Mindfulness Tips for Mums

A

s a mum of three children, who runs her own business and also donates time to the local community, I know that having a full life can be rewarding but also exhausting and not always that good for our mental health. For me, it can be the little everyday irritants that push me over the edge and I find mindfulness helpful in keeping my stress levels under control.

with your experience. Feel the water running down your back, smell the shampoo, give yourself a short scalp massage and gently soap your body. It won’t take any longer than your usual shower, but it allows you to have a few minutes of relaxation for yourself before the “storm.”

Mindfulness is about focusing on the moment and you can easily weave it in to your daily activities, without having to make time for it. It can be practised in many ways, from meditation through to painting. As a busy mum, the practices help me cope with everyday life.

The Mindful To-Do-List It is easy to be overwhelmed by incessant to-do-lists that are full of “I should do” and “I have to” which are mostly unexamined claims stemming from our attempts to be perfect. Just sit with your list for a moment and question each item. Would the world really come to an end if you were to remove a few things from it?

Take a Breathing Break Whenever you feel you are having a challenging moment with your children, take a breathing break to calm down and clear your mind. Take a few conscious inhalations through your nostrils, breathing in deeply all the way into your abdomen and exhaling as slowly as you possibly can.

Mindful Eating When was the last time you really tasted and appreciated your food? Start each meal with two to three mindful bites, smelling the food, looking at it and chewing it slowly. You could also make this a family experience and ask everyone to use their senses to describe what they eat.

Morning Shower The morning shower is a fantastic opportunity for a few minutes of mindfulness. You are already taking this time out, so, instead of making mental to do lists, try to be fully present

Mindful Walking Every time you walk outside with your children, leave your phone in your bag or at home and be present with the process of walking. Feel your feet touching the ground, notice the rays

of sunshine on your face and the wind playing with your hair. Be present in the moment.

Say Yes To No Don’t say ‘yes’ to everything. In order to be able to continue giving, you need to be mindful of when you need refuelling and at what point your body needs to rest. Sometimes resting is the most productive thing to do.

Count Your Blessings The mind always focuses on what’s next, without being fully able to appreciate and rejoice in what you have at any given time.

Early Years Why Do Babies Move in the Womb?

A

ccording to a new study, scientists at Trinity College Dublin have found that babies move around so much in the womb because they are trying to develop strong bones and joints.

By analysing chicken and mouse embryos, the researchers determined that movement helps stimulate “molecular interactions” that ultimately turn cells and tissues of an embryo into functional bones and joints.

The research also revealed that if babies don’t move often enough in utero, they may

suffer from brittle bones or abnormal joint development. Just like all humans, babies need their joints to be covered in “smooth, lubricated” cartilage so they can bend properly.

Researchers at Imperial College London have revealed that the force produced by foetal kicking at 20 to 35 weeks can reach 10lbs, twice that which it takes to hit a tennis ball at a speed greater than 100mph!

Early Years Care Better for Children’s Development

A

study funded by the Department of Education has found that the provision of early education to children aged 2 has a

significant positive effect on their language and socio-emotional development when they reach age 3. This is regardless of their family’s level of advantage.

The report found that no matter how rich and how high the quality of a child’s home environment is or if early childcare is provided by relatives, friends or non-Ofsted registered carers, it was more beneficial for a 2 year old’s development to have spent time in early education and care in a group-based setting, such as a nursery or playgroup, or with a registered childminder.

Interestingly, the report found that increased time spent with registered childminders at age 2 is associated with a better outcome in terms of verbal development for children at age 3 than time spent in group-based settings. However, spending time in group or childminder settings is associated with similar amounts of benefit for social and behavioural outcomes.

The Study of Early Education and Development (SEED) is following the development of almost 6,000 children in England from ages 2 to 7.

Preparing Your Child for School If your child is starting school in September, you may be wondering how best to prepare them for this big new adventure!

Firstly, don’t worry if they can’t read a word or write their own name. The ability to interact, communicate and exercise a degree of independence is actually far more important than reading or writing skills when a child starts school. In fact, research shows a link between strong personal, social and emotional skills in Reception and higher levels of attainment in the future. So if you want to strengthen your child’s skills in these areas, here are some tips.

Independence The aim is for children to be responsible for themselves, their belongings and their actions at school. Help your child learn to get dressed, put on their coats/shoes, go to the toilet, tidy away toys and select their own activity resources.

Communication and Language Research demonstrates that competent speakers develop into competent readers and writers; without competent spoken language, learning to read and write is more difficult. Language allows children to interact with the world. Being able to communicate their message effectively is satisfying and develops their esteem and self-confidence.

Model good spoken language, with correct pronunciation of sounds, and encourage your child to speak in full sentences using an expanding vocabulary. Talk to your child about their experiences and feelings throughout the day and develop a positive ethos around the importance of communicating and expressing feelings, of any kind.

This will have multiple benefits

(including knowing how your child is really feeling and maintaining an open and trusting rapport), both now and in the future

Sharing and Interaction The more opportunities your child gets to interact and learn how to share and take turns, the less of a shock it will be when he or she starts school! However, expect this to be an on-going process. Allow your child lots of opportunities to play with siblings and organise lots of play dates. If disagreements occur between children, talk to them about how to resolve issues, modelling language and behaviour which gives them strategies and words to prevent or resolve disagreements in the future.

Respect for Behavioural Boundaries At school, behavioural expectations and boundaries are likely to include: • Listening the first time they are asked to pay attention • Keeping hands/feet to themselves • Sharing and taking turns • Looking after things • Tidying away • Being kind to others

You can reinforce these expectations at home by teaching children to respect themselves, their actions and the feelings of others.

Physical (Gross and Fine Motor Skills) All activities require some sort of physicality, whether it be large (gross) or small (fine) movements.

Gross motor skills are developed when hopping, skipping, running, jumping, galloping, balancing, pedalling a bike, using a scooter, climbing, throwing, catching, and kicking a ball. Varying the speed and direction of movement activities also develops spatial awareness. Your child can have fun developing fine motor skills at home with every day activities such as using pegs and scissors, bead threading, button fastening, moulding play-dough, and painting.

Exploring and Investigating Often the most effective learning occurs when a child is left to his own devices, without nicely-prepared resources and prescriptive instructions about

how to do something. Make a conscious effort to step back and allow your child the opportunity to use his initiative and develop his creative, imaginative and innovative skills through exploring, investigating and initiating his own learning. Children learn by exploring, trying out and adapting ideas for themselves and taking ownership. Present your child with a large cardboard box (and the opportunity to access other resources/toys). See what he or she does with it. In the latter stages of his or her ‘creation’ you may wish to step in to play too, but allow your child to initiate the direction of the play and conversation.

All the above skills can be naturally weaved into your everyday lives.

Enjoy and treasure these precious last few months with your child at home, and keep the above tips in mind to promote a positive start to your child’s school life.

The Lasting Magic of Theatre

M

ost children remember their first trip to the theatre.

Mine was a school outing to see David Wood’s wonderful environmental musical, The SeeSaw Tree at Sadler’s Wells in the late 1980s. I can still clearly remember the opening scene, the lovely music and voting to decide how the story ends. It was a brilliant production and one which will stay with me forever.

For me the excitement of going to the theatre as a child has never worn off. I recall trips to the West End in my teenage years where I was terrified by the Woman in Black, totally gripped by An Inspector Calls and besotted with Blood Brothers.

In 2016 I was working in New York.

I walked up and down Broadway every night, gazing up in awe at all the magnificent theatres, boasting famous shows, many of which had been running for years and years.

I’d pick up a rush ticket each day and see everything I could. The Carole King musical Beautiful was most definitely the highlight for me.

Seeing our students at Dramacube walk into the theatre, brimming with excitement and enthusiasm,

reminds me of my early experiences and I feel privileged to be sharing these moments with them. Of course, our students are not arriving at the box office to watch a show but at the stage door to perform!

I have enjoyed the buzz of working in theatre for over 20 years and I believe that providing our young actors with the opportunity to work in professional/purposebuilt theatres with lighting, sound, microphones, costume and set gives them a unique experience.

Taking a performing arts class is hugely valuable, but nothing quite compares to being part of a fullscale production and embarking on that wonderful journey from the first audition to the opening night.

Fly through history at Brooklands this summer

From the earliest string, wood and fabric flying machines through two wars, into the jet age and to Concorde, this unique heritage is told through the stories of the people who worked and flew at the site, which at one point had 14,000 workers in its factories.

he incredible history of racing, speed and flight through most of the 20th Century is waiting to be discovered at Brooklands Museum this summer though a non-stop programme of activities for all ages.

built race track as the Brooklands Car Rides Team take passengers up the hill climb and along the steep banked track. If flying is more your thing, then you can take a virtual supersonic ‘flight’ on board Concorde with a fabulous Kids’ Tour expertly ‘piloted’ by your Concorde steward.

Open every day and included in the entry price is the Brooklands’ Aircraft Factory, a fantastic new exhibition that everyone is talking about; recently winning a Museums and Heritage Award for best new permanent exhibition. Housed inside an original WWII hangar, you will find giant sections of aircraft on assembly lines, interactive work areas where you can try some of the techniques yourself and make your own metal aircraft to take home. The centre piece is the famous Wellington Bomber, a giant aircraft that actually flew in the War and was salvaged and came back to Brooklands for restoration.

Back in the Clubhouse, which still has its distinctive green dome on top, you can walk through some of the period rooms and really feel the glamour from the speedy 1930s created by the Bentley Boys and Speed Queens, the rich and famous and Royalty.

This is also where you’ll find the Sunbeam Café for a fuel stop during your visit. Lastly, you can try one of three different simulator rides in the 4D Theatre taking you round race tracks or on an aerobatic display with the Red Arrows.

On your way out, you will find it hard not to find something from the Museum Shop to remind you of your visit; a unique pack of Brooklands Top Trumps, a model of Concorde or one of the many books, toys and DVDs all relating to this fantastic place where you’re guaranteed to learn something and be amazed at the same time!

Summer Days Out

hile our children are looking forward to the summer holidays, many of us parents are wondering how we are going to juggle work, play and activities within our budget in a way that works for the whole family. If you’re short on ideas, we have some ideas that won’t break the bank!

Britain has an amazing array of museums and entry is often free or by donation. Head to London for one of the ‘Big 3’: the Science Museum (www.sciencemuseum. org.uk), the Natural History Museum (www.nhm.ac.uk) or the V&A (www.vam.ac.uk). Our family favourite is the National History Museum. You’ll need at least half a day as there are thousands of exhibits ranging from dinosaurs, to volcanicity, to evolution. Don’t miss the skeleton of the Blue Whale in the Hintze Hall, which is truly majestic. If you’ve visited these already, try a lesser-known one, like The Cartoon Museum (www. cartoonmuseum.org) in Holborn.

Entry is £7 for adults and £3 for children.

Kingston Museum (www.kingston. gov.uk/museum) is a great free museum to visit and children

can follow the trail around the galleries or get arty in the Creative Corner with a variety of self-led activities. Every Friday there is a craft and story session for under 5s and in the school holidays there are various craft sessions and workshops. Another free local museum is Chertsey Museum (www.chertseymuseum.org) which has many drop-in and bookable craft and story-based workshops inspired by the museum’s various exhibitions.

This summer, the Museum of Richmond (www. museumofrichmond.com) is hosting Prehistoric Arts and Crafts workshops (various dates from 24 July to 24 August) for five to eleven-year-olds. Each prebookable workshop costs £5.50 and will cover a topic, including Roman mosaics, the Anglo Saxons and Viking runes; at the end of the session little ones will have made something topic related to take home.

If you are looking for something a little different then the London Museum of Water & Steam (www. waterandsteam.org.uk) is a good place to visit. Here you can learn about London’s watery past, take a

ride on a steam train and have fun in the splash zone. During selected dates this summer (from 26 July to 17 August) entry for children is free.

If you visit Tower Bridge (www. towerbridge.org.uk)this summer, you can also visit the exhibition with a new family activity pass (family tickets usually start at £15.30) which gives you free

access to family activity days for six months. Activity days give families a chance to step inside the Bridge to experience the Glass Walkways, exhibitions and atmospheric Victorian Engine Rooms while exploring its fascinating history and engineering feats through soundscapes, storytelling and art activities.

Rained in or at home for the day?

Have a Kitchen Disco

Get the children to choose a playlist on Spotify, or from your music collection and have a kitchen dance-off. You could also get glow sticks and neon face paint and turn it into a glow party.

Make a Play in a Day

Dig out the dressing up and create a play or a Britain’s Got Talent-style show.

Create a Smoothie

Buy some yummy fresh fruit and get your children to design fruit smoothies. They could come up with a name for their new concoctions and design some packaging for them too.

Learn a New Skill

Encourage the kids to surf the web for educational reasons and research a new skill they could learn like coding, plaiting hair, or juggling. YouTube is great for this but ensure parental settings are turned on!

Have a Nerf War

Get the neighbours involved and stock up on ammunition; kids love to do this in the house or garden.

Days Out Giant highs at Kew’s Temperate House

his summer, visitors to the newly reopened Temperate House at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew are in for a treat as Cirque Bijou conjures up a breathtaking aerial spectacular.

Celebrating 250 years of circus performing in the UK and inspired by the magnificent structure of the Temperate House, these inimitable show makers have created Harmonic (weekends and bank holidays until 2 September), an unforgettable production that will have you gasping in awe as the performers quite literally swing from the rafters.

Harmonic is a one-of-a-kind visual spectacular blending aerial performance with a unique musical score by composer and cellist Rob Lewis. Using the greatest glasshouse in the world as its backdrop, this 20-minute show conjures up thoughts of living in

harmony with nature as it explores the themes of diversity in science, society and nature, focussing on how plants and humans interact and rely on each other for survival.

If you are looking for something a little more down to earth, then a guided tour from conservation giant, Gnomus is perfect (21 July to 2 September). Little ones will love this larger-than-life puppet who is eager to share his knowledge as he guides them through the world’s temperate lands on a story-led walking adventure, through the glasshouse’s ten thousand plus plants, sharing interesting tales about this amazing plant collection.

Summer Fun at Bocketts Farm Enjoy a great day out at Bocketts Farm in Leatherhead this summer (21 July to 2 September) with a full programme of fun activities!

Jurassic Adventure at RHS Wisley

Take a step back in time this summer at RHS Garden Wisley, near Woking and unearth the secrets of the land that time forgot in Jurassic Discovery (21 July to 2 September).

Plants were vital to the survival of the dinosaurs most commonly associated

with this age and visitors will be able to discover the descendants of some of those early plants with the family-friendly activities.

Children will love the Jurassic-themed activities, where willow and metal dinosaur sculptures will help set the scene for their very own pre-historic detective adventure featuring a ‘fossil’ dig and a Jurassic discovery trail. Each week, arts and crafts activities will include gingko and fern leaf printing, ‘sow and grow’ and shadow puppet-making workshops.

For something a little different, visit Arts Fest (14 to 15 July) which is celebrating 250 years of the circus. There’s something for everyone, with exciting performances, circus workshops, music, craft stalls and demonstrations from the Surrey Guild of Craftsmen.

If you love Birds of Prey flying displays, then a visit on 4 and 5 August (11am and 2pm) is a must. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet these stunning birds up close and watch in wonder as they perform their incredible agility displays.

For those of you visiting on a Friday afternoon (6 July to 31 August, 1pm to 3pm) be sure to take part in Flavoursome Fridays! Come and taste a selection of seasonal fruits and vegetables grown at Wisley, from strawberries, raspberries, redcurrants and blueberries to cucumbers, tomatoes, sugar snaps and sweetcorn.

Be inspired to grow particular varieties at home and pick up some tips on cultivation from the RHS team at the same time.

Knights & Princesses School at Hever Castle 21 July – 27 August Throughout the summer holidays kids can experience what it was like to grow up and serve in a royal household in medieval times at Hever Castle’s Knights & Princesses School.

Suitable for children ages 6-12 (approximately), these free classes last for around 40 minutes and take place daily at 11:30am, 12:30, 2pm, 3pm and 4pm. Children are encouraged to come in costume to really get into the spirit of their training session.

Knights will learn how to prepare and protect their armour and discover the best way to arm and disarm their master before battle. Princesses are shown the correct way to give a proper and perfect curtsey.

At the end of each session, children take part in a fun Have a Go Jousting activity before receiving their ‘Knight School Certificate’ and being officiated as knights and princesses of Hever.

Knights & Princesses School takes place daily from 21 July – 27 August and is included in normal Hever Castle admission rates; spaces should be booked on arrival at the Information Centre.
