So much has been going on at the Hippodrome and there is still more to look forward to in the months ahead. In March we held our third Hippodrome Festival of Silent Cinema and it was bigger and better than ever. The audience for the 2013 five-day celebration of silent film and live music was about 25% up on last year and all the tweeting, facebook posting and evaluation has given a very clear message: everyone fair enjoyed themselves and audiences are already looking forward eagerly to next year. Be amongst the first to hear about new developments for our 2014 plans by liking our ‘silentcinemafestival’ facebook page. Although the Festival red carpet and bunting have been packed away, and the double bass borrowed by Mark Kermode for his performance has been returned, we will be rolling out the glamour accessories again this season for a very special world premiere of ‘The News and the Weather’. In partnership with Scottish company Starcatchers – who specialise in performances and creativity for babies, toddlers and young children – pre-school children at three Glasgow nurseries and three Falkirk Council nurseries (Avonbridge , Heathrigg , Westquarter) have been working with video and blue-screen artists to create a child’s eye view of current affairs. The project has been supported by Falkirk Community Trust and the public will have a chance to see the super short film they have made before the main feature screening of ‘Epic’ on Saturday 22 June 11am, Saturday 27 July 11am and 2.30pm. At the Hippodrome we want to play our part in making great cinema experiences part of everyone’s childhood. We have a brilliant line-up of films for the holidays including the new ‘Monsters, Inc.’ prequel and the ‘Despicable Me’ sequel (plus earlier evening starts and extra day-time slots). Of course some of the best-loved cinema classics were not made specifically for children but make excellent introductions to first-class cinema story telling. ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ (see pg. 13) is a beautiful film about justice and morality that speaks 2 as much to young people as adults.

And in my view you’re never too young… or too old, to be transported by the romance of ‘Roman Holiday’. My motto for the month of August then is: ‘Grow Up With Gregory Peck’! Adolescent narrators, not yet corrupted by the world around them, and struggling for what’s right, also appear in Huck-Finn-like film ‘Mud’ (pg. 4), and in my personal pick for the season: ‘Wadjda’ (pg. 7). This stand-out film from Saudi Arabia about an irrepressible young girl determined to realise her dreams will, I’m sure, make your spirits sing. As part of our on-going commitment to extend the accessibility of our programme we are piloting Autism Friendly screenings this season. Autism Friendly screenings will be offered for six titles in the programme, alongside the regular screenings. At these screenings the film and the cinema environment within the Hippodrome will be suitable for children with autism spectrum disorders and/or sensory hypersensitivity. Everyone is welcome to attend but there will be a few modifications in the auditorium – see page 18 for full details and do let us know if you have any queries. It is a regular source of delight for me to spot how the programme – once brought together – reveals unexpected links and threads of commonality. Who would have thought that a member of the voice cast in ‘Monsters University’ would appear in the credits of the latest Shakespeare adaptation… and that this erudite film would be directed by the man behind ‘Buffy’ and ‘Avengers Assemble’! Shakespeare is now officially on trend. Check out our Summer of Shakespeare (pgs. 10 and 11) and take your seat in one of the most conducive venues in the land to enjoy a new telling of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ (adapted by Julian-Downton-Fellowes) plus exciting new productions from the Globe theatre starring, among others, national treasure: Stephen Fry. Love is All You Need

Robert Downey Jr. puts on the Iron Man suit for a third outing for the arrogant but charming Tony Stark, this time under the direction of action genre pioneer, Shane Black (writer: ‘Lethal Weapon’). The egotistical hero of earlier Marvel movies is right at the heart of this suspenseful drama which relates some of Stark’s back-story and introduces a super-villain going by the name of The Mandarin (Sir Ben Kingsley). Big action set pieces and plenty of tension balance nicely with rewarding character development and cracking dialogue.

A light-footed romance starring Brosnan as a middle-aged widower and remote single father, and Trine Dyrholm as a loyal wife who abruptly learns of her feckless husband’s ‘shortcomings’. The two must travel from their homes in Denmark to attend the Italian wedding of their son and daughter respectively, where the idyllically staged nuptials play out against a backdrop of family tensions, absurd guests and buried passions. The leads are delicately performed whilst the stunning Amalfi coast locations are wonderful to behold… a bit like ‘Mamma Mia’ without the singing!

Black is back – by name and by nature – in this darkly comic, ‘strange but true’ story about a funeral director who befriends a rich widow. She (the redoubtable Shirley MacLaine) is hateful and widely despised. He (Jack Black) is a respected and wellloved member of the community, and so the townspeople naturally leap to his defence when the widow is murdered and Bernie is charged with the crime. Jack Black is a revelation in the role and, for once, replaces his manic mannerisms with a rounded satirical characterisation.

Taking its cue from ‘Whistle Down the Wind’ and ‘Huckleberry Finn’ this bold story follows two teenagers who find a fugitive, called Mud, hiding out in an abandoned boat on the banks of the Mississippi. The pair soon fall under his spell and are enlisted as go-betweens for the enigmatic and intense renegade (McConaughey) and his long-lost sweetheart (Witherspoon). Strong themes of coming-of-age and making your way in the grown-up world, and even a touch of religious metaphor are played out in this splendid Southern Gothic drama.

A retro romantic comedy set in the age when all a girl could respectably aspire to was becoming a well coiffured secretary. Rose yearns to escape the life of domestic drudgery she seems destined for into the world of work. A disastrous job interview reveals she has a special gift for typing at extraordinary speed. To secure her dream job she must compete in a speed typing competition and, Henry Higgins like, her boss takes on the task of coaching her to success. A vibrant, funny, good oldfashioned movie with lovely period detail.

For many, Neil Jordan is responsible for the redoubled popularity of the filmic vampire with his adaptation of Anne Rice’s ‘Interview with a Vampire’. Nearly twenty years on Jordan returns to blood-drinking mythology, this time with a pairing of mother and daughter vampires who are bound together across the centuries, and currently stalking their prey in lap-dancing clubs and council estates. Far removed from the romanticism of Twilight and some of the more familiar tropes of the genre, this is stark and brooding stuff.

Linklater (see ‘Bernie’ pg 3) in exquisitely intimate mode, continuing his suite of films charting the romance of Jesse and Celine who first met as youngsters, for a few precious hours before ‘sunrise’ on a train to Vienna, then met fleetingly and regretfully again, before ‘sunset’, nine years on in Paris. Now, twenty years since their first meeting the pair are holidaying in Greece, socialising with friends and chewing over the frustrations and joys that come with long term commitment. A rewarding chapter in one of the most involving cinematic love stories of recent years.

Literary adaptation of a celebrated novel about suffocated provincial housewife Thérèse, afflicted with the same malaise suffered by comparable literary creations Mme Bovary and Anna Karenina. Living a life of provincial luxury, Thérèse (a luminous as ever Audrey Tautou) becomes increasingly dissatisfied with her life when she compares her own lot to that of her sister-in-law, newly engulfed in a passionate affair. Tautou impresses in her portrayal of yearning below the surface of the apparently distant heroine in this classically executed and sumptuously photographed film.

This long awaited big-budget spectacular stars Brad Pitt as a decent U.N. employee and family man, fighting a war against the un-dead. Filmed in Glasgow, and a few miles up the road around Grangemouth, the movie has generated a great deal of local interest but also attracted a fair amount of negative publicity, partly perhaps for the degree to which it has departed from the much-admired source novel. In any case, worth a look for comparison with classic zombie films, for social commentary on the global state versus the individual, and of course for local landmark spotting!

In this genre-twisting new film, Oscar nominated Sarah Polley (‘Take This Waltz’, ‘Away From Her’) is both filmmaker and detective as she investigates the secrets kept by a family of storytellers. She playfully interviews a cast of characters of varying reliability, eliciting candid, yet mostly contradictory, answers to the same questions. As each relates their version of the family mythology, present-day recollections shift into nostalgia-tinged glimpses of their mother, who departed leaving a trail of unanswered questions. This deeply personal film reveals how our narratives shape and define us, and unravels the essence of family: always complicated, warmly messy and fiercely loving.

Sophie (Felicity Jones) is a young British girl keen to experience New York City, who arrives as a foreign exchange student to stay with an apparently perfect upstate family, having miscalculated her destination, thus ending up in a sleepy suburb, many miles from the Big Apple. Her presence complicates the superficially ideal household headed up by frustrated piano teacher Keith (Guy Pearce) – a wellworn premise – but here the characters’ insecurities and shortcomings are subtly explored, with more emphasis on states of mind than melodrama, underpinned by a beautifully rich piano score.

Genuinely deserving of the term “gem” this deceptively simple charmer follows ten-year-old Wadjda – bright, confident and more assertive than her sternly devout teachers would wish – and her quest to own a bike so she can cycle freely beside her best friend Abdullah. The trouble is, her harried mother does not have the money and, in Islamic Saudi Arabia, girls are not allowed to ride bicycles. Undeterred, Wadjda enters the school Koran recitation competition in the hope of using the prize money to secure her dream. A wonderful feel-good film about being ten and being true to yourself.

In The World’s End pub, twenty years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends are persuaded by Gary (Simon Pegg) to reunite and stage an encore. The reluctant pals return to their hometown and attempt to reach the fabled final stop only to walk in to an alien invasion. Billed as the final part in the ‘Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy’, which began with zombie rom-com ‘Shaun of the Dead’ and continued with ‘Hot Fuzz,’ this is a welcome return to form for Pegg, Nick Frost and cohorts.

The hapless titular heroine of this New York set comedy fable is stumbling through her twenties, throwing herself into her dreams with dwindling success… clashing with friends, struggling to keep a job and to pay the rent. Greta Gerwig is priceless in this disarming and tender story about friendship and finding your way in life. And, as you would expect from the director of ‘The Squid and the Whale’, this is a quirky but never mawkish treat, with a touch of ‘Annie Hall’.

The Road: A Story of Life and Death The Hippodrome marks Refugee Week – celebrating the contribution of refugees to the UK and promoting a better understanding of why people seek sanctuary. This film offers an intimate insight into the lives of diverse characters who have made their way from all over the world to the English capital, in search of a better life. The range of humanity represented wins our sympathy and ultimately our understanding as we get to know the stories of each wounded individual, striving in their various ways to make a strange city their home. A highly affecting study of immigration, this engaging study is like a filmic version of Ralph McTell’s ‘Streets of London’ redolent with heartbreak and compassion. Fire in the Night (cert tbc) Marking the 25th Anniversary of Piper Alpha the Hippodrome presents a special preview screening of a new documentary recounting the tragedy that occurred in July 1988 on the Piper Alpha rig, where 167 men were killed. Based on the excellent book of the same name by Stephen McGinty the film features testimonies from survivors and rescuers who were in the midst of a fire that engulfed the rig and explores how the disaster has shaped each of their lives. The impact on those personally involved, and those who watched the tragic events unfold on our TV screens, was inestimable and this look back through the eyes of those most closely involved in it, sheds further light on one of Scotland’s darkest industrial days. Within a year of being diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease, Neil Platt goes from being a healthy young father to becoming completely paralysed from the neck down. As his body gets weaker, his perspective on life changes. Knowing he only has a few months left to live, and while he still has the ability to speak, Neil puts together a letter and memory box for his baby son Oscar, attempting to make sense of the last 34 years and to anticipate what Oscar might want to know about his father in a future he can only imagine. Neil determined to share this last stage of his life through a blog that touched many people. With his posts forming the film’s narration, ‘I Am Breathing’ listens to Neil in the last months of his life and tells the story of his life from his memories and impressions of love, friends and motorbike rides. A beautiful, intimate and occasionally humorous film revealing what makes us human through the story of an ordinary yet remarkable man. Romeo and Juliet (cert tbc)

Hailed as the first great contemporary Shakespeare film adaptation since Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Romeo + Juliet’ Joss Whedon (‘Buffy’, ‘Firefly’, ‘Avengers Assemble’) has defied the sceptics and pulled together a spot-on interpretation of the tale of engaged couple – Hero and Claudio – who conspire to get verbal sparring partners and confirmed singles – Benedick and Beatrice – to wed as well. The low-fi but up-to-date touches (mobile phones, jazz soundtrack etc) serve up a no-nonsense telling that brings to the fore the abundant wit and gloriously spiky romance of Shakespeare’s text.

Julian Fellowes (‘Downton Abbey’, ‘The Young Victoria’) adapts the screenplay for Shakespeare’s most often performed love story. This is a classic interpretation of the text – eschewing flashy modernisms and opting instead for period costume and ‘genuine’ Verona shooting locations. A young teenage Hailee Steinfeld – who made such a big impression as Mattie in the Coen Brothers’ ‘True Grit’ remake – is a suitably beautiful and spirited Juliet and is supported by the likes of Damian Lewis as her father Lord Capulet and Paul Giamatti as Friar Laurence.

Twelfth Night

Shakespeare’s masterpiece of the turbulence of war and the arts of peace tells the romantic story of Henry’s campaign to recapture the English possessions in France. But the ambitions of this charismatic king are challenged by a host of vivid characters caught up in the real horrors of war. Much loved for his Globe performance as Prince Hal in Henry IV Parts 1 & 2 (2010), Jamie Parker plays the matured King Henry.

Starring Mark Rylance as Olivia & Stephen Fry as Malvolio this is an all-male ‘Original Practices’ production exploring clothing, music, dance and settings possible in the Globe around 1601. Filled with a cast of unforgettable characters this staging of ‘Twelfth Night’ was met with sellout performances and led to a hit run in London’s West End. The perfect version of a play about loss and misplaced love – by turns painfully hilarious and deeply moving.

A new restoration of the breathtaking film by legendary director Werner Herzog in which the production famously mimicked the film’s fictional narrative. Shot on location in the wild Amazonian jungle, the tale of doomed adventure and stunning, savage beauty remains one of Herzog’s most extraordinary achievements. Volatile star Klaus Kinski, described by Herzog as “the most difficult actor in the world”, was his inspired choice for the role of Don Lope, a power-crazy, demonic 16th century explorer who leads a band of conquistadors through the Amazon in search of El Dorado.

Gregory Peck magnificently brings to life the wise and decent Atticus Finch from the pages of Harper Lee’s adored novel. In a small town in ‘thirties deep south America, a highly respected lawyer puts his career and his family on the line when he decides to defend a black man accused of rape. The trial and events preceding it are seen through the eyes of Finch’s young daughter, Scout, in this timeless film about growing up and learning the difference between right and wrong.

Who doesn’t love this film! Only the coldest of hearts could be immune to this delightful story about a spirited young Princess (Audrey Hepburn) who escapes the constraints of her protocol-heavy life whilst on a diplomatic visit to Rome, and falls under the protection of American scoophungry journalist (Gregory Peck). Filmed on location in Rome, the film won two Academy Awards including Best Actress for the 24-year-old Hepburn in her first starring role, and is owed more than a passing debt by ‘Notting Hill’.

Sequel to the wonderful feature that introduced us to the villainous but loveable Gru who feigns a caring nature in order to recruit three orphans to his world domination plans. The film reunites the original directors and voice cast and sees Gru (Steve Carell) recruited by the AntiVillain League to help deal with a powerful new super criminal voiced by Benjamin Bratt. Mwahh ha ha haaa…

Lovable monsters – green, one-eyed Mike Wazowski and big blue furry giant James P. Sullivan – were an inseparable pair at Monsters Incoroprated, but that wasn't always the case. When they first met at university it was loathe at first sight for the two mismatched monsters. This splendid Disney/Pixar prequel unlocks the door to how Mike and Sulley overcame their differences and became the best of friends.

Galaxy Quest

Continuing the fruitful trend of superhero re-boots this latest revisits the Superman story and is produced by Christopher Nolan who revivified Batman with such success. Using as a springboard the familiar story of a young boy, adopted on Earth having escaped the dying planet of Krypton, the film expands on the young Clark Kent’s struggle to find his place in life whilst being gifted with unique super powers. The alienated other-worldling is played by suitably beefy and chiselled Henry Cavill, who must learn to become the hero he is destined to be.

At once an affectionate spoof of sci-fi classics like ‘Star Trek’ and ‘Battlestar Gallactica’, and a space adventure in its own right, this witty comedy follows members of the washed-up cast of a once-cult TV sci-fi series who are mistaken by actual aliens for the space heroes they portray and abducted in order to save the universe from some intergalactic baddies. The cast has lots of fun in their respective roles – especially Rickman as a Shakespearean actor chafing against his inescapable association with a Spock-like character.
