M i stars off the Music h ffuture could ld get on the h ffast trackk to stardom d with a local rock school. Local mum, Dawn Hamblet is bringing two new Clive’s Easy Learn Rock & Pop schools to the Locks Heath and Whiteley areas. These are music classes that kids love - teaching guitar, bass, drums, keyboards and vocals. Dawn says ‘the way we teach music is really different to the way it is often taught, where you have a lesson and then go away and practice on your own in the bedroom. In our classes students work through structured modules with their tutor for 45 minutes and each class ends with a 15 minute jam session, so they get to practice their skills in a live band from the start.’ This is a great way to get youngsters between 7 & 17 socialising and learning together in a fun friendly environment. They also put on a concert every six months in which all the students can play, raising money for charity in the process. The lessons have been running elsewhere in the country and have successfully taught over 10,000 people to play. Dawn runs free taster sessions so you can try before you commit.

QE Country Park one of the best!
The New Theatre Royal has been awarded a grant of £939,900 by the Heritage Lottery Fund in support of exciting regeneration and development plans for the back-lot of the Theatre in collaboration with the University of Portsmouth. The funding has been granted specifically for the repair and restoration of the Grade II* listed historic building, including restoration of the stage house, orchestra pit, offices, access facilities and a new Creative Learning Centre, for use by local groups and organisations. It represents a significant proportion of the money needed and will ensure that this forty-year project, which began after the fire in 1972 will at last come to fruition, with the volunteers seeing their long-held ambition fulfilled. The money will also allow the Theatre to expand volunteer opportunities, so even more people of all ages can get involved. This will include a four year scheme of exciting activities - including the New Theatre Royal ‘On Tour’ during the rebuild – which will increase the Theatre’s seating capacity to 695, so that West End shows can be hosted in the city. Stuart McLeod, Head of the Heritage Lottery Fund for the South East said: “This is great news for the New Theatre Royal, its volunteers and the people of Portsmouth. This wonderful historic building is one of the city’s greatest cultural and architectural assets, and now it can be developed and put to use for the benefit of the local community and beyond in understanding our fascinating theatrical heritage.”
Queen Elizabeth Country Park near Horndean has been voted 5th in the UK’s top 10 favourite parks in the annual People’s Choice Award public poll, receiving hundreds of votes from local residents and visitors. Queen Elizabeth Country Park is Hampshire’s largest park with 2,000 acres of woodland and downland.

Baby go to sleep...please!
PORTSDOWN PRIMARY SCHOOL
NURSERY
It’s the first question new mums ask – ‘‘how can I get my baby to sleep? The moment I put him down, he just howls!” We have all, at some time or other, rocked our baby to sleep, pushed them up and down the hall, put them in the pram and pounded the pavements to get them to sleep. But it doesn’t have to be like this. Here are our top tips to encourage your baby to sleep!
Establishing a bedtime routine. A routine provides babies with security and
comfort and can encourage them to sleep for longer spells. Establishing a routine can be tricky with a newborn, but try to get a loose schedule started, especially at bedtime. Your baby will be more relaxed if they know what's coming, and the more relaxed they are, the more likely they’ll fall asleep easily. Before bedtime let your baby get any pent-up energy out of their system then follow it up with a bath and lullaby and dim the light when you’re feeding. Whatever you do, do the same thing every night.
Learn the signs that your baby is tired. If they’re fussing, grizzling, crying, pulling their ears, rubbing eyes or being especially clingy, they’re probably sleepy.

Teach the difference between day and night. In the
daytime, play with your baby. Chat and sing to them, keep their room light and bright. Don't try to cut out the radio or washing machine. At night, stay quiet when you feed, keep lights and noise low and hopefully your baby will work out that night-time is for sleeping!
Give your baby a security object, blanket or stuffed animal. A great way to make teddy a favourite is keep it near
you so it becomes mum-scented. Stretch one of your t-shirts over baby’s mattress - when they startle awake the smell of mum can calm them.
Put your baby down awake. If they’ve become sleepy on the breast or bottle, rouse them slightly before putting them in their cot. How to put your baby to sleep is a matter of debate but it’s important to find the way that works for you. I suggest giving your baby a chance to fall asleep on their own. It might be OK to rock them to sleep in the middle of the day but not so much fun at 3am! If in the first few weeks your baby is allowed to fall asleep during a feed or stroked until they are asleep, they’ll soon depend on it. Teach your baby to settle itself. If your baby cries, allow them to cry for 3 minutes, then comfort them but don't pick them up. Let them cry for 5 more minutes and return again. Extend the time you wait before returning each time and your baby will learn to soothe itself and fall asleep without assistance. It’s difficult listening to your baby cry but this method does usually work, although it may take a few days.
Don’t stay by the cot. Some parents choose to stay with their child as they fall asleep but unless you want to do this forever gradually move further away. After a week you're sitting by the door and, finally, you need no longer stay. If your baby is upset, go to them and say "night, night", then go back to your place in the room. Be consistent. Whichever approach you take, it's no good
doing it one night and not bothering the next. You're not just doing it for you - 'Training' your baby to self-settle at night will have positive effects on their general outlook during waking hours. Letting your baby settle themselves gives independence, confidence and security. Remember, your child won't love you any less in the morning!

First Aid We all know that first aid can save lives and prevent minor injuries from getting worse. Accidents can and do happen and children are particularly susceptible. Over the years, first aid training has been simplified, making it easier to learn and importantly, easier to retain the knowledge and skills. Courses can be fun and engaging and lesson outlines use guidelines and materials designed by educators. Many courses are supported by video clips and manuals that serve as reference materials, but also assist in the learning process. But with so many courses on offer what training do you actually need? To be honest it depends on what you are doing. First Aid Solutions is a local company based on Highland Road in Portsmouth that offer a range of courses to suit different requirements. For parents and nannies working within the home the ‘Care for Children’ course is ideal as it covers life threatening emergencies as well as a whole range of first aid signs, symptoms and treatments. It takes one day and can make all the difference. If you are a professional child care provider responsible for children and infants in the
absence of parents then your legal and OFSTED requirements are covered by their ‘Pediatric First Aid’ course, conducted over two days. For schools, the DfEE document ‘Guidance for Schools’ provides a lengthy if somewhat vague explanation of your obligations. Provision is dependent on risk assessment, but it would be prudent to ensure that someone is always on hand during in-school and out-of-school activities with at least some basic first aid knowledge. First Aid Solutions advise that schools have a mix of training throughout their staff. This should include some staff with the 3 day ‘First Aid at Work’ training, some with Pediatric First Aid training and a good amount of staff who have completed a ‘First Aid for Schools’ program, a half day introduction to emergency care for youngsters and a course that ensures adequate cover at all times.

Why Can’t We Love Our Bodies? by Abi Foss
D
o you ever look at yourself in the mirror naked? What do you say to yourself about what you see? Do you judge your body as too fat, too wobbly, too thin, too stretch-marked, too old, too out of proportion? Do you despair about your dimpled thighs, loathe your jelly belly?
Holy Mother! Many, many moons ago, aging mothers’ bodies were not just appreciated for their great contribution to the human race, they were considered to be sacred. Think of that! Droopy breasts, sagging bellies and saddle-bag thighs bringing people to their knees in reverence. Women’s bodies, with all their lumps and bumps, were considered divine for the simple fact that they created life. I believe we are still suffering the after effects of several thousand years of patriarchal religious denunciation of the body, specifically women’s bodies, as sinful and dirty. And now we have images of models who barely eat and ruthless commercialism to contend with. We don’t love our bodies because our prevailing culture doesn’t value them, exactly as they are.
Now, how would you feel if someone looked you up and down, shook their head, tut-tutted and pointed out every supposed bodily ‘flaw’ that they could see? You’d probably tell them (or at least want to tell them) to shove their opinions up a certain part of their anatomy. That kind of talk, quite frankly, is insulting. How sad then, that we cannot delight in our bodies, whatever shape they are, these bodies that have produced our gorgeous (well, most of the time) kids. Why are we women so self-critical?
Reality Check And there lies the key: value and self-acceptance. “How do I know this body is the perfect one for me?” the spiritual teacher Byron Katie once asked. “Because this is the one I have got! Why argue with reality?”
Mirror Anxiety According to an early 2011 study commissioned by the online fashion retailer isme.com, 90 per cent of women over forty are so unhappy with what they see in the mirror, they suffer from what researchers have dubbed ‘mid-life mirror angst syndrome’. I would bet this affects a large proportion of the under forties too. As a forty-something myself, it pains me to remember how little appreciation I had for my youthful, slender body with my then (perfectly normal), slightly rounded belly. The one time I truly loved my belly was when I was pregnant; I felt almost regal, gliding around like a stately galleon. However, I have the kind of dry, sensitive skin that stretch-marks no matter how many expensive oils I lavish upon it. These days, I have a post-pregnancy mummy tummy, which I could, I suppose, flatten down with vicious dieting and a punishing exercise regime. But, you know what? I really cannot be
“And there lies the key: value and self-acceptance. How do I know this body is the perfect one for me? Because this is the one I have got! Why argue with reality?”
bothered. I mean, who would I be doing it for? To make me more presentable to others, so that they would like me more? To stop myself being self-critical? That would continue anyway – there will always be something about me, physical or otherwise, that is imperfect.
Perfectly Imperfect Because here’s the thing: perfection does not exist. Never has. Never will. Celebrities who have whole entourages on hand to groom them within an inch of their glamourous lives, still feel as insecure as the rest of us. Our whole Western culture, sadly, lives on a fastfood diet of digitally enhanced images of impossibly thin young women with flawless skin. We worship at the fountain of youth and poke fun at frail ‘old codgers’, studiously ignoring the fact that every single one of us will, at some point, age, wither and die. This strange state of denial is what drives the whole, multi-billion pound cosmetic industry.
When I look in the mirror these days, I consciously practice not arguing with reality. I am aging. Fact. And I have realised that aged faces with deep, wrinkled ‘laugher lines’ are far more endearing than airbrushed, soulless mannequin types. It is the kindness that emanates from people that makes them beautiful; like the grandmother who is always there with a warm cuddle and a bowl of soup just when you need it. Somehow, I do not think that on my deathbed I will wish I had got myself a tummy tuck or Botoxed my forehead. If anything, I will wish I had loved my body more, and respected it as the incredibly intelligent, sophisticated, miraculous temporary space suit that it is. Christmas Do’s & Don’ts! don’t
do
expect the kids to be angels
get out and about
They’ve broken up from school about to burst with excitement about the arrival of Santa. You’ve been using the ‘if you’re not good, Santa won’t come’ since Easter and then the presents are opened and your little angels turn into little devils. Rules and routine are thrown out of the window so relatives can be entertained and trips can be taken. Combine that with too many treats and lots of attention from well meaning visitors and the magic of Christmas can disappear pretty quickly. Try not to let all discipline go out of the window and if you sense that there’s a tantrum on the way, remove your child from the mayhem. During their time out, remind them that Santa can take gifts back from children who don’t behave!
You are not under house arrest over the festive period. We shouldn’t be surprised that if you fill your home with relatives you rarely see and then lock the door, there will be arguments. Add some wine and the results are anything but festive. Don’t be afraid of getting wrapped up and heading out for a bracing walk. It will clear the house and let the little ones run off some steam.
do
make your own traditions Every family has it’s own way of celebrating. Now you have your own children it’s time for you to make your own traditions. Whether it’s a trip to the local crib service on Christmas Eve, or a day of Christmas baking on the Sunday before the festivities begin, it’s up to YOU to create your traditions. A great idea I’ve taken from a friend is the Christmas Eve hamper. This is a basket, left by one of Santa’s helpers, filled with goodies to enjoy on the night before Christmas. In it are things like festive pyjamas for the children, new tooth brushes, a mug to make hot chocolate and a DVD for the family to watch. It’s the perfect kit to help kick start Christmas.
don’t
waste money Let’s face it, this is going to be a tough year for all of us. We want to give our children everything on their list, but won’t be able to. Most of us will be celebrating making it to the 25th December with a job and a roof over our heads. However, you can still enjoy the festivities while being frugal. Swop traditional cards for an email including a festive photo, Organise a secret Santa for adult family members with a spending limit. Or simply suggest that you only buy for the family’s children. Keep reminding yourself that it’s not about the money your spend on each other, it’s about the time you spend with each other.
do
give out jobs A resentful host is not a happy host so when you do your pre-Christmas shopping list, make sure you also write a list of jobs you’ll need doing on the big day. If you know your Mother-in-Law has a view about your Yorkshire Puddings, set her to work making some better ones. Remember, a busy cook is often a quiet cook!
don’t
expect perfection
do
enjoy the preparation If you’re not careful, baking the cake, decorating the house and dressing the tree can begin to feel like a chore. Don’t let it become hard work. Give yourself the time to enjoy it and accept that with a little help from your little ones you can create some lovely Christmas memories.
do
try and relax By the time Christmas Day arrives, most of us are exhausted. You’ve probably spent the weeks prior to the big day panic shopping, baking everything that Jamie suggested in his Christmas special and ferrying the family from one festive event to the next. Earmark some time for you. It’s supposed to be a holiday
don’t
forget to have a
Happy Christmas!
10 Families Solent East November/December 2011
Like it or not, your Christmas will not be perfect. You will over cook the turkey, under cook the pudding and end up sobbing into a huge glass of Sauvignon Blanc because your Mother-in-Law has criticized your gravy. But because you’ve put so much time and effort into hosting the perfect Christmas, the disappointment at the odd hiccup is overwhelming. Start the festive period accepting you’re not Nigella and it won’t be perfect and you’ll enjoy the parts that go well.
don’t
stress about the presents
So you haven’t been able to find the latest Transformer or bag a Buzz Lightyear doll. Before you beat yourself, ask yourself this. Do you remember the presents you didn’t get when you were a child? Or do you remember the experiences you had.? My memories are the treasure hunts my parents put on for Christmas morning, preparing lunch with my wonderful Mum, and covering my Dad in tinsle once he had fallen asleep after lunch! Your kids will remember the laughter and the love and when you wake up in January, so will you.
