Stagecoach launches new image and ethos For nearly 30 years Stagecoach have helped millions of students explore their creativity through performing arts. This September sees the launch of a new brand philosophy (and a vibrant new logo!) which has altered with the recognition that the arts are becoming increasingly essential in the development of wellrounded, sociable individuals and how much a confident personality can help students gain advantage in their future prospects. Stagecoach Principals are committed to reinforcing ‘creative courage’ when exploring creativity through singing, dancing and acting classes. Stagecoach Highgate Principal, Odette Garvey says, ‘Singing, dancing and acting are fantastic hobbies for children to enjoy. I see students come to Stagecoach who are quiet at first but whose confidence grows as they get to know fellow pupils and get involved with routines and singing and see there is nothing to fear by expressing themselves. We also help students to become aware of how they come across on camera and how they can best help themselves develop further in their presentation skills as people, not just as performers.’

NEWS A Busy Summer Term at St Christopher School

Looking for flexible, home-based, part-time work?

The Early Years and Junior School children have enjoyed a busy summer term at St Chris. With a number of trips, Science Week, Poetry Week, Sporting events and a Teddy Bears Picnic the summer holiday brings a well deserved rest! Science Week included a 360 dome in the Sports Hall where all the children were able to experience the sky at night and identify constellations. Poet, Ross Sutherland, visited the school during Poetry Week to share his work and enthuse the children to enjoy the creativity of poetry and experience it as a genre. The Year 5 and 6 Cricket team hosted Duncombe School pupils and they scored an incredible 241 for O against Duncombe’s 229 for 4 and residential trips to Cuffley, West Runton and Cornwall enabled our Year 3, 4 and 5 children to try their hand at many different activities and, of course, a trip to the Eden Project for Year 5.

Come and work for Families Online in Families North London! You’re reading this, so we hope you already love Families magazine. But did you know Families also has a new website?

Not for girls, not for boys, Polarn O. Pyret make clothes for children

– 15% Discount for Families readers (FAM15)! Scandinavians are renowned for their functional design and progressive social attitudes. The top four ranking countries for gender equality are all Scandinavian. How does this translate into clothing for babies and children? Leading childrenswear brand, Polarn O. Pyret of Sweden, have been designing unisex clothing for over 40 years with a philosophy to ‘let children be children’. Famous for their classic stripes in navy and red, Polarn O. Pyret’s head designer Karina Lundell states “There is no difference in the body-shape of girls and boys until around age 12 years. So we design most of our clothing to be worn by children, not just boys or girls. What colour they choose is up to them!” Unisex clothing is easier to hand down and PO.P is renowned for durability, the clothes are made to be worn by as many children as possible, not just one. The cost-per-wear value goes up and impact on the environment goes down. Find your favourite unisex styles be they; stripes, animal prints, motors, sweet treats, cityscapes, sharks, beach scenes or just a plain colour from any part of the PO.P rainbow. You choose. Families Online re-launched in July, with 342 local websites covering the whole of the UK. Like our magazine, it is the go-to site for parents, carers and grandparents, offering all the information they need to enjoy family time in their local area. An Area Manager plays a pivotal role in the success of each local site and is responsible for creating content for their local site, managing social media, marketing the site to local businesses and selling advertising on the site. If you are a local parent who loves exploring what your local area has to offer with your family, this opportunity may suit you! The role can be performed at home, working round the needs of your family – and all you need is a computer and an interest in introducing other local parents to everything that’s on offer in your community! Ideal candidates will have an understanding of how to put together good content for the site, experience with social media and the confidence to present the site to potential clients. So why not take a look at the site at www.familiesonline.co.uk For further information about Area Manager roles, contact recruitment@familiesonline.co.uk

Parenting

A French “Pause” for all occasions F rom the moment a new baby is born, parents do everything they can to protect and help their children. A new-born is fragile, precious and needs to be looked after. However, there comes a time when the instinct to jump in and fix everything actually slows a child’s progress.

There are two main areas where children need to be given a little time: sleep and patience. There are two broad camps of prevailing thought on these matters – I am going to propose a middle-way instead. First, what are the two schools of thought? For sleep the division is between the self-soothers and the sensitive reactors. The self-soothing camp believes a child should be left alone, to self-sooth, even if this means a child screaming its head off. At the opposite extreme, parents jump straight in trying to comfort a child at the first sign of a gurgle. Our solution? “The Pause”. Children sleep in much shorter sleep cycles than adults, and between each phase of sleep, it is not unusual for a

child to gain awareness almost to the point of being awake. At this point, a child may well make various natural noises. But left to his own devices, will then start towards the next deep sleep cycle. The risk here, is of jumping in to check on a baby, and actually waking the child completely. The point of the pause, is to pause a parent’s protective instincts, and observe the child. Is the child just mid-cycle, or does he or she actually need something? The Pause also ensures a parent does not go all the way to the extreme of just leaving a child when he or she is clearly in distress. A child needs to feel loved and supported and the risk with selfsoothing, is that a child will not learn to feel safe – but rather will feel abandoned. The Pause allows a parent to assess if their child actually needs support, and can then provide it as required. This practice also follows into all other areas as a child grows up. If two adults are having a conversation when one of their children comes up, the usual reaction is to either stay “stop” or to immediately give the child attention. Again the middle way works here by saying “wait”. If said in a short, sharp manner, a child will usually stop in its tracks and wait. If it really is pressing, the child will not be put off by a simple “wait”. Yet, over time, the length of time a child is used to waiting will increase – even if at first it must be kept short. A child has to learn that waiting gets result. Finishing your verbal paragraph is the perfect length to start with, but once a child understands that “wait” does mean you will give them attention once you are ready, the length of time can be increase successfully. In her excellent book “How to Talk so Kids will Listen”, Adele Faber writes of the advantages of a short direct message. Children quickly lose interest in long explanations – so a short “wait” is much more effective than a more laborious reply. Children have the ability to improve their patience skills, and as adults we have a responsibility to help them experience it. A child that is content with waiting, is the start of a child who can develop internal resources to cope with frustration. Philippe Fraser, Director of the Bilingual Nurseries group, with the Mars Montessori nursery in Angel www.bilingualnurseries.com.

Back-to-School: Headlice

Education

How to cope with those nasty nits It’s every parent’s nightmare; the notices go up at school: “a case of headlice has been reported, so please check your children’s heads”. Your child begins to scratch. How do you cope with headlice – and can they be prevented?

What are headlice? Headlice, also known as nits, are tiny insects that live in human hair and feed on blood. They are very small – they range from the size of a pinhead to a sesame seed, so it’s no surprise that they are difficult to see. Their discarded egg cases are white and look a bit like dandruff stuck to the hair. It’s often these empty cases, the ‘nits’, that you notice first, especially behind the ears and there may also be small, red, itchy bumps on the back of the neck, which is where the insects have bitten your child.

Opening Monday 19th September 2016 The Littlehaven Nursery 21 Castlehaven Road Camden Lock NW1 8RU Open Mon Fri 8am – 6pm for 51 weeks of the year Visit our website: www.thelittlehavennursery.com Follow us on Twitter: twitter.com/havennursery1 or Facebook: www.facebook.com/thelittlehavennursery

Or just give us a ring on 020 7692 2293 to arrange a visit

Headlice facts: • They can live under water for several hours • They are passed from head to head when children sit and play together • They are not a sign of being dirty – they prefer clean hair • They do not only affect children, so always check your own hair too • They can’t jump

Are they obvious? One of the main problems with headlice is that they are tiny, so they’re difficult to spot and although most children will have telltale signs such as itching and the feeling of something moving in their hair, other children may have no idea at all. It’s often these children whose parents don’t realise they have headlice who will keep spreading it through the class, so even if your child displays no symptoms, always check regularly.

How to check Your best friend is now your nit comb. When you wash your child’s hair, apply plenty of conditioner and comb through their hair in sections, making sure you don’t miss any areas. Look at the comb and check for small dots – they may be black, reddish brown, brown or grey. These are the lice. These should be removed under a hot tap in the basin or into a cup of hot water. Combing is your most important weapon against headlice, as even if you use a lotion or spray from the pharmacists, eggs may still hatch after you have treated the hair.

What to treat the hair with A pharmacist can sell you an over-the-counter remedy which you use in the hair. You have to treat all family members and most products will tell you to treat again after a couple of weeks to take care of any eggs that slip through the net; lice have a 30-day life span, during which a female can lay five to 10 eggs a day. Some lotions are not suitable for the under-twos or for pregnant and breastfeeding women.

Can I prevent them? Whilst there is some evidence that they dislike tea tree oil and lavender, you can’t really prevent an infestation. Sorry. By Sally J. Hall Sally is a writer and editor who has written for all the main parenting titles as well as The Independent and The Mail. She is author of Eco Baby and contributing author to Watch My Baby Grow (Dorling Kindersley).

Education Getting organized (for success!) this term

As proven by the phenomenal global success of the Konmari* tidying method, the joy of being truly organised can be a powerful thing. Being prepared and organised is also the key to avoiding panic and anxiety about homework, assignments and exam revision. The basics A weekly planner for homework and projects or assignments is a vital organizational tool for any student. Using different colours to highlight which work has a short deadline or is a longer-term project can enhance the effectiveness of recording deadlines. The planner should also include regular events such as hockey practice and one-off events such as concerts that might interrupt usual study times, so that these can be taken into account in planning the weekly workload. Students need a work area where they will be uninterrupted and comfortable. The kitchen table may be fine for an only child, but it’s usually better to find a quieter place that’s dedicated to studying and has everything they need laid out. It’s important to keep a file for each subject, with section dividers for different topics, so that notes and handouts can be filed after each lesson and won’t pile up. It sounds trivial, but having a full supply of stationery to hand can make all the difference and avoids wasting time searching for highlighters or the hole-punch!

Revision specifics It’s a good idea to start revision early and make a realistic timetable: ideally a daily plan of work, broken down into subject areas. Help with organizing revision into manageable sections for 30 minute revision sessions is available online, e.g. the BBC Bitesize site. It’s helpful to build in some daily variety between topics, as well as remembering to build in mealtimes, leisure activities and very frequent short breaks during study. The right tools can help a lot in being organised. In addition to the subject files, a separate notebook for each subject can be useful for revision note taking. It’s also a good idea to plan ahead to be organised for active learning, with a supply of large sheets of paper and coloured pens for “spider maps” or colourful posters that can be displayed on the wall to see regularly, and access to a phone app or webcam to record reciting or acting out key learning points. Clubs, Classes & Activities

The benefits of after school clubs and classes Whether or not you think you may be raising the next Picasso or David Beckham, there’s no doubting the pluses of after school clubs. While finances may not permit your little ones being involved in different activities every night of the week, there’s no doubt that a couple of well-chosen clubs can be great for giving your child an insight into areas that the school curriculum doesn’t cover.

So, why are clubs so important? Team sports like football, rugby, and netball are not only brilliant for keeping kids active but also helping them learn team work where they can begin to appreciate what’s good for the whole team, rather than just thinking of themselves. Competitive sports are also great for learning difficult life lessons like being a gracious winner and loser. Meanwhile, learning a musical instrument is ideal for discovering the art of practice, patience and persistence. The list is endless. There are clubs for almost anything you can imagine.

The following 6 pages are packed with suggestions for some of the best local providers of skill-building fun for young and old alike! Classes for Grownups Artsdepot Artsdepot (N12) runs a wide range of courses and classes for all ages and abilities. This includes workshops for pre-school children, Youth Theatre and Youth Dance companies, and a variety of classes for adults.
