P U B L I SH E R’ S L E TTE R

Crown Yourself. Don’t wait on others to award you for your achievements. The gift is in your greatness. – Kris D. Williams Life is made up of numerous awards and forms of recognition. From school diplomas to professional certificates, we are trained to be recognized for our progress in our educational, professional and personal lives. We, millennials strive to get on somebody’s ‘30 Under 30 List’ by the time we’re 28. I can admit that my inner drive is energized each time Drake‘s “Trophies” comes on. Competition is good. I like competition which is why MADE Magazine spearheaded our first annual Impact List Awards to celebrate millennials of color who are achieving in the Arts, Entertainment, Philanthropy, Education, Religion and Politics. Marcus Noel, a 2016 Impact List Awardee,

said, “The small wins are necessary to remind you of why you are doing what you are doing.” Awards can serve as the flame that reignites someone’s passion or the nudge someone else needed to be reminded to keep going. The one thing that we neglect to mention regarding competition however is that it’s a little unfair. We are competing with a peer group in which no one is alike. It’s like comparing apples to oranges. Once we realize the fact that we are a unique, special being who is here to serve a specific purpose, we begin to understand that we’ve already won. We are already great. Understanding our greatness is the difference between those who are successful and those who never tap into their potential. Know that you are great. Know that you are royalty.

The crown becomes yours when you look up to see it’s already on your head.

With Love, Kris D. Williams

START-UP GRIND MADE BY: STELLA ASHAOLU

Strategist and tech entrepreneur, Stella Ashaolu introduces MADE Magazine to the realities of the startup grind through her experiences as founder and CEO of WeSolv. This article provides entrepreneurs and startups with some key learning and experience from the 2016 Startup Grind Global Conference. I’d like to start by introducing myself to the MADE Magazine community. My name is Stella Ashaolu and I am a California native, consulting strategist by trade, and member of a minority segment of our population often considered foolish, but otherwise known as entrepreneurs. People often talk about their path to success in very vague and ambiguous term such as “I never gave up chasing my dream” or “I focused on the problem and that led to our success.” But how does that really help the rest of us trying to get there? As a founder working to launch my tech startup, WeSolv, I’m taking the MADE Magazine readers along for the ride of navigating the startup grind and the path to entrepreneurial success…as I experience it. What better way to commence this column than with a recount of the learnings and experience of the 2016 Startup Grind Global Conference? For those who don’t know, The Startup Grind the largest independent startup community, actively educating, inspiring and connecting 215,000 founders in over 200 cities worldwide. From February 23-24, I, along with 3,000 other entrepreneurs from around the world, met in Redwood City, California for 2 days of workshops, talks and meeting with Silicon Valley’s top investors, developers, journalists, and entrepreneurs. There were definitely some heavy-hitters in the building.

Photography: Benji Aird (Airdography)

MADE-MAGAZINE.COM 6

Navigating the conference felt a little like trying to decide between acts and which stage to go to at what time during Lollapalooza or Coachella (minus the awesome music and high-waisted shorts, of course). There were 3 stages and anywhere from one to three talks happening at the same time. My first learning and piece of advice: learn the schedule ahead of time and map your experience according to your priorities as an entrepreneur. Focus on relevance to your business model and/ or areas of needed understanding (i.e. building a three-sided marketplace). The conference boasted some industry vets and startup powerhouses. Each fireside chat or keynote left me feeling either extremely motivated, extremely behind, or just simply amazed at the caliber of talent and accomplishment in the room. While I didn’t get to hear every speaker, the following list includes my top 5 practical nuggets from the many talks that I experienced. Guy Kawasaki on Top 10 Mistakes of entrepreneurs: “Mistake # 2: Scaling too fast. Solution: Eat what you kill.” What this means is even though you are dying to go harder faster, try to scale according to your revenue and profit growth as opposed to always seeking growth via capital injections by way of fundraising. Steve Blank on The Next Era of Entrepreneurship: “Entrepreneurship is the world’s worst job and the world’s best calling.” It only makes sense to do it if you were born for this grind and entrepreneurship

POP CULTURE ENTREPRENEURSHIP

runs through your veins. Bastian Lehmann, founder of Postmates, on Building a Three-sided Marketplace: “Understand the inputs of your gross profit margin and then you understand where to focus. Don’t always listen to what everyone tells you about your business.” Ron Conway, founder of SV Angels, on Immigration Reform & Tech: Advocacy and Entrepreneurship: “Be discerning about your investors. Relevant key relationships and domain experience should always be criteria.” Vinood Khosla of Khosla Venture: “Run lots of small experiments and quickly reiterate your plan. This is called a flexi plan.” At the end of the day(s), it was an amazing experience that gave me some really great advice, potential partnerships and new networks. A last personal learning and piece of advice I want to share is always have your elevator pitch ready to deliver. Throughout the event I told anyone who asked or would listen about WeSolv and the value I brings to the market. Such conversations led to a Chicago Angel investor showing interest requesting follow-up on my venture, biz-dev meetings with enterprise companies and some new allies on my journey to success. As we used to say at Marshall, stay hungry, stay foolish! Signing out.

CONSCIOUS CAM BE X RAPSODY MADE BY: BENJI AIRD

Hip-Hop’s favorite female MC, Rapsody and Emmy-winning Producer, Cam Be collaborate on projects that have the streets buzzing and Dr. Dre bragging.

Rule number one: Always stay ready. You never know when you will receive the third party endorsement that will change your life. In an impromptu studio session in California, HipHop mogul, Dr. Dre’s industry experience and up and coming female MC, Rapsody’s preparation collided. An innocent studio session transformed into an intense freestyle battle between Rapsody and Dr. Dre after the two were introduced by a mutal friend along with Hip-hop record executive and producer, 9th Wonder. Responsible for the initial endorsements of Eminem, Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, Kendrick Lamar and the Game as well, Dr. Dre lended his ear due to the weight of 9th Wonder’s word. “People may listen because of me, but after a while, people have to show and prove.” explained the notable record producer, 9th Wonder. The first female MC for Dr. Dre to endorse, Rapsody humbly recognized the opportunity wasn’t merely by chance but through her work ethic. “When you have somebody like that, the King of California... a legend in Music (Dre is incredible) to take the time to give you that co-sign

#1 “The World Is Yours” - Nas: Takes me back to the 90’s when I was a young ambitious goal digger from the inner city of Chicago. The song gave me strength to take over the world then and it still does to this day. Timeless Classic from one of the best to ever do it.

#2 ”UMI Says“ - Mos Def: Makes me feel invincible and vulnerable at the same time. The lyrics encompasses “Carpe Diem” (seize the day), giving back to others, navigating through the ups and downs of life/ business, and being strong all in one.

#3 ”Get Dis Money“ - Slum Village: You can’t deny the lyricism of Slum Village and the classic production of the late great J-Dilla. This is the ultimate revenue generator motivation song.

#4 ”Hello Good Morning“ - Diddy Dirty Money: My go to song to push through a workout, for some turn up energy while driving in the morning or if I just want to listen to a feel good track.

#5 ”Money Ain’t a Thang“ Jermaine Dupri featuring JAY Z: I am a very humble individual, but I am also very confident and enjoy the fruits of my labor from investments, extra income or elsewhere. Hence the reason for this song by two of the best music entrepreneurs to ever do while still being relevant in 2016: Jigga & JD

POP CULTURE ENTERTAINMENT

19

#6 ”Number One Spot“ - Ludacris: If you are not aiming for the number one spot, then why do it all? “Scheme, Scheme, Plot, Plot, I’m Coming for the Number One Spot” = Mastermind motivation to go after my goals!

#7 ”Silver Lining“ - Jasmine Sullivan: “Silver Lining” puts me in the mindset of the mentality “by any means necessary” when its crunch time. I might not know exactly where all of my blessings are coming from but I will definitely work hard to get to where I need to be.

#8 ”Lovely Day“ - Jill Scott: Jilly from Philly has been my music therapist since the age of 16. Jill singing a cover of the classic “Lovely Day” by Bill Withers gives me a positive outlook in all aspects of life and my endeavors. I am a huge fan of POSITIVITY.

#9 ”The Greatest“ - KING: The wonderful group KING makes me feel like I’m Muhammad Ali in the ring against George Foreman in Africa while floating like a butterfly and stinging like a bee. Being the greatest in everything that I attempt is my motto. Rumble in the jungle baby!

#10 ”Optimistic“ - Sounds of Blackness: I remember hearing this song as a child and it made me feel so powerful and optimistic about the future. You can win and reach your dreams by being Optimistic and keeping your head to the sky. I look to the sky and thank the lord for keeping me and providing me with a new day. MADE-MAGAZINE.COM 20

#11 “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” - Daft Punk: The lyrics “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” over a Daft Punk classic beat just has hard work ethic motivation music written all over it.

#12 ”Stronger“ - Kanye West: Yeezy flipped a powerful beat and the word “stronger” from the Daft Punk to create my ultimate Superwoman persistence anthem. “That don’t kill me, can only make me stronger”. Chi-City ambition at its finest.

#13 ”Walk“ - Foo Fighters: It’s about picking yourself back up when you fall. In business ventures, there are peaks and valleys. Learning to master the valleys makes the peaks even sweeter!

#14 ”Goodlife - T.I. featuring Pharrell and Common: I’m often taken aback when I look at my life and all of my experiences. This track by 3 of my favorites T.I., Common, and Pharrell reminds me to always appreciate the little things and that it doesn’t take much to feel on top of the world.

#15 ”Our Father“ Pharrell Williams: I respect Pharrell so much as a business man, philanthropist and positive role model for the youth. It feels great to know that he created a song to thank Jesus for being the greatest and his foundation. “Our Father” and Pharrell exemplifies being an individual, leader, not caring about what others think, appreciating family, being grateful and above all things honoring the most high every day. 21

THE MILLENNIAL MEET-UP WEEKEND Engaging, educating and entertaining a generation.

“The Millennial Meetup Weekend was an opportunity for millennial leaders across the city to come together and acknowledge the role we play in shaping our personal destinies and the communities we reside in,” said Boyede O. Sobitan, technology liaison for the weekend. MADE hosted the weekend on February 26th-27th in Chicago, bringing together millennials and those beyond the age group who were interested in seeing what the next generation is up to. Everything kicked off at The Promontory with the think tank session, “State of the MADE Millennial.”

MADE BY: ASHLEI COOPER MADE-MAGAZINE.COM 22

Will Grandberry, founder of WGIII Ministries, was the next presenter. Grandberry shared that many millennials describe themselves as non-religious. He added that he believed all people have a capacity for faith. Grandberry used quotes from mentors, tie-ins between faith and imagination, and the work of Ivan Pavlov to support his claim. “We’re dealing with a generation that before they can be informed they need to be inspired,” Grandberry noted. “Millennials can be provoked to discover, define and demonstrate faith. It’s an energy that provides us with a way to not only change our community but also change the world.” The next presentation was given by Priya Shah, founder of The Simple Good. Shah explained that at a young age she realized she would be treated differently because she was an amputee. It was not until she was older that she realized how human misperceptions create obstacles in one’s life. Shah traveled the world learning that just as easily as obstacles can be created for bad, victory over such obstacles can be achieved for good. Shah left Corporate America a year ago to pursue her nonprofit fulltime. Her goal is to use good to create global interconnectedness. The next presenter was Hustle Simmons, of TP Productions and Eighty 81. Simmons opened with lyrics from Jay Z’s song, “A Dream,” focusing on designing one’s self. On his journey to self-design, Simmons found himself in fashion school, where he noticed a lack of nightlife. He began using his friends to develop parties and events. What began as a fun way to earn tuition money became a career.

Photography: Chelsey Little (215 Images) and Rashad Daltyn (Daltyn Photography)

Five speakers made presentations similar to the format of a TED Talk, as Issac Paul, of The Tequila Tales, moderated the discussions. The first presenter was Stephanie Coleman, candidate for Chicago 16th Ward Committeeman. Coleman began by discussing her lineage in the neighborhood of Englewood through her mother and father, then went on to champion the city’s educational institutions as a graduate of a local grammar school, high school and college. She charged millennials to use their networks and affect change in the upcoming elections.

POP CULTURE LIFESTYLE

Marcus Noel, founder of Heart of Man, closed the presentations. He reflected on cousins and friends who were incarcerated, on drugs, or dead, explaining that those were the people who made him want to be impactful. Education was integral to Noel’s successes, so it is a key component of his work. He noted that a fellowship in Washington, D.C. and introduction to three students made his company what it is today, a transformational program that fosters student entrepreneurship. “Most students are interested in music, sports, fashion, technology,” Noel said. “Why aren’t schools allowing students to actually use what they’re interested into get the educational outcomes that they want to see? [Heart of Man] puts students at the center of their own educational experience.” Following the think tank, MADE Columnist JamelF opened the floor at the “Made in America Q&A.” Topics included millennial political affiliations, actionable social media and influential leadership.

23

“It was a positive environment to celebrate our peers’ achievements and get encouragement that can have a lifetime impact,” said Yetunde Okunade, who attended all of the weekend’s events. Day two opened with the “MADE Impact List Awards.” Power 92’s AJ Linton honored six awardees — Stephanie Coleman, Will Grandberry, Priya Shah, Hustle Simmons, Marcus Noel and Katrina Jackson — over brunch at The Godfrey Hotel. “No matter what people said, I knew it was in my heart and, if I stayed true to it, it would take me far,” said Jackson, painter and tattoo artist with Black Ink Crew Chicago. “I turned my hustle into a career.” The weekend closed with a day party on the Godfrey’s rooftop. The 60-degree weather paired with DJs Mile High and Charles Protégé’s playlists made for the perfect setting. “The entire weekend was truly engaging. We effectively accomplished the goals of educating, enlightening and entertaining millennials,” reflected Kris D. Williams, publisher of MADE. “By identifying specific issues and addressing them in various formats and settings, we were able to spark conversations that we plan to continue.”

50 SHADES OF LATINA An intimate conversation focused on the diversity of Afro-Latina women and their role amongst the Latino community of our society.

The 50 Shades of Latina Brunch event held at FAME Studios brought together many different women with diverse stories, perceptions and experiences. Sharing one thing in common - the identity of being Latina or have somehow embraced the Latina culture - these women discussed, examined and recognized the multiplicity within the Latina culture by embracing the prominence behind race, identity and the cultural aspects for Afro-Latinas. The vibrancy and liveliness that took place in the room was extremely touching and stimulating.

The Afro-Latina women of 50 Shades of Latina all had the opportunity to share our personal journey on where they stand in today’s culture. Collectively, everyone’s voice was heard and their understandings was cherished. TSA PRE-CHECK So my fellow TSA Pre-Check folks are going to hate me for putting y’all on, but I would be remiss not to share this total lifesaver. Apply for TSA Pre-Check and cut the $85 check for the cost. It’s worth every penny. The ability to get through the significantly shorter and faster TSA security lines in the airport is the difference between flying sky high on the way to your destination and spending countless hours on standby because you missed your flight.

Not that we befriend people because we have ulterior motives, but having a friend that works in the industry is helpful. Ask them if their company has a friends and family rate, which should allow you to score rooms or tickets at deep discounts. If you strike out, cozy up to a friend who’s a consultant. They travel a lot so they usually have the scoop on some codes too.

A 5 STAR HOTEL (ONE NIGHT OR TWO) …Obviously I’m not suggesting you only book five star hotels, but IF you have the opportunity, treat yo’ self. There’s nothing that compares to top-notch facilities and impeccable customer service. One word of caution- they usually aren’t one size fits all, meaning choose a brand and accommodation that fits your personality. Otherwise you may feel it’s too stuffy. See my must have #2 for help in doing this economically. My favorite pick is The Miami Beach EDITION.

Seems unnecessary… I know. But with hotels in hot competition for customers, they are giving away very helpful perks with just basic membership. For example, in-room wireless service (savings of $15 per day) can really add up. Try to use the same brands and always put your loyalty numbers on your reservations.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH

CHICAGO LUVABULL,

Ariana Rosado

Photography: Benji Aird (Airdography) and Chelsey Little (215 Images)

MY DREAM IS A PRIORITY. MADE BY: BENJI AIRD MADE Magazine had the opportunity to shoot with Luvabull’s dancer, Ariana Rosado, and discuss why her dreams to excel in the professional dance world are a priority for her. MADE: You have clearly made your dream of becoming a professional dancer a priority in your life. How important was it for you to put your passion first and

POP CULTURE AMBITION

what advice can you give other young people in the Arts who may be afraid to take the risk? ARIANA: It was extremely important for me to follow my dreams of being a professional dancer. Dance brings me a joy that I can’t find anywhere else in my life and I knew that I had to follow that desire to share what I love with the world. For those who might be afraid to take the risk of following their dreams, I know following a dream in the arts industry can be scary and it certainly isn’t always easy, but as long as you’re willing to fight for what you want and have the determination and perseverance to push through, everything will be alright, just continue to work hard.

MADE: You’ve spoken of your love for dance despite formal dance training in some areas. Do you think there is more freedom to excel when there are no set boundaries or formal restrictions? ARIANA: I wouldn’t say my lack of formal training gives me more freedom to excel, if anything it makes me work harder because I feel like I’m playing catch up. However, my lack of training does encourage me to put more emphasis on my performance quality. I give my all when I dance because it’s all I have. I may not have the perfect technique, but I want people to feel something when I dance. MADE: Throughout your dance career, have you faced any obstacles becoming a professional dancer? If so, what has been your biggest lesson? 33

MADE-MAGAZINE.COM 34

ARIANA: Hip hop is what I’m most known for. Hip hop just feels right to me, it feels natural on my body, and is something I enjoy so I frequently take classes and was in a hip hop/ salsa dance company called Gifted Souls for a few years. MADE: What is your most proud moment of your dance career so far?

ARIANA: Other than my lack of training and pushing through that, I would have to say my biggest obstacle has probably been me doubting myself. In life you may have people who don’t support your decision to follow your passion. After receiving my degree I had a few people pushing me into getting a career in corporate America, which I knew wouldn’t make me happy, and occasionally I would doubt myself on if I was making the right choice by following my passion for dance. As soon as that thought would cross my mind I’d always receive a blessing that reminds me that I’m making the right decision. MADE: How does your diversity and culture add value to your dance team? ARIANA: My diversity and culture of having a background in Latin dance adds a spicy flare to my dancing. Some of my teammates even joke around calling me “The Spicy One”. MADE: What keeps you grounded in the glamorous world of Sports and Entertainment? ARIANA: My family keeps me very grounded. We are all very close and they are super supportive. They remind me where I come from and to always stay true to who I am. Without them I wouldn’t have the courage or strength to pursue my dreams. I love them so much. MADE: What impact do you want to make when you dance in front of large audiences? ARIANA: I always want the audience to feel my passion when I dance. I want to inspire when I perform and bring joy to the audience. MADE: What style of dance are you most recognized for? How did you establish a niche in that area?

ARIANA: I have two proud moments actually. One being my very first professional dance gig dancing with Beyoncé on Oprah’s last TV show. The moment I hit the stage and felt the energy from the audience I knew that I had to follow my passion for dance. As clicheé as it may sound, it was one of those “aha” moments that made me find my calling and passion. My second proud moment is when I auditioned in front of Debbie Allen (whom I’ve looked up to since I was young) and was chosen to dance on the season finale of the hit show Empire. Just being in her presence during rehearsals and the filming was inspirational. MADE: Do you ever get nervous before performances? If so, how do you manage? ARIANA: Yes, I still get nervous before performances. Which I think is natural and good because it reminds me that I care about my performance. I usually say a prayer before I go on which helps calm me. MADE: What can we expect from Ariana Rosado in the near future? How do you actively seek to continue to make your dream a priority in your life? ARIANA: In the future I would like to relocate to the LA area to further pursue my love for dance. It’s a goal of mine to one day be on a major tour for a recording artist, so hopefully one day you will see me dancing behind a great performer!

LOVE, SEX & FRIENDSHIP:

IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER The stories your big sister never told you. MADE BY: CHELSEY LITTLE

As a 20-something woman in today’s culture, the realities of life, love and relationships continue to build stories as the years go on. With all of our experiences being unique in their own way, we, as millennial females, value the authentic stories of more seasoned women who have “been there and done that”. With this in mind, hearing the perspectives from sucessful women who are not only near our age, but are relatable can provide us with gems of insight necessary for our growth and development. While the journeys in our lives continue to develop with unique perspectives, there is a point in which we must identify, acknowledge and hold on to the importance of the relationships we’ve built with those who are close to our hearts. Farissa Knox, author of Love, Sex, & Friendship: In No Particular Order, writes about the journey of her mid-to-late twenties, and her transition to her thirties as a wonderful mom, savvy entrepreneur and CEO of RLM Media and fashion social networking blog, WHATRUWearing. In this novel, Knox provides a real perspective on what she learned from her closest relationships. As we dive into true adulthood (as a mother, wife, etc.), much can be learned from Knox’s experiences. Moving from New York to Chicago during this period in time, Knox speaks on how the value of friendship and love served as an influence upon her life as a young adult. In an exclusive interview with MADE, she encourages women of the millennial generation to continue to keep moving forward towards future goals while also allowing relationships to follow accordingly without any rush or pressure to start at a specific time. “There are no rules or regulations, you [have to] make it for yourself”, Knox says. Read more on Knox’s journey as a businesswoman, mother and friend in her latest novel, Love, Sex, & Friendship: In No Particular Order which is available exclusively on Amazon. In addition to her recent novel, WHATRUWearing will be releasing its newly podcast this upcoming April on their website. And lastly, be sure to also stay tuned with the latest on both her fashion blog and company on social media @farissaknox & @whatruwearing on Instagram and Twitter.

HERE’S HOW MILLENNIALS WOULD VOTE IF THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION WERE TODAY Republican leaders are hoping to appeal to millennial voters in the 2016 presidential election, but they face an uphill battle with the liberal leaning generation. This challenge can be seen in a recent Quinnipiac University Poll in which millennials ages 18-34 were asked whom they would vote for if the general election were today. Each respondent disclosed their preference in all potential general election scenarios, e.g. Clinton vs Trump, Clinton vs Rubio, Sanders vs Trump, and so on. Here’s how the candidates stack up among millennial voters.

Methodology: Responses are reported for 1,453 registered voters with a margin of sampling error of +/- 2.6 percentage points. The survey includes 672 Republican or Republican leaning voters with a margin of sampling error of +/- 3.8 percentage points and 573 Democratic or Democratic leaning voters with a margin of sampling error of +/- 4.1 percentage points.
