P U B L I SH E R’ S L E TTE R Many young people in their twenties have grown to become a particular type of flower, soiled in a fruitful or barren ground. Some, strongly planted in the root, may be found in a field alone, capturing enough nourishment to solely feed themselves. Others, loosely planted in unnourished soil, exist in a field full of weeds, gasping for air, water and the proper attention. Few, firmly planted in fertile soil, enjoy the fruits of Spring in a beautiful garden of all types of plants, benefitting from the consistent water, sun and care that the entire garden brings. Which flower are you?

Only when we decide to plant ourselves in good soil will we know what we can produce. - KRIS D. WILLIAMS

Then we can understand how we fit in the larger picture: the perfect Spring Day. Find your source. Plant yourself. Surround yourselves with flourishing leaders who goal-set and dream-chase. Now produce. One year ago, a group of bright-eyed, bushy-tailed entrepreneurial spirits decided to use our talents to influence our generation. As a result, MADE Magazine was born. What was first an artistic outlet for a few, has evolved into a community of entrepreneurial and influential creatives who exchange valuable experiences, advice and opinions to better one another online and in person. We have learned that in a time where even the most influential people need direction, it is clear that we all need consistent motivation, mentorship and resources to achieve our goals. MADE’s online blog and the e-zine you are reading today serve as a source of information to guide our professional careers, entrepreneurial endeavors and personal lives. The integration of events like the Go, Get It! Convo, Millennial Meet-up, the Pay It 4ward Program and Tech Crush has forged long-lasting relationships that contribute to our individual and overall success. As I reflect on our one year anniversary, this testimony proves that when one plants themselves in solid ground, with the help of other grounded individuals, fruits may bear to benefit an entire garden. The fruit will always taste much sweeter when it’s grown by people who all passionately care about the finished product. Thank you for being a part of that group and sticking around for over one year as we work to squeeze every drop of motivation possible into each issue.

Cheers,

THE NEW HAPPILY EVER AFTER:

ENTREPRENEURSHIP & BEYOND (in no particular order) MADE BY SIMEDAR JACKSON

It’s hard to find your way post-graduation when you haven’t quite found your passion. This is a constant stuggle for millennials, but we imagine the perfect life would go a little something like this:

GRADUATE FROM COLLEGE. Getting a degree is a MAJOR key to success, but contrary to popular belief it’s not the end of the tunnel. Securing your diploma gets you to the edge and now it’s time to take the leap.

6

GET A JOB. Easier said than done. Job searching is difficult so don’t get down on yourself if your predetermined plan begins to fray at the edges. Focus on getting a position that serves as a career stepping stone or gives you a new set of skills rather than landing the “perfect” job.

GET EXPERIENCE.

QUIT YOUR DAY JOB.

It’s time to pay your dues and build up your armament. Use your job to gain expertise in everything from customer service to research. You never know what could be a transferable skill!

You’ve been ruminating over what you want your life to look like for some time. Now that you’ve done some groundwork you can wave goodbye to a 9-5 and shift your attention to what really matters. Take advantage of the opportunity to follow your passions, even if that means instability.

TRAVEL THE WORLD. You don’t have to be loaded to travel the world. Plan your trips in advance, utilize discounts and travel light for the chance to experience new places and people on a budget. Recent graduate? Consider a gap year or opportunities abroad. There’s no better time than the present.

FIND WAYS TO GIVE BACK.

FIND YOUR AH HA MOMENT.

Whether you realize it or not; you’re a trailblazer. Look for opportunities to give back to your community and cultivate the minds of those coming after you. There’s no greater feeling than playing a crucial role in someone else’s success!

Even after years of school and working, you still may not know exactly where you see yourself going. Immerse yourself in self-development and reflection to bring you closer to that life-altering epiphany.

Over the years, Vanessa Simmons has worn countless hats and gathered many accomplishments under her belt. But no matter how diverse her portfolio gets, the hats and the belt (and the portfolio) always remain fashionable. It’s been pretty effortless for the TV personality turned mogul to float between businesses and evolve in the process. She jumped from a sneaker line (Pastry) with her sister Angela Simmons to spearheading a recent lingerie line with the company Naked Princess, appropriately named The Vanessa Simmons Collection. Boasting high end intimate apparel, the collection showed a sensual side of her brand that still remained versatile. Similar to her personality, the lingerie pieces could be worn casually around the house or styled to wear out in the city. And since she became a first-time mom in 2014 to daughter Ava Marie Jean, her days out in the city have definitely increased. Maybe that’s how she got in such great shape for the postbaby lingerie photos shortly after the birth. Ever since her first taste of the fashion life, Vanessa Simmons continues to quench the thirst of the loyal fans who are on edge to see what flavor of fashion she rolls out next. 10

Navigating The Startup Crafting the Perfect Pitch MADE BY STELLA ASHAOLU Founder and CEO of WeSolv, Stella Ashaolu, covers the importance of crafting a salient pitch and recaps what makes a great pitch through the lens of the WeSolv Pitch competition at the 1st Annual Tech Crush event. WeSolv recently hosted a pitch completion as a part of the 1st Annual Tech Crush event presented by FAME Events and MADE Magazine. Why did WeSolv decide to host a pitch competition, you ask? WeSolv is all about facilitating diversity and collaboration to yield innovation and that’s

12

exactly what was displayed at the April event. Ten company and/or concept founders came together to speak about how their businesses were going to change the world to an audience interested in learning about tech diversity in Chicago.

Why Are Pitches Important? If you are beginning to navigate the “startup grind” or are thinking about it, the elevator pitch is your single most important tool. It is how you communicate the value you are creating and influence people to move according to your desires. As you work to craft a strong elevator pitch you become forced to strongly evaluate your business and the most Important messages that resonate with your audience. You may find that you have various pitch versions depending on who you are speaking to or what your objectives are, but each should become so second nature that you can almost recite them in your sleep. The ability to communicate value to a potential user, buyer, investor, or supporter is often times the difference between good companies that make it and great ones that don’t.

What Makes a Great Pitch? Every great elevator pitch should have three very important components: the benefit, the differentiator and the ask. Depending on the environment or audience your can break it down a littler further and incorporate some of the elements we used in judging the WeSolv pitch competition:

The Benefit Problem/Opportunity It is important to be able to clearly define the problem or opportunity that your venture addresses in a manner that resonates with your audience. WeSolv Pitch Competition winner, Tiffany Smith of Orange Print, did an excellent job of passionately explaining the critical problem of returning citizens, also known as ex-offenders, needing the opportunity to support themselves and addressing the labor shortage in the construction industry.

The Solution The Tech Crush audience was very moved by the value provided by Kaizen Health to patients with limited transportation. The solution is not just the product or service you are selling, but rather is value or the impact that your product or service has on customers.

The Differentiator Secret Sauce Communicating your unique ability to address the problem or opportunity is especially important when speaking with potential investors. Whether it is a patent, special industry knowledge or something else, help your audience understand what is special about your company. Business Model How are you going to make money and ultimately make your investors money? A great product or service without a sustainable customer is not a business. Make sure you have figured out what people will be willing to pay for and how much. Why you? Similar to the secret sauce, it is important to share why you and your team are going to be successful. What about you, your team members, or your advisors position you to make it. No one could question Miesha Jihan Williamson’s extensive engineering background as it related to the STEM Girl Social Network.

The Ask Pitch Style At the end of the day, you are needed to be able to comfortably communicate the important aspects of business and what it is you need. The better you are able to express the foregoing the more likely you will be able to influence your audience to act according to your ask.

MADE-TO-MEASURE MADE BY CHRISTINA MARSHALL-VALDEZ

I was MADE for this! I recited those words to myself as I walked on stage and prepared to pitch. The judges were made up of successful entrepreneurs and power players from Apple, Beats by Dre, IBM and the FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising ). But, I wasn’t intimidated. I felt ready. This was my chance to share Elu, my online made-to-measure apparel brand that was born out of my personal frustration as a plus-size woman with limited fashion options. I was forewarned that the panel was not looking for a winning idea. Instead, they were looking to invest in the promising entrepreneur behind the idea. That was the prompt I needed to let my personal brand shine and give those judges numerous reasons to believe in the Christina Marshall-Valdez personal brand.

We are BRANDS

As an entrepreneur, the importance of personal brand is more pronounced. Your brand is the invitation that allows others to determine if they want to work with you, hire you, be friends with you, and do business with you. My perspective on personal brand development started prior to this #TrepLife when I was still a corporate marketer crafting strategies and campaigns for global iconic companies such as Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Nikon, Diageo and Kraft Foods. My first big lesson as a marketer was that your brand is whatever your consumer perceives it to mean. My job as a marketer was to influence her perception and convince her to think of my product in a way that makes her love it, trust it and ultimately buy more of it. Today, I invite anyone who is about their business to put on their marketer hat because YOU are no different than any other brand lining the retail shelves. Your personal brand is what people perceive when they hear your name. Your name should signal positive, meaningful associations that make others want to know you, listen to you, believe in you or even give to you.

Brands are MADE to MEASURE All brands have unique histories. Of course, people are no different. However, how we use our past to fit the right size our brand development is an active decision. When I was an infant, my mom suffered a massive stroke that left her brain damaged and unable to care for me. My grandmother passed when I was 14 years old, leaving me without a parent or guardian to help me navigate my young life. Your past has the power to shape your brand and make you ready for future opportunity. My past deposited values and qualities that made me resilient, determined and relentless in all that I do – the perfect brand recipe for this life as an apparel entrepreneur. Like the clothing I make for my clients today, I consider personal brands as truly made-to-measure. They are created with the unique dimensions of your past and intentional efforts in mind. 18

Brands need C.A.R.E. Speaking of development, you must intentionally invest in developing your brand ongoing. Creating a positive personal brand requires some tender, loving care. To ensure people are thinking of you the way you desire, create a plan using this simple C.A.R.E. framework. 1) Character – a strong brand starts with good basic character (e.g. honest, fair and knowledgeable) 2) Action – demonstrate these character traits in all you do, create, and say 3) Reputation – be consistent in your works to create a positive reputation over time 4) Evaluation – check with others to gauge how you’re being perceived and optimize accordingly

MADE-MAGAZINE.COM POP CULTUREDEVELOPMENT PERSONAL

While you are not a product on the shelf, you do want people to buy your talents, invest in your ideas, join your tribe and offer you an opportunity. When your brand has been developed to attract these things you can truly stand before an opportunity and say “I was MADE for this!” Whenever I pitch Elu and tell people about this disruptive new online platform that makes made-to-measure apparel for plus-size women, I am always chanting these words because I know that my past and intentional development efforts have readied me and honed my personal brand specifically for this journey. 19

FEATURE STORY

GAME CHANGER:

Marvin Bing

After a hard-knock childhood, political activist and experience curator Marvin Bing decided to channel his creativity through social change. Today, Bing is a leader of global social movements for Arts for Amnesty including letter-writing campaigns, advocacy projects and politically-charged art shows. “We use the work of the organization as a catalyst to engage the new generation of activists to indulge in the work of human rights around the world,” explained Bing. As the National Director for Art for Amnesty, Bing works hand-in-hand with artists, musicians, photographers, filmmakers and cultural institutions who support their work around human rights. Bing has led hundreds of initiatives to amplify the voices of unsung heroes. Most notably, Eight-time Grammy award-winning artist Usher recognized Bing for his creative expertise and contacted him to create an art experience around the release of his interactive video (directed by Daniel Arsham) for the politically charged record “Chains” featuring Nas and Bibi Bourelly. The video vividly profiled young police brutality victims such as Trayvon Martin, Sean Bell and Eric Garner to express dissatisfaction with killings of men of color and to increase awareness about injustice in America.

To meet Usher’s need for an innovative way to represent the interactive video, Bing curated Art for Social Justice in 11 days at Donna Karen’s famed “Urban Zen” in New York, which was well attended by luminaries such as LA Reid, Michael Strahan, Rosie Perez, Chaka Pilgrim, Abigail Disney and more. The event drew thousands over two days. Similar to himself, Bing urges the next generation of artists to use their unique power to fuel new campaigns that bring people together to promote change. He encourages millennial artists to work on a passion project to express their opinions and amplify it by attaching it to a larger organization. The game has been changed by the platforms Bing has curated to amplify the voices of unsung heroes. The legacy of Arts for Amnesty continues with every activation that Bing produces. And he’s only getting started.

CREATIVE CATALYSTS: MILLENNIAL ARTISTS WHO ARE DISRUPTING ART & CULTURE MADE BY CHELSEY LITTLE Today’s art sphere is a melting pot of storytellers from across the world. More specifically, American artists are a collective of visual creatives who establish their own narratives that are not only crafted to challenge the visual perception of their audience, but to advance the nature of art itself. Millennial artists are continuing this trend by taking individualism into a deeper context and emphasizing their own identity in art.

MARKUS PRIME | Illustrator After looking at the work of Markus Prime, his art will inspire us all to hold up our Black Power fists. In response to the events of social injustice across America inflicted upon black women, Prime was inspired to emphasize a positive spotlight upon black women in his art. Merging the imagery of Afro-Futurism and cartoon superheroes, he places black women on a higher platform by highlighting the size of his characters to emphasize power amongst the illustrated subjects. B.R.U.H., Prime’s most recent publication that was released in April 2016, features his rendition of a variety of comic and anime characters portrayed as black women to collectively illustrate an uplifting message of activism through art. Recent magazine and blog features include VIBE Magazine, Huffington Post, AfroPunk and more. Instagram: @markusprimelives Twitter: @markuspr1m3_ Website: mlnnprime.com

HAZE HAZE | Creative Directors x Photographers x Stylists This East coast sibling duo is all about promoting and sending the message of black unity and power through love, original visual art, photography and fashion. These two keep their art identity alive and trending with creative visuals. Fists Up, Afros Out - their most recent project campaign - is currently reaching attention across their following population of over 25k+ followers on social media. ALI 6 | Street Artist The work of artist Ali 6 (Nikko Locander) has definitely sparked the attention and interest of millennial urban/ street art followers. Starting as a graffiti artist in Chicago, Ali 6 has established a fictional character known as “Richie” (source: Fake Shore Drive) that now trends along the walls of countless buildings and alleys across the Chicagoland area. With this character as his identity in the street art sphere, Ali 6 continues to re-create “Richie” in his artistry in connection to trending cultures amongst the Chicago community (i.e. music, sports, fashion, etc.). One of his most recent collaborations was done with one of Chicago’s streetwear fashion brand Jugrnaut. Click HERE to view images of this collab editorial collection. WATCH DOROTHY ON THIS SEASON OF E! #RICHKIDS OF BEVERLY HILLS

She is opinionated, powerful and influential - the perfect formula for a female boss. With a following that boasts nearly 1 million fashion, beauty and lifestyle lovers on Instagram alone, Dorothy Wang has used her voice online and on television to turn “likes” into quantitative and qualitative data used to create multiple business lines, including a champagne label and a hashtag jewelry collection.

In an intimate interview overlooking West Hollywood with MADE Magazine, Dorothy channels a Barbie boss with a hint of Beyonce’, but there is way more here than just beauty. Dorothy is unique when compared to most instafamous millennials since authenticity and ambition seem to rule her world. Traveling the road less followed by some rich kids, Dorothy uses her role on the popular E! television series Rich Kids of Beverly Hills to emphasize the desire to create her own accolades outside of those reached by her billionaire dad. “I just knew that I was going to create a business myself,” Dorothy explained. “I was going to strike out on my own and create my own path.” She’s made a great start by launching products showcasing her personal taste and staying engaged with fans about designing their own lane. “I would get a lot of tweets and Instagram comments from my fans saying things like, ‘I love your taste and style, but I don’t have the same budget (as you do),’” she said about social media chatter after the episodes aired. With these thoughts in mind, Dorothy created a jewelry line that was affordable for the average consumer. She also used some of the very same

comments from her fans to create necklaces using hashtags such as #NOFILTER and #WCW. She saw this as an opportunity to meet the demand of her followers. Dorothy always remembers being a young child and the emphasis her parents put on performance, saying “That has been so beneficial for me because I’m always on top of things and know what’s going on.” One thing that she stays on top of is staying authentic to her true self.

No one cares about your business more than you do.”

Quality, authentic consumer engagement is another thing that tops the priority list. Although it would be easy to chase a check when brands are sliding through her DMs, Dorothy prefers quality posts over quantity when sharing products with her fans. She will only display products on her social media pages that she genuinely uses.

Retails $28-$34. Necklace comes in rose gold, gold and silver. www.dorothywang.com

“I just knew that I was going to create a business myself and I was going to strike out on my own and create my own path.”

- DOROTHY WANG With a strong passion for travel, fashion and lifestyle to spark ideas, Dorothy fused the inspiration from her personal hobbies to launch a champagne label. “Every year for my birthday, I would get a champagne bottle rhinestoned and I would keep it on my bar mantle...so I wanted to provide something pretty that other people could collect as well,” she remembers about creating the Rich and Bubbly champagne line.

28

This Rich and Bubbly television star (pun intended) continues to use her hobbies to create in demand products and leverages social media to market them. Dorothy Wang is taking her Rich Kids of Beverly Hills notoriety beyond the box of Los Angeles and the television screen to build a global brand for her name as a young mogul in the making…who also happens to be a very solid choice for #WCW.

A TASTE OF SUCCESS Ayesha Curry Stirs Up Her Own Lane in the Culinary Industry MADE BY SIMEDAR JACKSON Contrary to popular belief, basketball wives are more than what meets the eye – or the television screen. Ayesha Curry garnered her own fan base courtside with her warm personality, rambunctious daughter and relatable social media presence surrounding the hype of her Golden State Warriors husband, Steph Curry. The Canadian born mother of two first stole America’s heart after releasing a comical rap video playing off of Drake’s “Steph Curry with the shot” lyric from the song “0 to 100”. Her clever rhymes helped established her as a down to Earth woman who enjoys cooking as much as she enjoys goofing off with her family. Though Ayesha has made it clear that she’s devoted to being a stay-at-home mother, she recently turned her attention towards entrepreneurism announcing that she will

appear on Food Network with her own cooking show and unveiling the cover of her highly anticipated cookbook “The Seasoned Life”. The book will be filled with wholesome recipes mirroring Mrs. Curry’s faith and familyoriented image. Foodies and basketball heads are already twiddling their thumbs waiting for the book’s launch, but Ayesha continues to increase fervor with peeks into her seasoned life. She’s peppered her Instagram with glimpses of recipes presenting everything from jerk shrimp with lobster chow mein to pastel pink elderflower cocktails. Stephen Curry may inspire during game time, but Ayesha’s grandiose step from her husband’s shadow is a nod to enthusiasts and dreamers everywhere that there is always a way that they can taste their dreams.

TYLER LEPLEY FEATURE STORY For the sole purpose of vibing about chasing dreams, actor Tyler Lepley, star of Tyler Perry’s television drama The Haves and the Have Nots on the OWN Network, sat down with MADE Magazine to participate in this favorite pastime. On a beautiful Spring day, Tyler Lepley shared how he steps into new opportunities in which he calls ‘fulfilling his personal legend,’ but not before he reflected on his decadelong journey often mistaken as an overnight success. Must have been one hell of a night.

According to Lepley’s research, it takes 10 years to make an overnight success. “Really when you do your research, there’s 10 years behind [someone’s success] where there was nothing but hard work and no success and no one realizing it.” He spoke first-hand about the preparation involved in mastering his craft.

“It’s okay to love yourself. Find out what you’re here for. - TYLER LEPLEY

Born and raised in Philadelphia, after college Lepley took the leap of faith to pursue a career in entertainment when he moved to Los Angeles. Unsure of the exact opportunity that would take him to the next level, one thing he knew for sure was his passion for the arts. With the right tools, advice and team, his journey had begun.

“Don’t overlook the preparation aspect of it because in order for something to meet you, you gotta take the first step,” he explained. The art of practicing your craft with repetition seemed to be a #majorkey for Lepley. “Whatever it is that you’re doing, you have to do it over and over and over again….it takes repetition,” he explains.

Like many millennials who quit their jobs or move suddenly to attain their ambitions, Lepley explained how friends and family questioned his decisions. In response to how to conquer the feeling of being selfish when pursuing your dreams alone, Lepley stated, “It’s okay to love yourself. Find out what you’re here for. I really believe we’re not here to just pay bills and get by.” His role as “Benny” on The Haves and Have Nots, now in Season 4, is proof that dreams do come true.

Practice makes perfect, but balance is important as well as a rising tastemaker. Although Lepley saved his coins to invest in acting classes, admittedly, Lepley explained he still enjoyed himself in the process. He laughs, “I’d go out here and there even when I was figuring it out because I think it’s important to have balance.”

Lepley encouraged rising stars interested in breaking into entertainment to prepare thoroughly while traveling on the road to success.

This sense of self-enlightenment and awareness may be a success factor that contributes to Lepley’s plethora of opportunities including Season 5 of the Have and the Have Nots and a new lead role in TV One movie called “Ringside”. It’s pretty clear that Tyler Lepley is on the Who’s Got Next list.

#MADE

The Playlist of Consciousness and Self-Reflection MADE BY CHELSEY LITTLE The messages in music are often clear early in the first minute or so. But have you ever noticed that there are some songs where you can’t just listen to them only once? It’s because there’s some music that can go deeper than a recognized sample or rhythm. Personally, I believe songs are at their best when the words draw a clear focus to what the artist is personally affected by, specifically calling attention to crucial issues society needs to acknowledge collectively.

SELF-AWARENESS & CHANGE OF ONE’S INNER POWER K.O.S (Determination), Black Star / Mos Def & Talib Kweli (1998) K.O.S, Knowledge of Self, speaks on what we must possess within ourselves. It’s time to identify not only who you are, but bring life to the purpose of your life with determination. Talib Kweli and Mos Def (Black Star) hands down speak deep in this hit. And yes, they are speaking to you. If I Ruled the World, Nas featuring Lauryn Hill (1996) Between the rawness of Nas’ storytelling to the smooth and sweet sounds of Lauryn in this song’s iconic chorus, this song reveals a visual of what the world around us could be without any negative discrepancies - simply living an unbelievable dream that would be true.

Freedom, Beyoncé featuring Kendrick Lamar (2016) It’s time to raise and pump your fists in the air when this beat drops. This song is dedicated to black women, in which Bey sheds light and empowerment on the personal and societal issues black women have faced for a long time (i.e. amongst violence, sexism, etc.). Let’s not forget to add that Kendrick is on the track...need I say more? 38

RACIAL INJUSTICE AND BLACK POWER Blacker the Berry, Kendrick Lamar (2015) If you do not feel any goosebumps on your skin while hearing this song, listen to it again. Kendrick simply speaks on the reality and celebration of Blackness - including both self-hatred and appreciation, the double- consciousness he highlights which has always existed amongst the African-American community. Ready or Not, Fugees (1996) The Fugees aren’t playing. They’re coming for and will find whatever is in their way. By the end of this song Wyclef, Pras and Lauryn tell how the power of selfdetermination will make individuals unstoppable.

Holler If Ya Hear Me, 2Pac (1993) Spoken by “The Rebel”, we all get a sense in this track that 2Pac is for representing his people and fighting for justice and peace amongst the Black community. Whatever it takes, the battle isn’t won until he steps in the ring.

Auditorium, Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) (2009)
Yasiin spreads the message of originality, yet with his own smooth persona. He tells his audience about not only his sense of realness, but emphasizes why speaking his truth represents a natural force that will inspire and liberate the people.

WORLD LOVE AND PEACE A Dream, Common featuring will.i.am (2006) Highlighting the reality of world racism and discrimination, Common’s narrative on these issues place a revolutionary mindset and theme over it all. May I also add that this song has a special sampled appearance by the great Martin Luther King Jr., in which we all hear his legendary “I Have a Dream” speech blend perfectly with the vocals of will.i.am... genius. Where is the Love?, Black Eyed Peas (2004) ) The BEP turn our attention to not only the violence and hatred that is across the world, but the root of what can end it all - love. We are reminded that our actions can cause either peace or harm against each other more rapidly than what we think, effecting everyone around us at the same time. The Power of the Cleanse With summer on our immediate radar, last minute trips to the gym and serious plans for dieting are quickly taking over our checklists. Luckily in a conversation with best-selling author of the Shred series, Dr. Ian Smith assured MADE Magazine, there is still time to shred a few pounds before the getaways, destination weddings and family cookouts.

D

r. Smith suggests working in healthy protein, seasonal fruits, fiber content and chicken (without skin) into our diets to shift eating patterns. He also shares insights found in the Official Shred Power Cleanse that may bring us closer to health goals.

If used correctly, cleanses can increase energy levels, promote weight loss, reduce cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure and sharpen mental focus.

46

So the next question is how long will it take for the pounds be gone? Dr. Ian emphasizes the importance of keeping the weight off through exercise and maintaining a balance in our eating habits as we approach summer activities. Just when we decided to make an excuse due to a “busy schedule”, Dr. Ian provides us with the Official Shred Power Cleanse Recipe Book which includes 100 super recipes that can be made in 30 minutes or less. Dr. Ian also encourages everyone to participate in the smoothie challenge by using the Purple Power Detox Smoothie Recipe. Click here to learn more.

HOW TO USE THE POWER CLEANSE: JUMPSTART Used to

jumpstart weight loss, the Power Cleanse is perfect right before participating in a full weight-loss program.

RESET It also may be used to reset an old regimen.

WEEKEND QUICKIE

Have a big event coming up? Dr. Ian recommends The Power Cleanse before a high-profile weekend like a wedding or beach trip to lose up to 8-10 pounds.

Rule of Thumb:

1. Eat a clean breakfast such as oatmeal, bananas and smoothies. 3. If you know you have an event or outing, eat a healthy, clean lunch. 3. Incorporate snacks into your diet through the day so that you are not thinking about large meals. 4. Add in a “buffer zone” for potential time that you know you will eat less clean. 5. Reduce portions of the bad stuff (fatty foods). Increase portions of the good stuff (veggies and fruits).

“The idea is to gradually work your way back to eating what you want in smaller portions,” Dr. Ian explains. He suggests that once we feel the self-fulfilling rewards, we will not want to go back to unhealthy eating habits. Dr. Ian is now offering popcorn and bars with his recipe book on his website: www.shredlife.com Dr. Smith is the author of 13 books, 5 of them #1 New York Times Bestsellers including SUPER SHRED: The Big Results Diet, SHRED: The Revolutionary Diet, The Fat Smash Diet and Extreme Fat Smash. He is also the author of the critically acclaimed The Blackbird Papers (2005 BCALA fiction Honor Book Award winner.) ONYX ALL BLACK IN BALI

In an attempt to recollect my mind, body and spirit, I started a journey of selfreflection and discovery. I found Bali to be the very experience I needed. It is a magnetic land of art oozed, pristine beaches, impressive volcanoes and breathtaking views. A tropical environment perfect for reflection during my personal “Eat, Pray, Love rendition. Each morning, the traditions of the indig-

enous people reminded me of my own humble beginnings while the tourist attractions and entertainment venues provided access to the metro lifestyle I was used to. The beauty of it all was revealed in the comfort I felt in my own black skin. For once, I was not ashamed of my melanin and actually admired the way it glistened in the sun. All I could think was that I was beautiful. I was black. I was in Bali.

DO MILLENNIALS CARE ABOUT

THE LUXE LIFE? MADE BY SIMEDAR JACKSON

Gone are the 90’s when wearing brand labels plastered over everything was like a shiny badge of success. There used to be a time when scoring a pair of Prada shades or casually driving around in a luxury car was at the top of every young professional’s list of life goals. But as a new crop quickly overtakes the workforce, it begs the question: Do millennials really care about the luxe life?

52

Generation Y is well known for going against tradition with people under 35 following unconventional career paths more than ever before. Job security and high salaries are no longer determining factors in the lives of millennials, often coming second to self-fulfillment and happiness. Millennials are more interested in the quality of their lives rather than the quantity of dollars they can earn by putting their dreams and ambitions on the

back burner. Yet even as more young people search for alternative ways to cultivate their careers, luxury items remain a hot commodity with millennials at the heart of every company’s marketing strategy. Is a luxury lifestyle still the light at the end of the tunnel or has this generation done away with splendor altogether?

Have you ever encountered someone whose wisdom belied their age? 22-year-old Shannon Ousley’s writing directly reflects her deep understanding of the world, her immense emotional intelligence and ability to make sense of life’s most confusing moments.

DEAR NIKKI, “Mommy died today. I guess it was a long time coming.” MADE BY JASMINE BROWLEY In the 2010 book, ‘Dear Nikki,’ Ousley wrote a letter to her beloved big sister Nikki, whose sudden death is followed by the slow and heart wrenching demise of their troubled mother. Throughout the autobiographical book, Ousley rehashes her tumultuous adolescent years of practically raising her three younger siblings while still growing up herself among Cleveland,Ohio’s black upper crust during high school.

“Among other things, you’ll find that you’re not the first person who was ever confused and frightened by human behavior. You’re by no means alone on the score, you’ll be excited and stimulated to know.” - JD Salinger

56

Although the memoir is penned directly to Nikki, Shannon speaks to us as well with her well crafted, vivid coming of age picture that draws readers in from start to finish, leavito death, misery, controlled substances, poverty, and precarious social and ethnic ng us asking ourselves important questions about family, love and heartache. The beautiful unraveling of Ousley’s life is depicted through her nomadic journey into adulthood, as evidenced by her attendance to three different colleges in four years as well as her exhaustive search for contentment and stability. Through her early exposure settings, she learns how to see decipher the “message from the mess” and emerges from her difficult and traumatic past to a self assured carefree black girl.

WHAT’S IN A WARDROBE? Your Male & Female Spring Style Guide for a Versatile Wardrobe Powered by IATEKATEMOSS

MADE BY XUXA DAY

If you’re truly into expressing yourself through your wardrobe, there comes a time where boardrooms and fashion will collide. Whether you have a meeting, conference call, or are just running to pick up coffee - presentation is everything. Of course a tailored suit is always a no fail scenario. However, style lets your mind wander far off into attire that could be worn front row to New York Fashion Week. A new season is amongst us which means it’s time to do some Spring cleaning or sprucing up to your closet. Make sure you’re not skimping out on your Sunscreen nor these fashion staples that you’ll need at the office and happy hour at your local watering hole. We as separate sexes need certain accessories to tie into our daily get-ups when bringing the final touches to our fits. For women, we suggest you spice up your outfit with a mix of gems and pops of color. The go-to bag for this season will be a bucket bag. Inside will be all of your goods and gadgets to keep you stylish all day long. From head to toe, you’ll be able to pair two to three of these accessories together without clashing. Try this tan leather drawstring bag from Nordstrom ($49.90). A scarf can always be worn as a multi-faceted piece as it can be tied in various ways. You could end up with an ascot in the office, a turban that’ll make June Ambrose jealous, or even a retro

seventies era headwrap. The scarf is the easiest to obtain whether you want to go ultra-chic and sport fine silks from Hermès or be thrifty with a paisley print from H&M. There’s a great new brand of stylish wraps by YouTube guru Ambrosia Malbrough which are flying off the racks and won’t pinch all of your pennies ($20). Jewelry is the mint garnish to your mojito this Spring. Stacked rings are always a key item to keep your fingers dancing during office hours on the laptop along with your posh gel mani. You can splurge on jewelry when it’s a statement purchase. Treat yourself to gold delicacies from Margiela ($460), tech-savvy jewel-tone rings from Ringly ($195) and a fancy namesake to show off along with your business cards (pricing varies). You should walk into a room with all the pride and fashion sense in the world with a strut to match. Platforms add some sass and they are all the rage amongst women who are our fashion inspo like Solange Knowles. Solange has been seen sporting these platform oxfords by Stella McCartney ($995). If you want more bang for your buck, you can find a similar paid at NastyGal.com

MADE-MAGAZINE.COM POP CULTURE STYLE

57

For men, there are few items you shouldn’t go without. Most are basic, but can elevate your wardrobe from casual to GQ editor. A white collared shirt is a staple in every man’s closet and can be easily overlooked. You can grab this item from anywhere but the crisp and cool result will always be the same. A man should always keep a few options to mesh with denim or even trousers. Less is more when it comes to this staple.

Make a lasting impression with your grooming kit. Even your scent taps into the five senses and lingers even after you’ve left the office. Beards are still a trending facial factor and need to be maintained for the corporate standards. Take your mane with your selection of these fresh spin on beard oils. You can decide between BeardBrand’s citrus notes ($25), Men’s Society sensitive skin friendly beard oil ($29), or dapper and decadent moisturizing beard oil from Tom Ford ($50).

Shades are the next staple that you should invest your dollar into. Yes, you can bring your festival fan favorites along with you. Shades are an appropriate menswear essential. Ray Bans Wayfarers are a trusty brand to keep the UV rays away. Black is too heavy and solid for this season, so opt for a tortoise shell print instead ($150).

Preparation is noticed and valued, especially in the corporate world. Show your co-workers that your time is money by sporting a nice timepiece. Gold and silver are so cliché, for the Spring, dive into more slates, stones, and earthy material. Keep track of your day with a Nixon timepiece ($150).
