A
s usual, we have two contrasting but fascinating exhibitions for you, along with a host of related events, talks, children’s workshops, family entertainment, the new Tearoom and a selection of unique gifts in the Shop. In the Park Gallery, Fraser Ross brings us ‘Senses’; a terrific exhibition for spring as it asks us to think about plant life and how fundamental to life on earth it is. There is also a chance to learn more about Falkirk born plant collector George Forrest – if you, like me, said “who?” then you need to attend the talk being given by Leonie from the Royal Botanic Gardens.
Upstairs on the second floor a nostalgic look at Photos of the Past brought to us from the Falkirk Herald archive is the perfect chance to see if you recognise scenes from your home town, or even relatives who may have been photographed for our local press. Many of these absorbing photos haven’t been seen before, or not since their publication in the paper at least, and show a delightful peek into your past. AND last but far from least, the biggest news of the year so far, I can exclusively reveal that the CBeebies on Tour gang are coming to Callendar Park! Yes, Mr Bloom will be coming for
the weekend, with a HUGE free event on 29 and 30 June. We can’t reveal more than that at the moment – but sign up to the emailing list for regular news and you’ll be the first to know when the tickets are available; you’ll find the sign-up form on our website homepage: falkirkcommunitytrust.org

Pictures of the Past Saturday 01 June – Sunday 29 September Callendar House Free
Over the years our countryside, towns and even the way we work has changed dramatically. Fashions, architecture and industries that were familiar to our parents and grandparents have changed, been destroyed or closed down. Here at Callendar House we thought you would like to see glimpses of these past lives through an exhibition of images, many of which have rarely been seen before. There is no single focus but rather the idea is to show you glimpses of our history, of lives past and a changing world. There are images of people at work, buildings going up and coming down, shop interiors, farmers working the land and some quirky ones that probably would never be taken today. Drawn from the glass plate negative collections given to us by the Falkirk Herald, these wonderful images span the early decades of the 20th century and give us a wonderful glimpse into life through the eyes of the newspaper’s photographers. They will bring a smile and maybe a few wide eyed stares to anyone who comes along. Pictures courtesy of The Falkirk Herald

“The world is filled with lifeless objects, most become a background. The vision is to create intelligent and playful projects exploring human interaction that evoke personal value, open our imaginations, and make us smile.” Fraser Ross Fraser Ross is an artist and designer based in Glasgow. His work is inspired by the unique plant life found only in Scotland. In this exhibition he is investigating human interaction through shape changing projects that explore and subvert the senses. Plants and organisms inspire this solo exhibition, expanding this theme, as plants are a fundamental part of life. They generate oxygen, food and medicine that allow humans and other life forms to exist. His work explores natural light, movement, feelings, smells and sounds and his practice holds a great significance on design and in particular the pursuit of function. This exhibition shows the organic processes that intrigue the artist but with the work itself operating as a scientific experiment in which the viewer, participant is cast as the test. One of the highlights of the exhibition will examine celebrated Falkirk born plant collector and explorer George Forrest through playful objects, where knowledge gained can be passed on, and the exploration of new ideas and materials can be shared.

Talks Green Room, Callendar House
Thursday 16 May 12.30 - 1.30pm Cost: £6.70 includes tea, coffee and sandwiches. Leonie Paterson, archivist at the Royal Botanical Garden Edinburgh will give an illustrated talk on our Falkirk born botanist who became famous as a worldwide plant hunter. Forrest was born in Falkirk on 13 March 1873. In 1904 he went on an expedition to Yunnan in south western China in search of exotic plants, particularly species of rhododendron. Forrest made seven trips to Yunnan, collecting samples and seeds for the Herbarium and for avid collectors willing to pay for new species to add to their collections. On 5 January 1932, while hunting game in the hills near Tengchong, the town wherein Forrest traditionally set up his base, he suffered a massive heart attack and died instantly. He was buried at Tengchong next to his friend George Litton. Rhododendrons in the arboretum at Callendar Park are said to be from his collecting.
Saturday 8 June Park Gallery, Callendar House
11am - 12noon Free Artist and designer Fraser Ross will describe the inspirations behind his work, including natural influences and those of George Forrest, described as one of Britain’s greatest plant hunters.
