The NSPCC is calling on people to embrace green this Halloween to help raise vital funds to support the charity and its School’s Service.

You can be wicked at work, haunted at home or scary at school, during Halloween week (26 October to 31 October), anything goes as long as it’s green. The charity is asking people to host a ‘green’ activity with their local community, school or colleagues to raise money.

Why not host a Wicked the musical party or dress in green fancy dress? You could concoct green potions for drinks and only serve green food. Or why don’t you bake green cakes and sell them at school or to friends and neighbours?

Parents warned to show a healthy attitude towards alcohol

New Junior School being proposed for the Burnham area Due to the shortage of junior school places in the Burnham and Fulmer areas a proposal for a two form entry junior school is being submitted to the Department for Education (DfE) by a group of local teachers and parents. If successful, the new school will open in September 2017 and improve educational choice for the community.

With growing pressure on local school places, from increased birth rates and Crossrail attracting families to the Burnham area, it’s predicted current educational provisions will not satisfy the increasing demand for school places.

The new junior school will address both the current shortage at Key Stage 2, and help satisfy a demand for good school places in the future.

The location of the school will ultimately be determined by the DfE, but the group is happy to listen to suggestions from the community. The group will hold open evening meetings, and have produced a website (www.beechesjuniorschool.co.uk) to keep the community updated.

Alcohol education charity Drinkaware reveals that 44% of parents in the UK who drink in front of their child say they witness their children mimicking their drinking behaviour – such as saying ‘cheers’ or pretending to sip alcohol. Elaine Hindal, Chief Executive at Drinkaware, says: “We all know that our children like to play grown up and mimic our habits and mannerisms, from putting on makeup to pretending to drive the car. However it’s important to think about the other behaviours we may inadvertently pass on to our children”.

Often your child starting school for the first time can be just as daunting for the parent.

Liat Hughes-Joshi takes a humorous look at some of the errors parents make when their child first starts school.

10 School life mistakes to try and avoid:

Sweating the small stuff Try to not get obsessed with reading levels, who got the hardest spellings and the like. It won’t go on their CVs after all. As long as they’re enjoying school and learning, that’s what matters most.

Getting embroiled in school gate competitiveness Engaging with competitive parents is a lose-lose situation. If your child is ahead of theirs, they’ll hate you for it. If theirs has one up on yours, you’ll have to endure their smugness. Walk away or change the subject to something more interesting, like the weather.

Not helping at school…or doing so for the wrong reasons Volunteering in the classroom or for the Parent Teacher Association will help you make friends and feel part of the school community.

Freaking out about friendship fall-outs Reception children switch friends quicker than you can ask ‘who’s your best buddy now?’ It’s completely normal and bust-ups are quickly forgotten.

There’s a black hole in every single primary school into which children’s belongings fall, never to be seen again. If you want to maximise chances of getting lost uniform, pencil cases or shoes back, add their name to it all!

After a long and lovely summer holiday children often struggle to settle back into the school routine. For those starting school, simply adjusting to the everyday challenges can be a big culture shock.

Mette Theilmann from ParentingSuccess Coaching shares some wise words to help ease your child into the school routine and enable them to get the most out of the year academic year ahead:

1. Make sure they go to school happy, relaxed and confident in the morning: • Help your child to get organised the night before This will make the morning less chaotic, avoiding nagging, tears and guilt! The night before: get their uniform ready, homework in their book bags, PE kit packed, water bottle filed and snack in the fridge. I know it is so much easier and quicker to do it yourself, but try to help your child to become independent by ‘allowing’ them to get ready (with your support). Going prepared and organised to school will help them to fully focus on the day ahead!

• Bed time routine: Kids need sleep Have a clear routine that indicates when it is bedtime, the ‘tasks’ that need to be done leading up to it, and when they need to be done. Have a visual chart that is easy for the child to follow and for you to refer to! No screen-time at least 1 hour before bed, as this can interfere with their sleep patterns.

• Morning routine Agree a morning routine with your child.

As with the bedtime routine, have a clear and visual system that clearly shows what needs to be done and when so you all can get out of the door in a relaxed way.

• Make time for a healthy breakfast Eating a healthy breakfast together is not only a great way to start the day, but also provides energy.

2. Homework routine Make a plan of when, where and how the child will complete their homework. Get them involved and ask them when suits them, where do they like to do it and what works best for them.

3. Have time to listen Going back to school can be hard, so we need to be there to listen, when they have something to tell! Make sure you have at least 10 minutes of ‘Special-Time’ a day alone with your child, where you give them your full attention. This will give you a chance to learn more about your child’s school experiences, good and bad.

4. Make sure your child has some ‘head space’ every day A day at school can be pretty full-on, so it is important that they get some time to relax without pressure and expectations, just chill! What makes your child happy, relaxed and ‘recharges’ their batteries?

5. Don’t overdo the questions at the end of the day Rather than ask ‘what did you do at school today?’ which invites the answer ‘nothing’ or ‘can’t remember’, try ‘tell me 2 OK things that happen at school day’ or ‘what was the best part of your day today?’ This also helps them to focus on what went well and not merely the ‘bad’ part of school! Maybe you can start talking about your day and they will join in and tell you about their day!

Back to School Special HOW TO CHOOSE A SECONDARY SCHOOL

Autumn is school open day season. Before you go it’s worth doing your homework so you can make the most of your visit. By Rebecca James.

A

lthough you probably know a bit about the secondary schools in your area, an open day is a good opportunity to find out more. It’s wise to start looking when your child is in Year 5, especially if you have a choice of schools as you can then review next year with a clearer idea of what you’re looking for. Most schools offer a choice of times to visit.

Remember that while visiting on a normal school day is great for seeing the school in action, you won’t be able to talk to staff or pupils as much.

Before you go • Do your research It’s worth browsing the school’s website as this should be welcoming and informative. League tables and Ofsted reports are also useful, but remember you’re not on a level playing field if you compare a selective and non-selective school. When

looking at exam results, consider the pattern over the last three years for a thorough overview and, likewise, the last few years of leavers’ destinations.

• Listen to local opinion Talk to the right people – those who already have kids in senior school. While it’s important not to base your entire opinion on school-gate gossip the different views can present interesting contrasts, and if you really don’t hear about a bad word about a school that does indeed speak volumes.

• One size doesn’t fit all Remember that it’s about finding the right school for your child, consider whether your child will do best in a single sex or mixed school, as well as the how school’s size might affect them.

• Getting to school If your child isn’t able to cycle or walk, is there a school bus? And what will you do if they miss it – is there a back up or will they rely on lifts from you and, if so, how convenient is that? It’s also worth considering how much longer their school day will be with a journey tagged on at each end and how they’ll cope with this.

• It’s a family decision Do ask your child what they think and take them with you, it’s important they feel involved – you don’t want them starting a new school with the ‘I don’t want to be here’ attitude. Some parents initially visit the schools alone, if this leaves you with a particular school you’re not so sure about don’t take your child to the open day.

On the day • Don’t miss the presentation Most open days will include an address by the Headteacher, Governors and Head Boy or Girl. This offers a good insight into what the school is proud of and while it’s definitely important, don’t base your entire decision on it.

• Talk to the pupils The best ambassadors for a school are its pupils so take a guided tour and get them talking: do they seem happy and positive about their school and the teachers? Do they enjoy school? Would you like your child to be like them?

• Look at the work on display in the corridors and classrooms – is it interesting, colourful, exciting? Does it reflect a broad range of ability so every child feels valued? Are the classrooms and communal areas well looked after?

• Talk to the staff, your children will spend a lot of time with them. Are they enthusiastic? Positive? Compassionate? Watch interactions between the staff and pupils, and look at how they speak to each other. A warm and happy atmosphere can’t be faked.

• Ask about clubs, trips and extra-curricular activities, everything that will help your child develop into a well-rounded individual. If your child has any special interests in sport, music, art etc pay attention to those facilities as this can be crucial in helping you make a decision.

After visiting think about how you found the open day – was it organised, friendly and efficient, or chaotic and a bit haphazard? The organisation of an open day is often a good reflection on how the school is run. And, after all your research, don’t forget to trust your instincts.

Parent as a pupil for the day!

At Upton house School in Windsor, Thursday June 4 was a memorable day. Mr Ashley Ratcliffe became a pupil for the day. His two daughters, Jody and Holly, attend the school.

Complete in the school uniform with its felt cap and school shirt, Mr Ratcliffe enjoyed a drama workshop, an English lesson, an art class, French and lots of playtime with the children.

Mr Ratcliffe had bid on the opportunity to be a pupil as part of Upton’s charity fundraising for the Alexandra Devine Hospice.

This September, Godstowe Preparatory School in High Wycombe will open the doors to its brand new Early Years building.

Situated next to the Nursery, the new building features two new, bright and airy classrooms, cloakrooms and a kitchen for the Reception classes. Crazy Ideas Raising Crazy Amounts of Money Claires Court pupils’ support for charities grew this year, with the school councils from each site having strong views about who should benefit, with a total of over £11,500 being raised.

The girls and boys, from Nursery to Sixth Form, hosted a range of activities during what is known as 3for3 week (three sites/three charities). Through sponsored fancy dress walks, the making and selling of friendship bracelets, cake sales, beat the goalie, girls v. boys netball and a whole host of other fun activities, they raised an astonishing amount of money. The charities they chose to support, either because of a link to the School or because pupils felt it was a worthy local cause, were Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice Service, Julian Budd Kids in Sport, Thames Valley Adventure Playground, Rosie’s Rainbow Trust, Daisy’s Dream, Maidenhead Mencap and Diabetes UK. 100% Success at Highfield Prep School Year 6 at Highfield Prep School has had another successful academic year and 100% of the girls secured a place at their first choice of secondary school. Little Fishes goes digital Little Fishes Pre-School in Furze Platt Maidenhead has modernised its system of monitoring their children.

Education News St Piran’s School receives ‘Excellent’ rating

Eton End celebrates the Great Outdoors With the original philosophy of the Victorian educationalist Charlotte Mason in mind, Eton End held its first Outdoor Week last term. The school is very lucky to have six acres of land to explore and wanted to promote a respect for nature and an understanding of how to care for the environment and enjoy the outside world.

The pupils enjoyed all the activities and gained many new skills; orienteering, building open fires for cooking, den building, mini-beast hunts and creating bug hotels. They are waiting now to see which creatures have moved into the hotel! The den building was fantastic. Once the children had created the frame of the den they used branches and logs to make the walls.

They are now enjoying playing in the new den area.

The younger children were treated to story time before setting off to make fairy dells. The only limit was their imagination.

BROADENING YOUR CHILDREN’S HORIZONS Natalie Trice discusses how to get the balance right when selecting activities for your children.

W

ith the new school year beginning, as well as labelling new uniforms, seeing if the PE kits still fit and traipsing around the shops for that elusive Minecraft lunch box, many parents are deciding which extra-curricular activities, clubs and classes to sign their children up for.

Keeping the kids busy will stop them getting bored and after-school clubs and classes are great for ensuring children are stimulated. There’s also no doubt a couple of well-chosen activities can be great for covering areas that schools can’t, as well as giving kids extra skills, interests and boosting self-confidence.

When I was growing up, a weekly session of Brownies or drama club sufficed, now there’s an entire industry dedicated to afterschool and weekend classes. From cheerleading and gymnastics to choir, French, wall-climbing and running, the list is endless and growing year by year, so it’s important to make sure you pick wisely and consider your children’s own interests, too.

With my own sons, swimming is an essential life skill, Cubs gets them out in the fresh air and learning to play African drums is something they might not have been able to try if it wasn’t on offer at school.

However, I try not to overload them with too many activities as I feel it’s key to strike a balance between giving children adventures and opportunities, and having

some downtime. A healthy balance of two or three activities a week that are really enjoyed, plus time with family and friends and homework thrown into the mix, seems about right for us.

David Shandley, Deputy Head (Academic) of Newland College in Chesham, told me: ‘It’s important that children and young adults are given a chance to develop in a non-classroom environment and participation in clubs can help them to achieve this goal. I have personally witnessed shy and introverted children come out of their shells whilst taking part in activities such as indoor climbing and gaining new confidence in themselves, which invariably had a positive impact on their social standing in their class.’

At the end of the day, we all do what we believe is best for our children and, like so many things in life, everything in moderation is a good rule of thumb.

• Early years: Art, signing, singing or preschool music and movement class, with an emphasis on play, is ideal.

• Infant school: A low-key activity or something that isn’t covered at school – singing, music, dancing, swimming or a specific sport.

• Junior school: As tests loom, adding an educational class if your child is struggling can be a good confidence boost.

Bellydancing school launches new local classes The Rachel Bennett School of Belly dance is launching new belly dancing classes this September in Maidenhead, Windsor and Wokingham.

The classes are taught by Rachel Bennett's team of sparkling teachers, who can't wait to bring out your inner belly dance disco diva! Rachel Bennett is the Principal and a full-time professional belly dancer, experienced fully qualified teacher and mummy.

HOW TO AVOID MORNING MAYHEM! Professor Matt Sanders, founder of the Triple P Positive Parenting Program® has some top tips to beat the early morning stress.

F

or many families the morning rush hour is the most stressful part of the day. Everyone is trying to get ready, the clock is ticking, and it can feel as though the kids are doing everything they can to make you late. Here’s how to make sure everyone gets out the door on time this term.

1. To avoid last-minute panics get as much ready the night before as you can and go to bed at a reasonable hour so you’ll wake early enough without wanting to hit the snooze button.

2. Get yourself ready before you wake the kids up.

3. If your children aren’t too messy, it will save time to ask them to get dressed before breakfast.

4. Don’t put the television on as it’ll only slow everyone down. Reserve it as a reward for when everyone’s ready, and only if there’s time to spare.

Parenting or nagging them to hurry up as they need to take responsibility. Reward charts are a good incentive here, with a star if they’re ready before they need to be.

Often it will only take a two-week period of beating the clock before the rewards and the clock can be phased out. Remember to always praise any achievements in learning better organisation.

With a little preparation and thought, the stress of getting out on time can be reduced and those morning rush hours can become at least a little calmer.

5. Let your children know ahead of time when you’ll be leaving so they know what they need to do and by when.

6.Younger children can learn the importance of organisation by doing things for themselves. Teaching children to get dressed by themselves is a chance to practise their independence and it also saves you time.

7.You may like to try the ‘beat the clock’ game.Your kids’ goal is to be ready before the alarm clock goes off. Tell them exactly what tasks they must do to ‘be ready’ and make sure you allow a reasonable amount of time. Avoid giving repeated instructions

BANGS, BANGERS AND A BRILLIANT BASH – SPARKLING IDEAS FOR A BRILLIANT BONFIRE NIGHT

I see no reason, why gunpowder treason, should ever, ever cost a lot…

Bonfire night is fast approaching, so check out these tips on how to make hosting your own event go with a bang. (Or check Families’ What’s On for fantastic fireworks displays!)

Food Hearty and toasty is what you want. A hot cauldron of soup is easy to serve outside in mugs and will keep hands warm too. Children love hot dogs or you could try browning traditional sausages on the flames of your bonfire, cook jacket potatoes in foil or toast marshmallows on sticks.

If you’ve got tinies, lighting the barbecue is a less stressful way of cooking outside. Top tip for sausages: boil them in a saucepan for ten minutes, which ensures they are cooked through (and takes out some of the fat) before draining, drying and sizzling them in the flames. Parkin cake, a sticky confection of oatmeal, ginger, and treacle, is a traditional food from the north of England to eat as the guy goes up in flames (it’s easy to make and there are lots of recipes online).

Toffee apples are fun to make with kids and bonfire-baked apples taste and smell wonderful too. Cut the top off a cooker, dig out the core down to about halfway and fill it with a spicy mix of brown sugar, sultanas, cinnamon and nutmeg. Wrap it in foil and cook for twenty minutes.

Guy Fawkes Night reminding children, and grown-ups, the rules about going near fireworks and holding sparklers away from yourself – and others.

Glowsticks are great alternative to sparklers for very young children.

Watch out for noisy big bangers if you have little ones, but older children love a rocket or something noisy.

Fireworks-forum.org.uk says supermarket multiboxes are fine for young children for a basic selection as well as sparklers, but advises going elsewhere if you are seeking something more special. “You think you're getting a bargain with a box that contains 15 items and only costs a tenner. But did you know each item is probably a little farty fountain and if you spent that £10 on a bigger multishot barrage you could get something that looks amazing. Always remember you get what you pay for.” It lists specialist manufacturers and retailers on its website. Try astoundedfireworks.com for discounts on some rockets and some firework display kits at half price. It also sells eco-friendly sky lanterns without wires.

Visit a bonfire The Cookham Scouts Group will be holding their popular annual bonfire and fireworks display on Formosa Meadow, Mill Lane, Cookham on Saturday 7 November 2015. Gates open from 5.30pm, bonfire lighting is at 6pm and the fireworks start at 7pm.

This year Ascot Racecourse (ascot.co.uk) is holding a United House Group Raceday and Fireworks Spectacular on Saturday October 31. It’s the first meeting of the new 2015/2016 Jumps season and features the £100,000 United House Gold Cup Chase over three miles. Racing is followed by one of the region's largest Fireworks spectaculars.You can also purchase separate Fireworks tickets from the Ascot Round Table.

Drinks No cold beers, that won’t warm your cockles. Squash made with boiled water (known as hot ‘bina in my house) is a nice drink for children. Or you could try mulled cider or heat up some apple juice – lovely on a chilly autumn night. Appley things just seem right for an autumn celebration.

A steaming mug of hot chocolate, especially with whipped cream and marshmallows is also gorgeous. Buy whipping cream and whip it until it’s still slightly liquid for just the right texture.

I do sometimes buy those Anchor squirty cream cans (a bit overprocessed but no worse than most pizzas) as my two boys love to make their own hot choc, piling it high and adding chocolate sprinkles on the top. And you could add a splash of brandy for the grown-ups.

COPING WITH CHILDHOOD ECZEMA Skin complaints are common in childhood, Melanie Capper explains.

T

he skin is our body’s largest organ. We absorb up to 70% of what we put onto it and pass unwanted waste out through it.

Sometimes the natural functioning of the skin can break down causing irritating or debilitating skin problems, particularly in children.

Although most are harmless, it’s always important to check with your GP. One of the most common skin problems in children is eczema.

Eczema is an inflammatory skin condition, which leads to dryness, itchiness, redness and in more severe cases, cracking of the skin. In children, it’s found mostly on the cheeks, elbows and knees, while adults tend to get it on the inside surfaces of the elbows and knees.

Scratching should be avoided as it can lead to infections due to the introduction of bacteria.

The most common form of eczema is ‘atopic’. This mainly affects children, but can persist into adulthood. Common causes of eczema include genetics, food sensitivity, dietary imbalances, stress and environmental factors such as dust mites, moulds, pollen, pets and household chemicals.

Unfortunately there’s no cure for eczema, and although a lot of children do tend to grow out of it, while suffering it’s important to manage the symptoms and avoid itching.Your GP may prescribe an emollient for dry skin and, if this is not effective, a topical corticosteroid. However, prolonged use of topical corticosteroids can have adverse side effects and should be used with caution, particularly on children’s delicate skin. Providing there’s no infection, occlusive dressings and wraps are also sometimes used to prevent the skin from drying out and therefore reduce itching. If the skin has become infected, antibiotics may be prescribed.

It is also possible to use other methods to manage eczema. These can include analysing a child’s diet and avoiding possible sensitivities (such as eggs, cows’ milk, soya, wheat, fish and nuts), detecting and avoiding the environmental triggers listed above, and trying to reduce the stresses, which may be exacerbating symptoms. Some may also choose to use a more natural emollient to help to keep the skin well moisturised and reduce irritating symptoms.

HANDLING HEAD LICE!

Head lice are a problem faced by many parents, including myself, so I have lots of knowledge and practical advice to share.

The Facts • Head lice are common.

• They do not prefer either clean or dirty hair.

• They cling to hair on the scalp or neck and crawl around the head.

• They don’t jump or fly.

• Their eggs are called nits. They stick to the head and are small and droplet-shaped.

Eggs take 7 to10 days to hatch and then 7 to10 days to mature into adults.

• Head lice only survive 2 to 3 days away from a human head.

• They are spread only from head-to-head contact, not from pillows or hair brushes.

Symptoms • Itching • Small itchy pink bumps around the edge of the scalp which are insect bites • Crusting of the scalp • Enlarged glands in the neck • Repeated yellow crusting skin infections • Unpleasant odour

Getting Rid of Head Lice The different methods are: insecticides, noninsecticide shampoos and wet combing.

There is no medical evidence of the effectiveness of Tea Tree Oil. Some head lice are resistant to insecticides, so most effective is to combine use of these with wet combing. Treat the whole household at once to avoid reinfection.

Wet Combing The live insects (but not their eggs) can be removed with a fine-toothed ‘nit comb’ from the chemist. Wet the hair, apply any conditioner and comb through all of the hair in sections, which can take 20 to 30 minutes in long hair. Wash the conditioner off and repeat. In between each stroke, you need to wipe the comb on a tissue to check for lice.

Repeat wet combing every 2 to 3 days until no lice have been seen for 10 days. The aim is remove all the lice as they hatch, before they have chance to mature and hatch eggs themselves.

Alternatively, there may be no symptoms and you may find lice only by parting the hair systematically and combing through with a fine-toothed nit comb.

Insecticides and Non-Insecticide Shampoos These products kill live lice (but not eggs) by a variety of means.You should only use them

Heath if you find live lice. The treatment must be repeated a week later to kill eggs. Wet comb in between treatments to remove any eggs that may have hatched.

Products should be rubbed into dry hair, allowed to dry naturally and then left on for 8 to 12 hours before washing off with shampoo. The instructions may advise quicker removal of the products, but they are more effective if left longer. However, watch out for any skin irritation or worsening of asthma caused by the chemicals.

With repeated use, lice can become resistant to insecticides containing permethrin, malathion and phenothrin. There are alternative non-insecticide shampoos which contain deimeticone and isopropyl myristate (Full Marks Solution), to which lice cannot become resistant and which work by suffocating them. However, clinical trials have not yet been done to prove that noninsecticide shampoos are as effective as other treatments.

Dimeticone is left on overnight but isopropyl myristate need only be left on for 10 minutes. If you are pregnant, discuss the best method of treatment with your GP. So if you find head lice in your little darling’s hair, you are now armed for the battle to get rid of them!

BUMP ON BOARD: How to prevent back pain

Taking care of your body is essential during pregnancy, not just for your child, but also for your own wellbeing long-term.

Hormonal and physical changes may sometimes have a negative impact, which if ignored can cause problems later on. Rachel Bromley, Nuffield Health Senior Physiotherapist and Clinical Specialist Lead for Women’s Health, gives advice on how to help prevent some of the most common issues affecting pregnant and post-natal women: latter stages of pregnancy and after delivery.

Try to plan ahead and arrange items so that you’re not straining to reach them. For example, moving plates to a lower shelf in the kitchen, adapting your work station to accommodate your growing bump and making sure that everything you need to change baby’s nappy can be reached without having to lean or bend too much.”

Here are her top tips: Stay symmetrical “Pelvic discomfort (Pelvic Girdle Pain) and lower back pain are very common issues which affect many pregnant women. To help prevent pain in these areas, try to remain symmetrical so that additional weight from your developing bump is spread evenly and doesn’t put pressure on specific joints. Stand up straight to engage your stomach muscles, use two shopping bags instead of one and sit down to dress the lower half of your body rather than standing on one leg. It may take longer but your body will thank you.”

Engage in gentle exercise “Staying active can help to prevent ailments such as back pain during pregnancy. If you lead an active life then it is beneficial to continue to exercise, within your own limits, into your pregnancy. If you are new to exercise, consult your GP before you start.

Gentle activities, such as swimming or walking, can help you to keep fit and active during your pregnancy.”

Spread the load “As your bump gets bigger try to spread your work or home activities out across the day, and allow plenty of rest time in between.

If you’re out of the house for long periods of time, stop off at a coffee shop or relax in a nearby park to take the pressure off your back and pelvis.”

Watch the toddlers!

“If you already have young children then avoid lifting them as much as possible to prevent putting pressure on your back, pelvis and joints. Try not to carry them on one hip and, if they are mobile, encourage them to climb into their own car seat or up onto the sofa with you if they want a hug. At bath time, kneel down by the side of the bath rather than bending over it to avoid over-stretching and twisting.”

Practice your pelvic floor exercises “A well-functioning pelvic floor is very important both before and after delivery and regular pelvic floor exercises play an important part in helping your body to recover after pregnancy and birth. If you’re not sure what you should be doing, consult a specialist women’s health physiotherapist who can provide one-to-one help and advice.”

Carry out front “Moving a new born baby about is no easy task! Carry your baby on your front so that the weight is evenly balanced and you’re not putting pressure on one side of your body.

Try to limit the amount of time you spend carrying a car seat or change bag and regularly switch arms. Give yourself plenty of space to secure the car seat and move around the vehicle rather than leaning and twisting which can cause discomfort.”

Seek help “It is normal for the body to change during pregnancy and after having a baby. However, if you are experiencing issues such as pain or bladder weakness, which impact on your personal wellbeing, you should seek help as early as you can. These issues are common, but should never be considered normal and can be corrected through a personalised exercise or physiotherapy programme.”

Mums Who Mean Business Maidenhead mum of three, Sarah El-Hawary, used her own experience of getting fit after having her kids as the inspiration for her Personal Training business.

Who are you and where do you live?

My name is Sarah El-Hawary and I’m a busy mum of 3 young boys. I live in Maidenhead and run a business called Go Figure! Personal Training.

Why did you set up the business / why have you changed career?

I originally worked as a nurse, and to be honest I loved my job. However it became clear as we began to raise our children, that three children under the age of four years and nursing shift work were not compatible. I reluctantly left nursing to raise my children. Throughout my pregnancies I used exercise to help me prepare for my deliveries and get back to my pre-baby shape. I had my first baby in 2002 and at the time there was very little information out there for pregnant mums who wanted to exercise.

Even the top trainers, who tended to be men did not really understand a woman’s body, the changes it goes through, the demands placed on her by a new baby and how one minute they can be deep in the middle of a busy career and the next minute they are at home with a tiny baby feeling completely overwhelmed. I had the knowledge to be able to exercise safely during and after my pregnancies, and my love of exercise lead me into a career in fitness.

What did you use to do?

I remember training with my own Personal Trainer (male), thinking………. I can do this, but actually I can do this with the knowledge of three pregnancies, (a tough 1st delivery with failed epidural, a home birth and a emergency c/section under GA, not to mention, mastitis, chest infection, and a baby with reflux), my nursing experience and the fact that I am a woman. To me it felt like a natural progression between nursing and being a mum, and so I became a Personal Trainer.

What inspired you to set up the business?

Working in a gym was never going to be an option for me once I qualified as a Personal Trainer. I slowly built my business around my children. I began with one Circuit Class, this brought in a few clients and from there through word of mouth and, some hard work business began to grow. I have been running my own business for eight years now. During this time I have continued to learn new and improved methods of exercise. There has also been a huge move in the fitness industry to understand not only the body in general but the importance of looking at a more holistic approach to exercise prescription.

What are your plans for the future?

About 18 months ago I began to incorporate Myofascial Release within my Pilates classes and exercise prescription. The response from my clients has been overwhelming positive. I am currently looking at designing a new class called Myolates, which will focus on more release work to benefit individuals with muscular-skeletal conditions and those recovering from injury. In the mean time I will continue to juggle my job and being a full time mum, knowing that my children are getting the best of both worlds.

Who you are and where do you live?

My name is Stephanie de Jong and I run the Music with Mummy franchise in Windsor, teaching music classes for babies and preschool children with their parent or carer. I live in nearby Bracknell.

Why did you set up the business/or why have you changed career?

About a year after my son was born we moved from west London to Bracknell to have more space for our growing family.

My maternity leave was ending and my salary from working at a charity would not cover the cost of childcare and commuting to London. Spending time with my son, especially in these early years of his life, is important to me so I quit my job in order to be his primary caregiver.

In the last few years since he was born, we have attended every baby and toddler class that I could find. Music with Mummy has been our favourite, not only because of the bonding experience we’ve had singing together but also because he has gained musical and life skills while having fun in the classes.

While still a stay at home mum, I helped to start and run a new and extremely popular toddler group with Jackie Faerber, who has been running the Music with Mummy classes in Windsor for the last 15 years. Knowing of my musical skills and education and my love for children, Jackie asked if I would consider taking over the franchise.

Teaching Music with Mummy classes has enabled me to bring my passion for musical expression to my work with children. It's such fun and a real privilege to share these precious days with parents and their children. I wake up every day happy to go off to work, to a day spent singing, dancing and laughing.

Music with Mummy also allows flexible working hours so I can maximize the time I get to spend with my son when he's not at pre-school.

What inspired you to set up the business?

Teaching Music with Mummy classes brings together my passion for music, love of children, and educational experience. The teaching material is excellent and unlike many other music franchises I didn't have to pay thousands of pounds up front before I could get started.

We keep our classes small and personal which ensures that as a teacher I can give each little one lots of individual attention, therefore helping their confidence, speech and listening skills. It also gives parents a great opportunity to come together and take part in an activity where they are interacting with their child while having fun and giving their little ones a great start in life.

What are your plans for the future?

Music with Mummy is a family friendly business that I can grow as my son grows.

So as he graduates from pre-school to "big school" I can increase the number of days and hours that I can teach. What did you use to do?

I studied clarinet performance at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University in the U.S. and have sung lead and back-up vocals in a number of bands through the years. I tutored school children while studying for my master's degree and after graduating I moved to China where I taught at a primary school. I also worked for many years as an international project manager and product manager in the telecommunications industry. Since moving to the U.K. in 2005, I have worked in the charity sector.
