The three main skills in learning to write are the physical ability to make marks on paper, knowing that print conveys meaning and knowing what to write. Before children start making marks on paper and learning to write, they need to strengthen their gross and fine motor skills. But how? READ MORE

Meet the Head Interview with Mr Alistair MJ Lyttle, Headmaster of West House School and Nursery.

Meet the Head

Special feature

West House is a preparatory day school for boys between the ages of 4 and 11, with the co-educational Nursery caring for children from twelve months. How long have you been headmaster of West House? Since 2004. I joined the teaching staff in 1996, so 2021 was my 25th year at the school. In what way is West House different from other schools? When a pupil joins the school, their family becomes part of the West House Family. A life-long connection is made. We recognise the things that matter, such as teaching our pupils how to be kind, thoughtful citizens and how to be happy with themselves. What are the most exciting opportunities pupils can experience at your school? What do they most enjoy? If you asked most pupils at the school, they would say they have ‘fun’ every day. We’re a small prep school for boys, with a co-ed nursery. The small class sizes mean we can make sure that we get to know what makes each pupil tick and encourage them in whatever aspect of school life that most appeals to them. 6 January/February

What would you like to achieve over the next couple of years and beyond? We are enhancing our specialist areas of music, drama and sport. We’ve recently spent £150,000 on two all-weather sports pitches and we’ll be making further investments into the drama and music departments. What makes you proudest to be headmaster of West House? Shaking the boys’ hands as they leave for the last time and contemplating all they have accomplished at West House. Please email to arrange a tour or call 0121 440 4097 or visit www.westhouseprep.com READ FULL INTERVIEW

TWEEN

Why Aiyven and Kirsten are Happier Every Chapter Sisters Aiyven (12) and Kirsten (13) love writing stories and both published debut novels in 2020. Families talks to them to find out more. What made you start writing stories? Our parents read stories to us every night when we were young, which opened up whole new worlds to us. From around the age of 4 or 5, we were folding pieces of paper into cards and writing stories inside them - and just never stopped! What do you like best about writing stories? The best thing is how in a few hours, a new universe can sprout out of thin air. How many stories have you written? Many of our early stories were on laptops we don’t have any more but every month we write short stories for our book subscription box, Happier Every Chapter. Over time, we’ve written at least thirty stories each. That’s excluding our books. Do you make a plan for your stories? When we were younger, we often just typed whatever came to mind, which can result in an unusual plot and a storyline that doesn’t flow very well. Now, we plan Familiesonline.co.uk

the beginning, build-up, climax, resolution and ending. Once you have those five factors planned, it’s just a matter of connecting the dots. Interested in Aiyven and Kirsten’s advice on story-writing? READ MORE

HEALTH

How CBT can help children with anxiety By Lilly Sabir As both a clinical therapist and a mother, I know from personal and professional experience how important it is to help our children understand, identify and support their own mental wellbeing. Studies suggest that the earlier children are empowered with the resources needed to improve the way they think, the earlier positive foundations are laid that they can build on throughout their lives. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is identified as the most effective therapeutic intervention in managing anxiety. When your child expresses feeling tiredness or pain, this can be one of the most demonstrative signs they are anxious - somebody or something has triggered an emotional response within them. Children don’t know how to express and articulate emotional language in the early years but this improves with age. Tummy aches, headaches and ‘something is hurting’ is often a child’s way of saying whatever is going on around them has caused them stress. They need to calmly be helped to cope with that pain, using fun ways that can help them tap into the sensations occurring in their bodies and minds. Familiesonline.co.uk

It’s important to recognise when a child needs therapeutic intervention, rather than masking their emotional problems and hoping they will grow out of them; the earlier the intervention, the more effectively treatments can work. If you have a child who is suffering with anxiety-related issues, find out more about some child-friendly CBT techniques that you can use to help them. READ MORE

Moving on after separation and divorce By Adele Ballantyne At Only Mums and Only Dads, we get many emails expressing concern at the way an ex-partner has introduced their new partner to the children. Often these emails report that the children have become upset as a result. So we asked Adele Ballantyne for her advice on getting this right. Separating when you have children isn’t easy but as a new ‘normal’ begins to emerge, you may find yourself or your ex-partner starting to think about moving on with the ‘adult’ part of life. So, what happens when you want to start socialising and even dating again? Before dating, I would say that it’s important to take time to heal, to reflect and think about who you are and what you want going forward.

definitely worth discussing and agreeing a plan with your ex-partner about how you would manage the introduction of any new, long-term partner to your children. READ MORE

Five family-friendly ideas for an active start to 2022 By @girlaboutbirmingham I love New Year. I love it in the same way that I love a fresh page of a diary, a list, or even a Monday. My new chapter usually starts with a commitment to be fitter. It doesn’t always last, but what if it could? 1. Outdoor gyms A winter walk is great for a free activity in Birmingham so why not pair it up with a park/playground visit, or an outdoor gym for older children and grown-ups. So wrap up, get your gloves on and head out! Try Wythall Park, Warley Woods, Shirley Park, Knowle Park, or New Hall Valley Country Park. 2. My kind of running There are many family-friendly running groups and events if you care to look for them starting right from a buggy run, up to races suitable for older kids. One such group is Run of a Kind. You could also try: Cannon Hill Junior Park Run or junior runs at West Smethwick, Stevens Park, and Malvern Park, Solihull. Wolf Run organise family friendly events, age 7+. 3. Secret cycle routes Eco Birmingham is a wonderful organization whose aim is to create a sustainable city. What drew me in 22 January/February

initially was the Secret Birmingham cycle routes! There are three to choose from. 4. Make a splash! What better fun is there as a family than splashing around in the waves? We’ve spent many happy times counting down for the wave machine to start at Cocks Moors Woods Leisure Centre, Kings Heath. Wyndley Leisure Centre, Sutton Coldfield, and Stechford Leisure Centre also look good. Look up your local leisure centre to see what’s on offer. 5. Active Wellbeing I was introduced to The Active Wellbeing Society (TAWS) while visiting a local farm. To sign up for free membership just go to the website, click on the ‘activity finder’, pop in your postcode and find the activity groups that local to you. Follow me on Instagram for more ideas throughout the winter! READ FULL ARTICLE Familiesonline.co.uk
