Falkirk Community Trust is a not-for-profit organisation part funded by Falkirk Council. We strive to support community aspirations, deliver inspiring services and ensure that the experiences we offer provide equality of opportunity and access for all.

407,333 visits to our website – 200% up on last year

People are fitter and healthier, more people are active and opportunities are accessible for everyone.

927, 074 issues made to 25,976 active library borrowers – representing 17% of the population 4 star visitor attraction accreditation achieved at Kinneil Museum for the first time 717, 826 admissions of young people to our services, programmes, classes or workshops – an increase of almost 40,000 admissions on last year’s figures.

People are happier, more creative and we nurture potential for personal success and wellbeing. People benefit from life-long learning opportunities, and we help them to make a social and economic contribution. People are involved in caring for and promoting the area’s heritage and environment to inspire others to live, work in and visit the area. We are a strong, sustainable organisation that is valued by customers and stakeholders, and are a contributor to area wide objectives.

our services • Worked with Scottish Canals to scope a placement to develop community engagement

Arts During 2012/2013 our arts team: • Welcomed over 3,000 audience members to our 3rd Festival of Silent Cinema at the Hippodrome • Delivered 67 live performances in FTH • Provided music tuition for over 5,000 children in conjunction with the Scottish Government’s Youth Music Initiative Our venues and events: • New digital projector installed in the Hippodrome • Participation in the national ‘Hansel of Film’ project • Received a 4 star review from the Scotsman for the Park Gallery’s exhibition Reggie’s Roller Palace What’s next? • The highly acclaimed 5th nationwide ARTIST ROOMS tour comes to the Park Gallery from August 2013 • With a lead artist in place for the Denny Town Centre regeneration project, we’ll start community consultation for the design of the new square • FTH café bar will receive a refurbishment

Heritage During 2012/2013 our heritage team: • Relocated the tearoom from the Stables into Callendar House, raising visitor numbers and income • Took in a number of new acquisitions including a Roman copper terminal and a brooch found to the south of the Roman fort at Castlecary

Our venues and events: • Opened a new garden space, Cultivating Earth, in the historic walled garden at Callendar House • Kinneil Museum was awarded 4 star status from VisitScotland in their quality assurance for ‘excellent’ service to customers • Callendar House hosted filming for ITV’s Britain’s Best Bakery What’s next? • We’re planning our WW1 centenary commemorations for 2014 • Our family events programme will be developed to include a Christmas interpretation by Falkirk Youth Theatre • We’ll be installing an exhibition of our collections in Forth Valley Royal Hospital

Libraries During 2012/2013 our libraries team: • Launched a brand new eBook service • Secured funding to introduce a new digital magazines service • Upgraded 70 public access PCs Our venues and events: • Saw 9,577 participants in children’s activities in libraries – an increase of 28% • Held successful author events for Crimeweek, World Book Night and Book Week • Welcomed over 6,000 new members What’s next? • Denny Library will move to a temporary location in the early part of 2015 ahead of a new library opening in 2016 • A project to replace our library management system will be underway soon • We’ll continue to focus on digital developments in all our libraries


Fitness During 2012/2013 our fitness team: • Introduced the popular Les Mills classes across our three centres • Won two NHS Scotland Physical Activity and Health Alliance awards for our Step Forth programmes • Reviewed gym memberships to include access to neighbourhood sports centres to give our customers more choice Our venues and events: • The 10th Big Fit Walk was launched in March • Active Forth’s Zumba Gold ladies performed at the World Congress for Active Ageing • Invested £150,000 in refurbishments, including an extension to the Mariner Centre gym What’s next? • We hope to add Body Balance to the Les Mills classes we currently have available • Reviewing the potential for developing new sites in the area • Working in partnership with the NHS on their ‘Living It Up’ initiative

Sport During 2012/2013 our sport team: • Developed the ‘Going For Gold’ accreditation initiative, encouraging primary school pupils to lead health and active lives • Introduced new water confidence classes for pre-school children • Delivered ‘Sporting Choice’ – a programme aimed at secondary school pupils at risk of becoming NEET (not in education, employment or training)

Our venues and events: • 6992 places were booked on our holiday programmes • Many facilities received refurbishment and new equipment including Grangemouth Sports Complex, the Mariner Centre and Denny Football Centre • For the first time we hosted pre-season football at Grangemouth Stadium, including Hibs Vs Rapid Bucharest What’s next? • We’re planning for the celebrations as the Queen’s Baton Relay makes its way round Scotland in 2014 • We’re expanding our pre-school programmes and establishing two new Mini Gym venues at Denny and Stenhousemuir Neighbourhood Sports Centres • Refurbishment of the dryside changing rooms at Grangemouth Sports Complex

Parks & Golf Courses During 2012/2013 our parks team: • Invested in new bird housing and animal shelters at Muiravonside Country Park • Developed a 20 year Kinneil Forest Plan in partnership with Central Scotland Forest Trust Our venues and events: • Approximately 26,000 attended the Fireworks in Callendar Park • We invested in a new Go-Kart track and Bouncy Castle • Paths leading to the farm at Muiravonside were upgraded to allow easier buggy and pushchair access What’s next? • We’re applying for funding to upgrade the Visitor Centre at Muiravonside • CBeebies are visiting Callendar Park in Summer 2013 • We will be upgrading the men’s changing rooms at the golf course and introducing new membership categories


Outdoors During 2012/2013 our outdoors team: • Worked with 259 young people to progress through the John Muir and Duke of Edinburgh Awards • Saw a 92% uptake on our outdoor programme compared to 84% last year • Delivered 301 days of outdoor activity to schools and additional support units

Our Venues and Events • We held a Snow Sports day in January, attracting over 500 visitors • We introduced a new community programme including beginners’ ski touring courses • We took a group of P7 pupils from Antonine Primary School for a day of climbing, mountain biking and then camped overnight at Muiravonside Country Park What’s next? • We’re applying to become a Duke of Edinburgh approved activity provider • We’re devising a programme of team building events which will appeal to local organisations and businesses • Our programme will continue to grow and develop as we begin to utilise the Helix

Falkirk Community Trust is a company limited by guarantee and does not have a share capital. Falkirk Council is the sole member of the Company.

Falkirk Council as our main funder and support; Falkirk Townscape initiative (THI), NHS Forth Valley, Forth Environment Link, Forth Valley Orchard’s Initiative, Social Work Services, Denny and District Tennis Club, Friends of Kinneil, Central Scotland Forest Trust, Falkirk District Arts and Civic Council.

The Company commenced trading on the 1 July 2011 and any surpluses generated by the Company are reinvested to improve the facilities and services which we provide to the communities of the Falkirk area.

What’s next for Falkirk Community Trust in 2013 – 2014? We’re taking over the operation of the Helix site, celebrating the first phase of opening on 14 September with Helix Day. 2014 brings lots of plans, celebrations and commemorations. We’ll be celebrating as the Queen’s Baton Relay passes through Falkirk ahead of the Commonwealth Games. We’ll also be commemorating the centenary of WW1 and the Year of Homecoming.

The Company is governed by its Memorandum and Articles of Association through a Board of 11 Directors. Five independent Directors are drawn from local business, sport, culture, environmental and learning sectors. Five Directors are nominated Elected Members of Falkirk Council.
