We’re building on the pioneering spirit of our past to inspire the visionaries, storytellers and creative leaders of the future. As the UK’s No. 1 Arts University, we’re perfectly placed to help you realise your potential and turn your passion into a career.
Join us at Falmouth and follow your creative path.
Professor Emma Hunt Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive
A close-knit community. Astoundingly creative. And committed to providing you with the perfect learning environment to excel in your chosen discipline.
You’ll find an ocean of opportunity at Falmouth University. There are endless good reasons to study a degree here, but we’ve listed 25 on the following pages for starters. If you visit us online – or in person, ideally, on one of our Open Days – we’re sure you’ll find many more.
““Cornwall is an amazing place to study. To be immersed in nature, with pioneering artistry and emerging culture so close by, is a rare thing to find.””

WE’RE HEADLINE NEWS
We may have mentioned this already –and we know that league tables are only part of the story when it comes to choosing where to study. But we’re proud to lead the way among arts universities, with a ranking that reflects student satisfaction and research excellence.

WE WAYGOBACK 02.
It was more than 120 years ago that students first put pencil and brush to paper in the original Falmouth School of Art. The creative spark nurtured in 1902 is now ablaze in a thriving university, spread across two campuses, where the artists, wordsmiths, gamers and designers of tomorrow are learning to make their mark. While our students are as likely now to work in pixels as they are in paint, or translate a still life drawing into digital format, the thread of creativity still runs through everything we do.
Our spectacular coastal location has been described as a creative departure point from which you can literally and metaphorically fly – a place to spread your wings, take off and soar. This extraordinary setting has inspired adventurers, explorers and pioneers over the centuries. Cornwall is an invigorating place to study and has long been a muse to artists with its natural beauty and quality of light. Where better than Falmouth to take a leap into your creative future?
WE LIVE LIFE ON THE EDGE 03.
04. WE WORSHIP DAWN
Affectionately referred to as the Queen of Falmouth University, novelist and comedian Dawn French was installed as our Chancellor in 2015. She has since attended every graduation ceremony to personally congratulate each student, giving out not just degree scrolls but chocolate coins (Dawn’s doubloons) and her very own words of wisdom.
“‘Look at who’s wearing the crown and ask yourself, who’s the boss?’”
|YOU|CAN| |FIT|IN|-|AND| |STAND|OUT| hello
We’re proud of our diverse and welcoming community. Students from different cultures and countries are on the same page, sharing ideas, experiences and a passion for creativity. To fit in at Falmouth, you don’t have to do anything more than be yourself. “I was so scared of what people would think about me as a trans male, but I’ve had such a friendly and positive experience here,” says Television BA student Levi. “What’s the one piece of advice I’d give to people about to set sail on their university journey? Be unapologetically you.”

IHQP
Nestled in lush, leafy, sub-tropical gardens, Falmouth Campus is truly one of a kind. Artists and designers are drawn to its magical setting, which affords a level of creative and intellectual space not easily found in big, bustling metropolitan universities. Airy studios and workshops, a dedicated writers’ room and a recording studio provide the perfect context to think clearly and independently. It’s a campus that crackles with creative energy.
10
life and a base for everything from fun film events to drag bingo and open mic nights.
Situated just 10 minutes apart by bus, our campuses are within easy reach of the town and some of the region’s best beaches. Both feature the cutting-edge resources and services you’ll need to excel, including libraries and archives, learning zones and quiet study areas, IT suites, shops and cafes.

Discover your passion and run with it. We’ll encourage and support you to dive in and have a go, to see where paths might take you and where your talents lie. Gina Goodman’s love of the sea led her to study Falmouth’s Marine & Natural History Photography BA, where she developed a lifelong obsession for shooting our cold waters and kelp forests.
“I couldn’t have imagined how beautiful our UK marine habitats are,” says Gina, who grew up in the Cayman Islands and now lectures on our underwater photography team. “The team was amazing when I was on the course. I hope I pass that same enthusiasm to our current students.”

WE INNOVATE
Where would we be without creativity?
It’s in everything, and when used in partnership with technology it has the power to make positive change to people’s lives.
Falmouth University’s world-class research is investigating the potential of this fusion. Our academics are exploring game-based solutions to improve the mental health of adolescents affected by trauma. They’re recording soundscapes to identify changes in wild habitats around the globe and studying how satellite technology could boost the delivery of effective healthcare in rural communities.
Being taught in a research-active environment means you’ll benefit from their intellectual findings and new discoveries, developing a curious mindset and creative approach of your own – like Sustainable Product Design BA student Charlie Ruck. Charlie designed future-proofed, fully recyclable glasses that could offer poorly resourced communities access to quality optical eyewear, a concept that went forward to both the James Dyson Award and the Braun Prize in 2021. With a new Flexi Glasses prototype currently in the pipeline, Charlie is now working on a project with INEOS Britannia, the British sailing team challenging for the America’s Cup.

OUR FESTIVALS FASCINATE
Where else will you find the streets filled with the sound of shanty songs as you jostle to see the Barnacle Buoys?
Or a celebration of sun (sometimes), surf and international music acts? Cornwall’s festival calendar just gets bigger and better. Here are a few of the county’s finest.
Boardmasters
The UK’s famous beach fest on the sands at Watergate Bay. Expect big waves, epic raves, headline acts and open-air parties.
The Great Estate Festival
Music and madness, hip-hop karaoke and even Madame Wong’s House of Wrong feature at this rambunctious garden fete.
International Sea Shanty Festival
The top shanty groups take over our University town for this free nautical knees-up, which recalls Falmouth’s seafaring past.
Falmouth Book Festival
Storytellers unite: this new literary fest stars heavyweight authors, beloved actors, renowned environmentalists and more.

WE STAND UNITED
You can’t miss the Students’ Union (SU) office at our Penryn Campus – just look for the artwork outside. It’s where you’ll find your SU presidents, whose mission is to make sure your time as a student here is as productive and enjoyable as possible. As an SU member you can stand as a Rep, help fundraise, become politically active through campaigning work or join some of the 130 or so clubs and societies on offer. The SU team (also at Falmouth Campus) organises social events and offers support in all areas of student life.

13. HIDDEN OUR CORNERS
Step through a gateway and find a shady hammock, a herb garden or a secret grotto. Or take a peep at what is perhaps the smallest art gallery in existence, a series of street windows providing a portal to the work of Falmouth’s Fine Art students. Our campuses are full of these not-so-obvious nooks and crannies – quiet places and unusual spaces to seek out for a different perspective on life.

WE|LEAD|BY EXAMPLE 17.
Alongside lending their expertise to budding creatives, Falmouth University’s academic staff are out there leading the way – exploring the polar regions, writing Booker Prize longlisted novels, collecting Olivier Awards for directing comedy plays and breaking new ground in the gaming industry.
Our performance lecturers are up on stage and our costume experts are commentating on current trends. We can even count a BAFTA award-winning filmmaker among our ranks. By practising their craft, they’re able to share real-world experiences and the latest industry insights.
Above: Dr Huw Lewis-Jones, seafarer, author and environmental historian. Right: Distinguished Professor Mark Jenkin, director of BAFTA-winning Bait.
Exploring, experimenting… it’s all part of the creative process. At Falmouth you can find your space and develop your style, wherever your inspiration takes you. We’d encourage you to break the rules, except there are none.
For her final year collection We’re All Warped, Fashion Design BA student Georgia Mitchell combined looks from the 90s hip-hop scene with the distorting effect of a fisheye lens, evoking the sense of empowered feminism developing at the time. Georgia’s ideas came alive with help from a team of top hair stylists and make-up artists in a full-on fashion shoot, directed by Fashion Photography students.

Spotlight on: Will Wightman
For a low-budget film shot as a final-year project for his Television BA degree, Will Wightman’s Heart Failure has punched well above its weight. The comedy, which is set to electronic dance music and follows the story of Frank and Lizzie from their one-night stand to final break-up, has won 15 awards, screened at nearly 40 festivals and was longlisted as Best Short Film at the British Independent Film Awards 2022.
“I tried to create a film that really reflected being Gen Z,” said Will, who launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the project. “It was inspired by a lot of my personal dramas at university and also those of people I know. The shoot took place in Falmouth, both in my house and on location around the town centre. I loved living there so much; in the film I wanted to celebrate the place that’s been so good to me.
“Shooting on the Arri Classic with Sigma lenses gave the film a high production value,” added Will, who has taken up a director’s assistant role with Blinkink. “It’s thanks to the University that we had access to such great kit, but most important were the creative relationships I formed on my course. We had a super-talented, dedicated group of people.”

Spotlight on: Nathan TippingStevenson
Architecture BA graduate Nathan TippingStevenson’s projects have certainly turned heads, winning University awards and a nomination for The Architects’ Journal student prize. But his success in the 2022 Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) President’s Medals competition is set to catapult him into the limelight. His proposal for a Museum of Mining within a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Cornwall, Leow Keskorra ha Dyski: A Place to Assemble and Learn, earned him the prestigious Serjeant Award for Excellence in Architectural Drawing.
“As a student, the scale of the competition and the publicity surrounding it served as a great source of inspiration,” says Nathan, whose final-year project was among a record number of entries from universities worldwide. “My only aspiration was that my work would hold up among what looked like brilliant nominations. The news that I’d won came as a very welcome surprise.
“I’ve always been drawn to the creation of physical things,” he adds. “Falmouth afforded me the time and resources to explore and experiment with my work and take ownership and care over whatever process I used. It never felt as though my passions were in jeopardy. The ideas I presented were valued and treated with respect and as a result it was great to feel the confidence in both myself and my work grow.”

“There’s a lot of playful experimentation,” says George Jasper Stone of the digital world he works in, where he creates surreal natural landscapes populated by humanoid robots and futuristic creatures. His extraordinary experimental artworks, in demand by the likes of Converse, Selfridges and Valentino, have graced the cover of Gay Times and were admired by fashion design legend Virgil Abloh.
Now a master of CGI, George’s roots are in more traditional mediums. “At Falmouth, the focus was on nurturing you, no matter how vague your ideas,” he recalls of his Fine Art BA. “I started drawing. My tutor was incredible –instead of asking us to narrow down, it was
more about concepts and experimentation. I was surrounded by like-minded people and the most beautiful scenery. It just felt right.”
After a work placement on the Kingsman 2 film and an internship as graphics assistant and PA to the set designer on the Netflix series The Crown, George moved into 3D animations and working in virtual environments.
“You can immerse yourself, to make things as real as possible,” he says of his creations, seen on billboards, as live in-store visuals and even on digital screens on London’s Old Street roundabout. “When you think about how to build something in 3D, you begin to see the real world in a completely different way – almost how a painter would look at an object. It’s a fantastic, weird journey, so inspiring. It’s limitless.”

Spotlight on: Nat Tallents
With impressive credentials as a chef –she appeared on BBC’s MasterChef: The Professionals and was a National Chef of the Year semi-finalist – Nat Tallents nevertheless found herself at a career crossroads. “During lockdown I started to wonder what was next for me,” she says. “I wanted to operate more sustainably in my own life but was unsure how to apply that to the hospitality industry, where I’ve worked for more than 20 years. Falmouth’s Sustainable Tourism Management BA course screamed out to me.”
While she studied, Nat worked as a development chef and hospitality manager at The Lost Gardens of Heligan. “It was all about time management and knowing my limits,” she explains. “My social life was lacking and I pulled a few all-nighters to meet course deadlines, but the lecturers were really patient and encouraging and I felt supported and championed. I finished the first year on some top grades.
“The degree gave me a higher level of understanding of current issues, marketing, business and the economy,” adds Nat, who also took part in BBC’s Great British Menu before graduating in 2022 with first-class honours. “At Heligan, we’re now focused on how we can be more sustainable and regenerative. I’m also studying food security at postgraduate level with the aim of working more strategically in hospitality and tourism.”

Spotlight on: Adriana Ciontea
Adriana Ciontea’s career path has come full circle since she graduated from Falmouth’s Creative Writing BA in 2019. After completing a master’s in publishing she returned to the South West and launched the magazine Seaborne, an ocean-inspired treasure trove of writing and artwork. She also secured a “dream job” with Surfers Against Sewage.
“I picked Falmouth because of the coastal location – I thought it would be an inspiring place to study Creative Writing,” explains Romanian-born Adriana. “The course was well balanced, covering a lot of different areas, which offered me a great foundation for further study. I work in communications and still use the writing principles I learned. I’m so happy to be able to go to work every day and know that I’m making a difference.
“Falmouth equipped me not just with essential skills but also a network of inspiring people with whom I’m still in touch today. Highlights of the course included my involvement with two publishing projects. Working on those live briefs with industry specialists was where I truly built my experience and knowledge.
“I’ve always loved the sea, but my time at Falmouth really honed my passion to celebrate and protect it,” she adds. “Producing Seaborne is one way I can do that, because it combines my love of writing, the sea and conservation in one neat little package.”

Spotlight on: Charlotte Garner
“A definite pinch-me moment,” says freelance photographer Charlotte Garner of her first shoot with Olympian Tom Daley for his Made With Love brand. “I love Tom’s ethos and passion. I think it really resonates with the imagery we’ve created.”
With Candy Kittens, Tweezerman and fashion accessories designer Sophia Webster now among her clients, Charlotte’s career has sky-rocketed since she graduated from Falmouth’s Fashion Photography BA in 2016. It started with an internship at London’s Big Sky Studios, which led to a full-time studio assistant role and the chance to meet fashion photographers including Peter Lindbergh, Luchford and Mert & Marcus.
“Falmouth gave me an insight into the fashion industry and what to expect, enabling me to make a smooth transition into the world of work,” she says. “I gained invaluable knowledge on both the technical and conceptual side of photography and in many different mediums. We also collaborated with students on other courses to work in teams that mimicked the real fashion industry, with hair and makeup artists, stylists and art directors.
“Most importantly, the course allowed me to explore my creativity and be who I wanted to be, as a photographer,” she continues. “Big Sky was a great stepping-stone. I then freelanced in fashion production, working with photography icons such as Cass Bird and Walker, which enabled me to really understand how everything comes together within the shoot.”
Charlotte continued to shoot her own projects on the side, building her portfolio, and two years ago was finally able to focus on her passion by becoming a freelance photographer.
“After lots of pitching, personal projects and social media engagement, I’ve gained some amazing clients,” says Charlotte, whose work is a mixture of fashion, beauty and product photography alongside imaginative GIFs. “Colour plays a big part and is something I always seek in the planning process. When shoot day comes along and the images go live, it always fills me with joy.”

“Failure is a scary beast, but like all fears it can be conquered,” says Jake Whittaker of the challenge of launching three-man indie game development team Knights of Borria into the burgeoning games industry. Jake had joined forces at Falmouth with fellow Games Development BA students Max Amaden and Chris Jones during their final year to make Rustbreaker, a post-apocalyptic game where players construct a trawler from scavenged metal and direct a crew in battles of tactics and mass destruction. When Rustbreaker was then awarded development funding by Tranzfuser, the team started to believe they might make it in the real world.
“We were told we’d be dialling this up from really hard, which it was already, to nightmare mode,” says Chris, who progressed to master’s level study at Falmouth in Game Design. “But we knew we wanted to take the company further, so we said ‘Yeah, let’s bring on the challenge.’ After development in Falmouth’s Launchpad venture studio, Knights of Borria continues to create “soulful, fun and outright weird” games and is heading towards a deal with a major publisher.
“Making games is a long process,” Chris adds. “There was concern at first that we were such a small team, but we’ve had so much support and guidance from the University. We’re on our way to becoming fully fledged game developers.”

Spotlight on: Kelly Morris
“There’s nothing quite like the anticipation of standing on stage at the top of the show,” says Kelly Morris of that moment before the curtain opens on SIX: The Musical at London’s Vaudeville Theatre, to reveal a huge audience. “Suddenly, there’s nowhere to hide.”
Kelly secured the role on the Tony Award-winning show as the bassist, Bessie, in early 2022. It was soon after they graduated from Falmouth’s Popular Music BA in 2019 that the pandemic pulled the plug on the live performance industry, but Kelly’s versatility as a musician stood in their favour. “Falmouth had allowed me to explore so many corners of the pop music industry,” they explain. “I began the course planning to focus on songwriting and performing as a singer and guitarist, but later decided to develop skills as a live sound and studio engineer. I had full access to all the recording studios, rehearsal rooms and music gear that Falmouth had to offer.
“With the freedom and support to choose what I wanted to specialise in, I felt comfortable entering new areas – which proved crucial when taking the leap into musical theatre. I don’t think anything could have prepared me for the intensity of SIX, but, with the support of the other band members and the music directors, I’m gradually growing in confidence.”

Spotlight on: William Fortescue
William Fortescue had long been a fan of photographer Jonathan Scott when he bumped into his idol while out in Kenya.
“I asked him how he got to spend his life photographing wildlife and he told me to check out Falmouth’s Marine & Natural History Photography BA,” recalls William. “I applied that very afternoon, not even knowing where Falmouth was. I was just so excited to study wildlife photography.”
Five years after graduation, William released his first coffee table book, The Last Stand, a culmination of three year’s work in East Africa. An extended first exhibition in late 2022, The Art of Survival, made him the youngest wildlife photographer to have a two-month solo show in London.
“The course gave me a great base to spring from, but things didn’t always run smoothly,” says William, who put up marquees, mowed lawns and packed eggs, among other random jobs. “I focused on finding an image style that could make me stand out. I was prepared to put years into this and I’m 100% still finding my feet in the industry. It was totally worth it though, as I now spend every day working for myself and on projects I love. There’s talk of a few more exhibitions and I’m heading back to the Himalayas, Tanzania, the Arctic and Kenya to work on some new images.”

Online courses: how you’ll study
If you’re looking for flexibility while learning new skills and enhancing your career prospects, then an online course could be the ideal option.
Futureproof your career – or pursue a new profession – from anywhere in the world. Designed by our award-winning digital learning team, these courses offer the same expert teaching and industry connections as our on-campus degrees. You’ll be encouraged to push your limits, explore your creativity and develop professional skills and expertise that will prepare you for industry as you join a global community of Falmouth creatives defining the future.
How we work
You’ll learn from practicing professionals via online lectures and webinars, where you can connect and share ideas with fellow students. You’ll use our dedicated Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) which allows you to engage with what’s being taught, ask questions and collaborate.
Our lectures are pre-recorded and re-watchable, so you can replay the live webinars if you’re not able to dial in. Your course materials will be released weekly, giving you plenty of time to plan your workload.
Creative collaboration
At Falmouth, we encourage collaboration and the sharing of ideas. This might mean participating in thought-provoking discussions with fellow students or working together on projects to develop your teamwork skills. This is vital to helping you feel part of your academic community and will give you the chance to explore each other’s creative boundaries. While you’re studying, you’ll be supported academically by tutors. Your module tutor will offer feedback on your work and will be your first point of contact for any academic queries. They’ll run a weekly live webinar, usually in an evening (UK time), which is also recorded for easy access if the timing doesn’t fit your schedule.
Supportive tutors and Student Advisors
The Student Advisor team can offer wellbeing support and answer any questions not directly related to your course material. They are contactable via email, phone, WhatsApp and video meetings to help you make the most of your online learning experience and to guide you towards any further support you need.
Our IT team will also be on hand to offer free technical support and advice, to keep you connected while you study.
144
The right balance
You’ll learn through a combination of directed and independent study, working within a schedule but with the flexibility to set your own routine and to spend extra time on certain modules should you need to. It’s worth bearing in mind the commitment required. The study expectation per week totals between 40-50 hours for a full-time undergraduate degree and 27-33 hours for a parttime undergraduate degree, dependent upon experience and aptitude.
These courses are designed especially to be studied from home, so you will not have access to our campus facilities. Studying online need not mean studying alone, however, as you’ll be part of a connected student community. Optional face-to-face events offer a great opportunity to visit the University, meet other students and tutors and to explore course-related topics through additional activities and discussions. Input by guest lecturers will offer a wider professional context for your learning and a deeper insight into a range of creative industries.
Creative chemistry
As an online student, you can still benefit from the hotbed of creativity here at Falmouth. Our Collaboration module is shared by all online courses, giving writers, designers, image-makers and entrepreneurs the chance to work together to share their ideas and approaches.
