Get Pedalling this March Former Olympian and TV presenter Sharron Davies is encouraging families to cycle and scoot the school run by taking part in The Big Pedal, an inter-school competition organised by the charity Sustrans. Sharron Davies MBE, Olympic medallist and founder of www.Parents4sports.com said: “Parents are often bombarded with advice on keeping their children healthy and while they’re juggling family-life with work-life the potential of the school run can easily be overlooked. Sharron, who cycles or scoots with her son to school every day, continued: “I believe that an active journey to school should become a part of a family’s morning routine, just like brushing your teeth. “That’s why I’m encouraging schools across the UK to take part in The Big Pedal this March, and give cycling and scooting to school a try.” The Big Pedal (2 - 20th March, 2015) encourages pupils to lead healthier lives and reduce traffic around the school gates, by challenging them cycle or scoot their journey to school for 10 days.

Workshops! Eleven plus focused learning in small stimulating groups. A fun and effective way to prepare for exams!

W

e discovered many years ago that children enjoy topping up their understanding and knowledge by working in small intensive groups with expert teachers. Listening to other children’s valuable contributions seems to stimulate children into wanting to participate and wets their appetite to contribute and learn more.

These intense group settings provide an enjoyable, energetic and productive environment to achieve results - quickly! Collaborative fact finding and peer presentation really motivates children- suddenly they

10

want to produce their best and learn as quickly as they can. From our experience, we know workshops can prove to be more effective sometimes than individual tutoring, and excellent complementary learning, or a kick start for waning interest. Many new workshops offered at the eleven plus include topics in both maths and English, which are not fully covered in primary schools, as they are not covered in sufficient depth, or at all, in Key Stage 2.

NORTHWEST (LONDON) MARCH/APRIL 2015

What to look for? English workshops should focus on understanding how to approach answering questions on a range of comprehension texts, including poetry. Fact finding and inference are skills that will be tested through comprehension questioning. Strategies for understanding words in context and unknown vocabulary, should all form part of the preparation and learning as well as spelling, grammar and punctuation. In some cases, verbal reasoning skills will be needed along with Cloze procedure (finding words in context).

Education

“Collaborative fact finding and peer presentation really motivates children”

Maths workshops should include a range of higher level topics. Ratio and proportion is one of the most important topics for the eleven plus exam. Many questions rely on a clear understanding together with the experience of tackling exam-style questions.

Another area of great importance is understanding and using algebra and how to demystify this, the most powerful of all maths topics. Children need to recognise how to work with numbers and letters; to answer questions based on formulae; work with equations all the way up to simultaneous equations and create and solve equations from worded problems. An important focus is handling eleven plus puzzle-based questions. Many eleven plus exam questions are based on common puzzles. They also require a certain way of thinking. Children will need to know codebreaking, shapes within shapes and logic puzzles. They will need practical strategies on how to handle puzzles in general and practise with typical eleven

Every eleven plus paper has difficult questions, the kind that make students wonder where to start. Children need to be able to identify and understand which topic is behind difficult questions; select the correct methods to solve them and make sure the relevant working out is shown. These are now the basis of the ‘tutor-proof’ new CEM style exams. We believe these new tests are positive, as they prevent children from being over tutored and crammed to get into a school that’s not right for them, where they may sink. However, we also believe that the right calibre of child should be given the opportunity to familiarise themselves with these new styled questions, and workshops are a great platform for this. If you would like your child to try them, please contact us for details. Supporting your

Autistic child Tom Male, Age 4 Autism Spectrum Disorder

T

om was verbal, but had limited communication skills. He displayed aggression in the form of hair pulling when seeking Mum’s attention. Nonetheless he was very affectionate towards his family. He showed no interest in any other toys, but his racing car set. When Tom was not playing with his cars, he constantly raided the kitchen cupboard for treats.

Tom can say his numbers, but not in the correct order. Mum spent three months trying to get him to count in order and apply quantities but had no luck. Mum was anxious about moving him along, so began working on the alphabet.

12

Is mum doing the right thing? How can mum make use of Tom’s current achievements and areas of interest? Autism is a lifelong diagnosis that can greatly impact a child’s ability to learn and explore the world around them.

Applied Behavioural Analysis – A new approach to learning? Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) is an intervention used to modify behaviour and learning, through the use of reinforcement (rewards). Reinforcement increases the likelihood of a desirable behaviour occurring again. The concept of using ABA is to break down tasks into manageable components to facilitate learning. ABA has led to considerable improvements in behaviour and educational attainment with lasting outcomes. Not only are programmes personalised to meet a child’s needs, it provides simple and measurable

steps to understanding abstract concepts that are usually challenging such as emotions, prepositions or reasoning.

How can ABA be applied? Unknown to Mum, Tom had no concept as to how numbers were meaningful in the real world. After applying the principles of ABA, mum worked on three numbers at a time i.e., counting one to three, and increasing this once mastery had occurred. Mum placed numbers on Tom’s racing car and would point to the numbers while counting. Whenever Tom repeated the order correctly he was rewarded with one of his favourite treats or a hug. He began to count in order and understood the fundamental principle of counting.

Autism is a lifelong diagnosis that can greatly impact a child’s ability to learn and explore the world around them. As basic as numbers are, if Tom didn’t understand that these numbers followed an order and represented a quantity, numbers would never be meaningful. In turn, affecting future ability to understand everyday concepts such as money handling and time telling.

child isn’t making significant progress.

To address Tom’s aggression he was required to tap mum on the knee to gain her attention and mum also reaffirmed this by expressively saying ‘Mum’ while Tom was doing so. As a result Tom is no longer pulling hair to gain attention.

ABA programmes are mainly set up as home programmes with very few schools taking on an ABA support. We hope that educational provisions will become more aware of ABA services and apply these methods in schools, even if it means putting away their traditional methods and taking on a new approach to learning.

Why I’m passionate about ABA? Unfortunately there is still a way to go. School provisions are not adequately supporting pupils with special educational needs (SEN). Often the national curriculum assumes that a child progresses at a particular stage. SEN pupils may struggle with some early concepts of learning, meanwhile teachers assume that mastery has occurred before they are asked to move on. Parents are then left frustrated that their

ABA is a positive step forward. Like school, techniques used in ABA can become a suitable platform for a child to acquire the necessary skills to build a mental representation about the world around them.

Childcare

How to choose the best nursery for your child By Hannah Hunter

F

or many parents, nurseries are the ideal choice for childcare. They offer working hours, with a lot of flexibility - you can choose hours to suit you, from a few half days to full working weeks. Nurseries give children the opportunity to socialise with groups of other children and adults. They can also give a reassuring continuity of care, with an assigned key worker. Your child may be at the same setting from babyhood, right until they start at school. Finding the right nursery can be a difficult and stressful process. The first time you hand over full-time care of your precious offspring to someone else is always going to be emotional, so you want to be absolutely sure that you have made the right choice for all of you.

Different types of nursery It’s important to research what’s available as early as possible to find the best fit. This webpage www.gov.uk/find-nurseryschool-place directs you to your local council’s website, which will list all Ofstedchecked registered childcare providers. Your different options may include: Day Nurseries – great for working parents, as they are usually open from 8am-6pm Nursery Schools – for older toddlers (usually about 2 and a half and up) these nurseries offer a more structured preparation for school Nursery classes in school – usually run for the year before reception, they have a similar structure to nursery schools, though often only run half-day sessions. Montessori and Steiner nurseries – Montessori philosophy informs how their

20

schools are run, they are seen as the originators of child centred learning, and there is a focus on developing each child’s independence and skills. Focusing on creative play, Steiner schools don’t believe in any formal teaching until the age of 6.

Your first visit Make time to look around potential nurseries, well before you are going to need to use them. Read the Ofsted report (www.ofsted.gov.uk) and make a list of your priorities before you go. See if you can find out any first hand information from friends (though bear in mind what’s good for one family might not work for another). Things to consider:

Staff and ethos See what the turnover of staff is (always a good indicator of happiness) and check their qualifications. The presence of older staff members brings added life experience and suggests that the nursery values its staff enough to pay for this. Check out the routines, such as what food they offer and when it’s served, or when and where the children can nap.

Cost Be realistic in how much you can pay. A perfect work-life balance doesn’t mean working more hours to pay for a ‘better’ nursery! Most nurseries have funded places for 3 to 5-year-olds, and your workplace may offer childcare vouchers, a tax-free way to pay. You may also be eligible for childcare tax credits, to find out more go to www.gov.uk/help-withchildcare-costs

NORTHWEST (LONDON) MARCH/APRIL 2015

The ‘feel’ of the place Going by gut instinct alone isn’t advisable, but if you don’t get a good feeling, it might not be the place for your child. Happy staff and children can make up for a lack of perfection in other areas. Look out for children’s work on the walls, and staff who actually play with the kids rather than stand around chatting.

Your own needs! There might be a wonderful nursery half an hour drive away from you, but consider how will both of your tiredness levels be after this daily journey - would you be better to find somewhere closer that is a good fit? Equally the most convenient, say a work-place nursery, may not be the best for your child. Useful links www.ndna.org.uk National Day Nurseries Association offer expert advice and information for parents looking for childcare. The Family and Childcare Trust is a campaigning organisation with helpful information for parents. This site will help you find your local Family Information Service: http://findyourfis. familyandchildcaretrust.org/kb5/ findyourfis/home.page giving local information, advice and assistance to parents, carers and professionals on the range of children, family and young people’s services. www.ofsted.gov.uk www.montessori.org.uk www.steinerwaldorf.org

January is consistently stressful because it always entails planning MidiMe’s birthday celebrations whilst simultaneously ransacking my handbags and drawers for all my business receipts and doing my accounts in time for the tax return deadline. The self-inflicted fatigue was largely caused by the effort it took to conceal from Midi-Me the fact that I was watching Celebrity Big Brother every day. (I know. But I just couldn’t help it this time.) The birthday came and went without major incident (by “without incident” I mean specifically without my having a personal breakdown). Midi-Me is the queen of our household, so naturally she had 3 birthdays. Friday was all about The Fahmleee: Twofer pizza from Pizza Hut, halved baked potatoes with sour cream artfully plonked on top and chicken legs in the oven. My super-duper niece made a Ferrero Rocher inspired cake; Bob was therefore my uncle. Saturday was the day of Billy Elliot and what I will henceforth refer to as “Coatcushiongate”. I had cannily bought the tickets to the show (that she had desperately wanted to see for about a year) when they were on offer at Christmas with getinolondontheatre.co.uk (worth bookmarking that site for offers). Here’s the thing: both Midi-Me and I are properly short and we were sitting behind a couple of averagely tall members of a hen party, dressed in pink hen party sashes and carrying special hen party gift bags and with their hair in hen party up-dos that added about 2 inches to their already not inconsiderable height. Midi-Me therefore folded up her fleece coat and sat on it and I folded up my very lightweight feather filled coat and gave it to her for extra comfort. We adjusted ourselves accordingly (-Midi-Me became the height of an averagely short grown-up whilst I remained the height of a ten year old boy) and had a natter in the few minutes remaining before the start of the show, trying to zone out from all the chatter around us. In between all this however, we became aware of an intentionally loud voice behind us: “Now look, that girl’s not that little... When she was standing she was nearly as tall as her mother!... Well, some people are just SELFISH, aren’t they?” I realised the voice was talking about me! And Midi-Me! We turned around. “How very DARE you??” I didn’t say. Fumbling

around, avoiding our stare was a mum sitting next to her daughter, a few years younger than mine. “If there is a problem, or your daughter can’t see, you can ask directly. We don’t want to block anyone’s view.” Midi-Me sank herself down in her seat a bit more. “Thank you” said the lady “You are very welcome.” I replied, more than a little sanctimoniously, I’m afraid. Unnecessary conflict averted, we went on to enjoy Billy Elliot which was excellent. The next day, more celebration! I took her schoolmates to see “Into the woods” which I am still singing in my head two weeks later, substituting the word “woods” for any room or vehicle or item of clothing I happen to be stepping into – take that as a warning if you haven’t seen it already. We followed that with dinner at TGI Friday’s. The kids’ food was okay but those of us adults who eschewed meat for Tex Mex found a plate of Ew in front of us. Mine looked and tasted like an old slipper. Such fun. Check out the guide on page 16 for birthday party ideas. I wish I had. Guess what? One of my talented Sing and Sign mummies is a professional actress in a West End musical! Heather Craney is in Made in Dagenham with Gemma Arterton and she says every woman should go see it, especially if they have children. It is on until 11th April at the Adelphi theatre on the Strand. Go see it and let’s chat about it on my new page on facebook...

Dreaming of

DISNEY?

Well here are our

Top 5 Do’s and Don’ts!

A

holiday to Disney World is a dream come true for many children, and if they are lucky enough to realise it, it’s their parent’s dream to make that holiday a fairy tale of a lifetime for their precious little ones! So let us sprinkle some magic fairy dust on how to make the most out of your Disney holiday and make your hard earned pounds go that extra bit further!

are within quick reach of all the Disney Parks and give you the luxury of your own pool, games rooms and many of the comforts that make your stay that much more homely. These are very popular with our clientele with young families as kitchens are fully equipped and there is space to break away from each other for playing and sleeping! Sometimes booking this option can save you up to £1000-1500 overall and most packages include car hire too! Talk to your travel agent for more details.

1. Advance bookings - make no mistake when planning such a magical holiday to plan at least 6 months in advance. We always recommend this to our customers and it helps us achieve the most competitive rates for their dream trip. A Disney package can flow into a good few thousand pounds so you want to know you’ve spent your money well - and with a longer length of time till departure many travel agents, like ourselves, help you spread the cost of the holiday too.

3. What’s the right age to visit? - this is often a Disney million dollar question we get asked, and truthfully, it doesn’t matter! Whether your children are 2 or 12 there is so much for everyone to enjoy whether it’s the Magic Kingdom or Epcot it’s always money well spent and a holiday to treasure!

2. Fly Drive vs Disney Resort Hotels people often think the best experience will come from staying in a Disney Resort Hotel, but don’t overlook the villa option! They are great value for money, comfortable and give you a real taste of ‘American Living’! Many

4. Plan it out - Before you go, sit down with the family and look through the Parks online and think about what is on you ‘must see’ list. Once your there, make haste in getting routine and planning your stay! You have a lot of parks to cover and 7-10 days will just fly by! This is even more important if you have some little ones and some older ones whose interests vary, so have a plan for what to cover and for who before you set out each day. Also make use of the ‘My Disney

Experience’ App. This will help you plan your day and let you program your attractions and dining options including utilising the ‘fast pass’ so that you can book your slot on a particular ride! 5. Make use of all the facilities - from using their buses and shuttles, to renting their strollers, have a good look at the maps of all the parks before you set out so you are aware of where you can stop to nurse the baby and freshen up if need be! People are often unaware that there are many free things to do at Disney. Free events are generally with all information points dotted around the resorts and at the various hotels. You will need to check with them directly or their websites but offers can range from art classes at Hollywood Studio’s Magic of Disney Animation, to free international Soda at Club Cool - and so much more including free illuminations, fireworks viewing and even movies under the stars!
