rofessor of chemistry Paul Chirik and his research group at Princeton, where he is currently Professor of Chemistry, are on a mission to turn lead into gold Or, to be more precise, to make lead act like gold Precious metals are instrumental to some of the most widespread and important chemical processes in our world, such as the osmium needed to synthesise fertiliser and the platinum needed to make jeans bendable, shoes sturdy and envelopes sticky The problem is that precious metals are expensive and subject to rampant speculation Chirik is developing ways to get cheap metals, such as iron, work like platinum and replacing the more expensive in common industrial reactions The

re we soon going to dispose of the cheap (US$ <1,000) and fast (a few minutes) sequencing and processing of our genomes to have highly tailored treatments? The challenge in elaborating a new medical model that overcomes the limits of standard care is providing affordable practices that take into account the genetic variability of the patient, going beyond traditional reactive approaches to individual care based on the study of family history, social circumstances, environment and behaviours Aaron Ciechanover is leading an interdisciplinary study at Technion (Israel Institute of Technology) in Haifa that in the future might allow for the identification and characterisation of new disease-specific mo-

lecular markers and drug targets necessary to the design of novel, mechanism-based drugs to modulate the activities of these targets At Falling Walls, Ciechanover, who won the 2004 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and the Research Award 2011 from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, explained how far we are from leaving “one size fits all” medicine to entering a “personalised” one. “We are going to profile patients initially based on their DNA, but we need to go further, on to the proteins.” A revolution involving scientific, ethical, legal and social challenges

s the latest market revolutions expose the competitive weaknesses of Europe and the U.S. through their fiscal and debt issues, they also demonstrate to newcomers like China that the fast pace of globalisation could give rise to unintended consequences, including an inter-connected financial system that could lead to its selfdestruction if unfettered, a sharp rise in savings and capital imbalances at the global level and a worsened income and wealth inequality at home It highlights the need for China to reshape its strategies for economic development and foster reforms to reduce its imbalances. Liu Olin, having held leading roles in missions at the International Monetary Fund, heads the macroeconomic re-

search at CICC, China’s first joint venture investment bank, to provide both institutional and private investors a guide in turbulent markets with an international perspective In Berlin, Dr Liu discussed what solution would better suit the big national debts in the US and EU Rather than external support, she remembers the importance of the market as having a long-term vision, therefore the need not only of liquidity, but a road map for growth No more treaties as gentlemen’s agreements, but real rules enforced to lead the old economies to the future

ngela Merkel, voted several times “the most powerful woman of the world” by Forbes Magazine, has a profound background in the research of power Merkel holds a PhD in physics. After completing her studies in Leipzig, she became a researcher at the Central Institute of Physical Chemistry at the Academy of Science in Berlin Adlershof – until the Berlin Wall fell The young scientist then joined one of the newly founded democratic parties that merged into Helmut Kohl’s centre-right CDU Within ten years, she was party chairwoman, within another five, German Chancellor At the inaugural Falling Walls conference in 2009 Merkel explained the political breakthroughs she envisions for the 21st century

In her widely publicised speech at the Falling Walls Conference 2011 Merkel calls for a breakthrough to a new Europe Solving the dept problem of many Western countries requires an analysis of the real cause of the problem: Societies decide about todays issues without taking into account their future cost The dept problem is only one indicator of non-sustainable policies

hen we refer to somebody as a worm, we are not exactly celebrating his or her relevance in our world. Learning something about nematodes could change this With approximately 1,000,000 species, nematodes, aka roundworms, are the most numerous multi-cellular animals on earth, having successfully adapted to almost every ecosystem In agriculture a nematode may be beneficial or detrimental: the pest-nematodes attack plants and spread viruses, causing a global crop yield loss of $125 billion annually For 20 years, Waceke Wanjohi has taught nematology in universities, developed academic programs and labs, published internationally and established and led projects like the Nematology Initiative of

East and Southern Africa (Niesa), which is effectively improving crop yields in smallholder farming systems in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi and Zimbabwe Waceke Wanjohi presented the benefits of her approach: by interspersing corn with legumes one season, and incorporating the “green manure” from the legumes into the soil before planting corn the next season, the corn yield increases by more than 50 percent Other non-chemical strategies like mixing crops, incorporating organic soil amendments have generated similar results www.falling-walls.com/lectures/ waceke-wanjohi

eople dislike change. Like it or not, individual and collective histories have showcased human aversion, and in some cases, inability, to change course and learn from our mistakes Why do we continue to smoke cigarettes or burn fossil fuels in the face of abundant evidence of the negative consequences? The irrationality behind these examples and others forms the inspirational core of Elke Weber’s work, whose contributions lie at a crossroads between psychology and economics, shedding new light on behavioural models of judgment and decision-making under risk and uncertainty Her uniquely diverse academic career has led her to assume multiple leadership roles at Columbia University, on editorial boards

of numerous journals across disciplines, and on advisory committees of national and international organisations related to the human dimensions of global change With numerous awards to her name for her research on how basic psychological processes like attention, emotion and memory influence perceptions of risk, preference and choice, Elke Weber presented some of her breakthroughs in Behavioural Decision Theory, with the intention of breaking the wall inherent to our aversion to change and linking it to technical and social innovation
