Children’s Drinks ‘Too Sugary’ – campaigners calling for less sugar in drinks aimed at children
Breastfeed if you can, but formula just as good, says Adele Chart-topping singing sensation and mum of one Adele has told an audience of concert-goers at the 02 that the pressure on new mums to breastfeed is, ‘f***ing ridiculous.’ Asked by an audience member whether she had breastfed her son Angelo, 3, the singer replied, ‘It’s hard! Some of us can’t do it! I managed about nine weeks with my boobs, some of my mates got postnatal depression from the way those midwives were talking. Breastfeed if you can, but don’t worry – Aptamil (formula milk) is just as good. I mean, I loved it, all I wanted to do was breastfeed, and then I couldn’t.’ Adele’s comments come hot on the heels of Jamie Oliver’s tweet that, ‘Breastfeeding is easy.’ The TV chef was forced to clarify his position after criticism online, and later said, ‘I understand that breastfeeding is often not easy and in some cases not even possible. But just wanted to support women who DO want to breastfeed and make it easier for them to do so.’

Campaigners from the University of Liverpool and Action on Sugar are calling for the levels of sugar in children’s drinks to be lowered, as they have found that some smoothies contained an average of five teaspoons of sugar per serving. The study was published in the journal BMJ Open and the researchers have said that although the drinks contain fruit, they should no longer be considered one of kids’ five-a-day, as the sugar content is close to the daily limit suggested for a young child. Current advice is that one glass of juice or one smoothie of 150ml counts as one of the five fruit and vegetables per day. However, they are also advised that children between the ages of four and six should have less than 19g of sugar per day from all their food and drinks. This is about five teaspoons, so if they are getting it from just one drink, the likelihood is that they will exceed this by taking on sugar from other sources. Drinks marketed for children’s lunchboxes sold at supermarkets around the country were analysed and the researchers found that the free sugar content ranged from zero to 16g per 100ml. This broke down to an average of one teaspoon of sugar in fruit drinks, two teaspoons in fruit juices and three in smoothies. Free sugar is that found in honey, syrup and juice as well as that put in by the drink’s manufacturers. It does not include the natural sugar found in whole fruit. However, some health professionals say that, as it can be difficult to get children to eat fruit, smoothies are still useful in the diet as long as they are limited and drank with meals to protect the child’s teeth. They contain minerals, vitamins and also fibre from the whole fruit, which is beneficial to the diets of children. Products called ‘juice drink’ may be high in sugar and contain no fibre, so should be avoided.

Take it Outside! Now that the warmer weather is on its way, everyone is itching to get outside. Jubilee Day Nursery and Jubilee Gems in Padworth have a highly regarded reputation for outdoor learning all year round and the benefits of outdoor play as a child can have positive and farreaching effects into adulthood. Senior Nursery Manager Lesley Thomson says, ‘If we think back to our own childhoods, some of our fondest memories are of playing outdoors but in recent years there has been a cultural shift in society that has led to a reduction in access to the outdoors for many young children. Our ethos at Jubilee is ‘learning by doing’ – both inside and out, every day. We believe it’s essential that children explore, learn and play safely and freely.’ Free and unstructured play is incredibly important for problemsolving, self-discipline and focus. Being in nature (not just learning about it) can have dramatic effects on mental well-being and self-esteem. Fresh air and fun really does make one feel happier and healthier! www.jubileedaynursery.co.uk

Education News Waverley celebrates World Book Day with opening of new school library Witches, foxes, caterpillars and even Oompa Loompa’s from Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory visited Waverley School in Wokingham on World Book Day to celebrate the opening of the new library at the school. In fact, it was the Waverley pupils themselves, dressed up in costumes of their favourite book characters. From the very youngest children in the nursery, to the older children in the Prep School, everyone at the school joined in. Even the Head was unrecognisable as the Fantastic Mr. Fox! World Book Day was chosen by Waverley School in Finchampstead, a Times Top 100 Prep School, as the perfect day to celebrate the
opening of their new school library with the children. The library is now a vibrant, welcoming place with bright colours, wall displays and plenty of fun, comfortable
seating. The latest fingerprint technology has also been installed enabling all children, whatever their age, to borrow books and make full use of the facilities.
Guy Shore, the Headmaster at Waverley, enthused, ‘World Book Day really brought books to life as the children came to school dressed as characters from so many different favourite children’s stories such as Roald Dahl and Julia Donaldson. We had a wonderful array of costumes and I am extremely proud of both the children and their parents for putting in such an enormous effort. I am particularly delighted that we now have the new library facility for the children, which gives them an amazing space to relax, enjoy and explore books. World Book Day was the perfect day to show to our pupils how important, but also how fun, reading can be.’
Introducing The Whitty Theatre at Luckley After over a year of construction, Luckley House School has have finally taken control of their brand-new Performing Arts Centre: The Whitty Theatre, named after Mary Whitty, a committed Christian and the grandmother of the major donor who has made construction of this building possible. The Whitty Theatre is a flexible 178seat theatre with state-of-the-art equipment. The venue has excellent facilities and is available for hire by the local community for a variety of events including plays, dance, music, film, lectures and conferences. The building is packed full of stateof-the-art technology (supplied by over 100 kilometres of cable!), a considerable feat of engineering. The school have been delighted with the way the building has taken shape and are particularly impressed with
how flexible the space is. It is hoped that the new theatre will provide pupils with wonderful opportunities for years to come. The final stages over the past few weeks included the commissioning of the audio-visual systems, the installation of seating and drapes, and a series of training sessions. The grand gala opening will be a school production of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ in June. But look out for a variety of other events taking place in the Whitty Theatre as they hope to bring in a diverse range of entertainment from, and for, the local community. You can keep up to-date with news and events at www. thewhittytheatre.org and follow on Twitter at www.twitter.com/ WhittyTheatre. Here’s to the next chapter of the Arts at Luckley!

Education News What makes Reddam House special? The heart of the Reddam House philosophy is seeing each child as strong, capable and resilient; rich with wonder and knowledge. The school takes its inspiration from the work of Loris Malaguzzi, founder of the Reggio Emilia Approach. This unique view of the child is a powerful foundation for the work that goes on in the Early Learning School. Specialist teaching in music, sports, dance, drama, languages and art enrich the programme and offer children an opportunity to express themselves in different ways, developing confidence and talents. As a result, children are engaged with their learning and make outstanding progress. ways. We teach children how to think, not what to think. The central place of childinspired projects continues into the Reception (Stage 5) classroom coupled with a rigorous approach to reading, writing and numeracy. Children are in control of their own learning journey, inspiring the direction of the projects giving reading and writing a purpose, promoting a deeper understanding where connections are made across subjects. Outcomes for children are exceptionally high with children well placed for the next step in their education.

Education Making the most of School Open Days Guy Shore, Head of Waverley Preparatory School and Nursery in Finchampstead, shares his top tips if you’re planning to visit an independent school. Plan well ahead
Warm, open and honest
It’s a good idea to start looking around for schools a year before your child is due to start the following September. This will give you the chance to visit school Open Days then revisit a shortlist of your preferred school(s). For reception, you should visit when your child is 3 and for secondary schools when your child is in Year 5.
During an open day, often pupils will show you around and talk to you about their school. Feel free to ask questions to both teachers and pupils and find what they do like about their school, but also what they don’t like.
Access all areas As a potential parent, you should be able to see the reality of all aspects of the school at work. Is everything overly tidy and clinical, or are you able to look through the workbooks and explore hidden areas of the school?
Visit on a school day Some schools schedule their open days on school days and some at the weekend. Whilst weekends may be more convenient for parents, open days on school days may provide a better idea of a school’s natural working atmosphere.
Work on display Look at the children’s work on display. It should celebrate their achievements and demonstrate the value that the school places on each child’s learning journey. Check that a broad range of abilities is on display – a school should value every child.
Pupil/Teacher interaction Pay close attention to how the pupils and teachers react with each other when you walk into a classroom. Do the teachers know the child by name and engage with them? Do the children appear motivated, happy and at ease with their teachers?
Where is the money invested? A good school should focus its investment on quality teaching and improving facilities to enhance the children’s education. Look at the general fabric of the buildings – do they require a huge amount of expensive upkeep? Prospectuses should be readily available for parents to take away.
Meet the Head When you come to an open day you should meet the Head Teacher. They are responsible for the overall running of the school and give direction to teachers and children. You should hear their vision and what the school is aiming to achieve. A Head who inspires you will inspire your child.
The Nitty Gritty Do your homework – read Ofsted and ISI (Independent School Inspectorate) reports, look at SATS results and league tables. However, don’t depend entirely on reports and results. Speak to local parents, visit the local shops and look on the web for features and news about the school.
Does the school fit with your family lifestyle? Your family arrangements may have a strong influence on which school you choose. Breakfast clubs and after school clubs are nowadays vital for many working and single parent families but are not offered by all schools. If the school offers extra-curricular activities such as sports and clubs, check that there is a good variety. Individual school visits to Waverley can be arranged by emailing info@waverleyschool.co.uk or by calling 0118 973 1121

Party Special
Seven party themes kids will love By Sally J. Hall Parties can go with a swing if you choose a theme your little ones can have fun with. From fancy dress costumes to themed plates, cups and decorations, here are some great ideas for a themed children’s party.
✩ Pirates
✩ Disney
✩ Superhero
Invitations: Create a treasure map by drawing a rough map of your street and put “X marks the party spot” where your house (or the party venue) is. A suitably pirate-inspired poem would be a good addition with plenty of “aaaaaahhhhhhhs!”
Invitations: Whether your child loves Frozen, Mickey Mouse or Cars, create an invitation to your Magical Kingdom using stickers of favourite Disney characters and glitter.
Invitations: Create bright invitations in Superhero colours and write the child’s name on as a character – for example: “Dear SuperZac, please come to my Superhero party.”
Wear: Encourage kids to dress as pirates and give each a bandana or eye patch to wear as they arrive. Play: Fill a wooden chest (or cardboard box painted to look like a treasure chest) with torn up newspaper and pop in some wrapped small gifts for a lucky dip. Eat: Give them vegetable, chicken or fish fingers and let them eat with their hands like real pirates. Jelly with pomegranate seeds or blueberries in the bottom looks like sunken treasure. The table can be covered with a blue paper cloth and then scattered with shells, star fish and fake jewels. Party bags: Send them home with a treasure chest party box containing a piece of cake and a fun gift like an inflatable sword or pirate stickers.

Wear: Most kids will have a Disney costume or two lurking in the dressing up box. Say that dressing up is optional and have a few accessories that kids without costumes could wear such as paper crowns and a sash made from coloured paper. Play: Create a Disney piñata by covering a balloon with papier maché and cutting a little opening in the top to put in some treats. You could turn it into a Mickey Mouse head, a character from Cars or a simple balloon shape with some Disney characters pasted on it. Eat: Serve drinks in mismatched teacups for an Alice in Wonderland party, make cucumber sandwiches for a Princess theme and create cupcakes in Disney cupcake cases. Party bags: Disney bags will be great going-home gifts. Fill with a treat to eat and some play princess jewellery or stickers.
Wear: If your little guests don’t have costumes, why not create simple paper or felt masks and add a badge with each child’s name and their super power on them. Play: Create a super hero obstacle course in the garden. Kids have to crawl beneath ropes, through popup tunnels, in and out of boxes and over big cushions. Eat: Make some colourful cupcakes and finish them off with cake toppers with the words “Boom!” “Pow!” and “Zap!” on them. Create food and a birthday cake in your child’s favourite character’s colours. Party bags: Instead of a party bag, why not give each child a small plastic superhero toy.
MAY/JUNE 2016
Party Special ✩ Tea Party
✩ Jungle
✩ Circus
Invitations: Pretty florals and pastel colours are the key to this theme, so make invitations festooned with flowers cut from wrapping paper.
Invitations: Make animal themed invitations; these can be as simple or artistic as you like.
Invitations: Why not create an invitation that looks like a big clown’s shoe? Or even go for a circus ticket theme.
Wear: Ask the kids to dress up as if they are going for afternoon tea at a posh hotel. Girls can wear pretty dresses and boys can put on smart trousers and a shirt. Play: This theme really suits all those old-fashioned party games like Pass the Parcel and Musical Chairs. Eat: Make some dainty sandwiches with the crusts cut off, with little cakes and serve them on vintage mismatched cups and saucers. You can even buy cardboard three-tiered cake stands. Party bags: Create some unique party bags out of old floral fabric you have lying around the house and pop in some pretty fake jewellery or unique trinkets along with a piece of cake.
Wear: Encourage the kids to come dressed as their favourite animal or bring a toy with them if they don’t want to dress up. You could also make some simple animal face masks. Play: Have a safari game in the garden where you hide pictures of animals the kids have to spot, then to calm them down, play Sleeping Lions. Eat: Create your own Bush Tucker Trial; long, thin sandwiches make great ‘caterpillars’ (use little pieces of chives to create legs and sliced black olives for eyes). A bowl of pasta with pesto can be called ‘slithering snakes’ and jelly masquerades as ‘slime’. Party bags: Little bags can be filled with a piece of the cake and some jungle stickers, little rubber snakes and other animal toys.
Wear: Kids can all dress as circus folk using garments they may already have at home; ballet costumes double as acrobats, riders can wear jodhpurs and all of the kids can be clowns with some face paint. Play: Buy some clever modelling balloons and have a practice before the kids arrive. Play tumbling games and give a prize to the winner. Eat: Think of food you find served at circuses; make popcorn in the microwave and have hotdogs and burgers in buns. Party bags: In a circus theme party bag, pop some animal chocolate biscuits, balloons and a fake moustache.
✩ Football Invitations: Use white card and paint on black hexagons to make football shaped invitations. Wear: Ask the kids to come dressed for a game of football - they can wear their school PE kit if they don’t have a football shirt. Play: If you can, ask a coach from a local five aside team to come to the party to teach the kids some new skills such as keepyuppy. Round off with a friendly match. Eat: Use paper cloths in your favourite team’s colours, with matching napkins. Eat the kind of food you find at the football ground, such as burgers in buns and chips. Party bags: Inside a box or bag in England or your child’s favourite team colours, pop a plastic whistle, pencils, pads and stickers.

Party Special
Kids birthday parties on a budget Nearly half of families spend up to £500 on a child's birthday party but there are LOADS of ways to cut the cost....... When it comes to numbers, think in 8s
Make your own invitations
Most packs for parties come in multiples of 8 – so you get 8 cups, 8 invitations, 8 plates. If you invite ten children, then you probably have to spend twice as much! Invest in plastic tableware that you can use year after year, especially if you buy neutral colours – you’ll just have more washing up!
Make or print off your own personal invitations or use downloadable invites from the Early Learning Centre Birthday Club online. There are also great FREE e-invites which help you track RSVPs too. For thank you cards, printing off a picture of the children at the party is a much cheaper alternative to shop-bought cards.
Do it yourself entertainment You don’t have to pay for an entertainer. A treasure hunt in the garden, a parent dressed up running games or face painting can all be done yourself. A lot of the professionals use the Snazaroo Ultimate Party Pack kit but you could do it yourself as it has a book showing you how to create the looks and it’ll only cost you £14. Most games don’t cost a penny to play, and you can get bags of party prizes at the supermarkets for around £2 each. 1 box of sweets will be enough for everyone.
Forget the party bag tat Instead of party bags, why not do a craft activity for the entertainment? You could decorate plates, canvas bags or t-shirts and then the kids can take them home at the end. It kills two birds with one stone! Otherwise look at multipacks of books or decent toys – the other parents will love you for it!

Don’t go overboard on food and drink There is always loads of wastage at kids parties so slash the cost and provide jugs of squash instead of individual cartons and bottles and instead of making sandwiches (so much effort!) go for hot dogs with real sausages or a load of pizzas. For pudding, squeezy yoghurts and fruit are great options.
Don’t hire Mary Berry! If you don’t have the time, inclination or skill to make your own celebration cake but still want something personal, buy a plain iced celebration cake for around £5 from the supermarket and then decorate it yourself using homemade sugarcraft decorations for around £3-4 from eBay or buy cheap cake toppers from Amazon. It means you’ll get a bespoke party cake but save loads! You can even hire special shaped cake tins these days too!

Family Life How to teach our girls to be strong in the 21st century By Tanith Carey Girls usually get off to a flying start. They talk early, are sociable from a young age and often throw themselves into school. But somewhere around the age of nine or ten, their confidence can take a nose-dive. They become confused by mixed messages, which tell them they can be anything, but the most important thing about them is how they look. They are baffled to be told they should always try their best - but at the same time should not stand out too much. This is also the age when they are also heading into their most vulnerable phase of life - their teen years – when they will be stepping through a minefield of sexual politics, played on phones and over the internet But as the author of the new book Girls, Uninterrupted, I know that we can create a strong core of self-belief in our girls’ formative years, they will be better able to resist the pressure to behave in ways which are not always good for them later on. My daughters are not weak and defenceless and neither are yours. But in a challenging world full of mixed signals about how they should look and who they should be, here’s FIVE ways to make girls stronger when they need it most. START EARLY: The tween years – the ages between seven and twelve – offer a critical window when parents can help girls develop an unassailable sense of self. It’s during this period that our power to positively influence our children is also at its peak – before the inevitable separation of adolescence means our daughters’ peers MAY/JUNE 2016
thoughts with positive ones. For example, if that inner voice tells her, ‘You can’t do this’, show her she can substitute that thought with: ‘This might be tricky, but I can learn.’
begin to drown us out. If we really work at staying connected to our girls in those years, we have a better chance of being able to guide them when things get really tough when they are teens. KEEP TALKING: The good news is that the latest research shows the best defence against bad influences is you, the parent. One upside of the sexualised culture is that fewer topics are off-limits when we talk to our children – and in my book Girls, Uninterrupted, you will see there really are age-appropriate ways to tackle every subject, from sexting to to self-harming. To help make this possible, set aside – and stick to – a regular, special time for you and your daughter to spend together. Let her decide what you do together so she feels able to relax and enjoy it. Don’t lecture, and let her bring up topics of conversations that are important to her. Resist the temptation to preach, judge or over-react, so she keeps
coming back. If we really work at staying connected to our girls early on, we have a better chance of being able to guide them when things get tougher.
SHOW YOUR DAUGHTER HOW TO BE HER OWN BEST FRIEND: From around the age of about nine, girls can start to give themselves a very hard time for saying or doing the wrong thing. First, tell her not to be so tough on herself – and tell her how you, as an adult, have also made mistakes. By the same token, little girls are told to love their mummies, daddies, siblings and pets – yet we often forget to give our daughters permission to love themselves too. Tell her that being her own best friend doesn’t make her big-headed – it just makes means she’s looking out for herself.
EXPLAIN HOW TO RECOGNISE NEGATIVE VOICES IN HER HEAD: When a girl hears a voice telling her she’s not good enough, she tends to assume it’s right. Tell her that just because she hears it, doesn’t mean she has to listen. Help her give self-critical thoughts a name so can recognise they are worries rather than realities and that she can choose to ignore them. Show her too how to replace negative
TRAIN HER TO BECOME MEDIA LITERATE: In a world where a young girls will see more pictures of physical beauty in one month than we saw in a year, girls need training to process these images. In the two minutes you take to show her how a magazine photograph of an ultra-skinny perfect celebrity has been airbrushed, you have taught her not to hold herself up to an image of perfection that doesn’t exist.

Get Outdoors
Spring into Summer with a Bluebell Walk There are more than 1,300 Bluebell Woods in the UK, but we are lucky that some of the very best are located within West Berkshire and the Thames Valley. Legend says that a field of bluebells is intricately woven with fairy enchantments so if you want to go and catch one of nature’s most magical and stunning displays, here is our guide to the best bluebell walks in Reading, Henley, Wokingham, Bracknell and Newbury. Warburg Nature Reserve Warburg Nature Reserve is nestled in the Chiltern Hills between Nettlebed and Henley and in late Spring it is awash with bluebells and wood anemones. As well as seeing the carpets of bluebells, visitors can pop into the Interpretation Centre to pick up a free Nature Detectives Trail backpack containing games, trail notes and spotter sheets for wildlife. Children can follow the trail through the woods, the wildlife pond and the grassy glades at their own pace. Visitors should be aware that the last mile of the road from Bix to Warburg is in poor condition so visitors might like to consider walking to the reserve instead. www.bbowt.org.uk
Moor Copse Nature Reserve The reserve is open all year round, and is renowned for its stunning array of woodland flowers, birds, butterflies and moths and being close to the river, you could well spot some water rats and voles too! There will be an organised Spring Bluebell Walk around the Nature 22
www.familiestvw.co.uk Tel: 0118 9745 398
Reserve on 1 May 2016 between 2.30pm and 4.30pm. Although this 2 mile walk is suitable for all, it will cover uneven ground and it could be muddy, so don’t forget your wellies! Find Moor Copse on the A340 at Tidmarsh between Pangbourne and Theale www.bbowt.org.uk/whats-on
Bowdown Woods Nature Reserve Bowdon Woods are situated on the edge of Greenham Common, near Newbury. This reserve forms part of the West Berkshire Living Landscape, a Wildlife Trust project to create space for wildlife and people together, and it is certainly working as you are likely to spot deer, snakes and other reptiles enjoying their natural habitat as you venture into the woods. Part of the site used to be an ammunition store during and after the Second World War and it is a great example of how nature can thrive and develop on a site vacated by people. There are a variety of walks at the reserve suitable for all age groups. Find out more at www.bbowt. org.uk/reserves/bowdown-woods
Tinkers, Jocks and Temple Copse As well as hazel coppice woodlands bursting with bluebells, visitors can expect to see a wide range of woodland flora, bird and insect life. If you are really lucky then you might even catch a glimpse of badgers, squirrels, roe deer and all three species of woodpecker. The best place for car parking is Jocks Lane Recreation Ground, off Binfield Road in Bracknell. So why not make a day of it with a picnic and a play in the Recreation Ground after your walk? More details and maps can be found at www.bracknell-forest.gov.uk/ thethreecopses
Piggy Wood The fabulously named Piggy Wood is located in the Quelm Park Estate, in the Parish of Warfield. During the spring, the wood is covered by a colourful carpet of wildflowers including bluebells, white wood anemone and yellow wood avens. You are also likely to see a number of butterflies and dragonflies. MAY/JUNE 2016
Get Outdoors Cliveden near Maidenhead For glorious gardens overlooking the River Thames, there is no better place than Cliveden! Within the miles of National Trust woodlands you’ll find pockets of bluebells around every turn. However, it is the family play trail (where kids can balance on tree trunks or try out a rope swing) and fitness trail areas which both have the most spectacular and intense displays. Look out for cowslips, snowy wood anemones and dog violets too. For further information visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk/cliveden/things-to-see-and-do/ woodlands/ or call 01628 605 069.
Basildon Park
The entrance to Piggy Wood is located off Newport Drive, Warfield. Roadside parking is available. For more information visit www.bracknell-forest.gov.uk/piggywood
Whitegrove Copse, Sage Walk This ancient woodland can be found to the north of Bracknell, off Harvest Ride in Warfield. As well as bluebells, the wood is a haven for birds. Its surfaced paths are great for pushchairs and there are also cycle paths if you fancy something more active. There’s no formal car park so use Larks Hill car park, off Harvest Ride and walk 10 minutes along Harvest Ride to access the site. Details at www.bracknell-forest.gov.uk/whitegrove-copse
Basildon Park, situated between Pangbourne and Streatley, has 400 acres of countryside for you to explore and enjoy with Spring providing delicate bluebells and buttercups aplenty! If you fancy seeing where some of the scenes of Downton Abbey were shot, you can have a tour of the house too! For information and admission prices call 0118 984 3040 or visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk/basildonpark
Ashridge Estate If you want to travel further afield one of the most famous and popular displays of bluebells can be seen on the Ashridge Estate, situated 3 miles north of the A41 between Tring and Berkhamstead. On 7th May 2016, between 10am and 2pm you can join the Ashridge bluebell walk. This four-hour guided walk will take you to the best areas for breathtaking views of the famous bluebells. Booking is essential and tickets are £5 for adults and £3 for children. Call 01442851227 or visit www. nationaltrust.org.uk/ashridge-estate
Popes Meadow Popes Meadow is a quiet and peaceful haven for wildlife and has both open parkland, good access by car and bus and a small wooded copse full of bluebells. It’s a Green Flag Award winning site (the first in Berkshire to be awarded the honour) and has a disabled access route (not through the bluebells though), picnic areas, orienteering and a small play park. Find it in Binfield, Off St Marks Road, RG42 4AY. Find out more at www.bracknell-forest.gov.uk/popesmeadow-leaflet

Family Fun
Festivals are fun Easy steps to make your kids’ first festival a breeze By Sally J. Hall Introducing your children to all kinds of music can be a great way to give them a lifelong love of everything from folk to classical. Many of the UK’s festivals have plenty to do for the whole family and with some careful planning and by packing a few essentials, you’ll all have a great time.
Where to stay If you have (and know how to put up) a tent, this can be the most cost-effective way of attending a festival, as ticket prices can be high. Check the tent before you go, to ensure it has all its poles and pins. A good ground sheet is a must, as are camp beds or selfinflating air beds. A playpen is great for babies and small children to sleep in at night and play in the day. Alternatively, other options, from preerected tents to Yurts and teepees may be provided. Take a look at the festival’s website to see what’s suitable. If you can’t face roughing it, book a local hotel or bed & breakfast. You’ll have a bolthole should the weather turn nasty and somewhere to wash properly!
Site Map Take time to orient yourself around the site, find where your favourite bands will be and most importantly, check out where the loos and showers are. These can get very busy and there are often long queues. For small kids, take a travel potty, as kids often need to ‘go’ quite suddenly. Most festivals have a craft and activities area for kids too. Pushchairs can be tricky to use if the ground is muddy. Carriers are more portable and take up less space... With small kids, try to camp in the family or quiet areas so that you won’t all be kept awake by people coming back to their tents (in all conditions) through the small hours.
Setting up Car parks can be quite a way from camps, so try to ensure that all gear can be put into a couple of backpacks for you and your partner to carry – and 30

still have a hand free for the kids. Some festivals rent a wagon to transport your stuff, which you can then use to pull the kids around in.
cards, with you in a day pack all day. Never leave them in your tent.
What to eat
Many festivals now have a fancy dress parade as part of the fun, so take costumes. Some things can be made on-site at a craft stall. Face paints are great to pack, as are glow sticks and bubbles.
There are usually lots of food stalls but bear in mind they can be pricey. If you want to do your own cooking, invest in a camp stove. Easy, one pot meals are best, like soups, stews, rice or pasta, Freeze some home made meals, then just before you leave, put them in a cool box together with drinks and milk. Take lots of snacks too, in case cooking or queuing for meals takes longer than you think!
Safety Kids should have your name (not theirs) and number on them in case they get separated. Write it on their arm, or buy luggage tags and attach them to their clothes and bags. Talk to them about how to behave should they get lost. Make sure your phone is charged, so if your kids do get separated, you are able to be contacted. Dress your kids in bright clothes so you can spot them and take a photo of them each morning, so if they go wandering, you can remember how they were dressed and show others. Don’t take valuables and keep things you can’t leave behind, such as phone, keys, your purse and credit

Zero Degrees Restaurant and Microbrewery, Reading Having lived in or near Reading for the past decade and eaten in many of its restaurants, I’m slightly embarrassed to admit having never visited Zero Degrees, either for a drink or a meal, so I was excited to visit this centrally located bar, restaurant and microbrewery right next to the Oracle for a ‘date night’ with my husband sans enfants. The first thing you notice on entering the restaurant is the huge microbrewery – its steel kegs and vats proudly on display as the focal point of the venue, which is decorated in a similarly industrial style. Zero Degrees produces five craft beers on the premises and although I can’t claim to be a beer lover, I did enjoy their mango beer enough to order a second glass. Light, crisp and not too sweet, this I’m sure this beer will be a popular choice on the restaurant’s terrace come the summer. My husband chose their popular Black Lager which he enjoyed. The menu features Italian staples including pasta, risotto and more than twenty types of pizza, as well as a range of gourmet sausages and some interesting salads too. Fried calamari to start was crispy not rubbery and the generous portion of lobster bisque gnocchi whilst lacking somewhat in presentation, tasted creamy, fishy and delicious. My husband fancied pizza but struggled to decide which to choose as there are so many unusual flavours on offer, including Jamaican Chicken, Spiced Lamb and King Prawn. He opted for Peking Duck which came complete with spring onion, hoisin sauce and tortillas. A little too heavy on the sweet hoisin sauce for me but he

managed to demolish it all! All Zero Degrees pizzas are cooked in their authentic wood fired oven on the premises which gives a lovely crisp, airy and slightly smoky dough. My generous bowl of moules mariniere came in a simple yet delicious white wine and cream sauce and were served with skinny fries. Having eaten extremely well we were too stuffed for pudding but might have been tempted by the dessert pizzas on offer including caramelised fig, pecan pie or chocolate and banana! Service throughout was swift, friendly and efficient with our server knowledgeable enough about the menu to recommend several dishes to us. Whilst they don’t offer a specific children’s menu, half portions of every dish can be ordered and there is plenty of choice that would suit most small appetites. Prices are reasonable with a three course meal for two with beer setting you back around £60. This is a great spot for lunch with the kids or a pre-theatre or pre-cinema meal, and can also accommodate larger numbers for a party in this unique venue. www.zerodegrees.co.uk
