historical surrounding. This proposal intends to increase density of the area, while introducing clearly defined boundaries and meaningful connections to heal a frayed urban fabric.

FORMATION The physical aspect of the form was developed through a series of mathematical expressions created in the software Houdini. A cube was bounced and deformed between angled surfaces. After many explorations, a plane was allowed to do the same thing. This experimentation showed that the plane and the cube behaved differently due to the difference in their physical appearance. The next iteration allowed for the interaction between the plane and the cube. When the forms intersected, a Boolean expression was added in which the plane was subtracted from the cube allowing for further deformation of the shape. This created various spaces within the cube, which were manipulated to enhance the programmatic use.

SUBTRACTION METHOD

FORMATION SEQUENCES

INTERIOR ANALYSIS The children then enter the ‘art space’ or interactive space. This is a central space that is part of every learning zone. The spaces are not divided into separate classrooms; instead, niches create the separation of spaces. This creates a visual and audible connection between different activities. This structural system provides flexible spatial relationships in which spaces can be used for more than one activity. For example, the gym can also be the playground as well as different activities being carried out at different learning zones.

70 60 50 40 30 20 10

As shown in the cross sections, the Boolean expressions allowed for various intersecting spaces to occur, as well as create different openings for light to infiltrate into the building developing into various light screens that can create different atmosphere in each space.

NYCSUBMERGED + NYCRELOCATED This is a study of flood zones in Manhattan, NY after Hurricane Sandy. nycSUBMERGED is a representation of the Class A offices that will be underwater if the water level raises to Zone A (red), Zone B (orange) and Zone C (yellow). nycRELOCATED is an investigation to evaluate if Class A offices were to evacuate Zone A, B and C and relocate to the Safe Zone, if there would be enough space to support the businesses using the same classifications for the building typologies. ICFF used these models to introduce the effect of Hurricane Sandy in Manhattan.

CONCEPT After setting up a master plan with the Franciscan Monastery in Brookland, Washington D.C., this project was aimed to create a hermitage for anybody who wants to withdraw from this world of perpetual connectedness. This new typology of a hermitage aims to create a sense of cleansing through various thresholds of the 350 square-foot structure, as a metaphor of the cleansing the exterior world to reach a sense of enlightenment when reaching an open space with a major connection to nature. The project is located in a heavy wooded area on the Franciscan Monastery campus. Due to its unique location, environmental factors were taken into consideration, taking advatage of sun position, natural ventilation and stormwater collection.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS The most important space is the meditation area. It consists of a seating area with a stone bath. The introduction to natural materials is to create a piece of nature in the interior. Unlike the rest of the building that is open to the wooded area, the meditation space is enclosed to allow for an introverted meditation.

MATERIAL COMPRESSION STUDY This is a material exploration exercise in which a material is picked and used in an unconventional way to test its limit. The material chosen here is cardboard. Cardboard is composed of layers of corrugated fibers and flat sheets of paper. In conventional methods, this layering creates a medium that can be used for its lightness and strength in its depth but not its length. Cardboard is stiff and layered in a way that does not allow bending, so it always remains flat.

MACHINE LANGUAGE Machine Language is a speculative research examines the relationship between technology and nature with regards to aesthetics and conceptual ideas. My aesthetic interest was in exposing the inner mechanisms of a machine and connecting it with an existing natural form.

DANCING BRIDGE In this animation, layered dynamic surface engines were designed after extensive research of a structural system dissected from an existing bridge. With the knowledge of the functionality of each part that creates the design, manipulation of the original design can occur. In this scenario, the Python Bridge designed by West 8 Architects was analyzed and deconstructed to create an animation that describes how the parts fit together.

BY HAND This is a sample of hand drawings and watercolour painitings that I have worked on throughout my academic career. Although technology is extremely important to the design field, I believe that creativity always starts with the relationship between the hand and the brain.

“DRAWN TO DESIGN” BY ERIC JENKINS “ Reinforcing with Tectonics The tectonic form of a building comprises the relationship of structure to enclosure, of column to wall and wall-to-wall types; however, it can be simplified as description of building bones. These bones columns, beams, piers, walls, arches and vaults - may be isolated systems or intermixed to form complex tectonic systems. This skeletal system can orchestrate sequence or mediate scale The diagram of Union Station’s main entry hall shows how tectonics help mediate scale and orchestrate movement from the public plaza in to the Great Hall. Much of this is accomplished by intermixing a smallerscale tectonic system among the larger piers. The result are bays that support the vaulted roof, while the smaller columns and entablatures weave between the vaults to mediate the scales and create entry doors and other, smaller elements in the room.”
