Alarming number of children using AI for their homework
A quarter of pupils use ChatGTP and other AI tools to help with their schooling according to recent research from the online safety group, Internet Matters. The research was based on a survey of two thousand parents of children ages 4-17 and one thousand children ages 9-17.
The study showed that of those using AI more than half of pupils are using the tools to complete teacher assignments or homework. However, the research also found that sixty percent of schools have not spoken to pupils about the appropriate use of AI.
Experts say neither educators nor the government has kept up with the exponential increase in the use of AI technology among pupils. They are calling for new guidance so that pupils are operating on a ‘level playing field.’ www.internetmatters.org

Choose Respect during AntiBullying Week 2024
Anti-Bullying Week runs from 11 to 15 November this year, with the theme ‘Choose Respect.’
The Anti-Bullying Alliance chose this theme following consultation with teachers and pupils who wanted a theme that empowered them to do something positive to counter the harm and hurt caused by bullying.
The week will kick off with Odd Socks Day on Tuesday 12 November, during which adults and children wear odd socks to celebrate our uniqueness.
Following the success of the campaign in 2023, when eighty percent of schools marked the week, therefore reaching over 7.5 million children and young people, Anti-Bullying Week reminds everyone that we can bring an end to bullying. www.anti-bullyingalliance.org.uk
Sleep Nanny Q&A
Question: Please can I have some help about how to get back on track after illness with my little one
Answer: Not sleeping through the night after an illness is typically a temporary phase. There might be some separation anxiety, so a bit of nighttime support could be needed. However, if they were sleeping through the night before the illness, they will likely resume that pattern soon.
Question: My 12 month old baby goes to bed at 7pm, how do I stop her from wanting a bottle at 5am every morning.
Answer:You’ll need to ensure it's not genuine hunger. Try reducing the amount you offer by 1 ounce every other day.
Question: Will sleep training damage my bond with my child?
Answer: Helping your child develop and maintain healthy sleep habits in a loving and mindful manner is a wonderful way to strengthen your bond. Regardless of the sleep training method you choose, I always encourage parents to use the pre-bedtime routine to snuggle and enjoy their baby, including feeding or rocking—just not all the way to sleep.
It's normal for children to resist changes to established routines; some fussing or crying is often (though not always) part of the sleep training process. In my customised sleep plans, I provide various strategies to minimise tears, ensuring parents can make changes without stepping too far outside their comfort zones.
Join the Baby and Child Sleep Masterclass, an online event held twice a month to help families with expert sleep advice. Upcoming dates include 4th November, 22nd November, 2nd December, and 20th December. Each session costs £25 per family and provides valuable guidance on improving your child's sleep.

How to introduce your child to the benefits of music
You may have heard that music is good for your child’s brain, but can it really make that much of a difference? The short answer is yes. There are good reasons to introduce your child to music early—and it may be easier than you think
WHAT THE RESEARCH SAYS ABOUT HOW MUSIC AFFECTS BRAIN DEVELOPMENT:
Early exposure to music has been shown to improve many school readiness skills like math, language, and executive function. HERE’S WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT HOW MUSIC CAN BENEFIT YOUR CHILD’S BRAIN:
There’s an early and important connection between maths and music. Research suggests that babies and toddlers may be innately capable of seeing and hearing patterns. Even newborns begin to notice patterns as they are soothed with steady rocking, patting, and singing beats. This early link can impact future learning—simply listening to music with a steady tempo may increase young children’s attention to a maths activity. Interacting with music can build reasoning skills. Spatial-temporal reasoning is a form of problem solving that involves using our minds to imagine, visualize, and mentally manipulate objects. Young children use this reasoning when they build block towers or work their first puzzles. It’s a set of skills that are necessary in all sorts of occupations, from
painting and graphic design to engineering and urban planning. Studies show that playing music can boost these skills, as your child learns to translate abstract ideas—like notes on a sheet of music—into sounds, rhythms, and songs.
Engaging with music may help preschoolers think before they act. Following directions is a big part of music—your child learns to start and stop, play loudly or quietly, and make the
right sound by hitting this note and not that one. This musical play can help strengthen your child’s inhibition—an executive function that includes skills like impulse control and emotional regulation. Research shows that young children who learn to play an instrument may develop these skills faster. Children who play musical instruments at a young age can show improved language skills. There might be a reason that we use the word “reading” to describe how a child engages with books and music. The two skills are closely aligned: both require us to understand how symbols can be combined to make something new, like stories or songs. Studies suggest that engaging with rhyme and music at an early age may be linked with increased vocabulary and reading ability. Music gets children moving. Research finds that babies and young children tend to engage in more movement in response to music than to plain speech. Music gives them a chance to practice both gross motor control and proprioception, the understanding of where their body is in space. Learning to play an instrument at a young age can boost your child’s fine motor skills as well.

How to Build Confidence & Resilience in Girls
Our girls face a plethora of pressures in this modern world. According to the New York Times, by the age of six, young girls are less likely to view their own gender as ‘brilliant’. The journal Science reported that six-year-old girls start to believe specific activities are ‘not for them’, simply because they think they’re not smart enough. Furthermore, there is increasing concern about rising levels of unhappiness in girls, which is why it is crucial that we take time to have conversations with our girls and guide them to becoming their best selves. Building selfesteem and resilience in our girls is key to helping them to navigate their relationships, schoolwork and beyond.
Our girls go through several changes and challenges, and so I used my own platform to share seven empowering conversations in my book, Rise of the Girl, after having a daughter of my own, who is now fifteen. The global rise of girls and young women expressing thoughts of “am I good enough” can risk our daughters’ motivation and ability to use curiosity to dream big. In my book, Rise of the Girl, I discuss through seven conversations around why it is so important for girls to put their hand up from a young age. To dare to be different, dare to dream, dare to make mistakes and dare to be curious. Anxiety is the thief of dreams, of contentment and of resilience.
FIVE WAYS TO BUILD CONFIDENCE AND RESILIENCE IN GIRLS
MANAGING PEER PRESSURE
Many experience friendship difficulties or feel under pressure to follow what their friends are doing. Not only is it important for girls to follow their own path, but it is also crucial that we explain to our girls the difference between healthy and unhealthy relationships. Spark a conversation on what to do when people act negatively. For example, encourage girls to ask themselves, ‘do I feel good about myself when I’m with this person?’ We need to empower our girls to respect their own self-worth. If your child is happy with who she is, her choices and her values, she is less likely to be influenced by others.
EMBRACE HER STRENGTHS
It’s okay to not be good at everything, and it’s possible to learn and improve over time. The first step is to encourage girls to start embracing their strengths and to identify them. This involves reflecting on skills, talents, and accomplishments. She can make a list of her strengths and revisit it often to remind herself of what she does well. Refer to the list anytime they are feeling doubts about themselves. The power of positivity will go a long way in supporting our girls on their road to success. Whatever success looks like for them. The sky’s the limit.
TRY SOMETHING NEW
Claire Shipman, co-author of the Confidence Code said: “If your daughter is always wanting to be comfortable, she’s not in the right place.” We don’t thrive in comfort zones, and taking the first step can be a great start towards building their self-confidence. Everything starts with a willingness to try, without being afraid of failure. We have learnt that sometimes experiences have their worth. We learn so much through our setbacks and after all, if we had never failed, how would we learn to be resilient?
FIND POSITIVE ROLE MODELS
It takes courage to stand up for what you believe in, at any age. With the right role models around them, our girls can learn how to grow and nurture their own self-confidence. Learning how to say yes to things; and how to say no. In equal measures, our girls need to learn how to stand up for themselves and to stand up for other people. We need to teach them to walk into a room without having to compare themselves
with anyone else. Great role models can teach her the value of good friendships, of kindness and of patience.
Teach her how to manage self-doubt, help her to find her voice, strengthen her self-confidence and find the things that she loves. Raising a girl is not easy but I believe we can achieve it with the right support. Small steps and milestones through their life with your guidance will, in turn, create a resilient, confident girl.
TURNING PASSIONS INTO POSSIBILITIES
Does your daughter dream of becoming a doctor, vet, racing driver, entrepreneur or a rugby player? When it comes to finding our girls’ passions, we can start small but think big.
In celebrating her passions, we can teach her the value of personal mastery and working towards her personal best. Whatever our girls’ ambitions may be, it is our role to actively encourage and nurture their passions. Remember, it’s never too late to get started. Encourage your girl to try new things, lots of things, and watch her eyes open to a world of possibilities. Praise her efforts, not her results. Show our girls that they should strive for excellence, rather than perfection.
Rise of the Girl: Seven Empowering Conversations to Have With Your Daughter by Jo Wimble-Groves is out now (DK, £14.99). Available in the UK, US and Australia. Also, on Kindle and Audible.

Fairytale Farm Learning Hub
Fairytale Farm is excited to welcome families to their Learning Hub at the farm, which launched in September earlier this year. With home schooling on the rise and new government data revealing a sharp rise in children being home educated, with more than 126,000 children being taught at home in 2022-23, an increase of 60% since 2018-19 this support for families and carers couldn’t come at a better time.
The Hub, led by qualified teachers and experts, will be offering creative and fun learning experiences for young people of all ages. The provision includes a preschoolers group and a varied program for homeeducated children to access during term time.
The workshops and groups include an array of subjects such as: art, creative writing, storytelling, drama, outdoor learning, animal care, design and construction, all with a focus on learning through nature.
They also offer after-school clubs for primary aged children, plus mindfulness groups for young people up to aged 16.
BUDDING PERFORMERS
Does your child have a love of performing? Or perhaps you are looking for ways to support their social skills and self confidence? Budding Performers is a relaxed group, led by a trained actor and Primary School Teacher, Natalie. She will guide the children through fun games and exercises which help develop their teamwork
and performance skills in dancing, drama and singing.
Ages 7-11 Tuesdays 4:00-4:45pm
Ages 4-7 Wednesdays 4:00-4:45pm
BUDDING ARTISTS
We all know there are many incredible benefits achieved from time immersed in creativity. If your child has a flair for creating, designing and letting their imagination run wild, Budding Artists is a great way to put their hands to new skills. This group explores different media from drawing and watercolour to simple pottery or constructing things out of wood. The activities will be open ended so accessible for all and where possible, will use recycled or sustainable resources. Occasionally experts will be invited along to teach the children specific skills, plus learning lots about how things are made at Fairytale Farm – from the eco brick building to the giant model dinosaurs in Dino Valley!
Nature is the very best playground and play is the very best way to learn. With this in mind the Outdoor Learning Club offers opportunities for observation, to learn about nature, and record and reflect on their findings. The class combines literacy, speaking and listening skills with other learning opportunities such as working closely with the
animals on the farm and with the natural world. Each session will provide a balance of hands on experiences, time to write individually or as a group and lots of chances to share thoughts and ideas. Using the fabulous creative writing and storytelling resources from The Phive to support writers and help spark their imaginations.
A group for 11-16 year olds to explore their identity further in a safe space. Creative tools such as collage, paint, clay, sand and imagery will be used to express feelings. There will also be Nature walks and time with the animals. The aim is for the Young People to gain a stronger sense of themselves and the others in a group and grow in connection to each other and their environment.
Led by Psychotherapeutic Counsellor Clare Bay who has 20 years experience working with adolescents.
Ages 11-16 Tuesdays 1:30-3:00pm

Unlocking Maths Success with Mathnasium@home: Learning Maths from the Comfort of Home
In today’s fast-paced world, flexibility in learning has become essential, especially when it comes to crucial subjects like maths. Families in Oxford seeking topquality maths tutoring will be delighted to discover Mathnasium@home—an innovative online program from Mathnasium that brings the same proven method for mastering mathematics right to your doorstep. With Mathnasium@home, students can now enjoy the benefits of Mathnasium’s world-renowned teaching techniques without ever having to leave their homes.
Mathnasium’s success is built on the Mathnasium Method, a unique teaching approach that targets each child’s specific learning needs. This method has helped thousands of students improve their maths skills, build confidence, and develop a love for the subject. Whether your child needs to catch up, keep up, or get ahead, Mathnasium’s expert instructors deliver tailored lessons in a way that’s engaging and easy to understand. Mathnasium@home brings this method to life in an online format that mirrors the in-centre experience. Students still work directly with instructors in real time, receiving the same personalised attention and support. Through live, face-to-face instruction and a fully interactive digital whiteboard, they work
through problems and tackle new concepts, all while receiving immediate feedback and guidance.
The biggest advantage of Mathnasium@ home is flexibility. Parents can easily schedule sessions that fit their family’s routine, eliminating the need for travel. Students can log in from anywhere, whether at home or on the go, making it easier than ever to stay consistent with their learning.
Additionally, for families who want the best of both worlds, Mathnasium North Oxford offers a hybrid learning mode. This allows students to combine in-centre sessions with Mathnasium@home lessons. You can choose on a day-to-day basis whether to come into the centre or have your child join online— whatever works best for your schedule. This seamless combination ensures continuity and consistent progress, no matter where your child is. Students benefit from the familiarity of in-centre interactions while enjoying the convenience of online learning. This flexibility gives students control over their learning environment, which can help them feel more at ease and focused, especially when juggling busy extracurricular activities or family commitments.
Mathnasium@home and the hybrid option are perfect for families seeking to balance
convenience with quality education. Whether learning happens at home or in the centre, students will receive the same dedicated instruction, personalised learning plans, and measurable results that Mathnasium is known for.
Parents and students in Oxford who have chosen Mathnasium@home are already seeing fantastic results. “Mathnasium@home has been a game changer for us,” shares one parent. “My child is more confident in maths than ever before, and the ability to schedule sessions around our busy lifestyle has been a huge relief.”
Another family, who uses the hybrid mode, loves the flexibility it provides. “We like the option of coming into the centre when it suits us, but being able to do sessions from home means we never miss a beat. The continuity has really helped my son stay on top of his maths studies.”
