I know the weather has been a bit rubbish outside but I comfort myself with the thought that it has been brilliant cinema weather lately. We’ve had a great summer at the Hippodrome. In fact, apart from the year when ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’ was released and hundreds of you flocked to our screenings, this has been the busiest summer we’ve had at the Hippodrome since we opened in 2009. So a big thank you to everyone who continues to support this special venue by choosing to see films here. This autumn there will be plenty of other cinemas screening the Kray brothers biopic ‘Legend’, the latest ‘Maze Runner’ film and of course the new Bond movie ‘Spectre’ but by choosing to see these blockbusters at the Hippodrome, and by encouraging others to do so, you are helping to ensure the future of Scotland’s oldest cinema. Remember too that we have many screenings and events that just aren’t offered at the multiplex. Most precious of these are the forthcoming showings of a new documentary ‘Seven Songs for a Long Life’ – a sensitive film about the patients and staff at Strathcarron Hospice who have found comfort and happiness through their shared love of music. After the official Hospice premiere in Stirling, ours will be the first public screening in the UK, launching the film for Hospice Care Week 2015. Join us and members of the production team, staff and participants at our special screening on Saturday 3 October before the film’s week-long run, selected for inclusion in ‘Luminate’, the annual festival that offers the chance to celebrate creativity, share stories and to explore what ageing means to all of us. Look out too for the Luminate screening of ‘Hip Hop-eration’ with the clear message: life is for living, no matter what your age. We are proud this season to take part in a major UK wide exhibition programme: BFI LOVE “films to fall in love with… films to break your heart” in which we present Wim Wenders’ divine ‘Wings of Desire’ and British masterpiece ‘A Matter of Life and Death’.

The Hippodrome team are working hard on plans to add an extra loving touch to our screenings. Check the website and Falkirk Arts Facebook for updates as they are announced including more BFI LOVE moments next season. I’m particularly excited to announce a one-off Hippodrome happening for Halloween: ‘Carnival of Souls’… a “cinema in the dark experience” inspired by the legacy of good old-fashioned scare radio and recorded using binaural audio – a specialised method of recording sound that creates a 3-D-like sensation for the listener, akin to being physically present in the soundscape. Unlike stereo sound which seems to take place ‘inside’ your head, binaural sound is discerned ‘outside’ the head, projected into physical space, with additional properties of direction, distance and range. The result is a heightened intimacy, capable of inducing a reflexive reaction... maybe goose-bumps, maybe an involuntary shiver or twitch but definitely disconcerting. Come along to experience for yourself this unique aural encounter. With the Iraq war enquiry back in the news now seems as pertinent a time as ever to screen ‘We Are Many’ the story of the global antiwar march in 2003, composed of archive clips and contemporary interviews with the organisers and sympathisers. The failure of the demonstrations to stop the war is no news but the film does make an interesting case for the wider impact of the people’s uprising and remains important viewing as we await the publication of the Chilcot report. On a much lighter note… with the 2015 Tour of Britain coming to Scotland in September we are pleased to present two films that celebrate the joys of cycling. Take advantage of our Bicycle Reels ticket offer and get money off when you book for both films together. See you soon… Alison Strauss Arts Development Officer (Film and Media)

The Legend of Barney Thomson

13 Minutes

The Treatment

Robert Carlyle’s directorial debut is a blackly comic and macabre tale with echoes of Irvine Welsh and Elmore Leonard. Carlyle plays the title role – a hapless barber, whose mundane life takes a chaotic turn when he inadvertently kills his boss and finds himself embroiled in an unsolved serial killer’s crime spree. The supporting cast have great fun with the Glasgow patter, none more so than Emma Thompson giving a hugely enjoyable, not-to-be-missed performance as Barney’s formidable Glaswegian mother: Cemolina!

A thought-provoking portrait of the resistance fighter who tried to assassinate Hitler in the Munich Bürgerbräukeller on November 8th 1939 – Georg Elser – a man who could have changed world history and saved millions of human lives… if only he had had 13 more minutes. Hirschbiegel – director of the definitive chronicle of Hitler’s last days, ‘Downfall’ – unpacks this despairing episode of Germany’s past from an intriguing angle and keeps the suspense at a thriller pitch, despite the outcome being a given from the outset.

An unsettling Belgian murder mystery from the same stable as ‘Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’… nail-biting, intense and gritty with grim themes of sexual violence and paedophilia. Based on one of a series of best-selling novels by British crime writer Mo Hayder, the film follows police inspector Cafmeyer, an obsessive loner, whose investigations into a psychopath’s crimes trigger memories of his own brother's abduction as a child, and the possibility that he may still be alive somewhere.

Legend (cert tbc)

Ricki and the Flash

Everest

From Academy Award winner Brian Helgeland (screenplay for ‘LA Confidential’, ‘A Knight’s Tale’ and ‘Mystic River’) comes the true story of the rise and fall of London's most notorious gangsters, Reggie and Ron Kray, who terrorised London in the 1950s and 60s. Tom Hardy gives a powerful performance as both brothers in this startling crime thriller, taking us into the secret history of the extraordinary events that secured the the Kray Twins’ place in the twentieth century’s hall of infamy.

Meryl Streep stars as Ricki, a guitar heroine who gave up everything for her dream of rock’n’roll stardom, but is now returning home to make things right with her offspring, including recently divorced Julie (played by Streep’s real-life daughter Mamie Gummer). Oscar-winning director Jonathan Demme (‘Philadelphia’, ‘The Silence of the Lambs’) loads this sterling drama with music and with terrific performances, including Kevin Kline’s turn as Ricki's longsuffering ex-husband, Pete.

Adventure based on real events in 1996, when a number of simultaneous expeditions up the world’s highest mountain were hit by a fierce snowstorm. The thrilling, edge-ofyour-seat story has been adapted for the screen by William Nicholson (‘Gladiator’) and Oscar-winner Simon Beaufoy (‘Slumdog Millionaire’) and stars Jake Gyllenhaal as leader of one of the groups in their awesome battle for survival.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials

Winner of the 2015 Sundance Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award, this beautifully acted and scripted coming-of-age drama is the story of Greg Gaines, an awkward high school senior whose mother forces him to spend time with his class-mate Rachel – recently diagnosed with cancer. Greg prefers his hobby of making short films with his friend Earl (parodies on feature classics like ‘A Sockwork Orange’, ‘Brew Velvet’ and ‘Death in Tennis’), but the suggestion they make a film for Rachel is a catalyst for change in all their lives.

In this next chapter of the ‘Maze Runner’ saga, adapted from second in a trilogy of best-selling books for young adults by James Dashner, Thomas and his fellow Gladers face their greatest challenge yet: searching for clues about the mysterious and powerful organization known as WCKD. Their journey takes them to the Scorch, a desolate landscape filled with unimaginable obstacles. Teaming up with resistance fighters, the Gladers take on WCKD's vastly superior forces and uncover its shocking plans for them all.

Hip Hop-eration

Macbeth (cert tbc)

The Program (cert tbc)

An inspirational documentary about 30 senior citizens (the oldest of whom is 96) who are preparing to take part in the World Hip-Hop Dance Championships in Las Vegas. ‘Hip Hop-eration’ will be screened with the short ‘Directed by Tweedie’ about granddad ‘Tweedie’ who takes up filmmaking, at the age of 87, inviting us to explore the difficulties of communication between the generations, and the unspoken contract that binds children to their grandparents.

A lean and powerful new screen adaptation of Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’ starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard who both excel in their respective roles as the fearless, inspiring warrior and his magnetic, misdirected wife, brought low by ambition and desire. A visceral interpretation of the dramatic realities of the times and a reimagining of what wartime must have been like for one of literature's most famous and compelling characters, here performed as definitively as one could imagine.

From director Stephen Frears (‘The Queen’, ‘Philomena’) comes the true story of the meteoric rise and fall of one of the most celebrated and controversial sportsmen in recent history: Lance Armstrong. At first charmed by Armstrong’s charisma and talent, Sunday Times journalist David Walsh (Chris O’Dowd) begins to question whether the ‘world’s greatest athlete’ is ‘clean’ and in the ensuing battle to unveil the truth, risks his own career, and the finances of his paper.

NT Live: Jane Eyre (Encore)

by John Steinbeck

This acclaimed re-imagining of Brontë's masterpiece was first staged by Bristol Old Vic last year, when the story was performed over two evenings. Director Sally Cookson now brings her celebrated production to the National, presented as a single, exhilarating performance, and almost 170 years on, Charlotte Brontë’s story of the trailblazing Jane is as inspiring as ever. From her beginnings as a destitute orphan, spirited Jane Eyre faces life’s obstacles head-on, surviving poverty, injustice and the discovery of bitter betrayal before taking the ultimate decision to follow her heart.

Seven Songs for a Long Life (cert tbc) The Hippodrome is proud to present this new film in partnership with Strathcarron Hospice and the Scottish Documentary Institute. Local filmmaker Amy Hardie (‘Edge of Dreaming’, Hippodrome Feb 2011) came to Strathcarron with instructions to “throw away your preconceptions and just hang out”. Four years later she and the patients have collaborated to make a sensitive and thoughtful feature documentary which invests a potentially downbeat subject with “exhilarating joie de vivre” and shows that we do not have to go through the journey to death alone Six hospice patients, a nurse, and a fundraiser at the Hospice share tender, vulnerable, and funny moments of their lives. Inspired by the musically talented staff, and an intimate filming process, the patients deal with their terminal diagnoses through humour and a passion for music. Strathcarron is one of the largest hospices in Scotland, run as a charity, committed to the highest standards of care – because there is only one chance to get it right! Wajda

We Are Many

This charming film follows young Wadjda – bright, confident and more assertive than her sternly devout teachers would wish – and her quest to own a bike so she can cycle freely beside her best friend Abdullah. The trouble is her harried mother does not have the money and, in Islamic Saudi Arabia, girls are not allowed to ride bicycles. Undeterred, Wadjda enters the school Koran recitation competition in the hope of using the prize money to secure her dream. A wonderful feel-good film about being ten and being true to yourself.

On February 15th 2003 over 15 million people marched against the war in Iraq in over 800 cities around the world. This powerful and passionate documentary tells the story of what became the biggest demonstration in human history. Key figures from the original marches share memories of the moment when the people said No, while the trail is followed from the “dodgy dossier” to the Chilcot inquiry… still delayed six years on. Amirani's documentary stirs memories about the sheer scale of the protests and is a moving tribute to dissent.

At A Glance

Fri 27

Weekly Saturday morning screenings of well-loved family films and kids’ classics. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. In the Hippodrome’s heyday youngsters could get their cinema ticket in exchange for a jeely jar. Once a season we’ll give you the chance to revive the custom (see below). Look out for the Jeely Jar Screening when you can bring a clean jeely jar with matching lid and get two tickets for the price of one. The jars will be used for jam-making in the Georgian Kitchen at Callendar House. This season: Shorts for Middle Ones (see page 17).

AF Autism Friendly. See page 18. AD Audio Description service for blind or partially sighted people which supplies a spoken description of action not revealed by the film’s dialogue. Pick up your headphones from the Hippodrome staff.
