Taste of Ulster Charter Each establishment that has met the standards and passed the inspection by Taste of Ulster adheres to the following Charter. Article 1 The member’s duty is to source, use and promote local food where possible. Nick Price Chairman, Taste of Ulster Taste of Ulster was set up to identify and unify high quality provision in the industry, and through this re-launch we have the opportunity not only to put ourselves on the global market but also to boost the local economy and support the agricultural community. The existence of a brand such as Taste Of Ulster is imperative to ensure consumers can be confident of what they are being served when they sit down to a meal anywhere in Northern Ireland. Members sign up to the Taste of Ulster Charter that asks them to source where possible local foods, sometimes this is an effort, but that is part of the challenge. Every ÂŁ5 spent on the local economy has a multiplying effect of three, which means rather than spending it on imports you get a ÂŁ15 benefit to the local economy. Members also have a sense of identity and belonging. It shows locals and visitors what they care about and they are serious about sourcing locally. This year will not be an easy one for anyone in business. Some people are very positive and say that a downturn is an opportunity to reassess our businesses and focus even harder on controlling costs and giving our customers value for money. One way of doing this is to talk to our suppliers and find out what is in season, good value, tasty and local, in order to give our local economy a helping hand at the same time. The members of Taste of Ulster would like to extend a warm welcome to our visitors. Our guide has been one of the most successful we have ever distributed and this year we have had to increase our print run even more due to its popularity. We hope you have a great experience on your journey through this part of Ireland and enjoy the people and our produce. If we can sell it to people that come and visit us then there is the potential to export. The food tourism industry is starting to become an important issue and we have to get policies in place now. We need to be at the top, we have the finest produce here and through the support of Taste of Ulster the top is not out of reach. I am delighted to be in a position to make a difference and to push Taste of Ulster forward.
9
Michael Bell Executive Director, Taste of Ulster 2009 sees Taste of Ulster in its 19th year and I am delighted that membership has continued to increase. With 122 successful establishments featured in this year’s guide, never before have we been able to offer so many quality establishments. Customers can be confident that no matter where they are in Northern Ireland they can visit a Taste of Ulster establishment and sit down to a meal of quality Ulster cuisine using only the best locally sourced products! As a subsidiary of Northern Ireland Food & Drink Association, the vision of Taste of Ulster is to develop and celebrate excellence in local cuisine and hospitality. Our aim is to promote good restaurants; hotels and other eating places as well as quality producers who we believe offer excellence in local food, service and authentic innovative Ulster cuisine. To become a Taste of Ulster member all applicants must sign a Charter committing them to source local foods as much as possible. Each establishment is then independently inspected by a ‘mystery shopper’. Only those applicants who pass their inspection and prove they are Taste of Ulster creditable will make it into the guide and become a Taste of Ulster member. Inspections are not easy and this year’s standard has been the toughest yet! Despite this application for membership has grown by 12 per cent from last year with actual membership rising by an encouraging 9 per cent. The failure rate each year shows that Taste of Ulster is committed to offering customers only the best. Customers can be sure each establishment featured in the guide has been willing to test themselves against the tough Taste of Ulster standard, a testament to their dedication to delivering the best. Taste of Ulster is guided by a varied steering group, chaired by one of its original members, Nick Price of Nicks Warehouse. The steering group is committed to the pursuit of excellence in food preparation, service and the potential of food in Northern Ireland. I hope you enjoy the good local food that Taste of Ulster accredited establishments serve.

COUNTY ANTRIM makes up the northeast of Ulster and is known for its breath taking views and dynamic atmosphere. County Antrim is famous for its coast road which has been voted fifth in Jacobs Creek’s must-see destinations, beating the likes of the Grand Canyon. Peppered with woodlands and waterfalls it is easy to see why this shoreline has become a favourite driving route. Separated from Scotland’s coastline by only a 13-mile channel, the highest point of Antrim, Torr Head, is drenched in history. In the first century the hill was occupied by Dunwarry Fort and in World War Two it was used as a look-out post. Today it remains the only fixed net salmon fishery still in use along the coast. But for all the scenic wonders in Antrim, the county has become the ultimate shopping destination in Ireland. Boasting some of the most exclusive boutiques in Europe as well as some of the most popular high street shops it has something for everybody. Antrim’s nightlife is gaining a reputation with its large and historical auditoriums, drawing in some of the biggest acts and productions in the world. TOP THREE ATTRACTIONS
County Antrim
Bushmills Founded in 1608, The Old Bushmills Distillery is the oldest whiskey maker in the world, and the only distillery that uses 100 per cent malted barley in its whiskies in Ireland. Taking its name from nearby River Bush, it is well worth a visit. Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge Hovering over an 80 feet drop into the sea, the famous Carricka-Rede rope bridge was made of a single rope handrail with widely spaced slats. Used by fishermen travelling back and forth from the small island it was fitted with a safer caged bridge for tourists to cross. The Giant's Causeway Situated along the coast of Antrim, the Giant's Causeway is world-famous for its spectacular rock formations, which are uniquely hexagonal. There are many theories explaining the shape of the rocks, but the local favourite is down to a naughty giant called Finn McCool. DID YOU KNOW? Londonderry Arms Hotel
McGeowns Bar & Restaurant
This traditional hotel is set in the picturesque coastal village of Carnlough, nestled at the foot of Glencloy, the second of the Nine Glens of Antrim on the award-winning Antrim Coast Road, which forms a core part of the Causeway Coastal Route.
Once an old coaching inn, McGeown’s has quite a history. Situated in the idyllic village of Glenavy, the pub has been offering shelter to locals and visitors for centuries. According to local lore King William of Orange’s second-in-command Duke Frederick of Schomberg stayed at McGeown’s when it was a coaching inn before heading to the Battle of the Boyne.
The hotel was built in 1848 as a Coaching Inn by Lady Londonderry - hence the name - and celebrated its 160th anniversary last year. The hotel has established a reputation for good home-cooked food, simply and freshly prepared. The hotel, with its Georgian charm and friendly welcome, is a popular dining spot for locals in the area.
Nowadays the bar and restaurant is still giving travellers a warm welcome with an open fire, soft lighting and friendly staff. Operating under the current proprietor since October 2007, McGeown’s has established a reputation for great food and great value.
Chef Manus Jamison has been heading up the team at the hotel for over ten years, serving some of the best local produce with flair and style.
The Backroom Bar and Parlour Restaurant offer menus with a mix of modern and traditional dishes. Head chef Andrew McConville uses the best local produce including Irish lamb, beef, seafood, dairy, fruit and vegetables.
The modern Irish menu includes the best locally produced food; beef and lamb from the Antrim Hills, fresh fish from the Atlantic Ocean and vegetables harvested from the rich farmland.
The restaurant also offers an extensive vegetarian and gluten free menu, which sets it apart from other pubs and restaurants.

COUNTY ARMAGH is the smallest of the six counties but is jam packed with historical and cultural artefacts and is home to many nature reserves and forest parks. In the fourth century Armagh was inhabited by the Ulaid, or Ulstermen, and ruled by the Red Branch who made the small town their capital. Eventually they were driven out by the Three Collas who went on to rule for another eight centuries. These days Armagh is a recognised city because of its impressive Cathedrals, becoming known as the city of scholars and saints as it seats both the Protestant and Catholic archbishops. For nature enthusiasts Armagh is the place to be. Dubbed the Orchard County it grows some of the finest apples in the world thanks to its fertile soil. BELFAST is the capital city of Northern Ireland and is nestled in the southeast of County Antrim. Taken from the Irish Beal Feirste, the name literally means ‘mouth of the sandbank’ referencing the Belfast Lough, which helped it trade and grow into a city. Traditionally Belfast was the centre for the Irish linen industry, tobacco production, rope-making and shipbuilding. The main shipbuilders, Harland and Wolff, built the ill-fated RMS Titanic and were known as the largest shipyard in the world in the 20th century. Belfast has since undergone a major regeneration becoming a popular tourist and shopping destination. The newly opened Victoria Square centre is a must see when visiting the city. Its unique and modern design includes a 360 degree view of Belfast as well as fantastic shops and food outlets. With the Gothic style building of Queen’s University, St Anne’s Cathedral and Belfast City Hall to visit you get a real taste of the city’s history. TOP THREE ATTRACTIONS

Belfast Eye Just like the one in London, the Belfast Eye is a Ferris Wheellike structure that offers views over Belfast from 200 feet. It is situated at the side of Belfast City Hall and is opened all year round. Open Bus Tours Several guided bus tours leave the city centre every day in a hop on hop off fashion, and gives tourists and locals alike a running history into the buildings, murals and sights of the city. Titanic’s Dock and Pump-House The Pump-House was the centre of Harland and Wolff’s operation during the construction of the great White Star Liners. You can take a free guided tour around the building and call into the site’s visitors’ centre. DID YOU KNOW? The hills that sit northwest in Belfast were the inspiration behind the story Gulliver’s Travels. The author Jonathan Swift said the hills looked like a sleeping giant safe-guarding the city.

The most famous of these hills are the Mourne Mountains, which is made up of granite and boasts the highest peak in Northern Ireland, towering at a staggering 2,796 feet. Downpatrick is one of the most ancient and historic towns in Ireland. Once known as Rath Celtair, its name was changed to honour Saint Patrick, who is thought to be buried within the grounds of Down Cathedral, along with the remains of Saint Colmcille and Saint Bridget. Downpatrick’s town jail saw its fair share of executions during the 18th century and today it is home to Down County Museum. With restored prison cells and life-sized figures it offers a unique glimpse into life at that time. County Down has also been home to many of the world’s greatest writers, including CS Lewis, who inspired by the beautiful scenery, created the magical world of Narnia. Patrick Brontë, the father of writers Anne, Charlotte and Emily Brontë, was also born in County Down and the area he grew up in is now known as Brontë Homeland. Today County Down is well established as a place to come for relaxing. Royal County Down golf course has fantastic views, and there is plenty of beach fun in Newcastle, a bustling town filled with shops and pubs, caravans and boating, a bowling green and amusements.

The idyllic location combined with the extensive menu makes Pier 36 the perfect dining experience. The restaurant recently won the Northern Ireland Tourism Award for Taste of Northern Ireland.
Oakley Fayre was opened 30 years ago by the Kearney family and is currently being run by their son. The eatery has recently been transformed into an ultra-light and fresh space. The coffee shop serves freshly prepared dishes using locally sourced produce. The menu offers a vast array of dishes from a daily special two course meal to the traditional Ulster fry, using homemade potato and soda bread. Ten years ago the former pub underwent a mammoth transformation. The gastro pub serves bar snacks and light meals all day. The food is presented and cooked to perfection, with a highly impressive vegetarian menu and fish featuring as a specialty.
The cafe is also a bakery and the fresh cream pastries and traybakes prove very popular with customers.
Staff take special pride in using organic produce and the pork, ham and bacon all comes from nearby Forthill Farm, which is run by Kenny Gracey in Tandragee. Son Jody Waterworth ensures they keep a quality stock of wines to enhance your dining experience. Romas Restaurant first opened its doors in the early 1990s and has went on to become one of the most successful eateries in the area.
The Saltwater Brig Pub and Restaurant is a one of a kind eatery; it has been serving quality food and drink since 1765.
Set in a stunning two storey Georgian-fronted building it hosts a lounge bar downstairs, à la carte and bistro upstairs. Located in Newtownards town centre, Roma’s is fully licensed with the house specialities including fresh fish, steak and bistro dishes. Original paintings and Guinness memorabilia ranging from the earliest ads adorn the walls, giving the bar a homely and familiar feel. The dining area is set in a semi-private room, perfect for families with children and is close to the games room which has a plasma screen, pool table and a juke box. The open fire and stone walls gives the place a rustic feel which is particularly popular during the winter months. Fermanagh is the hub of the southwest and with one of the highest rates of business start ups in Northern Ireland, has a thriving entrepreneurial culture. The town of Enniskillen, which splits Lough Erne in two, is a vibrant continental centre featuring shops and pubs as well as historic charm. Dubbed Northern Ireland’s Lake District, exploring Lough Erne by land or by boat offers visitors just a slice of what this county has to offer. The Fermanagh lakelands are also a haven for fishing. Fermanagh is well known for its cycling trails. With varying difficulties and lengths, the routes go through the stunning lakeland scenery. TOP THREE ATTRACTIONS

LOCATED on the banks of both the River Foyle and River Bann, the advantages of County Londonderry to early traders led them to create a new county just for this area. Established in 1613, the county was made up of a combination of the former County of Coleraine with parts of counties Antrim, Donegal and Tyrone. Located in the northwest of Ulster, Co. Londonderry is known for its stunning landscape and historical buildings. Home to the seaside resorts of Portstewart, Magherafelt and Castlerock, the county offers the best of both worlds – beautiful green scenery with the hustle and bustle of big city life. The county is home to Derry City, known as the Second City. With a population approaching 85,000 people, Derry is a vibrant urban centre. THE largest of the six counties of Northern Ireland, County Tyrone historically stretched as far north as the River Foyle. Like the other counties in Ulster, Tyrone has a long and distinguished history. Tullyhogue Fort, near Cookstown was once home to the ancient crowning site of the Chieftain of Ulster. A fort has probably been on the site since the Iron Age and from its high position it is possible to see the six counties that make up Northern Ireland. Tyrone's most famous industry, Tyrone Irish Crystal, was founded in Dungannon in 1771. The current company, Tyrone Crystal, was founded in 1968 when Father Austin Eustace set up a factory to provide employment for the young people of the area. Today Tyrone Crystal is known throughout the world for its innovative design. The largest and least explored mountain range in Northern Ireland, the Sperrins offer dramatic landscapes, windswept hills and river valleys. The region is full of places to camp and explore. The Sperrins in spring are particularly striking. There is a host of outdoor pursuits on offer in the area. From hill walking and cycling to the more daring hang-gliding and gold panning. Enjoy seven miles of golden beach stretching from Magilligan Point, attracting anglers fishing for bass, and early morning equestrians galloping across the surf. TOP THREE ATTRACTIONS
