Itisknownthatchildrenwhohavegoodhandwritingdo betterinschoolandenjoyitmore.Andtheoppositeisalso true:thosewhostrugglewithhandwritingareoftenata disadvantageinthehigh-pacedclassroomsetting.According totheDyspraxiaFoundation,childrenwithpoorhandwriting areusuallyawareoftheirdifficultyandtheiruntidy handwritingcanmakethemfeeluncomfortableandisolated. Commonly,childrenfeeldepressedandfrustratedasadirect resultofpoorwritingskills.
Handwritingactivatesaspecificpartofthebrainwhichhelps establishandbuildtheneuralpatternsneededforlearning andmemory.Studiesshowthat childrenwhospendtime workingonhandwritingproduceclearerandmorecoherent communication, alongwithbetterthoughtandorganisation skills.
Asthemajorityofourexaminationsarestillhandwritten, handwritingformsanintegralpartofoureducationsystem. Studentswhoareunabletowritelegiblyandarticulatelyfind themselvesataseveredisadvantage.Oncetheseskillsare taughtthereisan enormousdifferenceinconfidenceandselfesteem.

Developing independent learning

It’stimeforcelebrationwhenourchildrendisplay independence,rightfromwhentheytaketheirfirststeps ontheirownorrideabikewithoutstabilisers.Thesearebig familymoments;thechilddelightsintheirachievementsand parentsareproudtobepartofthesemilestonedevelopments.
Sowhatisindependence?
Beingindependentmeansnotneedingsupportandbecoming self-sufficient.Acertainamountofindependencecomes naturallywithageandexperience;however,asadultsthereis plentywecandotofacilitatethisgrowthalongtheway.
Returningtotheexampleofbabiestakingtheirfirststeps,we tendtosupportthembyholdingtheirhandfirstandthena finger,beforetheytryafewstepsontheirown.Clearingany potentialdangerousitemsoutoftheirwayfirst,ofcourse! Wecelebratewhentheymanagetowalkaloneandgivethem bundlesofpraise.
Helpingyourchildtobeindependentwithlearningisn’t dissimilartohelpingthemwalkunaided.Weneedtooffer support,gentlyreducethatsupportandpraisethemforgoing italone.Thisdoesn’tmeanstoppinghelpingyourchild;instead it’saboutnurturinganindependentattitudeandgrowthmindset. Ourinputwillbeagedependentandwillneedtobeadapted accordingly.
Trysomeofthesetipstohelpyourchildapproachtheirlearning withanindependentattitude:
Establisharoutineforstartinghomework. Forexample,forthe firstfiveminutes,yourchildworksontheirownor,inreverse, youworkwiththemjustforthefirstfiveminutestogetthem started.Dependingonthehomeworkandageofthechild, youcouldalsoconsiderhelpingoutwitheveryotherquestion orsection,thenslowlybuildingupthetimebetweensupport periods.
Givethemthreetokens. Theycanuseeachtokentoaskfor help.Oncetheyhaveuseduptheirtokens,theythenhaveto continueworkingalone,tryingtoworkthingsoutthemselves.

Thetangible,‘handling’stageusesphysicalobjectstosolve problems.Forexample:
