News & Views from around North West London Parents Paradise at Bushey re-opens after flooding A family run indoor play centre in Bushey that was overcome by flood waters on Friday 7th February has finally been able to reopen its doors following eight weeks of clearing out, drying and refurbishment. The estimated cost of not only the refurbishment but also their loss of business could reach nearly £500,000. The owners have been overwhelmed by support from the local community. In the first few days after the flood, as well as staff arriving to help, they had customers turn up wearing their wellies, after dropping their children at school, asking what they could do. Parents Paradise re-opened on Tuesday 8 April at 9:30am – exactly 2 months since after they closed. www.parentsparadise.eu

Daffodils for Mothers’ Day The children in the Foundation Stage at Aldenham Prep School entertained their mums with a performance of water themed songs and poems as part of their Mothers’ Day celebrations. Following the show all the mums were given tea, with some beautifully decorated cakes, in their child’s classroom before being presented with daffodils planted by the children in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care as their Mothers’ Day gift. All the mums thoroughly enjoyed the very special afternoon and were delighted with their gifts and handmade cards. Dogs Trust would like to say a big thank you to its Freedom foster carers in the Greater London area for all of their hard work last year. Dogs Trust Freedom Project is a pet fostering scheme providing vital help for families escaping domestic violence. Many refuges are not able to accept pets, so pet owners often remain in a violent situation for fear of what might happen to their pet if they leave it behind. Over 50 victims of domestic violence were helped in 2013 in Greater London, with 77 pets fostered, something which simply couldn’t have been achieved if it wasn’t for our amazing foster carers who look after the pets in their own home until they can be safely reunited with their owners. If you would like to help us make a difference by becoming a foster carer please visit www.dogstrustfreedomproject.org.uk or call 0800 298 9199.

Why is important to Children’s Learning fascinating for the soul than any console, private tutor, or television programme.

T

here is a real danger that modern, urban, technological life is desensitising children to the extent that their wellbeing is threatened. With mental health issues fast becoming one of the three most significant threats to global health, the benefits of time and green space (two rare commodities for the lives of modern children) should be significant and immediate considerations for parents on behalf of their children. If you ask children to sit still and quiet in a rural setting … a woodland or open field without too much urban noise pollution … it is amazing how swiftly their sense are re-awakened. They will quickly notice movement and sound to a far greater extent – a bumble bee fifty yards away, a deer half a mile distant. That is generations of awareness being rekindled – in the same way that looking into a camp fire, or the sea, proves far more

Original thought, that key necessary skill for the future entrepreneur, is brought to mind by exercise and outdoors living. A simple economic fact, for those who rate such things preeminent, is that our children today will be better advised in all ways to chase their passion rather than their pension. At York House School, our broad curriculum is matched by our commitment to provide an exciting and diverse environment for learning. We empower our teachers to provide stimulating and memorable lessons where pupils are challenged to discover, to collaborate or to create as part of their learning experience.

one, outside and it needs to rethink itself. The ‘timid’ personality can grow stronger in the outdoors, the senses becoming more engaged in the independence of the situation, and the confidence builds. The normally ‘confident’ child can be unused to a night of camping and playing team games under a night sky. Each has learnt something major about a minor change to where their learning has taken place. We encourage our pupils to develop a self-disciplined and hard-working approach. This will help them achieve good academic results whilst, just as importantly, encouraging three character traits which we believe to be vital characteristics of future success and happiness: 1. A positive outlook.

Learning is not confined to sitting behind a desk either, and often extends beyond the classroom walls altogether, making the most of our wonderful setting and exciting new Outdoor Learning facilities.

2. Self-reliance - for only when we are truly self-reliant are we in a position to help others. 3. The ability to leave people and places better than we find them.

One maxim that always seems to ring true is: ‘It’s not what you do in life, but how you do it, that matters’. Classroom learning will always benefit keen and eager minds of course. But take that same mind, or an easily distracted

Everything we do aims to give the child the best possible preparation for his or her future studies and adult life. Mr Jon Gray | York House Headmaster

Why do I have to do

Homework?

Next time your child asks why he has to do homework, you’ll have the answer ready. We also have tips on how you can help. by Robina Cowan, Editor Families South East. when the school day ends and that responsibility for working continues beyond the classroom • To develop a strong work ethic.

■ Should parents get involved?

■ Homework is set:

The answer from experienced teachers is a resounding “yes!” One told us that “the improvement in a young child whose parent is hearing them read for 15-20 minutes a night is fairly astronomical compared to those who don’t, and the improvement carries right up to ages 7 or 8, by which time children are usually reading fluently.”

• For children to practise, reinforce and extend work that is taught in class

■ Homework diaries

■ What is homework for? Tempting though it might be - in order to hurry up the process, it is not the chance for you to show off how much you remember from your schooldays and do it for them!

• To enable teachers to find out whether or not pupils have understood the lesson • To help children develop skills of independent time management • To show what children are able to produce under unaided conditions • To encourage pupils to understand that school work does not finish

Most schools give out homework diaries, making it easier for parents to see what has been set, when it should be handed in, and providing a way for teachers and parents to communicate. If your child is taking longer than the expected time to do their homework, or if you had to explain how to work out the set maths, make a note in the homework diary so the teacher knows about it.

■ How to help Show an interest in your child’s work; point them in the right direction rather than telling them the answer; offer a snack and a drink while they work. Here are more tips from experts - the teachers. • Be aware of where and how your child works best. Some children need quiet, others prefer people around them. Some want to start their homework as soon as they are home to get it out of the way; others are better after a snack and a half hour ‘chill’ • Show a positive interest and monitor what is being done. Is it too much? Too little or rushed? Communicate with the school if you have concerns • Extend schoolwork with visits to museums and exhibitions - London offers so much that can bring subjects to life in a way no amount of books or websites can do • Ask your child if she is pleased with her homework (before leaping in to point out all the mistakes!), and offer praise where it is due - for example continued on page 11

homework children complete has little correlation with their level of academic success; in fact many believe homework can have a negative impact - particularly in relationships between children and their parents who are trying to get them to concentrate.

the work is neat, or well written, or answers the question really well • Time management is one of the hardest aspects for a child to get to grips with - but they’ll need to when it comes to siiting exams. Give your child a timer set for the duration of the homework and see how much they finish. Initially it can help if you remind your child when they are halfway through the time, and again when there are ten minutes left. This is good training and before long they will have adjusted to how much work they can produce in the allotted time

Homework may be more appropriate in secondary school where it is an invaluable tool in teaching hard work and self-discipline. Experts agree that homework should be varied and motivational - technology is proving useful, with an increasing number of tasks being completed online. Children may also be given activities to complete in their local community, for example at the library - while this is learning outside school, it is not homework in its more traditional sense. Homework clubs at school have also proved successful.

• Children who have been sitting at desks for most of the day often need to let of steam after school. A run around the park on the way home can dispel restlessness before settling down to homework • Set a positive example. Other members of the family can use homework time by taking up their own studies or settling down to a focused activity (such as sorting bills/ reading the paper/ ironing) at the same time.

■ All work and no play? Last September, a school in Guildford

abolished all homework apart from reading and occasional projects, for children aged seven to eleven. The school was graded 'outstanding' by Ofsted and the head teacher has seen no difference in achievement. In an article published by the TES, it is suggested that the amount of

As the debate continues, many schools are moving away from 'timed' homework slots and, only where appropriate, are concentrating on simple repetition and re-enforcement of skills being learnt during the day. The full article ‘All Work and No Play’ can be found at www.tes.co.uk.

Prep schools: What are they and how to choose the right one? By Ellen Arnison

Traditionally a preparatory school was where children went to ‘prepare’ to go to one of the major British public schools, such as Eton and Harrow, working up to them sitting the Common Entrance exam at 13. However, while that picture still exists in some cases, the situation now varies widely. Broadly, there are two kinds of prep school – one where the children leave at 11, perhaps after an 11 + exam, and one where the children sit the Common Entrance exam then leave at 13.

In some cases youngsters attend a prep school until they reach their 11 + exam and then transfer to a local (state) grammar school. The smaller classes and more focussed attention in a prep school can improve their chances. This is particularly appealing to parents who think their child won’t get what they require from the nearby state primaries. Traditionally boys attended prep schools up to age 13, either to sit the Common Entrance exam (part of the admissions process for academically selective secondary schools) and then

to move on elsewhere or to graduate to the attached senior school almost automatically. However, girls as well as boys now attend prep school on this basis as across the board the trend is to move from single-sex education to co-ed. d Does the school fit the basic requirements of you and your child in terms of gender, day and/or boarding, religious denomination, curriculum and location? d Does it meet your educational objectives in terms of offering the exams your child will need to sit?

d Will your child be happy there? Do you get good feedback from other parents and children?

d Does the school get a good report? How are the exam results, the general atmosphere and the teaching quality?

Some prep schools adhere to the National Curriculum but they are not bound to, which can give them freedom to offer a broader and more varied curriculum that isn’t burdened by tests. There isn’t always an entrance exam for preps schools, in many cases the

Your decision will be narrowed by considering if there is a school attached to your preferred secondary and what kinds of criteria they use to select pupils. Mummy on the Edge Angelina and Mini-Me go boho in ShoHo (- and Brick Lane... but that don't rhyme, innit.)

I

t's not unusual to find me hopping up and down while teaching my Sing and Sign baby signing classes (in Harrow, Bushey, Ricky and Stanmore) pretending to be a rabbit or pretending to need the loo. But it is rare for me to do so AFTER I have actually finished teaching for the morning and while everyone is leaving the hall; and especially while grinning like an idiot, punching the air, shedding a tear and making whooping noises. Well. That would just seem rude.

holiday activity for 11 – 16 year olds which was to start at 2.30 and go on for 2 hours (IF we turned up and queued from 1.30.) And no, in case you are wondering, we had no intention of using those two hours to wander the streets of ShoHo (Shoreditch/ Hoxton) and locate a hip hang-out where we could consume a daytime cocktail and honour our inner lush. We would of course have come back after an hour and a half to cheer as our high-achievers finished their pieces of art.

On the one occasion when this did happen however, there was a HUGH (sic – you'll get it soon) reason for my vocal and physical display of joy. Prima Donna of Positivity, one of my best mates in the whole world, had just informed me via gadgetphone that her 11 year old son (I will call him Futurestar) had won a part in the upcoming Peter Pan movie with Hugh Jackman! It all started at school in the lunch queue for chicken pasta, a non-vegetarian dish that Futurestar would not normally eat but just fancied on the particular day when people casting for the film happened to be walking around the school. There followed auditions and screen tests. Prima Donna of Positivity and I had both decided that the best thing to do was to put it to the back of our minds and not obsess about red carpets and going on a date with Hugh Jackman, when out of the blue she received the call. It was Just Meant To Be.

“Would” being the operative word. Unfortunately, after half an hour of VERY fruity language that Mini-Me had previously never heard exit these angelic lips (-because she has never before seen me try to park someone else's big black tank in a tight spot between two vehicles on a side street near Canon's Park tube station-) it became apparent that the children were not going to do any Ceramic Painting. Because it was Not Meant To Be.

Prima Donna of Positivity and I decided to take Futurestar and Mini-Me for a day out since we are both are the type to feel stifled if left to stew too long in the suburbs. Our destination was the Geffrye Museum and we hoped to catch Ceramic Painting, the free

By the time we arrived at the Geffrye Museum, all the places had been filled so we ate lunch together and walked around looking at roomsets from various points of time, Futurestar making very loud and repetitive electronic noises with his mouth (a role in Star Trek surely beckons) and I gaining understanding of the true nature of the difference between having a son and a daughter. I spotted Edwardian chairs that I swear I've seen starting at 15 quid recently on Ebay and items I remembered from my childhood living room. Although perplexingly, the 70s roomset did not contain a feature-lamp depicting a seminaked statue having a shower in a gazebo.

After all that we were not feeling enthusiastic about going home and fixing dinner so we hopped on a bus to Brick Lane where we mooched around kooky shops, looking at up-and-comingdesigner dresses and vintage clothing. Feeling the hipster-happeningness of Prima Donna of Positivity permeating my pores by osmosis, I invested in two vintage Italian handbags that will one day be bequeathed to Mini-Me. Unable to avoid the subject of dinner, and consulting Tastecard we found Loco Mojito where we stuffed Futurestar and Mini-Me's faces with burrito and nachos at 50% off. What's more, Prima Donna of Positivity and I got our cocktail after all. We took pictures of the kids which were photobombed by a well-meaning guy having dinner with his misses behind us. Poorly planned but perfectly executed; it was a wonderfully chilled day that was surely Meant To Be.
