BO’NESS

CINEMA WITH A WARM WELCOME

The Children Act

PROGRAMMER’S PICK THE CHILDREN ACT This month we are screening the much anticipated adaptation of Ian McEwan’s novel about a High Court Judge considering the case of a young Jehovah’s witness seeking permission of the courts to refuse life-saving treatment. I enjoyed the book and am very much looking forward to the screen-telling. Besides, for my money, any film starring acting royalty Emma Thompson and Stanley Tucci is going to be worth watching… (and yes, that does include Thompson as Mrs. Potts and Tucci as Maestro Cadenza in Beauty and the Beast!). You’ll notice that our first screening of this title on Fri 5th Oct at 5pm will be presented with captions. Captioning is a service for deaf and hard-ofhearing audience members who rely on subtitling to enable them to follow the film’s dialogue. The on-screen captions communicate all audio information, including sound effects, a speaker’s identity, and non-speech elements. A number of people have expressed a preference for this addition to our Hippodrome offering and now that we have two extra screening slots a week we’re in a position to introduce this improved provision. An astonishing 945,000 people in Scotland are deaf or have hearing loss – 1 in 6 of our population – so it is high time we made this change. Captioned screenings will be presented on selected titles (subject to availability) and selected screenings, and will be clearly marked in the programme. Other captioned screenings this month are King of Thieves and The Wife. Please give us your feedback – we’d love to know what you think. Remember too that selected films are available with Audio Description (marked AD in the programme) for partially sighted or blind people (AD headphones are available to collect from Box Office when you pick up your tickets). PS. Nae Passaran will screen in December. Alison Strauss, Arts Development Officer (Film and Media)

THE WIFE E E NI

After nearly forty years of marriage, Joan and Joe Castleman (Glenn Close and Jonathan Pryce) balance each other perfectly. Where Joe is casual, Joan is elegant. Where Joe is vain, Joan is self-effacing. And where Joe enjoys his very public role as Great American Novelist, Joan pours her considerable intellect, grace, charm, and diplomacy into the private role of Great Man’s Wife. Joe is about to be awarded the Nobel Prize for his acclaimed and prolific body of work. Joe’s literary star has blazed since he and Joan first met in the late 1950. The Wife interweaves the story of the couple’s youthful passion and ambition with a portrait of a marriage, thirty-plus years later-a lifetime’s shared compromises, secrets, betrayals, and mutual love. The Hippodrome is proud to present the first in a season of Bill Forsyth films - the classic rom-com which remains the ultimate depiction of coming-of-age awkwardness and an enduring favourite of Scottish cinema. Gregory (John Gordon Sinclair) is the teenager who’s smitten with the new star player of the school football team, the enigmatic Dorothy (Dee Hepburn). With cringe-making authenticity, Forsyth’s film captures the mumbled geekiness of teen love and the fleeting thrills of chip-shop trips and doorstep kisses, years before American indie cinema appropriated the milieu. Special Event: We are thrilled that Bill Forsyth himself will attend the screening on Thursday 11th October and take part in a post-screening conversation chaired by Diane Henderson (Deputy Artistic Director, Edinburgh International Film Festival) 10

We present the director’s cut of the “scariest horror of all time” at a special screening of this sensational and controversial film – the first horror pic to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. On its release the terrifying tale of an innocent girl possessed by a demon affected audiences so strongly that paramedics were called to treat people who fainted or went into hysterics. Rest assured that cinema staff ‘medics’ will be on hand to revive anyone who is overcome with terror and there will be horror themed refreshments in the café and bar (… pea soup anyone…?). The team are going all out to generate an atmosphere in the venue which befits the film’s frightening reputation so join us if you dare! Dir. William Friedkin / USA / 1973 / 2hr 2min

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST TUE 9

19:15

A new production of one of the funniest plays in English, Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest, will be broadcast live to the Hippodrome Bo’ness from the Vaudeville Theatre in London’s West End. Wilde’s much-loved masterpiece throws love, logic and language into the air to make one of theatre’s most dazzling firework displays. Jack, Algy, Gwendolyn and Cecily discover how unsmooth runs the course of true love, while Lady Bracknell keeps a baleful eye on the mayhem of manners. Michael Fentiman’s new production stars Olivier Award winner Sophie Thompson as Lady Bracknell (Four Weddings and a Funeral) and Jeremy Swift as Reverend Chasuble (Downton Abbey). This is the fourth and final play from the Oscar Wilde Season, a year-long celebration of the brilliant Victorian playwright being staged by the Classic Spring Theatre Company. FUNNY GIRL Wed 24

Following its record-breaking, sell-out run in London’s West End and national tour, the critically-acclaimed musical Funny Girl comes to a cinema near you, featuring Sheridan Smith in “an unforgettable star turn” (The Times). Funny Girl is semi-biographical, based on the life and career of Broadway star, film actress and comedienne Fanny Brice (a role made famous by Barbara Streisand on Broadway and in the 1968 film adaptation), and her stormy relationship with entrepreneur and gambler Nick Arnstein. Praised by critics as having “irresistible charm, wit and warmth” (Metro), and hailing Sheridan Smith as “the greatest star by far” (The Daily Telegraph), Funny Girl features a host of iconic and timeless musical numbers including “People,” “I’m the Greatest Star,” and “Don’t Rain On My Parade.” Hilarious, glorious, and ‘exhilarating’ (The Independent), don’t miss this sensational production from the comfort of your local cinema seat.
