Marching Band Starts on a High Note Noe Brady, Staff Writer The Green Hope Band is a well-known, accomplished music program consisting of over two hundred students. The band performs at a variety of events, including concerts at school, parades, competitions, athletic events, and many more notable community events. Three classroom ensembles (Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble) and four extracurricular ensembles (Marching Band, Indoor Percussion, Winterguard, Jazz Band) make up the band. The marching band is highly competitive and practices for over twenty hours a week. On October 7th, the marching band traveled to Newark, Delaware, to compete in the Bands of America MidAtlantic Regional Competition. Green Hope won “Outstanding Music”, “Outstanding Visual”, and “Outstanding General Effect” in the 4A class, as well as being named the 4A champion. After finals, Green Hope tied for “Outstanding Music” and “Outstanding Colorguard senior, Ruby Shah, said, “I feel like this competition was a good start to the seasons and proud of our performance in finals.” Their show is called “Unchained”, and represents a metaphor for releasing yourself from anything holding you back. Senior brass captain, Samer Issa, said “It felt amazing, especially our run in finals. Even though it wasn’t perfect, to get that feeling after finishing a run like that was just unbelievable. And seeing how far along we are in terms of progress compared to the past few years in mind-blowing.” The marching band went to another BOA Regional in Winston-Salem last Saturday, and finished in 5th place overall, and second in their class. The marching band is looking forward to all of their upcoming events, especially the Super 3 Regional Championship in Atlanta, on October 28th.

Before and After Thoughts Shea Kofkin-Hansen, staff writer

O C O As a junior, the 2017 Homecoming dance this Saturday will be the first of many school dances I’ll have the privilege of attending. The “neon out” theme seems interesting, but as far as I know, no one in my group of friends has bought an outfit reflecting the theme. I’ll be sure to take some pictures of people I see who do. What I’m definitely looking forward to is not only the awesome beforehand pictures we’re going to, but the dinner… I can’t think of anything better than sitting around a table with a group of my closest friends, eating great food, before rocking our best dance moves. I have my dress, my shoes, and my group. I’m ready for a great night full of laughter, and fun.

Homecoming night was a bit stressful at first. Imagine about ten girls in one house all trying to ready for pictures in time. With all girls made-up and three inches taller, we took pictures outside with our group and our dates. Dinner at Firebirds with a table of twelve started the night with food and laughter. These are my favorite moments, laughing and sharing memories with people whom I enjoy spending time. After dinner, my group was fashionably late to the homecoming dance. Our group danced a little and went to take pictures in the photobooth. After the dance, we all changed into more comfortable clothes, listened to good music and hung out. All together, the dance itself was kind of disappointing, but the memories and fun times that 4 shared with my friends was what made the night worth it.

It’s that time of year again, The State Fair! This exciting event that occurs over two weekends includes carnival rides, unique attractions, and famous deep-fried foods that the fair is known for. People come from all parts of North Carolina to experience the seasonal event, especially the thrilling rides like the Zipper, the Ferris Wheel, and the Ring of Fire. My favorite parts of the fair this year were the deep-fried Oreos and the State Fair Flyer. I went to the fair three times and walked around endlessly trying to win a prize and scope out the best rides. One night I was able to enjoy the fireworks with my friends and ended up staying until closing time. The State Fair is something I look forward to every year and I’m counting down the days until reopening in 2018!

Halloween has always seemed odd to me. It wasn’t really a celebrated holiday in Australia, where I lived, and therefore I never really grew up with the fondness for the ‘holiday’ as people over here did. This year I embraced it, dressed up, and went to a Halloween party with my friends. One thing I must say I enjoy about the holiday is dressing up. Halloween was originally meant for dressing scarily, and although it is now about dressing up as literally anything you want, I always find it amusing to see what costumes people have conjured up every year. On Monday night I dressed up as a fairy. Some of the best costumes I saw were Little Red Riding Hood, a unicorn, a SWAT officer, and an alien. So there is the one thing I think is acceptable about Halloween, dressing up. The act of going around to everyone’s houses and asking for free candy when you’re not a child is kind of just greedy in my opinion. It is just as easy to go to the store and buy a bag of candy for $2. Since I’ve gotten older, I have loved staying at home on Halloween night and handing out candy to all of the cute little kids wearing costumes. Last night however, we only got two trick-or-treaters. I don’t know if it was just the dynamics of our new neighborhood, or if less kids are venturing out to enjoy trick-or-treating, one of the fundamentals of the modern interpretation of the holiday, Halloween. Now onto Christmas, which is truly the most wonderful time of the year.

Fall Shows Cause Excitement All Over Green Hope Bilal Azzam, Staff Writer

It’s finally time for fall, which means scary movies and pumpkin spice lattes. However, those aren’t the only things that people are excited about. Many beloved shows are returning this fall, and people couldn’t be more excited. These shows include AMC’s The Walking Dead, and the Netflix Original Stranger Things.

Excitement for The Walking Dead has increased after its trailer release during the summer. The show is returning for an eighth season on October 22nd. Hannah Petersen, a sophomore in Green Hope, said “ I am excited and thrilled to see one of my favorite shows return for an eighth season. I miss seeing the thrilling action scenes.” Many fans are very enthusiastic about this thriller show, and are only expecting the best out of this new season. This is why so many videos and articles are on the internet about this show are being posted.

Stranger Things, a sci-fi show that has been taking over Netflix, is another big show that many students are excited about. It takes place in 1986, and centers around a group of kids who are forced to help their friend and save their family from a series of strange, paranormal activities. After an incredibly successful first season, Netflix

producers stated that the second season would be released on October 27th. Millions were excited to see their favorite kid cast return for more episodes.

These are only two of the many shows coming out this fall, and with October coming around the corner, horror and thriller shows are the only thing on people’s minds. The best thing to do on halloween is sit down with your friends,

Behind The Scenes of The Great Gatsby Cayley Ryan, Staff Writer & Dilal Azzam, Editor in-chief On November 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, Green Hope Theatre will be putting on a production of The Great Gatsby, based on the iconic novel. Falcon News Feed interviewed members of the cast and crew to learn more about their experience in creating the show and what to expect. Maya Schroder is the Assistant Director of the show, and has shared with us insight about the show and her role in it. Can you tell us more about the story of The Great Gatsby? Gatsby is about Nick Carraway and his journey to becoming a rich man. Along the way, he meets Jay Gatsby, who is utterly in love with Nick’s cousin, Daisy. It’s set in the 1920s, and the time period can be seen clearly in the story and our show, with the parties, flapper dresses, and Prohibition. The time period is also reflected in Nick’s desire to be rich. Why did Mr. Gorski choose this story? He chose it partially because he knew it was a popular story and very familiar and exciting for a lot of people. It’s a story that definitely makes you think and makes you realize that that time period was truly pathetic. People let their desires and obsessions consume their lives. That also serves as a message to our audience — understanding how your actions affect others.

What makes this show unique? One thing that we’ve worked on is, because it’s adapted from a well-known novel, there was a focus on textual analysis. We looked at characters indepth. Our dramaturg made sure all of the costumes are period-appropriate. A lot of times the plays are dramatic, and though this one is too, there are a lot of exciting moments and joy on the stage as well. What is the hardest part of of pulling off a show like this? Firstly, staying appropriate to the time period. It’s hard to find costumes, accessories, and props that all fit what was appropriate [for the 1920s]. Secondly, Gatsby is a lot more well-known than many of the plays we do. Lots of people expect to see a certain thing, especially after the Baz Luhrmann movie. Making ours unique while satisfying the audience is definitely a challenge. Tell me more about your role as assistant director. What are your favorite parts of the job? During the day-to-day rehearsal process, I sit with Gorski as we block the show. We discuss a lot on the side about how we want to portray these characters and the attitudes we see from them. I also look at costumes and makeup and make sure it fits Gorski’s vision for the show. My favorite thing I’ve done so far is getting to block a scene; it’s really cool whenever we run through that scene to see 11 something I created now on the stage.

What is the hardest part of your job? The commitment is a lot more than I’ve had for most shows before. As Assistant Director I’m called every single day for every single rehearsal. I have to be paying attention throughout that entire rehearsal. When ensemble or lead have a break to work on scenes, Gorski and I don’t get that break. How has working in the arts department and in the show changed you? Working in arts has given me a really great group of friends that I can trust and as a whole, I feel like I’ve grown a lot emotionally as a person. I’m more confident, I’m more empathetic. This show, because it’s my first chance to be Assistant Director, gave me a leadership position i’ve wanted for a while. It’s a really great experience to work with peers in completely different way. What advice would you give to any younger kids who are considering doing theater at Green Hope? I’d say sign up for the classes and join the club. It’s the best introduction you can get to our program. Don’t be afraid to audition — it’s scary to go up on stage, but we’re all here to support you and we truly want everyone to succeed. Anything else you’d like to share about Gatsby? The cast and crew of this show is one of the most dedicated I’ve ever had the privilege to work with. There’s a whole new level of dedication to characters and positions. For that reason, I have complete confidence that the show is going to be spectacular.

Too Cold Too Soon…Kinda Erin McIndoe, Staff Writer Fall is finally here and it seems as though it took forever to come back. Around this time of the year is when jeans, flannel, and bean boots come back into style along with pumpkin spice everything and of course, Halloween. What many of us tend to forget about living in North Carolina is that it will become cold at some point. North Carolina is known for having brisk days in October where the high is just a mere 82 degrees in the afternoon, this weather sounds a bit warm for typical fall weather, but that’s just North Carolina. Eventually, we will reach weather that dips below 50 degrees, so here are some easy ways to fight off the cold.

for school, or anywhere else, your car is nice and toasty the whole way there. Take these tips and get ready for the cold that could never come, but it is always better to be safe than sorry. So bundle up for our “fall” and “winter” because it could be snowing and 75 degrees in the same day.

Start to break out those winter clothes. Open up that box of sweaters and out of date but comfortable Ugg boots to bundle you up. Bean boots and fuzzy socks are always a good option in the cold. Stop and drop everything and make sure you have some hot chocolate at your house. Nothing warms you up like a warm cup of hot chocolate at any time of day. Make sure you have marshmallows and whip cream to top it all off. Start up some bonfires with friends. Gather around your friends and family in blankets with s’mores ready to go. A good bonfire is a good way to spend time in the nice crisp weather without being too cold. If you are too lazy to bring a jacket to school, bring a blanket. Bringing a blanket lets you snuggle up during class and warm up your entire body. Make sure your car has a good heating system and start your car and turn on the heat before you actually need to leave (assuming it’s safe to do so). Let your car run for it to warm up, so when it is time to leave

Soccer Demolishes Jaguars in Dominant Victory Brandon Morton, Sports Writer Monday night, the Green Hope Men’s soccer team traveled to Athens Drive in a crucial Tri-6 conference match. This was a big game as the season is coming to an end and they have a small advantage over Panther Creek for the Tri-6 title. The team showed up to Athens angry as they ended up rolling past the Jags 6-1. The team’s offense was on full display last night. Senior Connor Brookshire started the night with 2 goals. After a strong play by Dylan Enseling, Sammy Durand was able to score one in sloppy conditions. The rest of the half ended up with two more Green Hope goals, one by senior Mason Phinney and one by junior Dylan Enseling. This helped the Falcons go into the half with a 5-1 lead on the road in wet conditions. The second half slowed down, and only one goal was scored in the half. The only goal in the half was one by Phinney for his second of the night. When asked about the performance, he said, “The team as a whole played with a lot of energy and we finished the chances we created.” The senior had a great game going into his last few regular season matches of his career. The team is now in full form going into the end of the regular season. They have not lost in 15 games, playing without captain Tony Andreini for 6 of those, who has been out with injury. Mason Phinney said, “The team has been improving a lot recently, we have been getting much better going into playoffs in a few weeks. Hopefully we can win states on how we are playing right now.” The team plays again Wednesday night at Riverside. Make sure to cheer on the #17 team in the country!

Tennis Dismantles Athens Bradley Stewart, Sports The Green Hope women’s tennis team, currently ranked number one in the triangle area, dominated their opponents once again yesterday. Athens Drive was no match for the plethora of talent that the Falcons possess, falling 9-0 to Green Hope for the second time this season. The win moved to the girls to 9-0 on the season and 7-0 in conference play. Green Hope now holds a three game lead on first place in the Tri-6, almost ensuring that the defending 4A state runner-ups will win the conference. The Falcons continued their historic season, as they have now lost an unprecedented one set in 136 tries. Here is a run-down of each girls’ individual results from the match last night: Singles: Anna Rico won 6-0, 6-0 Rhindha Sudhini won 6-0, 6-0 Reilly Major won 6-0, 6-0 Nanami Shiibashi won 6-0, 6-0

Alka Tomar won 6-0, 6-0 Amanda Martin won 6-0, 6-0 Doubles: Cynthia Xiao and Sophia Gray won 8-0 Sarah Liao and Jenna Dick won 8-2 Katelyn Cashion and Elizabeth Penn won 8-0

Because they have lost a combined one set all year, Green Hope has won all 81 of their matches. What makes this already impressive feat even more spectacular is that they do not have a senior on their roster. The team has some experience from their run to the state championship a year ago, but one can only imagine how superior the girls will be after another year of experience. Green Hope has the potential to return to the state championship, but they can not overlook their next opponent in Riverside. The Wednesday match against Riverside is at home, so come on out and support the Falcons.

Falcons Cross Country Crushes Records Brandon Morton, Sports Writer Saturday morning, Green Hope cross country senior Peyton Barish made school history. The senior ran a time of 15:18 breaking his own school record, which helped him finish 9th in the Race of Champions at the Great American XC Festival. Barish did not only have a great day, but the whole team did. Overall, the team finished second, only 25 points back from #1 ranked Loudoun Valley.

performance this weekend. Barish will be running 100% in Manhattan and is hoping to possibly break another Green Hope record. Go out and congratulate the cross country team after an all-around great weekend!

The order in which the top seven finished was, Peyton Barish (15:18, Ninth Place), Ian Delgado (15:51, 28th place), Finn McBride (15:51, 29th Place), Ares Epps (16:00, 40th place), Ryan Kemper (16:02, 44th place), Reed Blackman (16:22, 77th place), and Daniel Vo (16:24, 79th place). This was the greatest performance from a school from North Carolina in the history of the Great American XC Festival. Barish, who had hyped up this day for weeks, lived up to the hype on this legendary day. The senior tweeted on September 18th, “October 7th boutta be the fastest day in XC history.” Barish said, “People saw my tweet and were sort of mad because as a team we had not proved ourselves yet until Saturday, but before the race I knew that my fitness was there to run a fast time.” When asked about how he called this performance from weeks ago, he stated, “We did a 6 mile progression run and I finished the last 3 miles in 15:10, so I knew I had the capability to run fast at Great American.” The team travels to Manhattan this weekend for the Manhattan High School Invitational, where the nation’s top teams will be running. The boys are hoping to take home the win after their strong

Falcons Fly by Heritage Sean Peterson, Sports Writer Green Hope volleyball dismantled Heritage in the second round of the NCHSAA playoffs. They swept all three sets with ease and now look onto the third where they will play Broughton. “We have to focus on keeping a consistent serve and serve receive because if we have that we can stay in system and I think we are impossible to beat when we stay in the system.” said Erin McIndoe. The team was led by senior, Amy Zhang, who had countless hits leading to numerous points. The team had great set up plays on Tuesday night and look to continue it through the next few rounds.“We hope to repeat and win the state championship”, said Erin McIndoe. Make sure to fill up the Falcon Nest on Thursday at 6 when the girls take on Broughton High School.

Falcon Football Fly’s by the Pride Peyton Barish, Sports Section Editor Friday November 17th, 2017 was one of the biggest days in Green Hope football history. The Falcons had received a first-round bye after dominating the Tri-6 conference, and running the table after a heartbreaking loss to Sanderson. This season the Falcons have a real shot to match the phenomenal season that the 2005 Green Hope football team had. Green Hope came into this game with a lot of confidence after beating Leesville earlier in the season 28-21. The game was nowhere near as close as the Falcons gashed the Pride’s defense scoring 42 points to Leesville’s measly 23. The scoring was opened by Leesville Road who scored two straight rushing touchdowns taking the lead 13-0. Blake Watson made sure the Falcons wouldn’t be scoreless for long, returning the kickoff back to Leesville’s 17. Jordyn Adams took a screen pass to the end zone cutting Leesville’s lead to 6. The Falcons scored again on a 40 yard bomb to Jordyn Adams from Willie Taylor taking a permanent lead for the rest of the game. Watson capped off the half with a 26 yard run off of a jet sweep that almost resulted in him being taken down in the backfield. After being down by 13 points early in the half, the Falcons had scored 20 unanswered points, and only continued their run in the second half. Second half scoring opened with a Justen Grant catch and run giving Taylor his third and final touchdown of the night. After that the Falcons running backs put on a show running all over Leesville’s defense. Jaquel Watkins and Dylan Washington both scored rushing touchdowns to close out the scoring for Green Hope, which showcased an all-around effort on both sides of the ball. Paul Robinson added to his ridiculous tackle total with 12 total tackles and one

tackle for a loss. Andrew Becvar added two momentum-killing sacks and defensive captain Ethan Melton added a one-handed interception in traffic to stop a Pride drive in its tracks. Quarterback Willie Taylor said about the Falcons effort, “We came out a little flat, but once we realized this could be the last game of our season we really turned it up a notch.” The Falcons have a tough matchup against a hot Garner team who has a storied history in the state playoffs. Taylor believes the Falcons will need to “execute because the only way we will lose is if we beat ourselves.” A state quarterfinal win would be the second in school history, and most likely result in a matchup against Wake Forest, one of the top teams in the country. Taylor feels a little pressure, but nothing he hasn’t dealt with before, and like he said “it’s good pressure.” Come out Friday November 24th to see the Falcon’s high-octane offense take on the Trojans from Garner for a spot in the state semi-finals.

Golf Drives Past Panther Creek Kohl Abrams, Sports Writer Yesterday the Tri-6 golf teams hit the links in the conference championship at Pine Hollow Country Club in Clayton NC. The team came in 2nd overall only behind Athens Drive who was carried by Jenny Chang who recorded a state record 61. The Green Hope team posted a score of 237 with Lauren Nee (75) and Halynn Lee (79) leading the way for the falcons. The 237 was good enough to blow away PC who recorded a poor 260 who didn’t even have a single girl break 80. The golf team helped secure the third Fight for 55 point and have had a great season so far. Now the team’s focus will be gearing up for the regional tournament, and looking forward to competing for the state championship. Congratulations ladies and good luck at the regional tournament.

Wildfires Hit the Golden State Alex Price, Staff Writer

This is the time of year where the East Coast gets hurricanes and the West Coast gets wildfires. It happens every year. This year, however, the twentytwo fires that broke out across California were especially dangerous, and they killed over thirty people. There are over 300 people missing and entire cities, including Calistoga, were evacuated. 8,000 firefighters fought the fires and the fires are still affecting the citizens of California. These types of natural disasters are happening more and more frequently with Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico having just suffered some of the worst hurricanes ever. We as a country and as a world need to do more to help the victims of these various natural disasters. We know that there are going to be hurricanes in the southeast. We know there are going to be wildfires on the West Coast. We know where these types of disasters occur. There is something we can do to try to prevent them or help the victims. While there is FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, they just help people after the disaster has happened. We need something that will help before the disaster happens.

We need precautions that can slow down and stop natural disasters. One way to do this is to look at the trends in natural disasters, where hurricanes most frequently take place, what California needs to stop wildfires, and act on these trends. We know California will experience wildfires during the fall. We should equip the firefighters with additional water supplies so that they are able to stop the fires with minimum damage. Obviously, this won’t stop fires from happening but if firefighters are equipped with the resources they need to end them quickly, there won’t be nearly as many people that are affected by it. The same type of thing can be done for hurricane damage. If we know that Southern Texas experiences dreadful flooding due to hurricanes, buildings should be built on higher ground. Dams should block the areas that are known for flooding. There should be proper shelters built in areas that are out of the potential flood zones. There should be transportation systems that are set aside for people that are in evacuation zones. There should be more precautions taken. This isn’t a perfect system. There’s no way to stop all damage done by natural disasters. This type of system would cost money. Some people wouldn’t like this because this might require an increase in taxes or money being removed from other programs but some things have to take priority and ensuring that people’s lives remain intact should be the government’s priority at all times because that is their first responsibility.

Diwali Festival Celebrates Light Sonia Rao, Opinion Editor Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights that is celebrated once every year in the fall. This year, the holiday lands today, on October 19th. It traditionally celebrates the victory of light over darkness, good over evil. The festival is celebrated in many ways, including lighting lamps and candles, setting off fireworks, exchanging sweets, and decorating doorsteps with rangoli decorations made up of colored powder. Countries all over the world celebrate Diwali, including India, Nepal, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Suriname, Fiji, Guyana, Malaysia, and Myanmar.

below with their respective groups. When asked about why she thought festivals like Cary Diwali were important, Preeti said “I think it is great that we celebrate different cultures because we can enjoy various aspects of their cultures while learning to respect them as well. It also helps us be united because understanding each other’s cultures brings us closer together. It helps us appreciate different cultural groups.” Diwali is a time for setting aside hate and bringing people together with love, light, and joy. Happy Diwali!

This past weekend, the Koka Booth Amphitheatre hosted a festival called Cary Diwali to celebrate this aspect of Indian culture. The festival was a culmination of food, dancing, singing, art, music, and more. During the daytime, booths populated the Amphitheatre, selling Indian food, clothes, jewelry, and offering henna designs. NYC Terrorist Attack Aftermath Bianca Serafano, Staff Writer On Tuesday, October 31, a twenty-nine-year-old man drove a rented pickup truck into a path of bicyclists in New York City near the World Trade Center. Eight people were killed and about eleven people were injured. Sources say that the suspect is known as Sayfullo Habibulaevic Saipov, a man from Uzbekistan who has been living in the US since 2010. A law enforcement official stated that near the truck, there was a note revealing that ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack. This attack is being investigated by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force as an act of terrorism. Twenty four hours following the attack the suspect appeared in court. At the court appearance, he was in a wheelchair since he was injured during the attack. According to federal court papers, Mr. Saipov freely spoke and ignored his right to avoid incriminating himself. It was recorded that he said that he planned the attack for a year, he chose to do the attack on Halloween because he believed it would be more crowded on the streets. He wanted to target the Brooklyn Bridge as well and he was inspired by violent propaganda videos regarding Abu-Bakr alBaghdadi. After the attack, the police have decided to increase the number of officers at transport areas in New York. Also, there will be uniformed and plain-clothed police officers surrounding the area when New York’s marathon takes place on Sunday.

Election Day Results Alex Price, Staff Writer The first election in the Trump presidency took place on November 7, and some of the results shocked the political world. From the first transgender lawmaker in the country being elected to new governors for both Virginia and New Jersey. The day was a win for some and a loss for others. Curiosity surrounded how Trump’s presidency would affect the political climate going forward. The biggest news of the night was the new governors in both Virginia and New Jersey. In New Jersey, Chris Christie was replaced by Democratic candidate Philip Murphy after 8 years of governing the state. Murphy defeated Christie’s Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno. Democrats also took a majority of the seats in the State Senate and the State Assembly. Virginia ushered in a new governor in Democrat Ralph Northam. Virginia also elected the first openly transgender lawmaker in American history, Danica Roem, who defeated Robert Marshall, Virginia’s selfproclaimed “chief homophobe.” In the political world, this election was either a sign of hope or an omen of fear. Democrats were happy to receive their first win since Trump became president. Republicans saw this as a sign that next year at the midterm elections, they need to find a new way to reach voters.

HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH! Angelica Edwards, Student Life Editor What’s it like to be Hispanic/Latinx at Green Hope?

The following is a preview for an upcoming spread concerning what it’s like to be Hispanic/Latinx at Green Hope. The full feature will include various perspectives from Hispanic/Latinx students who share unique cultures and experiences that make them proud to be who they are. The purpose of the feature is to inform the student body about our experiences as a culture and as individuals so that our fellow peers are better informed about who we are as a group of people. As someone who is hispanic, being at Green Hope can have it’s ups and downs. Hispanics account for 5.1% of the total population of Green Hope, meaning it’s difficult to find other hispanics in the hallways or activities I participate in. I’m the only hispanic on my softball team. I’m one of a handful of hispanics in the marching band. Most of the time, I’m the only hispanic in my class. I miss being exposed to my culture and I am disappointed that I haven’t been able to share it as much as I would like with my peers. How do hispanics such as myself find their voice in a school where we are not even close to being the majority? I am not the only one who echoes my concerns, senior Corina Matos and other students I spoke to agreed that being hispanic at Green Hope is challenging because we struggle to identify with our peers and teachers, “I think being hispanic at Green Hope can be hard. I look around in a classroom and I don’t see people who look like me and can possibly share the same culture as me. And it’s hard if you don’t really identify with teachers because I feel like it’s easier to learn from someone

you relate too and someone you can admire and I haven’t really found that. That can be really frustrating.” Sentiments like this are echoed by other students, Adriana Hernandez says, “You don’t get to know many people that speak spanish with you so it’s just kinda hard. Even if [someone] thinks you're hispanic they’re gonna assume that your Mexicanthere’s a difference. There's not a majority of hispanics [at Green Hope] so I don’t really get to embrace that culture most of the time. I kind of keep it dormant.”

Even though being at Green Hope can be a challenging avenue to express our culture, hispanics are proud of who they are and stick together, “Venezuelan people are kind, their passionate, their helpers, their listeners. They are very proud people and I think that I try to bring that with me wherever I go because I think it’s so important to be so open and I think it’s just home, it’s where I’m from. Even though there’s so much political unrest people still know what they want and they’re gonna fight for it and I feel that definitely something I can relate too because I’m a very ambitious and persistent person.” -Corina Matos. “I think that when you’re hispanic you’re not just Dominican, you’re apart of this latino community and you’re just a small part of it whether you’re from the Dominican Republic or Venezuela [or wherever]”-Roslyn Reynoso, Green Hope Senior.
