DALAL AZZAM Three years ago, I walked into Leadership in Media not knowing what to expect. The class had just finished transitioning from the printed Green Hope Gazette to the digital Falcon News Feed, and we started growing the website since. Throughout the years, staff have joined and left the class, each one adding more to the website. Going from a staff writer, to news editor, to now Editor-in-Chief, I have watched the Feed grow and expand to all areas of media. I may be biased when I say this, but I do believe that this year’s staff has been the best one yet. It has been a privilege to work alongside with everyone in the staff and all the administration that support our class. Everyday for the past year, I walk into first period feeling proud of everyone in the room and feeling honored to have such an amazing staff. Throughout second semester this year, we have come together to compile the highlights of this year, both inside and outside of the class. We hope you enjoy this year’s issue of the senior magazine, and thank you for a memorable year!

Is Cold Water at Green Hope a Social Construct?

New Sports Banners Spark Twitter Controversy

Green Hope Walks Out

All That We Share

From the journey of the coldest water producing fountain on campus all the way to the diversity in the realms of Green Hope High School shown through “All That We Share. The Falcon News Feed has provided a platform ranging from satirical investigative journalism to the things that make our school so exceptional. Throughout the year, our feed provided introspection on controversial issues like the sports banners causing twitter users to bicker amongst each other, the Green Hope walkout to stand in solidarity with those affected by gun violence, and providing a comments section to give students a safe space to voice their opinions. The best part of the website has been that it has given students the right to think, imagine, and create. Give opinions, offer advice, and make a difference on their school campus.

Theatre

The Green Hope Theatre Department staged some unbelievable shows in the 2017-2018 school year. The shows this year included the Fall play The Great Gatsby, the senior play, House of Cards, the Spring musical, Sideshow and a first-time second musical for the year, The Last Five Years. Creatively built sets paired with fantastic and talented casts and crew made this year truly one for the books. Although there is no saying what productions will be produced next year, there is no doubt that the Green Hope Theatre department will outdo themselves.

Visual Arts

Visuals at Green Hope began the year with a 1st Place State Fair award and continued to win throughout the year at shows across the state and nation. Students worked with guest artists to learn about watercolor, encaustic, collage and sculpture. Sculptor Bryant Holsenbeck helped us create our new addition to the school, our falcon. The NAHS added murals around school and held our Art Show with the Chorus concert. While the year was successful, we will miss Mrs. Prichard who retired. Mr. Slater Mapp will join the department as our new art teacher for 2018-2019.

Music

The Green Hope Band had a remarkable season performing their show “Unchained in multiple regionals up and down the East Coast. Most notably, they received a high score in Atlanta- solidifying their place in the finals for the first time. The Indoor Percussion and Winter Guard groups both participated in the WGI World Championships and were finalists for the third year. Three ensembles debuted: Concert, Symphonic, and Wind which featured many guest composers and musicians.

Valedictorian

Cayley Ryan is the Class of 2018 Valedictorian. She will be attending Duke University this fall and is planning to major in Neurolinguistics which is an interdisciplinary major between neuroscience and linguistics, and a minor in math. When asked who has been the most influential person in her life she easily chose her mom. “She was always the archetype of a strong female and was always there when I needed her. She has had many fun experiences while at Green Hope and her advice to the incoming freshman class is to find one thing that you look forward to every single day- whether that is your favorite teacher, a class you love, or the kid you sit next to who makes you laugh. She wishes she could list off all of her teachers because they were the most kind and incredible people. They have always done their best to care for students to make class engaging. If she could choose just one thing to leave to students it her ability to just go for things. She never said no to something she thought she wasn’t good enough for it, because there is always the opportunity to grow.

Jessica Yang

Salutatorian

Jessica Yang is the Class of 2018 Salutatorian. She will be attending Duke University in the fall and her major is not completely decided right now, but now she is planning to major in electrical computer engineering. If she had to pick one person who has been the most influential person in her life she would choose her mom. She says her mom is the biggest enablers in her life. Jessica worked incredibly hard in high school, but says if she had to give one piece of advice to the incoming freshman class it would be to not stress out about GPAs and class rank and take classes that are going to be fun for you and are passionate about. She will miss many things about Green Hope, but what she will miss are her friends. She walked in not knowing many and is now leaving with some of the best people in her life. With all the knowledge she has been able to obtain while here she would say that if she could pass down something it would be to stick to your own values even when faced with the idea of doing badly on something because of it.

OUTSTANDING SENIORS Julia Parks

Julia will tell you she’s not an artist, despite her insane talent in the area. Yet, she’s one of the most creative students I’ve met. She blends her talents with her interests. Julia’s interests are in the realm of science and math, and her art is reflective of these interests. Her desire to pursue a career that will continue to intertwine the two is part of what makes her an outstanding student. Julia wants to help others, and feels the best way she can do that is by combining her talents and creating something useful. Julia likes the challenge of thinking about things differently than societythe literally thinking outside of the box. This approach to the world of STEM is one I believe will take her far. I admire Julia’s drive and determination to be successful, doing whatever she needs to get herself there. Julia is also witty and has a great sense of humor to boot. One day Julia, can I be as cool as you? - Ms. Weeks

Gigi Juras

Gigi Juras is an amazing young woman. I am not sure how she balances all that she does at Green Hope and in the community, but she does so with fidelity. She has taken many challenging AP courses and has been tremendously successful in all of them. In addition to being academically successful, she is well-rounded in extra-curricular activities. She is a member the dance team, participates in drama performances, is a member of the Chorus Ensemble, and choreographs the spring musicals. She is mature beyond her years and represents Green Hope well. Her kind heart, compassion for others, and drive and enthusiasm for everything she does will propel her to success in all that she does in her life. I look forward to hearing about all of her accomplishments over the next few years at Boston University and beyond. I have no doubt that she will do amazing things in her lifetime! - Ms. Collins

Lucas Laszacs

Lucas Laszacs epitomizes athletic and academic excellence at Green Hope. While competing on the Wrestling team, he became a State Qualifier, earned three varsity letters, and finished with a top-three win percentage each of the past two seasons. He also served as team captain for both his Junior and Senior campaigns. Lucas doesn’t shy away from an academic challenge either, having taken ten AP courses and earning a 4.50 GPA over the past four years. He’s served as a Teacher Cadet in one of Green Hopes ID-Moderate Special Education classrooms and volunteers with Unified Champion Schools, Green Hope Unified Track and the Special Olympics. Lucas was recently awarded the Coach Bob Pittard Scholarship and will attend North Carolina State University to study Microbiology in the fall. As a Coach and an Educator, I can only wish that world was filled with more young people like Lucas. -Coach Williams

Taylor Brown

Taylor has a passion for working with people, imparting her wisdom, yet always open to learning something new. Her desire for service to others and dedication to excellence in everything she does, makes her an outstanding senior. I have had the pleasure of knowing Taylor since her freshman year. I have served as her administrator, mentor, andnow see her as one of my work daughters. Taylors is the definition of a quiet storm. She is a solid student, an outstanding athlete, and a kind soul. Taylor is warm, compassionate, friendly, and witty. Her character is marked with integrity and a solid work ethic. She is truly a consummate student-athlete and has been a joy to know. I wish her all the best as she continues her education at East Carolina. -Mrs. Cush

Maya Schroder

Maya is one of the most exceptional students I have encountered in my 15 years of teaching. She has a keen interest in and talent for theater, fine arts, and literature. Maya is a perceptive, sharp, quick individual with a high aptitude for analysis and evaluation. She is driven to understand the reasoning behind behavior and decisions whether it is in a psychology case study, a character study for a production, or the motives of a fictional character in a piece of literature. She’s an active, outgoing presence in class with a great sense of humor. Maya has demonstrated excellence in all that she does. Her endless curiosity, combined with her willingness to take risks truly make her an outstanding senior- Mrs. Pyland

Zara Khan

Zara is not shy about sharing her beliefs and ideals. When she is passionate about a cause, she devotes her time and energy into making it right. She works to promote social justice and help those who might otherwise go unnoticed. Beyond this, she is a genuine, kind, and honest person. This year she has shared stories of her culture and her religion with me and opened my eyes to ideas I might not have known. She is witty, capable, and strong. Her infectious, positive attitude and smile bring levity and balance to her passion and desires to affect change in the world. I believe Zara will do big things in this world. I look forward to learning of her many successes.-Mr. Kesterson

Dylan Heneghan

Dylan is far and away the brightest, most talented student I have ever taught. He is quick to grasp concepts. He is a tireless, natural born leader, who consistently leads the class in the quality of work that is required. Outside the classroom, he has risen to state level office in DECA as a regional Vice President. Through his leadership, he built the school chapter to over 400 members, the largest in the state. He has won numerous state and international DECA awards. As his advisor, I have witnessed his leadership firsthand. Recently, Dylan added another accomplishment to his list. He was elected a National Vice President of DECA representing the Southern Region of the United States. Congratulations! -Mr. Ruckert

Samer Issa

I have had the opportunity to watch Samer grow from a shy, timid freshman to a strong, charismatic, and talented leader in the band program. I placed him into our advanced ensemble as a freshman because I needed more trombones players. He was reluctant and doubted his abilities at first, but accepted and met the challenge. Since then, he has continued in the same ambitious way. As a senior, he was the brass captain, leading 50 of his classmates, selected to be a member of the 2018 US Army All-American Marching Band. Yet, he always stayed humble and gracious. I can say with absolute certainty that our band is better because of Samer. His legacy in our school and band program that will be felt for many future years. - Mr. Myers

Kelly Wiles

Kelly Wiles is a wonderful young woman. who performs above and beyond expectations. She is insightful, wise, and mature- a pleasure to teach and get to know. She is always respectful to her teachers and her peers Her respect and kindness, more than any academic accolade or natural intelligence, make her deserving of recognition. Kelly came to class greeting everyone with a sincere smile. Her positive attitude and worth ethic spread to those around her. She dedicates herself to the things she is most passionate about - including volleyball teams and clubs. She is passionate about helping others. The world could use more quiet kindness and people like Kelly. - Ms. Snider

Beyond his leadership roles, Matthew shows his care and concern for others daily. Matthew never ceases to find ways to help and uplift others. I am honored to have had the opportunity to work with Matthew for four years. He has made a lasting impact at Green Hope and on me, and he fully embodies the characteristics of an outstanding senior. I am confident that Matthew will continue to lead and inspire others well beyond Green Hope, and I am excited for what the future has in store for him. - Mr. McIntyre

Angelica Edwards

I first met Angelica as a student in Honors Creative Writing II. She was an inventive and talented writer. Two pieces that semester that I particularly loved: one was a hilarious skit about Martians hosting a cooking show on “Earthling cuisine,” while the other was a heartfelt story about depression and how it robs its victims of life’s “color.” These two pieces speak to the wide range of Angelica’s personality. She is a person of depth and substance--never one to take herself too seriously, but always full of curiosity, warmth, and empathy. These same qualities were evident during Angelica’s time in my AP English III class. She was an insightful and adept reader and writer, and she could boldly advocate for her ideas and the issues that mattered to her, but just as impressive was the fact that she made a point of actively reaching out to shy and struggling classmates. She knew how to listen as well as talk. Angelica embodies some of my very favorite qualities--she is smart, compassionate, and brave. It was a pleasure to be her teacher, and I can’t wait to see what she’ll do next. - Ms. Nation

Zashawn McCullum

Zayshawn McCollum hands down has to be one of the most driven, positive and kind students I have ever had the pleasure to interact with at GHHS. Anyone who has spent any time in his presence can’t deny that is energy is truly infectious. When he walks into a room, his energy is definitely felt, his stature and smile are hard to miss. If one is fortunate enough to spend any time with him, ultimately it is his heart that will grab you. I have witnessed him serve as a mediator between feuding friends, approaching it in a fair way, yet not afraid to hold his friends accountable to be better people and kinder to each other. I believe that he has such a bright future, we will all need sunglasses as he takes his place in the Universe. Zayshawn is truly the type of young man I am honored to refer to as a “work son”, his parents truly deserve a high five for raising such a kind and decent human being. - Mrs. Cush

Luke Nguyen

If Luke could carry the weight of the world on his shoulders, he would- sometimes he tries. Luke’s selflessness and empathy have always made him stand out. Luke shares his efforts out of sincere interest in making wherever he is a better place. His classmates enjoy working with him in groups because he is as enthusiastic about their ideas as his own. Luke leads by example. Students were willing to join him as President of the Rotary Interact Club weekly classroom sweeping. His influence lingers across campus as students pass a tree he planted as part of Rotary International. He served on Green Hope’s diversity panel to discuss racial tensions and help teachers better understand students from different backgrounds. He has volunteered for Meals for Hope, Adopt-AHighway, Hygiene for the Homeless, and spruced up PTA headquarters and Hemlock Bluffs with landscaping assistance. His efforts reach across borders by assisting with Rotary’s Global Run 4 Water event. As long as there are people who need help, Luke will enthusiastically share his time and effort. -Mrs. Mackey

Chloe Washabaugh

Chloe Washabaugh is an incredible student with an admirable, idealistic attitude. She is a dreamer who hopes for and looks forward to a world that will be better tomorrow than it is today. To hear her speak about what she looks forward to is inspirational. She continually seeks information about the world and is curious about events and issues. Chloe reflects and concludes with overwhelming positivity and dedication to making a difference. She listens to her peers with empathy and an inquisitive mind, seeking to understand where they might be coming from. Chloe’s voice and reasoning is refreshingly intelligent and her heart is remarkably open. I expect Chloe will do amazing things in society and be a successful person. -Mrs. Hill

Peyton Barish

Peyton Barish is an exceptional young man- a great student, a tremendous athlete, and an extraordinary leader. Peyton displays an impressive curiosity and understanding of material. As a member of the Falcon News Feed Peyton he has served as a section editor and has written numerous thoughtful and insightful pieces. Outside of the classroom, Peyton has rewritten Green Hope track and cross-country record books. He is an individual state champion and has been a part of three team state championships. I have no doubt Peyton will continue to excel as he moves on to NC State next year. As an NCSU alum, I very much look forward to cheering Peyton on for the first time wearing the Wolfpack Red & White. -Coach Fegeley

Cole Ammerman deserves this honor for many reasons. He brings a brightness to any environment for his fellow students and teachers. Shilong Dai

Shilong Dai is not only does well academically, but he is well rounded. He is a leader among his peers and continues to amaze me with the compassion he shows for his fellow classmates and teachers. Shilong pursues learning and is committed to all subjects he studies. He goes above and beyond for enrichment or general curiosity. He is one of my top performing students in AP Physics 2 and has a complete and thorough understanding of the material. Shilong is a hard-working, independent and would rather figure things out for himself, but knows when to ask for clarification or help when necessary. He has been pleasure to teach this year. I look forward to seeing how he will impact the world in the future. - Mrs. Siebert

Catherine Holbrook

I have had the fortune to coach Catherine the past two years in cross country and she was my student this spring. So much about Catherine truly impresses me. She jumped right into the cross country program as a junior and was very successful as a runner, but even more importantly she instantly became a great teammate. As a senior she became a team captain and helped lead the team to a 2nd consecutive state runner-up finish. For the past four years I have watched every home basketball game Catherine has played. It was a joy to watch her become the fiery competitor with endless energy. With her numerous athletic accomplishments, Catherine has proven to be one of the most successful multi-sport athletes ever at Green Hope. - Coach Miragliuolo
