SUMMER
GETTING TO Falls Getting to Falls Creek is easy and takes less time than you think. The Victorian High Country is a same-day trip from anywhere in Victoria or New South Wales. If you are in the North East region, it takes less time to drive here than it takes to watch a movie.
FROM ALBURY Falls Creek is the closest alpine resort to Albury and a great destination for a day trip or “next stop”. The travel time is between 1½ to 2 hours and a spectacular drive through the Kiewa Valley. The best way is to cross the Murray River into Wodonga and then follow the signs to Mt Beauty along the Kiewa Valley Highway.
FROM BRIGHT Falls Creek is only 1¼ hours drive away from this tourist hotspot. The “Tawonga Gap” route is an experience in itself with its incredible lookout over Mt Beauty & Bogong at the top of the climb. Simply head along the Great Alpine Road towards Harrietville/Mt Hotham and the turnoff to Mt Beauty is five minutes later on your left. Turn right once you finish “the Gap” and you are half-way there.
FROM WANGARATTA & MYRTLEFORD Wangaratta & Myrtleford offer a different mountain pass; 2 hours and 1½ hours drive respectively. Drive the Great Alpine Rd through the township of Myrtleford and 5 minutes later you will be at the “Happy Valley Hotel” in Ovens (just after Ray’s Ski Shop). The turnoff to Mt Beauty and Falls Creek is on your left along the Happy Valley Road or “Rosewhite Gap”.

ADVENTURE & Outdoors Falls Creek’s greatest asset is the natural environment that surrounds us and summer is the best time to get out and experience it.
WALKING & HIKING With trails to suit all abilities, a variety of walks originate from Falls Creek village. These range from easy ½ hour strolls and scenic vantage points to more challenging day or overnight hikes. Such treks take in alpine wildflowers, Rocky Valley Lake, historic cattlemen’s huts and even wild brumbies. We’ve put together our best walks in and around the Resort for you to try. Check out the fold-out maps in this guide.
MOUNTAIN BIKE TOURING There are some excellent long distance touring trails to take riders from Falls Creek to Mt Beauty. Choose from the comparatively flat McKay Creek Trail to the long descents of Timms Spur or the steep rough terrain of Fainter Track. These trails are not for the uninitiated but offer a unique experience for the serious rider heading to Falls. Pick up a Long Distance Touring Trails map from Visitor Information.

MOUNT MCKAY Mt McKay is the highest drivable peak in Australia (1,850m) and offers an incredible view of Falls Creek and the surrounding plains as far out as Mt Hotham, Mt. Bogong and Mt. Feathertop. Make your way over the ski fields for a ‘top of the world’ view. This is also an excellent place to watch the dramatic high country sunset with a glass of bubbles.
HISTORIC HUTS Take in the history of the High Country by riding or walking to some of the early cattlemans’ huts in the region. Built as early as the 1880’s, nearby Wallace’s, Cope and Tawonga huts are easy to access and offer perfect spots for a picnic. You can find directions to Wallaces and Cope huts in the enclosed walking trail maps.

WATER Activities It just isn’t a Summer holiday without somewhere to cool off. Take a dip in Rocky Valley Lake, right in Falls Creek’s backyard.
ROCKY VALLEY LAKESIDE If you’ve had it with the crowds on the beach, try some lakeside serenity this year. Falls Creek is around 10 degrees cooler than the valleys below and it also boasts the country’s highest alpine lake. Relax on the grassy banks of Rocky Valley Lake - an easy 2km walk from the village. The crystal clear water offers a shallow and safe descent for swimming and is some of the cleanest water around.
SAILING & WATERSPORTS Did you know you can sail at 1600m above sea level on a lake spanning 250 hectares? Don’t leave the boat getting dusty in the shed. Bring along your sailboat or dinghy to Falls Creek this Summer and explore the expansive Rocky Valley Lake. Launching ramps are located either side of the Dam Wall. The water is also perfect for kayaks, canoes and paddleboards.

FISHING Falls Creek is renowned for excellent Brown and Rainbow Trout fishing. It is also a year on since the release of Chinook Salmon into Rocky Valley Lake. Boat ramps allow for launching of small boats on either side of the Dam Wall. There are also good spots to try on the banks of Rocky Valley Lake, Pretty Valley Lake (head up the Pretty Valley/Mt McKay Road near the Nordic Bowl) and Lake Guy at Bogong Village.
WATERFALLS The carpark at the Kiewa Valley River crossing (between Falls Creek and Bogong Village) leads to Fainter Falls, one of the most impressive waterfalls in the region. A moderate 700m trail through the alpine environment leads to an excellent viewing platform. Closer to the village, take the short path to Falls Creek Falls. Directions are included with the walking trail map in this guide.

Black Trail Run: Considered an excellent Black run, this trail offers a good deal of elevation gain and loss despite its short distance. The trail takes in some truly spectacular terrain with beautiful distant views of the surrounding mountains and steep, technical running through thick forest. Definitely one for the memory banks!
ICONIC Walks There are so many walks and hikes at Falls Creek you might not know where to start. Our Iconic Walks highlight two of the favourites showcasing the incredible High Plains and Alpine National Park.
THE PACKHORSE HERITAGE TRAIL Walk along the Packhorse Heritage Trail you are literally following in the footsteps of the settlers who pioneered the High Country. The trail follows the original route used by early cattlemen and their mounts in the 1800’s to access the Bogong High Plains from the Kiewa Valley. Centuries on it has served as an important linkage between Howmans Gap and Falls Creek for generations of miners, travellers and engineers developing the local hydroelectric scheme. This trail was lost after decades of disuse until the aftermath of the 2003 bushfires uncovered its existence. Reconstruction in 2010/11 saw the Packhorse Trail open once again. Look just ahead of the Gully entrance to Falls Creek for the start of this 4km point to point hike.
