The first families magazines in London are celebrating 20 successful years of publishing, so we know we can rely on their expertise and www.emmagra yphotography.c o.uk experience as well as bringing our own local knowledge and highlighting all the exciting events, clubs and classes in the local area. As mums with young children we both know how difficult it can be to find information of what’s going on and often you find out about a really good family day out or show after the event. Well this magazine is designed to take the stress out of finding information. We also hope you will find the articles, book reviews and news and reviews helpful and interesting. If you have any feedback we would be delighted to hear so please email us on editor@familiescentralscotland. co.uk If you have any event you would like us to include in the ‘Out and About’ section’ please let us know and we will do our best to include this.

Christmas at Stirling Castle There’s a cracking Christmas line up at Stirling Castle including a shopping fayre, carol concert and costumed performances for all the family. The fun starts on 1st December with our second annual shopping fayre which takes place in the Great Hall, where there will be lots to buy plus inspiring gift ideas. This year the castle welcomes Hamleys Glasgow toy shop to the event – where they will be giving away special discount vouchers. There will also be the chance to meet the writers and illustrators behind the Broons and get a specially-signed annual. Each weekend from 4 to 19 December there will be family entertainment with a historic theme.

traditional carols, inspiring readings and beautiful music and there will also be an opportunity for people to light a candle in memory of their loved one. Anyone interested in more information should contact Caroline on 07948 562321 or mail@forthvalleysands.org.uk

Events include our Christmas Castle Celebrations where children can learn about festivities in centuries gone by and make their own decorations. Then there’s the chance to discover what the royal court would have eaten in the days before roast turkey ruled the Christmas roost, and a look at the fashions and rituals that would have been at the heart of the festivities. There will also be a fun and cheeky look at celebrations from pagan times to the 1980s. The weekend events are included in the standard ticket price, adding a whole extra dimension to a day at the castle. Rounding everything off is our everpopular candlelit evening carol concert in the magical surroundings of the Great Hall – with storytelling from costumed performers. Tickets for this event are £12 or £9 for concessions and Historic Scotland members. For more information visit the Stirling Castle website at www.stirlingcastle.gov.uk/.

Families Magazines proud to be 20 years old Today Families Central Scotland is part of a thriving group of franchised magazines across the UK from the Solent to Fife, but twenty years ago it was a much smaller operation. The first issue in October 1990 was a cut and paste affair in black and white—meaning scissors and glue, not copy and paste!!

experts said, “it would never work in publishing,” Families started franchising the magazine in 1995. There are now 30 editions of Families in the UK, 4 of which are in Scotland and well over 500,000 copies are printed across the group.

The very first edition, Families® South West, had a mere 4,000 print run, and colour wasn’t to be seen until Oct 2000. How things have changed—it would be unthinkable nowadays to have a Families magazine in black & white. Even when the

But throughout it all, Families has remained true to the original thinking, a handson magazine for busy mums with useful information, centred around the local community. We think (well of course we would) that Families is, and always will be, the best source of local information, news, events

We’re dreaming of a ‘Green’ Christmas! It is estimated that around 40 million toys are discarded annually. Many of these toys are not biodegradable and remain in landfill, polluting our environment, for years to come. And it’s not just toys. When we add all the discarded prams, cots, clothes and books etc, we find ourselves with a very big problem. However, many of these items could still be enjoyed by someone else and Good Green Fun, a not-for-profit community reuse project based in central Stirling, allows that to happen. Its aims are to provide a low cost source of high quality, second hand children’s items to local families, whilst reducing waste in the Forth Valley area. Christmas is an expensive, and wasteful, time of year. We all want to make Christmas special, but that doesn’t have to mean breaking the bank! Many items at Good Green Fun are brand new or almost new, but retail at a fraction of the price on the high street. It’s an ideal way to buy stocking fillers at least and by buying second hand, not only will you help the environment but

Former Dunblane Teacher Launches Leading Tutoring Franchise Scotland’s leading tutoring company has launched its first franchise in the Forth Valley area. Former Newton Primary teacher Gail Fotheringham has launched Step Ahead Forth Valley, offering the company’s high standard of one-to-one tutoring services to families and individuals throughout Clackmannanshire, Falkirk and Stirling. The move marks the start of the expansion of Step Ahead Tutoring, which has provided services in Fife and Edinburgh for more than a decade. Alloa based Gail has been a primary teacher for 18 years, and also worked as a tutor and history tour guide since 2005. Having said a fond farewell to school life, Gail is now preparing to devote

herself to developing tutoring in the area, which she says brings immeasurable rewards to pupils and tutors alike. She said “.. With individual, expert tuition, pupils can flourish academically, increase in confidence and really enjoy the journey of learning.” Step Ahead Forth Valley will offer tutoring in a wide range of academic subjects from specialist tutors, as well as basic literacy and numeracy. The company, which provides expertise in independent school entry, has also successfully supported adults with professional exams. The launch of Step Ahead Forth Valley marks a successful first milestone for the company, which plans to ultimately expand throughout Scotland. Local Boy Becomes Board GameDesigner You may have seen Scott in the press or on TV recently in articles about his board game invention, Animal Advent-ure™. Scott designed the game in December 2008 (aged 7), whilst he was off school ill using an old chocolate advent calendar and affixing a painting he’d done of a pirate treasure map adventure hunt. He cut out the openings where the chocolates had once been and filled the caverns with leftovers from Halloween such as jelly snakes, chocolate eyeballs and plastic skeletons. Over the months that followed Scott designed several other themes for the game such as a Mothers Day, Valentine’s Day and an Easter Egg Hunt version; the rest, as they say, is history. In September 2009 Scott was nominated for and was a finalist in The John Logie Baird Young Innovator of the Year Award where he was the youngest ever entrant. In an effort to ‘give something back’ Scott has offered to sell his games through PTA’s within schools to help raise funds for individual schools and to run a game design competition, sponsored by his business, Special Gifts Limited in Tillicoultry, with the winner obtaining funds for the school they attend. he shortlist for this year’s Royal Mail Awards for Scottish Children’s Books were announced on Thursday 9 September.

Scotland’s largest children’s book award, the Royal Mail Awards recognise excellence in Scottish writing and illustration for children across three age categories: Bookbug Readers (0-7 years), Younger Readers (8-11 years) and Older Readers (12-16 years), with the winners decided by Scottish children themselves, who will be reading and voting for their favourite books of the year. The winners will be announced at a special award ceremony at Tramway in Glasgow on 22 February 2011.

Jasmine Fassl, Acting Children’s Programme Manager at Scottish Book Trust said “Scottish Book Trust is really pleased to announce the shortlist for this year’s Royal Mail Awards. The panel had a really tough time choosing from all the excellent books published in Scotland and has come up with a varied and brilliant shortlist in three categories. I am sure children all over Scotland will enjoy reading the shortlisted books.” So far, over 22,000 children in 300 Scottish schools and libraries have already registered to vote. In 2009, 30,000 children ended up taking part and with registration open until 28 January 2011, this year’s awards are likely to be the biggest ever in terms of children participating!

The 2010 Shortlist Consists Of: Bookbug Readers (0-7 years)

n the 9th September we eagerly awaited the announcement of the short listed books for the Royal Mail Book Awards for Scottish Children’s Books. The wonderful thing about these awards is that the winning books are decided entirely by children and young people in schools and in libraries across Scotland, as they read and vote for their favourite books. The reading has started now and the deadline for voting, using the online voting form at www.scottishbooktrust. com is Friday 28th January 2011. In general, the Awards offer an excellent opportunity for families to look out for great books to read and all the short listed books are available in the public libraries. If you haven’t visited your library

Julie Morrison, Head of External Relations for Royal Mail Group, said: “Royal Mail is delighted to again be sponsoring the Children’s Book Awards. We are particularly pleased with the enthusiastic response of children, parents and teachers across Scotland to these awards.”

he nights have drawn in, there’s a magical feel to the chill in the air and there’s more than one kind of wrapping-up on everyone’s mind. It can only mean one thing... Christmas is on its way! Whether that fills you with ho, ho, ho’s or Scrooge-like groans, we hope this fun-filled guide to all things festive, will help make this year a Christmas to remember...

It’s the thought that counts... Recent economic difficulties have triggered a new dawn of consumerism. Many of us are now concentrating on quality purchases that will stand the test of time. Nostalgia has unveiled tradition as the new vogue and whilst the latest crazes and popular characters certainly have their place, children are arguably more demanding and harder to please than ever before. There’s a reason why some of the old favourites are resurfacing and proving their worth to a new generation of inquisitive minds. Children like to be entertained but they thrive on interaction, they will happily watch but they learn quicker from doing, they benefit from competition but they enjoy team work. Classic toys are all this and much more and they really do have timeless appeal. With that in mind this year, why not focus on something they will love this Christmas but will treasure for many more to come...

Top 10 Toys for Christmas 2010! We know a thing or two about toys but if you want guaranteed smiles or favourite aunt/ uncle status, you can’t go wrong tracking down something from this list. Be warned though, these toys are set to fly from the shelves quicker than Santa’s sleigh, so don’t miss out!

A Hamleys tale... Stuck on the basics or searching for finishing touches? Take inspiration from the world’s most famous toy store this year. Hamleys was established by Cornishman, William Hamley, in London, in 1760. Today it remains the world’s most wonderful toy shop, synonymous with theatre, magic and entertainment; add a mince pie or two and you’ve got all the ingredients for a perfect Christmas!

Baby’s first Christmas Latest additions may be slightly oblivious to the seasonal chaos but you’ll remember their first Christmas forever and will be keen to make it extra special. Nothing says ‘I love you’ like a keepsake or something they can cherish for years to come. My First Dolly £19 My First Dolly will be loved by all. She is so squeezably soft that little arms will adore snuggling up to her. Dressed

Alphabet Blocks £17 Painted with bright colours, clear letters and imaginative illustrations these wooden blocks can help little children when learning letters, colours and much more besides.

T is for trouble and toddlers! Busy little hands are into all things naughty as well as nice, so classic toys should be at the top of the list. The educational benefits and development of imagination and play skills from these toys are extensive but cleverly masked behind the colour, fun and excitement that toddlers crave. Teaching Clock £14 Hamleys colourful Fun to Learn Teaching Clock helps teach time, number and letter recognition, as well as developing motor and problem solving skills through play. (made from fsc wood) Wooden London Bus £32.50 The wheels on the bus go round and round! The top of this traditional big red bus opens to reveal 24 little wooden passengers and one cheerful driver. Great for developing hand to eye co-ordination. (made from fsc wood)

parent to parent Favourite children’s club/class: It has to be my classes LazyTown and FitKid –The classes were launched a year ago in Stirling for children age 18 months plus and have gone from strength to strength. We also run summer classes and will be launching throughout Scotland later on in the year. I also love going to gymnastics.

andy lives with husband Robin and two kids Michael aged 7 and Kim aged 5 in Stirling. Mandy is a qualified fitness instructor, CYQ in children’s fitness and the Official UK LazyTown trainer. As the manager of Fit Kid Lazy Town Sports club in Scotland she also organises local classes for nursery and primary age children. These are the official classes based on the International hit TV show LazyTown. Mandy loves her job encouraging kids to get active whilst having fun at the same time. Since launching over a year ago the classes are now in over 7 private nurseries in the area, 5 community centres and Gleneagles Hotel, also offering parties in partnership with the MacRobert centre. FitKid classes for older children have also recently launched. To find out more about classes in your area go to www.fitkid.co.uk or email mandy@fitkid. co.uk

Why you like living where you do? Stirling is central for travel to Edinburgh and Glasgow. We are near the hills and have a great park near by. The area feels safe and school is 1 min walk away. Favourite shop Waterstones as I love books but I also like browsing around the 2nd hand book shops. I like Crema Coffee shop as they have the best coffee around! Favourite park Riverside park ( in Stirling) – It is very close to our house and is set in a beautiful location by the river and with a view of the Wallace Monument. There is lots for the kids to play on (and lots of fun for adults too!)

Biggest waste of money petrol! I often cry at the petrol pump! I can’t believe how expensive it is now.

Favourite day out I love walking up Dumyat with the family. We all love going to the beach at St Andrews, collecting shells, running by the sea and exploring the coast. Sometimes we will stop off for Go Karting on the way home at the Indoor karting centre. I have a pilots licence so a day at Perth airport always a favourite day out! Favourite child friendly restaurant Birds and the Bees, in Stirling. The staff are very friendly. We like going ot the Allanwater cafe. They do the best baked potatoes around. The staff are friendly and of course on a hot day you can’t beat the occasional ice cream. As it is next to the river we sometimes go for a walk afterwards. Proudest eco-friendly moment We grow our own veg and this year we have grown a crop of potatoes and carrots and even some broccoli. Its great for the kids to grow their own veg and then cook them. No parent should be without Coffee! I always buy Touche Eclait for friends when they have kids - at least you can pretend you have had some sleep then! Parenting pet hates I hate junk food advertising –in particular breakfast cereals that are full of sugar and salt yet pretend to be healthy!! Also fizzy drinks - I think the companies that promote these to children have a lot to answer to! Most embarrassing moment Asking my boss “Sportacus” Magnus Scheving for a high 5 in a meeting and missing. Favourite family holiday spot Paris is a beautiful city, we loved people watching and all the bakeries. With the business being so busy we haven’t had time for a holiday for a few years but we are aiming to get to Florida next year!

Most played with toys Lego The whole household loves building with lego. My husband jokes this is why we had kids - so we can justify buying lego.

Best children’s book Anything by Roald Dahl or Dr Seuss. My son Michael also loves the Beast Quest books. My daughter Kim reads all the Katy Morag books over and over.

Labels4Kids personalised

name labels is an award winning business. Ann-Maree Morrison has years of experience in labelling and catering for 3 boys of her own, with a team of staff who are also into labelling girls clothing too and everything from horse belongings to swimming kit they have a number of tips for parents new to the business whose child may be starting school for the first time.

Top tips are: • Label EVERYTHING. Yes, from hair bands to swimming goggles. If you have it, label it. • Better still, label it TWICE if you can afford to. • Don’t go for the traditional woven label for clothing unless it is compulsory at school or you particularly love them and cannot do without them. There are many more options available these days. • Don’t rely on a marker pen that fades. Belongings are more expensive to replace if lost than the cost of labels. • ORDER EARLY. Labels4Kids has tested most labels on the market and gives honest feedback on the website about what is good and why. If you are not sure, email sales@labels4kids.com and they will advise you as well.

Best children DVD or video ET although I hate watching it as I still cry to this day!

Easy wrapping paper ideas. Hand Prints Large sheets of white paper (or a roll of lining paper cut into lengths) covered in children’s hand prints, makes wrapping paper to treasure as much as the present you are wrapping. Wrinkly paper Get the children to paint with watery paint on a sheet of paper. Cover it with cling film, scrunch the cling film up with your fingers to make lots of wrinkles and leave to dry. Peel off the film to leave a great texture. Glitterbug tip of the month. Keep a bag or box of any interesting bits and pieces. Old bits of wrapping paper, ribbons, feathers, old buttons, scraps of material, even the corrugated card outer from your Starbucks cappuccino can keep kids busy for hours.

Ally Marshall’s thoughts on Knitting

I

f you haven’t picked up a pair of knitting needles since you learnt to knit a ‘wonky’ square in primary school then you may be unaware of the revival of knitting as a thoroughly modern hobby. These days you are just as likely to find a Hollywood actor knitting in his/her trailer as you are an old lady knitting by the fireside! The Internet helps knitters to swap patterns and advice on websites such as www.ravelry.com and a beginner will find the instructional video on www.youtube. com particularly helpful.

If you are lucky enough to have a local wool shop, you should find that they stock a variety of patterns and books reflecting the latest trends as well as wool’s in a huge range of fibres and sumptuous colours from luxurious cashmere to practical machine washable wool. Many shops also organise knitting and craft demonstrations and even organise social events where you can find new friends as you learn a new skill. The novice knitter would be wise to start with a small

project such as a bag or scarf, also a great introduction to the world of needlecraft for your child. Choose an extra thick yarn and large needles and everyone will be admiring your handiwork in no time. Toymaking with Children by Freya Jaffke is a delightful book filled with ideas for making a wide variety of toys to help children’s developing skills, creativity and imagination at different ages. There are loads of different projects ranging from simple to more advanced using wool and other easily soured natural materials.

Did you know there is a knitting group that meet at Falkirk library on alternate Mondays from 6.30. Phone Falkirk Library on 01324 503606 for details. All are welcome. The Tollbooth in Stirling has a knitting group that meets every Tuesday from 5.30-7.30. Everyone welcome, just bring a £1 and your own needles. Phone Emma Hamilton on 01786 274010 for more details.

green page neighbours to work together to see how much carbon their street can save by exploring achievable ideas such as the bulk buying of renewable energy, creation of food co-ops, tool sharing schemes and perhaps even setting up a car sharing club.

FAMILIES in King’s Park and Balfron will be the first in the Stirling area to attempt the Big Street Challenge. It’s the initial activity to come from the Low Carbon Stirling campaign organised in a unique partnership between Going Carbon Neutral Stirling (GCNS) and Stirling Council. The project challenges

“Streets across the country are coming together to work on practical and obtainable solutions to some of the challenges presented by climate change and peak resources and we hope Stirling residents will embrace this challenge” said Simon Gooden of GCNS. Along with saving carbon there are a number of other benefits including increased wellbeing, creating a stronger community as well as potentially saving money

through increased energy efficiency. Participating householders will receive energy-saving free gifts, a fruit tree, an energy meter and home surveys with thermal imaging. For more information, or if you would like your street to get involved , contact Simon Gooden of GCNS on  01786 468762 or email simon. gooden@ksbscotland.org.uk. LOW CARBON STI

• Plan your food shopping. Think in terms of meals make a list, and stick to it. This will reduce food waste, not only helping the environment but saving the average household up to £430 a year (see www. wasteawarelovefood.org.uk for further information). • Buy local, seasonal produce. For instance, visit a farmers’ market and treat you and yours to quality rather than quantity. • Composting food peelings, either at home, or via your food caddy or brown bin will reduce our need for landfill. See www. forthenvironmentlink.org for information on compost bins.

• Gifts do not have to cost the earth. Reuse or ‘regift’ unwanted toys, games, CDs, clothes and books. Visit local charity and recycling shops such as Good Green Fun in Springkerse, Stirling. • Use old Christmas cards as tags. Use recycled wrapping paper and ribbon or string to wrap your gifts. • Conserve energy by turning down the heating, especially when you have a full house and a full stomach. • Fairy lights look pretty but switch them off when no one’s around to enjoy them! At least 15% of household electricity is lost by leaving items plugged in or on standby. • Buy a natural Christmas tree, either in a pot to be reused again and again, or one grown sustainably which can be recycled in your garden or through the council; check out their website for details. • Bake Christmas biscuits to hang on your tree or decorate with traditional, natural materials such as holly and pinecones. These can be composted once the festivities are over. We hope these ideas help you have a healthy, happy and sustainable Christmas. Time and goodwill are the most valuable gifts we can give to those around us and surely best for the planet we all share. LOW CARBON CHRISTMAS Reduce, Reuse, Recycle…Regift! It might not have been the perfect gift for you but the scarf you were given last Christmas, and which has lurked in the drawer ever since, might just be the perfect gift for someone else. Stirling residents are being urged to re-gift their unloved and unwanted presents to a number of local charity shops and second hand retailers who are participating in a Low Carbon Christmas campaign run by Going Carbon Neutral Stirling. The campaign kicks off in November and aims to show people there is an alternative to buying new all the time. Re-gifting has seen a boom in recent years as more and more people see it making economic and environmental sense. So if you are shopping in Stirling this Christmas keep an eye out for the green footprints which will direct you to the participating retailers and who knows you might just find the perfect gift for someone you love.
