Earlier this month I was lucky enough to attend a ‘focus group’ about the Hippodrome. It was a genuine pleasure to hear views from a cross-section of attenders. The group were vocal and between them had a wide range of tastes, opinions and film-going habits… some scrupulously loyal to the Hippodrome and others self-declared ‘pick n mixers’ who went to whichever cinema was showing the film they wanted to see. What they all shared however was an appreciation of the Hippodrome ambience as well as our balance of mainstream and alternative titles. Heartening stuff. We do aim to offer a mix of ‘hot’ titles likely to have a broad appeal and more ‘niche’ films offering an alternative to the multiplex where we can. This season we are in the rare position of screening a film with lots of buzz that is not showing at another cinema near you. Following a dispute with the distributors, three major UK exhibitors have decided not to screen Tarantino’s ‘The Hateful Eight’. I’m glad we are not caught in the eye of this particular cinema storm and that independent cinemas like ours will, in this instance, be able to side step the collective buying power of the Goliath cinema chains, contributing to audience choice, whilst experiencing a welcome taste of the market clout regularly enjoyed by the competition. Reflecting the calendar of film releases last season at the Hippodrome was full of blockbusters and must-see crowd-pleasers. This season is lighter on Oscar nominees and big budget ‘tentpoles’ but strong on fresh talent, films experimenting with mouldbreaking form, and period classics. Charlie Kaufman’s new stop motion animation film ‘Anomalisa’ for example has been described as magical and brilliant with Empire Magazine summing up the view of many with the declaration that the film “has more heart, soul and pathos than 99.9 per cent of live-action movies.”

Talking of breaking the mould we are extremely proud that the Hippodrome is home to Scotland’s only festival of celebrating silent film. We have come a long way since we held our first HippFest in 2011. We’ve won awards, five-star reviews and the hearts of audiences and performers far and wide. HippFest is for everybody… even those who claim not to like silent or b/w films have been won over by the irresistible ‘wow’ of great films with live music at our friendly, inclusive festival. The bar is high but for our sixth edition we have created a programme to match all expectations. Check out the summary on pages 7 – 9 and visit hippfest.co.uk for full details. Not content with a five star festival we are also proud hosts for an abundance of one off special events. We have new Scottish documentary following cult indie-pop artist and Falkirk bairn Aidan Moffat who sets about re-writing his country’s oldest songs in the face of centuries of history. Also with live music we will show a 60th anniversary revival of a lost archive film with music by Drew Wright and Hamish Brown. During Deaf Awareness Week we present an extraordinary film about the Deaf community and the revelatory fight for recognition of its language, including a BSL interpreted Q&A; and later in May we are thrilled to be welcoming Graeme Obree – aka ‘the Flying Scotsman’ – for a post screening discussion at the Hippodrome about a wonderful new film charting his latest inspiring endeavour. We have even managed to fit in some great titles for the holidays! Look out for Disney’s new version of ‘The Jungle Book’, the latest Kung Fu Panda film plus a live broadcast of York Theatre Royal’s production of ‘The Railway Children’. See you soon... The Hateful Eight

Bridge of Spies

Dad’s Army

A few years after the Civil War, a stagecoach carrying bounty hunter (Russell) and his fugitive (Leigh) hurtles through the wintry Wyoming landscape towards the town of Red Rock. Along the road, they encounter two strangers and together seek refuge at a stagecoach pitstop where four other colourful characters are also holed up. As a storm overtakes them, the eight travellers come to learn they may not make it to Red Rock after all... A long simmering pot of black-humoured genre-rich Tarantino.

A repeat showing of this classic espionage thriller starring the ever-watchable Tom Hanks as James Donovan, a Brooklyn lawyer who finds himself thrust into the centre of the Cold War when the CIA sends him on the near-impossible task of negotiating the release of a captured American pilot. Apparently based on real events the film’s drama revolves around the riveting relationship between Donovan the lawyer and Abel, the Russian spy at the centre of a diplomatic trade-off. Tense, involving and masterful… Spielberg at his best.

Fans of the original series will delight in this affable salute to the much-loved TV series, especially for its impeccable casting – notably Toby Jones as Cptn Mainwaring and Michael Gambon as the doddery Private Godfrey. WWII is reaching its climax and the Allies are poised to invade France and defeat the Axis powers. In Blighty the Home Guard have a new mission which promises to revive their spirits and reputation. That is until glamorous journalist Rose Winters arrives to write about their exploits.

Hail, Caesar!

Anomalisa

Marguerite

Four-time Oscar-winning filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen write and direct this all-star madcap comedy set during Hollywood's Golden Age. The film follows a day in the life of studio fixer Eddie (Brolin) whose job it is to protect the public image of the stars, but whose ability to smooth troubled waters is sorely tested when the studio’s prized leading man, Baird Whitlock (Clooney), is kidnapped. An all-round wonderful cast have a hoot in this light-hearted and entertaining homage to the movies that came out of the 1950s studio system.

Ahead of its UK release this brilliantly unique film has already won 18 awards and nearly 60 nominations including an Oscar and Golden Globe. A tender, touching and thought-provoking black comedy, filmed entirely in breath-taking stop motion animation, this is the tale of Michael Stone (Thewils), a husband, father and successful motivational speaker who is struck low by the mundanity of his life. But a chance meeting with Lisa throws the dullness into disarray and Michael feels he may have just found the possibility of happiness... Humorously absurd and bracingly different.

Inspired by the true story of Florence Foster Jenkins (also the inspiration for the Susan Alexander character in ‘Citizen Kane’) this moving film tells the story of Marguerite - a wealthy music lover who, despite being completely tone deaf, loves to sing for her friends and husband. They all conspire to keep from her how talentless she is but matters get out of hand when Marguerite decides to perform in public. An exquisite satire that will whet appetites for the Stephen Frears/Meryl Streep film of the same story due for release next month.

Eye in the Sky

Iona

Eddie the Eagle

A tense, morally complex thriller about the political, and personal implications of modern warfare as played out by the teams tasked with making controversial life and death decisions. Helen Mirren stars, alongside the late Alan Rickman, as Colonel Powell, a UK-based military officer in command of a top secret drone operation to capture terrorists in Kenya. Powell discovers the targets are planning a suicide bombing and the mission escalates from "capture" to "kill" but then a young girl enters the kill zone…

Featured as the Closing Night Film of the 2015 Edinburgh International Film Festival, this low-budget independent film from Scotland is a disquieting family drama set against the stark backdrop of the Inner Hebrides island. A young woman (a striking performance from Ruth Negga aka Raina in ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’) and her teenage son flee Glasgow, seeking refuge from a violent crime, travelling to the isolated religious community she left behind years before where they seek forgiveness and a way to come to terms with loss of faith.

Dir. Gavin Hood / UK / 2015 / 1h 42m With: Helen Mirren, Aaron Paul, Alan Rickman

Dir. Scott Graham / UK/Germany / 2015 / 1h 25m / AD With: Ruth Negga, Douglas Henshall, Ben Gallagher, Michelle Duncan, Tom Brooke,

A feel-good story about lovable underdog Michael "Eddie" Edwards (Taron Egerton), an unlikely but courageous British skijumper who never stopped believing in himself - even as an entire nation was counting him out. With the help of a rebellious and charismatic coach (Hugh Jackman), Eddie takes on the establishment and wins the hearts of sports fans around the world by making an improbable and historic showing at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. A genuine crowd-pleaser for the whole family with a terrific ‘eighties soundtrack.

Son of Saul

Ran

In this searing drama, a concentration camp inmate tasked with burning the dead discovers the body of his young son and must choose between participating in the clandestine uprising being planned among the prisoners or securing a proper Jewish burial for his child. The creative team pledged that their film should not look beautiful or appealing, should not be a horror film and that the camera should stay with Saul throughout. The result places us in the shoes of one person experiencing the hell of the Holocaust, and refuses to let us back away. Appalling but essential.

A stunning digital restoration of Kurosawa's famous interpretation of ‘King Lear’. Borrowing narrative elements from Samurai legend and Shakespearean tragedy, ‘Ran’ stars Nakadai as the arrogant Lord who decides to abdicate and divide his domain amongst three sons, with catastrophic results. Spectacularly beautiful, with gorgeous, colour-saturated frames, it is the product of a breath-taking artistic vision that works as an historical epic and Shakespearean adaptation, dramatising the pain and rage of ageing, as well as a bloody, action-packed war film with a quintessential silent central battle scene.

Preview Screening with Live Performance from Recent Aidan Releases Moffat

Where You’re Meant to Be The Hippodrome is extremely proud to present a preview screening of the new Scottish documentary featuring cult-pop raconteur and Falkirk bairn Aidan Moffat. The former Arab Strap frontman sets out to explore Scotland’s past by rewriting and touring its oldest songs. But he doesn't count on running into 79-yearold force-of-nature Sheila Stewart – a travelling balladeer who upturns Moffat's folk assumptions. He believes the old songs are ripe for updating. She does not. With Stewart's wrath ringing in his ears, Moffat embarks on a road trip that finds him dressed for battle in a Highland graveyard, caught between feuding monster-hunters at Loch Ness, and singing in a dismissive farmer's kitchen, before facing Stewart in his home-town of Glasgow for an unlikely final showdown, in this “funny wee film about music and death”. Special 60th anniversary revival of a lost archive film telling the story of the Scottish Highlands and its people, commissioned by the 2016 Glasgow Short Film Festival at a time when land reform in Scotland is as hotly topical as it was in the 1950s. Assembled by filmmaker Minttu Mäntynen and accompanied live by musicians Drew Wright (aka Wounded Knee) and Hamish Brown (part of Swimmer One). In 1956 the Dawn Cine Group – a Glasgow-based socialist filmmaking collective – embarked on ‘Lost Treasure’, an ambitious project confronting the rural depopulation crisis. Although 40 minutes of footage were shot across Sutherland and Caithness, including spectacular mountain views of Suilven, the film was never finished. This beautifully atmospheric live audio-visual performance responds to the abandoned film and goes some way towards completing the story it tells.

Power in our Hands The Hippodrome is proud to present a screening of this ground-breaking documentary on the active and resilient Deaf community's fight for civil rights and for recognition of its language, with an introduction and post-screening discussion in association with the British Deaf Association. Combining social history and archive film with contemporary interviews the film explores the history of the Deaf community in the UK. The Deaf community does not see deafness as a disability; instead positioning itself as a significant cultural and linguistic group with a rich and exciting history and with the word ‘Deaf’ an expression of cultural identity. From the social scenes of the 1930s, to the 2000 march supporting British Sign Language recognition, this documentary will give people a glimpse into Deaf culture that is mostly hidden from the hearing world. We are delighted that Maureen Morrison, Regional Deaf Heritage Officer, British Deaf Association will join us at the screening to introduce the film and lead a post-screening discussion. NT Live: Hangmen

The Railway Children

by Martin McDonagh

by E. Nesbit, adapted by Mike Kenny & Damian Cruden

Following a sell-out run at London’s Royal Court Theatre, award-winning Martin McDonagh (‘In Bruges’) returns to the West End with his deeply funny new play, broadcast live to cinemas by National Theatre Live.

E. Nesbit’s family favourite follows the story of Bobbie, Phyllis and Peter who suffer a huge upheaval when their father is falsely imprisoned. The children and their mother, now penniless, are forced to move from London to rural Yorkshire to a new home next to a railway line. The event is filmed from the National Railway Museum in York, featuring the train from the original much-loved film.

In his small pub Oldham, Harry (David Morrissey) is something of a local celebrity. But what's the second-best hangman in England to do on the day they've abolished hanging? Amongst the cub reporters and pub regulars dying to hear Harry’s reaction to the news, his old assistant Syd (Andy Nyman) and the peculiar Mooney (Johnny Flynn) lurk with very different motives for their visit. "The funniest play in London right now" Time Out "The best new play of the year" The Daily Telegraph "Gripping, funny and dramatically tense" The Sunday Times "Drop-dead hilarious" The Independent Dir. Director Jon Favreau (‘Iron Man’) and Disney promise a very special and perhaps darker adventure epic, based on Rudyard Kipling’s timeless stories and inspired by Disney’s 1967 classic animated film. Using live-action and motion-capture the team of creatives tell the story of Mowgli (newcomer Neel Sethi), a ‘man-cub’ who has been raised by a family of wolves. But Mowgli finds he is no longer welcome in the jungle when fearsome tiger Shere Khan (voice of Idris Elba), promises to eliminate what he sees as a threat.
