WHY IT WORKS After 181 years of people paying for it from newsagents and street vendors the London Evening Standard has announced it will become a FREE newspaper. Having the paper thrust into people’s hands will help to overcome what managing director Andrew Mullins described as “many competing distractions to potential readers”.

Stefano Hatfield, former editor of The London Paper believes FREE papers will attract a demographic previously hard to reach. He added: “From my experience working on Metro in New York and now thelondonpaper, I know that these kind of freesheets appeal mostly to young people, aged 18 to 35, who do not currently read a newspaper. “This generation never really developed a newspaper habit.”
