Walk to School October 2012

Take the Right Route is an initiative to help reduce congestion, improve levels of health and fitness and improve our local environment throughout the Falkirk Council area.

The Walk to School campaign in Falkirk Council was first launched in 2005. Over the years the campaign has grown in success with 46 schools and nurseries now taking part in Walk to School days, weeks and months. Schools are also engaged in a number of other walk to school activities such as: • Walk Once a Week campaigns • Walking Buses • Pedometer challenges

News from NCT Central Scotland

NCT Central Scotland has been busy in the last few months. Our Easter Egg Hunt was very successful. And we have the popular Nearly New Sale coming up on the 13th October and our Halloween Party on the 31st October – both in the Bridge of Allan Parish Church. Our Baby Cafe has been very busy providing breastfeeding support to local families. We soon hope to start a Peer Support Programme, to allow us to extend the support we offer, and are looking for Mums who have breastfed and are interested in doing the course. We are also hoping to start a Bumps and Babies Group which will be a group for Mums to meet up and socialise. It is predominantly aimed at mums of children 0-2 years. Choosing after-school activities

A

s the new school year starts, so does the time to choose after-school activities, but take a quick look and you will find a whole range of classes available, from Scouts to Ballet, from French to Karate. How can we know which ones are the best for our child, offer value for money, and critically, which ones they will enjoy!

After-school activities definitely offer value to your children. Reports indicate those who participate in after-school programs have better school attendance, higher grades and loftier aspirations. They’re less likely to get into trouble and are at lower risk of obesity.

It is also a great opportunity for children to develop social and leadership skills. The benefits are there, but under which classes?

Talk to your child and find out how they feel about the activity, and let them choose at least one club or activity themselves. Help them choose activities that reflect who they are and what they want to learn, don’t impose your preferences. Explain that it’s

important and fun to try new things, and remember switching activities is normal amongst children.

Always check out the quality of an activity.

Discipline-based activities that create a

Clubs and Classes quality product over a period of time are great, e.g. putting on a play. Don’t think that high cost equal high quality, some activities are cheaper to run like football. Staff members should be professionals with skills and experience.

Consider the mix of activities. The benefits of exercise are huge, so including a sport would be a good start.

Extracurricular activities are ideal for children to explore and practice what it means to be a group leader, e.g. Brownies. If you are stuck between two similar activities, consider the usefulness, e.g. drum lessons might be cool, but the guitar might have wider applicability.

Finally, remember logistics. The afterschool programme affects you too. Avoid signing on to too many activities that leave you scrambling from one to the next. No one will have fun doing anything if it means arriving late, leaving early, and going without dinner on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Look hard for places you can walk to, it reduces your carbon footprint while keeping you fit for free! Finally do build in some downtime.

Children need to have independent play as well as the structured activities, so ensure time is built in for dinner, watching T.V. and relaxing. Leave some activities perhaps for the summer, when different interests can be tried, without the pressure of school demands.

After-school activities can provide enrichment, adventure and variety. They can enhance knowledge and build character.

Spend a bit more time choosing the right activity programme for your child and you will reap the benefits.

Consideration for special needs children • Consider your child’s interests, rather than their needs. Many regular activities can use technology or planning to help their participation, e.g. drama, athletics, cooking, academic. Evaluate your child’s stamina. Check they have the energy for an extracurricular activity?

• Talk with the activity leaders about your child’s unique medical and communication needs. Provide them with emergency contact information.

• Make sure family downtime is a regular part of the schedule. Sometimes your family needs to have nothing to do as a group.

Remember the inclusion of children with special needs is beneficial to all. Special needs children achieve more, improve behaviour, and enhance motivation. Children without special needs learn from working cooperatively and grow in confidence through helping others.

Wallacestone is a quiet, peaceful neighbourhood near Falkirk. We have a large garden where we love to grow herbs and vegetables.

Funniest comment your kids have ever made As an author I really should write the funny ones down but I’m usually too busy laughing. One of the most philosophical comments came from Charley last week.

I was complaining to her that I couldn’t get a song out of my head, to which she replied “Dad, you should always have a song in your head.”

Best planet saving tip Recycle everything. We do not have an infinite supply of anything on the planet so everything has to be used again and again.

Favourite park Has to be Callendar Park, fantastic space.

No parent should be without Children with good manners. It is one of my greatest pleasures to take my daughters anywhere. They’re polite, kind and thoughtful and I often cringe when I see the behaviour of some children, and often their parents when we’re out and about. Manners cost nothing and last a lifetime.

Favourite children’s club/class Jess is currently going for her black belt with the Falkirk Tae-Kwon-Do club at the Mariner Centre. Charley is our little gymnast at the club at Grangemouth Stadium.

Parenting pet hates I hate having to tell the girls to tidy up after themselves but it’s absolutely necessary. It’s usually their bedrooms but it can be scary going into the bathroom in the morning after the girls have been in.

Favourite day out This is a family tradition now. Jumping on the train on a Saturday morning in August and going through to the Edinburgh Festival, taking in a show or two, watching the street entertainment, maybe a quick visit to Chambers St Museum and picnic in Princes St Gardens if the weather’s good. If not, it’s pizza time!

Most embarrassing moment That would have to be me, aged 44 going on 8. I was heading to the corner shop with Charley on our scooters. I bounced down off the pavement, crossed the road and tried to jump the kerb on the other side, thinking my stunt work was pretty cool.

Favourite shop We’re a family of avid readers so our favourite shops would have to be Lit-list Book Shop in Falkirk and Waterstones.

Favourite child friendly restaurant My girls love a fantastic variety of foods.

La Banca is a favourite at the moment, our local the Craiglee Inn does the best steak pie EVER!

Kids love yucky humour but are often forced to read what adults think they should be reading, rather than what they’d enjoy themselves. For me, just helping children develop a love for reading is the most important thing.

have to admit I do enjoy Halloween. We decorate the house with pumpkin lanterns and a few spooky items and then all get dressed up! It’s fun inviting a few friends round to play some games and then to go out guising and perform our ‘wee turn’! We always pre-warn those we will visit and they are only people we know, which is important at Halloween as not everyone wants a knock at the door! Wrap the mummy – Buy lots of cheap toilet roll and split into teams. Allocate one person from each team to be the mummy, the others in the team are the mummy wrappers. Give a time limit to cover the mummy from head to toe in toilet roll – the team with the best wrapped mummy are the winners(or the team that make you laugh the most - this is a hoot for the players and the audience!)

Taste-tastic – Prepare a large plate with tiny tastes of 10 edible items (jam, marmite, toothpaste, tomato ketchup….) Then number each item. One person is blindfolded and they have to say a number between 1 and 10. Put

Autumn Adventures at The National Wallace Monument School holidays are the ideal time to enjoy Stirling’s heritage - and a great place to start is the city’s famous National Wallace Monument. Even before arriving at the Monument itself, there are woodland walks and trails - with magnificent views - to follow on the Abbey Craig, the rock on which the Monument stands.

This Autumn, Edinburgh Zoo is delighted to announce it will be launching its second pre-school events schedule. Following on from the huge success of the initial series, Edinburgh Zoo will be hosting a range of fantastic activities and workshops aimed at youngsters aged 6 months to 5 years from mid-September until the end of November.

From arts and crafts to music and dance, there will be plenty to keep your little ones entertained. October will also see the launch of this year’s “Creepy Crawlies” event – if your kids are a fan of bugs and beasties, this is an event not to be missed!

Once inside - there are galleries displaying Sir William Wallace’s famous battlesword and re-telling the story of his life. Continuing upwards towards the Crown - where the views are even more spectacular! - there is the Hall of Heroes to visit; here the achievements of other famous Scottish figures are recognised.

There is also a fantastic series of daily animal talks for visitors to enjoy featuring our sun bears, rhinos and brilliant birds amongst others. And if it weather gets a bit chilly as you wander around exploring the Zoo, pop into one of our great catering outlets for a hot snack or a nice cuppa to warm you up.

Special activities from 15th to 26th October 2012 will see costumed actors telling the story of Wallace and his victory at The Battle of Stirling Bridge, and there will be challenges for younger visitors to take on with special games and quizzes, including a hunt for William Bear!
