Winding down: new Sleepy Tales The book publisher Penguin Random House has collaborated with The Children’s Sleep Charity to create collections of Sleepy Tales audiobooks designed to help children relax before bedtime. Ladybird Sleepy Tales (3 to 6 years) and Puffin Sleepy Tales (7+ years) are part soundscape, part descriptive narrative. They use relaxing sounds and soothing narrators’ voices to conjure calming settings and landscapes to help children feel calm and positive at the end of the day. Each tale is 15 minutes long and has been created to be interesting enough to hold children’s attention, but not to overexcite or overstimulate.

Sleepy Tales are designed to become part of a child’s bedtime routine, to be listened to before or after their bedtime story. Children can listen on their own or with a parent. Sweet dreams! More information at www.penguin.co.uk/books

Night Time Nappies to No Nappies Every parent looks forward to throwing away night-time nappies and pull-ups for good. Here, Psychotherapist Alicia Eaton offers step by step guidance to help your child on the way to staying dry all night.
Words Work
Plan Ahead
Avoid Rewards and Bribes
Phrases like: “Pretty soon, you’ll stop needing these at night-time….” trigger important thinking processes necessary to become dry at night. Explain to your child that soon they’ll be able to keep themselves dry all night and won’t need nappies/pull-ups.
Put a date in the diary and let you child know when you will stop using nappies/pull-ups (which actually prevent children learning how to take control because their absorbency means your child’s skin doesn’t feel wet).
They are a distraction and it will be doubly disappointing for your child if they’re not successful one night. Focus your child on learning how to stay dry at night.
Steps to the Bathroom Explain they will need to visit the bathroom instead. Walk through the steps they’ll take and practise this several times, telling them you will leave lights on so they can see their way easily.
Accidents Use an absorbent bed mat in between two layers of sheets. If your child is wet, remove the top layer and use the dry bed underneath.
Keep Track Track dry and wet nights during your training period so you can figure out what the cause of wet nights might be.
Drinks Declutter Ensure the bedroom floor is clutter-free so your child can easily move around at night.
Avoid drinks one hour before bedtime, but don’t restrict fluids during the day as this could make your child constipated - a common cause of bedwetting.
Deeper Sleep
Think Food
Avoid leaving night-lights on in the bedroom. A dark bedroom promotes deeper sleep patterns. This might be enough to ensure your child sleeps through without needing the toilet.
Avoid fizzy drinks, sugary foods, milk and fruit such as strawberries, grapes and melon at night-time as these affect the bladder.
Alicia Eaton is a trained psychotherapist and author of Stop Bedwetting in Seven Days published by Practical Inspiration Publishing. For more information, visit www.stop-bed-wetting-in-7-days.com/

Meet the real-life Willie Wonka!
Chocaficionado Willie Harcourt-Cooze has the best job in the world – making chocolate. And yes, the sweet truth is that it really is good for us. Claire Winter unwraps the story of the ultimate hot chocolate...
W
illie Harcourt-Cooze is an entrepreneur who may have the best job in the world, running his own chocolate making company, here in the UK. He became well known after starring in Channel 4’s fly-on-the-wall documentary Willie’s Wonky Chocolate Factory. CW: You found fame on the Channel 4 programme Willie’s Wonky Chocolate factory. Where did your love of chocolate begin? On a cocoa farm in Venezuela, I was given pure cacao to drink, just like the hot chocolate I make today with my 100% cylinders. This hot chocolate energised me and lifted my mood so much that right there and then I decided that it should be made available to everyone. Unlike coffee, cacao gives a slow release of energy that also releases endorphins. There is no slump, such as the one you get when drinking coffee or eating sugar. It’s purely natural, and this is also the reason I only use 100% natural ingredients in my chocolate. I believe all nutrition should come from nature. Of course, it also tastes much better.
CW: What is the most important thing that you have learnt being a chocolate entrepreneur? Creating chocolate is an everlasting adventure, and I have learned a lot of things along the way. The one thing that resonates though is to never compromise on the quality of ingredients as the finest ingredients make the best flavours. Everything I use in my chocolate is 100% natural, and I source the best flavours from around the world. CW: I know you are passionate about using pure ingredients in the chocolate you make. Why is it better to use quality ingredients? People have lost touch with what chocolate really is. It has lost its taste and become sugary, fatty confectionary. Cacao is actually packed full of vitamins and minerals. The ancient South American peoples drank it in religious ceremonies and called it the Food of the Gods. Only now, is research showing us a little of what this ancient civilisation saw in it. It has high levels of flavonoids, which can protect your heart, and it makes your body produce serotonin and feel-good endorphins too.
CW: You have lived in lots of different countries with your family, what is your favourite place?
Can you cheer us all up and tell us the health benefits of eating chocolate (in moderation)?
My dream of making the world’s best chocolate was born on Hacienda El Tesoro, high in the Cloud Forest in Venezuela, where I farmed cacao for over a decade. This is my favourite place in the world, and it always feels like I’m coming home when I return.
Research has identified that the high level of flavonoids in chocolate can lower blood pressure and protect your arteries. It even stimulates your body to produce serotonin, the brain’s natural anti-depressant, and feel-good endorphins typically created by exercising. To get these benefits however, you need to be
eating good dark chocolate. The higher the percentage of cocoa solids in the chocolate, the better it is for you. CW: Do you have a favourite family meal that you cook for your family? The children are all at different stages in their food journey due to being different ages. However, they all agree that they love Empanadas from South America. They can choose their own fillings according to their taste. One may have black beans, another with white cheese. They’ve been known to choose octopus as a filling too, they’re always a hit! How do you work around the demands of family life? It’s difficult, when you have a passion, to work around family life and compromises have to be made. When one area takes over, work or family, the other area suffers. It’s impossible to put 100% into both 100% of the time, and I must admit I have found it difficult to juggle. CW: What projects are you working on at the moment? We’re about to launch our ultimate hot chocolate, which is the first of its kind in the world. I used to make it just for friends and family and sell the surplus in my online shop. It has recently won an IndyBest award for taste and now we’re introducing it to shops. Keep an eye out for the magical package design! This is new and unique as it’s not industrial. It has nothing nasty in it, just two ingredients, the finest single estate cacao and natural raw cane sugar from Barbados; it tastes divine. It’s 100% natural, frothy and creamy, and beautiful with cow’s milk or vegan milks. Until the new package is launched, you can buy it in our online shop. PAYOFF https://www.williescacao.com

Christmas with Autism A mum with four autistic boys asks us to think for a moment about what it’s like for families with autism at Christmas. Sarah Ziegel suggests some great, practical ways you might offer support to make Christmas special - for everyone
C
hristmas can be an isolating time for parents of a child with special needs but don’t ‘not invite’ a family with autism to your Christmas gathering. Even if they cannot always come, and even if they have to leave early, your gift to the parents is priceless. Remember to relax your own rules of social engagement so you are not disappointed if things don’t turn out as usual. Here are some more invaluable tips.
Please do send an invitation Always invite a family with autism even if they usually say no. It’s very isolating to be a special needs parent. Just knowing that they have been invited can mean a lot. They will try to come if they can. Don’t stop inviting them. Check first Ask if they would prefer to come to a large social gathering or just be invited as a family for a quiet drink on their own. Manage your expectations If the family does come to an event, don’t be disappointed if they leave within minutes because their child is overwhelmed. The parents, like you, probably wish they could stay longer too. No surprises – guide to gifts Some children with autism don’t like surprises. Ask the parents what their child might like - an unwrapped gift may be a good idea. Sensory toys like a squishy ball or a hand-held light spinner might be appreciated but again, ask the familiesonline.co.uk
parents. A disappointed child will make you feel disappointed too so bear in mind that . some presents may not be opened. … and to food For many children with autism, food can be a tricky issue. Don’t expect them to sit down and eat everything you serve. They may have self imposed food restrictions around texture, colour or trying unfamiliar foods. Ask the parents to bring what their child would be happy to eat and perhaps warn your own children in advance that another child will be eating something different. If they can’t sit still at the table, they may be happier eating in a quieter space or while watching a favourite DVD. Socialising helps everyone Invite a child with autism to play with your children. They may not play directly with them. They may play alone. They may not speak or join in at all but being given the opportunity to socialise is vital. Even if they don’t appear to be participating, they will be learning from the experience. The first few play dates may be hard, but in time, repetition and familiarity should make it easier. Listening to parents Make time to listen. Everyone is busy at Christmas. Special needs parents can feel even more isolated than usual. A cup of coffee and time to talk may be the best Christmas gift you can offer a parent.
Email: editor@Familiesuponthames.co.uk • Tel: 07792 006546
Babysitting helps Offer to babysit if you can, so the parents can go to a Christmas party. Babysitters are hard to source at Christmas time and for those with special needs, babysitters are always in short supply. No queues If you are running a Christmas grotto at school, please don’t expect a child with autism to wait in a queue. Perhaps offer a private visit to Father Christmas before or after everyone else. A child may not know or understand who he is, but their parents might love a photo. About the author: Sarah Ziegel is the mother of four boys: all were diagnosed with autism by the age of three. They were non verbal but thanks to years of early intervention in the form of ABA (Applied Behaviour Analysis) they have exceeded all expectations and are now leading fulfilled lives as young men. Sarah’s book, A Parent’s Guide to Coping with Autism (Hale/Crowood), is a handbook for autism covering not only the practical side but how to cope emotionally too. It is available in bookshops and online. Sarah also blogs most days about her boys and autism on a Facebook page , A Parent’s Guide to Coping with Autism.

Top Ten Christmas Challenges hristmas ideas C T Entertain, Excite, Enjoy and Entice (them away from their screens) with Claire Winter’s road tested family games
his Christmas, bring out your favourite games to play at home with your family and friends. With a flurry of new games hitting our living room tables recently, the games market has seen something of a revolution. Now there are hundreds of games available that employ brainteasing strategies and flex your investigatory muscles. Here’s my Top Ten for a Top Family Christmas! Sherlock Holmes - Consulting Detective Thames Murders game Gather your loved ones, and don your deerstalkers to play this fun mystery game. You have to solve the case by interviewing witnesses, and tracing their steps through Victorian London. This is very much a challenge of the mental ability of the players, rather than a game of chance. The details are well-researched and give you a real sense of a bygone era. £34.90 Amazon The London Board Game The complexities of the London Underground system make this a great brain-challenging game for players of all ages. The board itself is the London Underground map, so while enjoying the race, you'll also learn more about London. Players must visit six of London's sightseeing hotspots, and the winner is the first person to get back to the mainline station where they started. £30 www.ltmuseumshop.co.uk Monopoly Cheaters Edition The new Cheaters Edition of Monopoly brings a fresh twist to the property trading game that was initially designed to warn players about the dangers of capitalism. This version encourages cheating and subterfuge! It includes 15 cheat cards that allow players to steal money from the bank and avoid paying rent. £17.74 Amazon Exploding Kittens Not technically a board game, this card game is for people who like explosions, laser beams, and kittens. All the players draw from the deck until one of them draws the exploding kitten. At this point, the only option for survival is to play a defuse card that allows them to place the kitten back into the deck. Beautifully designed and riotously funny! £19.99 Amazon Pictionary This drawing game has been a firm favourite since 1985. The latest edition has been updated with two levels of clues for adults and younger children, making it a fun game for all ages. It also has wipe clean markers and boards. Mattel has also released Pictionary Air, which uses an app and augmented reality, but I prefer the old school version! £21.99 Amazon

Dobble This fun picture card game is very popular in our house and it’s really addictive. It depends on speed of observation as players have to match pick out one icon from a group on a card that matches the same icon in a group on another card. This simple premise then forms the basis for five short mini-games, alternatively asking you to collect or discard cards as quickly as possible. Younger eyes and reflexes are at a definite advantage which means your 5 year old will beat you fair and square! £12.99 Amazon
Tales of Arabian Nights This game is unlike anything you’ll have played and is the closest you can come to being in your own adventure book on a board. You travel around the board choosing how to tackle each random event using a rulebook. Whatever option you choose it has an unpredictable consequence, which makes it both surprising and eventful! £49.98 Amazon Speech Breaker This challenging game for children age 14+ is great fun. You have to put on the game headset, talk into the microphone, and get your teammates to guess who, what, where without saying any of the words on the cards. But…the microphone jams your speech with a built-in delay. As you talk, you'll hear your delayed voice through the game headset, making it harder to speak clearly. Really hilarious! £25.52 Amazon Chess and Draughts According to academics, chess boosts intelligence and creativity, so this Christmas teach your children the tactical games of Chess and Draughts to improve their mental agility. These timeless games are also a great way to share one-on-one time with your child. £19.99 Amazon Nudge Nudge is an incredibly simple, yet insanely addictive strategy game for children age 14+ designed to send you and your opponent over the edge. Designed with the environment in mind, the game is made from 100% recyclable materials including the game board, single-colour packaging, and fully biodegradable game discs. £9.99 www.nudgegames.co.uk

Christmas all sewn up! Did you know that most wrapping paper can’t be recycled? When Twickenham teenager Georgie Cox discovered this she came up with a stylish eco-friendly alternative. Her 100% cotton wraps and gift bags can be used and re-used in place of paper for a lifetime. Georgie, who has Aspergers, ADHD, dyslexia and sensory disorders says “We can all help save the planet by re-using things. I’m sure that anyone who thinks about it would want to.” In addition to her all-year-round range, this Christmas Georgie is offering a Christmas gift set – three bags and three fabric tags ready wrapped in their own Christmas bag with a cardboard swing tag just ready for you to write on. A perfect gift for just £12. A great Christmas idea. Available at FabWraps.co.uk or The People Hive in Twickenham
Growing Kindness The Kindness Co-op was launched by two friends, Lucie and Charlie, with the purpose of promoting kindness towards others (especially amongst children), ourselves and the environment. In 2018 they launched The Kindness Co-op, a socially responsible brand offering organic clothing for children and adults featuring inspirational designs. Since then, the brand has grown and now also offers a range of accessories including tote bags, notebooks and badges. It was important to Lucie and Charlie to have a philanthropic element to the brand so with every item sold they donate a portion of the profit to the charity YoungMinds. Nobody's perfect, but as concern about climate change grows, rest assured The Kindness Co-op do everything they can to ensure that they source from ethical suppliers, use organic materials where appropriate, minimise the use of plastics and only use packaging that can easily be recycled. To be part of the kindness revolution check out their full collection at www.thekindnessco-op.com 16 • Kingston • Richmond • Brentford • Isleworth • Spelthorne • North Surrey - November/December 2019
