Mums mean BUSINESS Inside the MIND of your child Why parents and schools are turning to brain profiling
Welcome back… I think I owe about half of you an apology – if you’re the mum or dad of a boy I certainly do. I have, over the past 7 years, looked at you and felt a little bit smug. As the mum of two girls, I thought I had it all. While I snapped up a host of pink frilly outfits, I watched as the mums of boys were left to choose from a sea of brown and darker brown. As we spent pre-school hours with craft and creativity, the boys were hitting each other with sticks and eating worms. But that’s all changed. I’m no longer feeling smug. You see now, I’m mum to a tweenager – a 7 year old girl with the attitude of a 14 year old and the bargaining skills of a politician. Every minute, of every day is a battle and I can do nothing right. Take this morning for instance. She had ‘placed’ her dressing gown on the kitchen floor and when I asked her to pick it up she replied (while lowering her shoulders and growling),“Am I a slave in this house?” “If you were Isobel, I’d sack you,” I replied. Aside from the daily ding dongs, bringing up a daughter is feeling pretty daunting. Earlier this year a survey revealed almost a million teenage girls feel ‘worthless’. That’s a frightening statistic so I’m delighted we have the advice of parenting expert Tanith Carey on how to build up our daughters’ self esteem. Apparently threatening them with the sack isn’t recommended. This issue is our biggest yet – a bumper 32 pages of summer days out, fun packed camps and some parenting tips that I hope help keep you sane over the long holiday. And if, like me, you feel you’ve not yet mastered the dark art of parenting, consider these wise words from Phil Dunphy from the hit US TV show Modern Family. “When it comes to parenting, our parents faked it, now we’re faking it, and all we can hope for is that our kids don’t turn out to be serial killers!” Here’s to a summer of faking it! Enjoy!

Mums (to be) MEAN BUSINESS
NGELA STUBBS has been casting a rather different eye over the gorgeous outfits in her children’s clothes boutique since she fell pregnant. Boo! Baby & Child has always stocked the practical alongside the perfectly beautiful, but now mum to be Angela baby roots is thinking about more than the simply natural tree gifts for special occasions bottom line.
“I’ve always offered nice but practical clothes in our baby ranges,” says Angela. “But now, I’m even more conscious because I’m imagining myself changing my baby a dozen times a day!” Angela opened the doors to Boo! eight years ago in Bardsey, moving to Boston Spa in 2007. She’s built up a loyal following of parents who travel from across Yorkshire to this contemporary corner shop, packed with an affordable alternative to the high street. And last year, Boo! became even more affordable with the launch of Boo! As New. “Customers were telling me either they’d bought outfits which they’d had no wear out of, or they’d grown out of,” said Angela. “Now they bring in their pre-owned clothes and we agree a price. The clothes stay on the rails for eight to ten weeks and we split the sale price 50/50. If customers choose to spend that money at Boo! they keep 60% of the sale price.” Angela’s happy to accept brands bought in other boutiques as well as top end high street names. The daily ‘as new’ arrivals have attracted new customers as well as being a hit with regulars. It also taps into people’s desire to recycle. However the Boo! empire doesn’t end there. Angela’s real passion decorates the walls and windows of her Boston Spa boutique. After four years of photographing families across Yorkshire, she’s built up a sterling reputation for capturing the essence of the children she shoots. “I try to tell a story,” explains Angela. “It’s important to me to get the little details like the children playing with a toy, or listening to mum read a story – these are the details of childhood that disappear in a flash. These are the things that very often don’t get recorded.” With Angela’s own family journey about to begin, she’s determined not to miss a moment. “When someone comes to me wanting a newborn shoot, I explain they have to be photographed in the first ten days to get that newborn-ness. They change so quickly. So, I have this theory that I’m going to photograph our baby every day. Ask me how I’ve got on in a years time!” Something tells me getting the right outfit for those daily shoots won’t be a problem! Boo! Baby & Child and Boo! Inside the mind of Your CHILD
I
T’S Sunday afternoon and the Butters house is alive with the sound of shouting as Isobel unpacks her homework. Every week at about this time the battle begins and the arguments are always the same. “Why can’t you settle down and do it on your own? You don’t need to talk to me about every single decision Isobel,” I confidently announce. But she does, because that’s how her brain works. Under the guidance of Nicola Ashton from Profile to Know, Isobel answered a series of questions designed to uncover the way she thinks. The results reveal a child who needs people and the support of a team. The concept of ‘do it yourself’ is not one that Isobel understands. “Isobel produced a very prominent R2 reading – the largest I’ve seen,” explains Nicola. “Everything she will do, she will need to be with people. She needs to learn in company, she needs to talk everything through. She needs the comfort of that.” It’s an eye opening exercise and one that Nicola is offering to parents and school across Yorkshire. From the profile Nicola creates, schools can tailor learning, give advice on future careers and parents can understand how to get the best out of their child. Swimming is one of the first activities parents choose to do with their child and every week Waterbabies teaches 1,000 children across Yorkshire the basics. It’s a hugely popular class with many drawn to the promise of an underwater photograph of their swimming baby. What do you do at…DANCEWORKS Laura Jakes hands out lily pads to her pre-school frogs at her Tuesday afternoon class on Fir Tree Lane in Moortown. The three year olds have already marched like a soldier, moved like a robot and dusted Cinderella’s castle. This is Danceworks’ entry level dance class and it’s an opportunity for children to learn the foundations under some expert guidance. “We cover all aspects of co-ordination – that’s marching, skipping and galloping,” explains Laura. “The classes are themed to build up the children’s confidence and bring on their imagination.” And imagination is at the very heart of these sessions. Laura has the children captivated whether it’s blowing up an imaginary balloon or playing the part of a grumpy step-mother, the children are a million miles away from the North Leeds Scout Hut. While the children dance, parents are kept out of sight so the only adult in the room is Laura. This means they concentrate only on the instructions and the dancing. “It’s a class for children moving into Reception – they need to get used to the adult talking, one voice in charge. Parents come in at the end of each term so they can see the progress.” Laura has been running classes here since 1993. Back then she had just 20 students. Today she has 130 on her books, ranging in age from these three year olds, to a group of dedicated 18 year olds who are about to head off to university.
From this introduction to dance, children can move to street jazz, tap, ballet and modern and Laura says it’s a privilege to see the children develop. “I think dancing gives you confidence,” she explains. “It’s about coming to a class and enjoying it. For me, it’s not about finding talent – that will always shine. It’s about making sure every one of these children feel part of the class.” Laura runs pre-school dance classes in Moortown on Tuesday and Friday afternoons. Danceworks also offers ballet, street jazz, tap and modern classes. www.danceworks-leeds.co.uk • 0113 295 0126

Building SELF ESTEEM from the start In a recent survey almost a million teenage girls said they felt ‘worthless’. Mum of two and author of “Where Has My Little Girl Gone?” Tanith Carey looks at how we give our daughters the greatest gift of all. When your daughter is still little, it’s easy to think that as mums we can protect them from everything – and that includes growing up too soon. It’s very tempting to think that by not dressing our little girls in T-shirts that say ‘Future Porn Star’, we can make sure they hold onto their innocence. But I’ve found that sexualisation is in the air our daughters breath – and because it’s all around us, it’s hard to stop them comparing themselves to unrealistic portrayals of women. Indeed, earlier this year a Demos reports found that by the time they are teenagers, 900,000 girls in the UK feel ‘worthless’. Of course, the teenage years feel like a long way off when your daughter is in nursery or primary school. But it really is never too young to start. Of course, all parents set out with the vague aim of wanting their daughters to feel good about themselves. But it’s a question of how much priority we give this goal, amid our need to see our children get good exam results, look good – and reflect well on us. With all the academic and social success in the world, our girls will never be truly happy or successful without self-esteem. That’s why developing healthy self-esteem should be the first and ultimate goal, not a by-product that we hope she picks up along the way. So how do we achieve it? To start with, it all seems so easy. When as a toddler, your child tells you she’s ‘a good girl’, it’s because she’s been told so by you – and the other adults raising her. But after the Award winning simplicity of those early years, self-esteem is so more than just telling our daughters we love them. Art & Craft That’s the easy part. sessions Self-esteem in children also comes from feeling competent, capable and connected to a bigger for 12 months – picture. As your daughter gets older, it’s derived from knowing herself and what she is capable of. 11 years old It comes from appreciating what she’s already achieved and how she has made a difference. Of course, your daughter’s opinion of herself fluctuates all the time. Your five-year-old may feel great about herself You create, we clear up! s also available Sessions in Yeadon & Horsforth • Partie the day she writes her name in joined up writing, but terrible about herself the day her best friend decides she wants to spend break-time with someone else. Beyond that, as parents we can help our girls roll with the punches – and to develop the resilience www.thecreationstation.co.uk they need to handle the ups and down of life. We can help her learn that if she falls down, she can get up again. It won’t stop your daughter from failing – but it might give her a safety net when she does. By helping our girls to view their strengths realistically, learn new skills, and by showing her she is loved for who she is, not what she does, gradually our daughters will develop the inner core to stand firmer against the negative influences around her. What you can do: n Tell your daughter how lucky you are to have her: say how privileged you feel to help raise her. Tell her all the ways she has changed your life for the better. n Tell her she is unique: If you tell your daughter there is only one person in the world like her, you will be telling her the truth. Don’t compare her – for good or bad – with anyone else. n Tell her you like her: Most children expect us to love them. We’re their parents – it’s our job. But “liking” is a choice. When we tell our child we like her, we are saying we like spending time with her and the person she has become. n Take the time to notice: Many parents believe they are giving their girls self-esteem by constantly telling them how well they are doing at everything from getting out of bed in the morning to eating their breakfast. The problem is that after a while your daughter has heard “Well done” so many times that the words become meaningless. Instead really take time to notice the specifics of what she is doing right. Tell her: “You’ve put all your clothes away” then tell her what’s right about it, like “Tomorrow, you’ll know where to find everything”. By complimenting her on the fine details of what she’s done right, instead of criticising her for doing wrong, your daughter will not only know you are truly paying attention, she will also want to do it again.

LOTHERTON HALL has long been a Families Leeds’ favourite. Pay for your parking and enjoy the playground, the bird garden and the super grounds. TRISON LES
Is YOUR family SUN SAFE? The UK has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in Europe. So how do you keep your family safe in the sun this summer? Families Leeds has teamed up with first aid expert Helen Underwood to bring you the best advice. Did you know that a child’s skin can burn after just ten minutes in the sun? If your little one suffers six serious cases of sunburn, their chances of developing skin cancer doubles. Yet despite these statistics, one in ten parents still forget to slap on the sun cream on a sunny day. Helen Underwood runs first aid courses for parents and childcare professionals across Yorkshire. She says to keep your child safe in the sun, the message is simple. “I tell parents Slip, Slop, Slap! Slip on a shirt, slop on the sun cream and slap on a hat. A child’s skin is so fragile. But this simple message isn’t getting through. A recent survey revealed nearly half of all children have been sunburnt at school because parents either fail to slap on the sun cream in the morning or don’t put on enough. Topping up the protection before playtime is essential, so teaching your child to put sun cream on the most exposed areas is vital. “I have a real problem with schools that have a policy which doesn’t allow staff to put sun cream on children, says Helen. “My advice is talk to your teacher and provide a sun cream with a spray nozzle so it’s easy to apply. Teach your child to concentrate on the back of their neck, their face and their arms, but make sure they start the day with sun cream already on. When parents do remember to apply sun cream, we’re often not putting enough on. The average 2 year old needs about a tablespoon, while for an 8 year old, the advice is 2 tablespoons. Experts say Factor 30 is the minimum protection for children with Factor 50 encouraged by most. However, there’s still some confusion amongst parents. “I’ve had parents tell me they’ve been advised NOT to put sun cream on their baby’s skin, explains Helen Underwood. “If your baby is out in the sun, they need to have cream on. There are plenty of baby ‘safe’ creams on the market. Talk to your pharmacist if you’re concerned. Just make sure it’s washed off at bathtime.

Summer days don’t just bring the threat of sunburn. Hours of running around in the great outdoors can lead to dehydration if fluid levels aren’t kept up. Helen says it’s important to have regular drink breaks and periods in the shade because young children aren’t able to regulate their own temperature in the same way adults can. The price of not protecting your family is clear – two people under 35 are diagnosed with the deadliest form of skin cancer every day. Blocking out the sun today, reduces the risk of your child developing the disease tomorrow and that is every parent’s responsibility. “It’s not just fair haired children who need to be sun safe, says Helen. “We have to protect all our children because they’re too young to look after themselves.
TOP TIPS for SUN SAFETY  Apply sun cream 15 – 30 minutes BEFORE going into the sun. It gives it time to absorb.  Team sun cream with a UV suit or top – especially if you’re around the water. Take a look at www.sunuva.com for some great products.  One application of sun cream WON’T last all day. Re-apply after a swim, or every 2 – 3 hours.  Teach your child to apply their own sun cream so they can top up protection at playtime. Think face, arms and back of the neck.  Don’t forget their EYES. 76% of parents don’t consider sunglasses important. Sun exposure to young eyes can lead to cataracts in adulthood.  Keep hydrated. If your child won’t drink water, make your own lollies and offer them as a treat in the shade on a hot day. Underwood Training runs first aid courses across Yorkshire. Stay SUN SAFE with a UV Angel… Slapping on the suncream can be a battle especially when children don’t understand why it’s necessary. Families Leeds has discovered a fun range of sun jewellery from Yorkshire based UV Angel.
AFTER UV
These great products, made from sun sensitive beads, change colour to let you know that the UV you’re being exposed to could be damaging your skin. “The idea came after a good friend developed skin cancer,” says Angela Thompson from UV Angel. “When the beads change colour, it makes you think. It reminds you that there’s UV out there and you need to protect yourself.” There’s a wide range of UV Angel products to choose from including bag tags, key rings, necklaces and bracelets. There’s a fun range for children, as well as a more contemporary range for mums. The darker the beads go, the more UV there is and they act as a great way to prompt not just sun cream application, but also conversation about the dangers of the sun. “Kids cook quickly so it’s a parent’s responsibility to protect them,” says Angela. “If you have a bead on your bag or your body and you see it change colour, ask: Do the kids need more cream? Do we need to get out of the sun?” BEFORE UV Families Leeds’ editorial team tested the UV Angel products on a recent holiday. The girls liked the bracelets and keyrings, and were interested in what made the beads change colour so quickly. LEEDS “It gave me the opportunity to talk to Isobel and Eliza about sun safety and the threat of skin cancer if you don’t protect yourself,” says Families Leeds Editor Sarah Butters. PLACE “What surprised us was the UV around even on a cloudy day.”

Choosing a CAMP… Summer camps are about more than just childcare. It’s about trying something new and making new friends. Here are some great options to keep kids busy this school holiday.
STAGECOACH Brigshaw High School, Allerton Bywater • 1st – 5th August..
Based at: Moorlands School – Leeds & Belmont Grosvenor School, Birstwith, Harrogate. Swimming Lessons take place on weekday evenings and Saturday mornings Intensive courses are also available during every holiday
We teach all standards of swimmers FROM 3 YEARS
Camp Rock comes to Yorkshire this summer and you’re invited to be part of it. Stagecoach Kippax and Wetherby is running a week long workshop where young performers will take songs from the two Camp Rock movies from page to stage in just 5 days! “Nothing is pre-cast or pre-decided,” says Lisa Druett the school’s Principal. “Children can volunteer, and they’re asked what they want to do within the production, but it’s their choice. It’s impressive how quickly the group becomes supportive of each other.” The children, aged from 4 – 18 will spend the week working towards a Friday night performance. This summer that will include songs from both Camp Rock and Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam. It’s a huge challenge, but one Lisa knows the children will rise to. “I’ve seen children who didn’t say a word when they first came along, and now they’re taking on leading roles,” says Lisa. “That’s the confidence Stagecoach gives you.” Many of the children who attend Stagecoach holiday workshops, don’t attend the weekly sessions.
That means lots of new faces and new friendships – a bit like a summer spent at Camp Rock! Camps begin at 10am with a performance for parents on the final day. Making MATHS
FUN in the Come the end of term, it’s tempting to close the books and give children a complete break from learning. But that can mean the new term feels like you’re starting from scratch. Simon Deacon from First Class Learning looks at ways to keep brains active this summer.
SUN! DO SOMETHING EVERY DAY.
Let your child learn electrifying moves whilst turning into a confident person. Our programmes develop a deep rooted respect for parents, teachers & law and order. WARRIOR MARTIAL ARTS ACADEMY Robin Mills, Greengates Call Now for your 2 trial classes 07909 518939 or e-mail enquiries@warriormaa.co.uk
Once your child starts school it’s important to support their growing perception of mathematics. So if maths is not your thing, don’t say so. Instead, have fun finding out together. Children develop a love of books if parents read to them regularly, and the same principle applies to maths. Play maths puzzles every day and actively look for real world examples. See if your child can spot number patterns in the prices when you’re doing the supermarket shop. How much is each bag of crisps in a multipack? How much change out of £5? Is two for the price of one really a good deal? Even counting boxes of shredded wheat can be a useful experience for many children. Maths isn’t just abstract numbers, any real world examples will help to colour their understanding.
MAKE IT FUN. Create a summer project to take to school at the start of the new term. Without mathematics, we wouldn’t have cars or computers, or countless other things we take for granted. Get your children to find out about history’s great engineers – from the pyramidbuilders of Egypt, to the teams who build Formula 1 Cars. They’ll soon get the message that maths makes the world go round. The internet is awash with ideas and information. Could your child find out how the Egyptians created a counting system? Use hieroglyphics to answer a maths question? Make a storyboard or produce a video? Find out how fast a Formula 1 car is? Look at how speed is measured?
TRY A MATHS CAMP.

You’ve probably signed your child up to a sport or craft camp this summer. But how about slotting in something academic during your next break? Holiday ‘schools’ are becoming increasingly popular – handled sensitively they can be a brilliant way to encourage children to see education continues outside of school. First Class Learning offers a ‘real maths for real kids’ approach using everyday craft or drama activities. Making a kite is a good experience but using shape, size, height, length of string can be a brilliant springboard to understanding the maths concepts. It doesn’t have to be overly ‘educational’ – just relevant. Adding the team scores after the football match, working out the area of a sandwich and making up a maths ‘rap’ can all be excellent real life learning experiences. Keeping a young mind active over the holidays will be rewarded when they return to school! First Class Learning will run camps in October Half Term. For more details, take a look at www.firstclasslearning.co.uk or call Simon on 0113 267 1150.

FAMILY CYCLING Child seats. Trailers. Tagalongs. With the right kit you can carry children from birth right through to independent cycling. John Stainthorpe from Cyclesense’s family showroom at Thorp Arch gives his advice on how to make family cycling fun. CHILD TRAILERS From Birth to 6 years old The lightweight option for pulling along more than one child in a warm, dry pod. PROS There’s room for your child to chat, play, and sleep easily with cushions for neck support. If the adult bike has a fall, the swivelling hitch means the trailer stays upright so they’re surprisingly safe. These tend to be more comfortable than child seats. CONS It’s difficult to talk to your child and it can be a bumpy ride. Some of the more expensive models come with suspension. These are a wide cycle accessory, so won’t fit through some cycle trail barriers. REAR CHILD-SEATS From 6 months to 5 years old Modern rear child-seats are made from tough plastic in a wraparound shape with all manner of additional safety features. A high back will protect when the child snaps his or her head back when riding along. There’s generally a secure, three-point harness and some have recline features to use once the child has fallen asleep.
to buy second hand s DON’T be tempted ngs. You don’t know car seats and tag alo can’t guarantee their history and so their safety
TAGALONGS From 4 to 9 years old This is a third wheel attached to a frame extension fitted with handlebars enabling a child to pedal (or not) but not steer. In effect, add a tagalong to an adult bike and you have an articulated tandem. PROS Your child will feel like they’re helping with the hard work! CONS It can be a floppy and unstable ride. If a child stops pedalling they can get cold very quickly. John and his team have a great display of family friendly cycle products at the Cyclesense store at Thorp Arch near Wetherby. www.cyclesense.co.uk • 01937 844 068
PROS Talking to your child is easy. Lighter and less expensive than trailers. CONS As the child is carried high on the bike there’s a risk of topple over if you leave the bike unattended. And you’re only going to be able to transport one child. FRONT CHILD-SEATS From 12 months to 5 years old Common on the Continent, rare in the UK and USA, front mounting child seats are deemed more dangerous than rear child seats but there’s little evidence to back up such fears. The child perches on a mini-saddle on the top-tube of the parent’s bike, with feet strapped into small footrests. They’re not compatible with all bikes and can make for a ‘knees out’ riding motion. PROS Talking to a child is even easier than with a rear facing child-seat and they have the same view as you. They’re lighter and less expensive than a trailer. CONS High risk of topple over if you leave the bike unattended and again, you can only transport one child.
adult bike you’re using to s REMEMBER: make sure the good working order. pull or carry your child is in
