Having not only firmly established Fake Bake as the nation’s favourite tan, it has also now become a globally-recognised brand. Through both her innovation and the development of revolutionary formulations, Fake Bake has paved the way for others to follow, including our amazing Fake Bake Beauty Consultants. As well as countless industry awards for products, Sandra has also received a host of business awards throughout her career, including NatWest Woman of the Year and she was hailed in the top 100 Most Entrepreneurial Women. Her global success has been the result of hard work and dedication to a brand she truly loves. Success is something that is within everyone’s reach, they only have to work for it. Here Sandra tells us how she made her dreams come true.

Tell us about the history of the brand and how it came to be?

What has been your key moments with Fake Bake?

“In 2000 I owned my own salon and loved it! I have always enjoyed working in the beauty industry, making people look and feel good is a passion of mine, but even with my own salon I was always looking to do more. My mum had suffered a melanoma scare and through my knowledge of the industry, I spotted a real gap in the market for a good self-tanning brand in the UK. So women could choose to fake it, not bake it and use products that were also beneficial to their skin with no parabens. I wanted for people to avoid what my mum went through.

In 2006, I presented a petition of 10K signatures at Downing Street to ban sunbed use for under 16’s. The petition was successful and I was absolutely delighted. Then in 2009 I launched Fake Bake Mobile, which was a business framework for spray tanners. This was to help girls start their own businesses with the support of a globally recognised brand. For me helping women in business is a priority, I feel there is room for everyone and if we share our successes they will only increase further.

This then took me off to the US, where I met the owners of Fake Bake and in 2001 I took the product back to the UK. I then took the tough decision to sell my business and focus on distributing Fake Bake from my spare bedroom. I was a young working mum at the time with another baby on the way, but nothing was stopping me from making a success of Fake Bake in the UK. And that’s what I did. With my car as my office and home as my warehouse, I very quickly developed Fake Bake into the most sought after and premium self-tan treatment in salons and spas.

So what was next? My focus has always been for Fake Bake to remain at the forefront of the tanning industry and so releasing revolutionary products every year was part of my business plan. I think it is so important that regardless of the business you have, you always strive to improve it. Be a leader with your business, not a follower and success will ensue.

With this in mind, in 2015 I worked with my best friend to develop Fake Bake Beauty at Home. We launched new product lines and created business opportunities for amazing people and I am so proud when I see our Consultants becoming beauty bosses in their own right.

Your story is inspirational Sandra, what are the main lessons you have learned to pass onto our budding Beauty Bosses? I believe opportunities should be grasped. You have to work hard, work smart and never give up. Dreams come true every day for people and they get there by being positive and focused. Concentrate your energies on what you want to achieve in life and you will get there. That is the whole mantra behind this Magalogue.

Tell us about life before blogging? I love writing, I love make-up and cosmetics even more. When I was at university where I studied English, I used to barely eat so that I could spend my money on products and I had an early obsession with YSL’s Touche Eclat. While other students were sitting cross legged on floors, I was glammed up to the eyeballs waiting for my next student loan to clear so I could hit the beauty halls. I did a bit of studying too. When I left university, I went for an interview at the Independent for a role as a trainee journalist. Unfortunately, I knew nothing about the world, current affairs, or anything serious, so the less said about that little encounter the better. I never even thought of writing about beauty. I just drew a line under the whole thing. So, I ended up doing what most people do when they don’t have a plan – I got a job in recruitment! I did this for quite a few years, with a few other things mixed in and after I had my son I went back part time as a bid writer, so I was getting a tiny bit closer to being the writer I wanted to be, except it was completely boring! Luckily, I was made redundant. It didn’t seem lucky at the time but it forced me to think about what it was that I really wanted to. Somehow, one day, after realising that a lot of the links I was clicking on twitter were blogs written by normal people, I decided to start one myself.

How did you plan for your success? I didn’t think about what it would bring. In fact, I didn’t expect it to bring anything at all apart from personal satisfaction. But my passion for cosmetics and beauty products grew and updating the blog became a full-blown obsession and addiction. No-one was telling me to write it, hardly anyone was reading it, but I felt terrible if I didn’t update it. This feeling drove me on and I worked and worked my way through my beauty stash. I had no idea what PR was until I received an email asking if I wouldn’t mind receiving some products for free. I was so suspicious and at first, I thought it was some way for someone to con my address out of me and come and rob

me in the middle of the night. But the allure of free fake tan grew too strong and one day I received a box of goodies and couldn’t quite believe my luck. I had to call my friend to come around and see it. A lot has changed since then apart from the way beauty products make me feel.

Tell us what a typical week is like for you? No week is the same but a typical day could be a bit like this… I get up and see my son off to school and then get on with any emails that have come in overnight. I usually wake up to several emails from my business partner and Rebecca who runs operations– reminding me of sponsored work for that day, GA figures from the day before, and other stuff that’s going on. I usually have a couple of blog posts written earlier to go live, but I always write one or two more. I then tweet, Instagram, and Facebook all recent posts and respond to any messages and updates on all those platforms. The Postman always comes with parcels and I review what’s urgent, I’d love to just sit down and go through all of them but I’m usually in a mad rush and often have appointments I need to get.

the positive ethos that the brand stands by. I am a huge believer in faking it rather than torturing your skin in the sun, and I am completely anti-sun bed use. Fake Bake’s Save Your Skin campaign is impressive. I hugely respect and admire Sandra Vaughan who is at the helm of the Fake Bake empire and recently battled and won her own fight against breast cancer. She never gave up and is a complete inspiration. I also love Victoria Halliday who lives and breathes the brand with ceaseless energy. They are like a family.

What are your fave Fake Bake products? My all-time favourite is Fake Bake Flawless. It is impossible to go wrong with and it always gives a beautiful natural colour even though I am super pale. I also love the coconut tanning serum and the body scrub, but my number one is Flawless. I recommend it to everyone.

What advice would you give to budding beauty bosses? It’s simple. Just keep going and don’t let anyone or anything put you off. Try not compare yourself to others. I always say, you haven’t failed until you quit. Don’t think too much, just keep going.

I tend to meet up with PRs or drop into events to see new beauty launches. I usually have meetings like these about 3 days a week, and I try to stay home to catch up on writing and projects for at least 2 days a week. I tend to work most evenings and weekends, but now that I have a team, I can take time off when I want to. Because I love what I do, I find it hard to stop sometimes.

What do you love about the beauty industry? I love how beauty makes me feel. It is such an inspiring industry filled with amazing talent and technology. Innovation and new products make me so excited and I never get bored of seeing something new. I have loved beauty products forever, so it’s exciting to be right at the forefront of it for my work now.
