Teachers ‘As Good As Tests’ at Predicting Success Sats are no better than teachers at predicting pupil's GCSE and A-Level results, a study has found.
The study, published in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, found teacher assessments at age 7, 11 and 14 were just as effective as using Sats results to predict pupils’ subsequent exam success.
Free Childcare to Attend Smear Tests
Mothers across the UK are being offered an hour’s free childcare so they can attend a smear test.
Researchers say their findings, published in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, question whether the benefits of standardised exams outweigh the costs.
Childcare.co.uk, which claims to be the largest platform for parents and childcare providers in the UK has launched the initiative to encourage more women to attend a smear test to determine whether they are at risk of cervical cancer, which in 99.8% of cases is preventable with early treatment
A lead researcher Dr Kaili Rimfeld, from the King's College London, said: "We have shown for the first time that teacher assessments predict GCSE and A-level results just as well as earlier exam scores.”
Every year in the UK, around 3,000 women will be diagnosed with cervical cancer. In the UK, women are invited by the NHS to get a cervical screening from the age of 25 to 64. However, figures show the take-up of testing of women is at a 20-year low.
"The fact that exam scores correlate so highly with the teacher assessments raises questions about the value of the testing culture that characterises compulsory education in the UK." More info at www.kcl.ac.uk/news
While the test usually takes just five minutes, a free hour of childcare is being offered to allow for waiting times and travel. Mothers can take up this offer by visiting: www.childcare.co.uk /news/free-childcare-for-smear-tests
Talk, Sing and Play to Build Brains
Almost two thirds of parents are unaware that back and forth interaction with their child from birth can help their babies’ social, emotional and cognitive development.
A survey of more than 2,000 parents and expectant parents by the NSPCC found that 62% were unaware that moments playing, singing or telling stories can be brain-building ones. NSPCC research has found some parents struggle with ideas about how to interact with their young child beyond eye contact and cuddling, especially in the early months when they do not receive obvious feedback from their babies. In response, the charity is launching a campaign, ‘Look, Say, Sing, Play,’ to encourage new parents to use everyday scenarios to have more two-way interactions with their babies. Going to the shops, having a bath, going to bed – whatever you and your baby are doing can be turned into a back-and-forth. Parents can sign up to get weekly brain building tips that are fun and age appropriate. More info: www.nspcc.org.uk

Children who go to nursery are better behaved and have fewer emotional problems than those cared for by family or a childminder, a new study has found. Those who attended nursery, crèche or day care centre staffed by professionals for a year or more found it easier to make friends and had better social skills than youngsters who stayed at home. Researchers believe more stimulating play, more time spent reading, following rules from a young age and getting praise mean children thrive in a nursery setting. The study by the Sorbonne University in France looked at the factors involved in childhood health and development using a survey of 1,428 children. It tracked their emotional development from birth up to age 8. Previous research has suggested early childcare can boost a child’s language and thinking skills, and may improve their academic performance. More info: www.jech.bmj.com

Space Chase - 2019 Summer Reading Challenge The Summer Reading Challenge encourages children aged 4 to 11 to read six library books during the long summer holiday. Children's reading can decline during the summer holidays if they don't have regular access to books or encouragement to read for pleasure. This year the challenge will focus on the theme ‘Space Chase’ - an out-ofthis-world adventure inspired by the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing. Children are challenged to read at least six library books over the school holidays and collect rewards, such as stickers, on their way to receiving their challenge certificate and medal. The Challenge will launch in libraries on Saturday 13 July 2019 in England and Wales. The Challenge launched in Scotland on 22 June 2019. 10 Brain-Stimulating Activities to Keep Learning Alive this Summer The summer holidays are a great time for children to reboot and relax, but it’s also been reported they can lose 25% of what they’ve earned during the long break. Claire Winter looks at how to keep their learning alive with ten brain-stimulating activities to do this summer.
Have a Board Game Tournament Tactical board games like Chess and Backgammon give the brain a workout. Scrabble helps with vocabulary and Monopoly boosts Maths and money management skills. Games like Trivial Pursuit are great for learning general knowledge. Not only are board games fun, but they also teach valuable lessons like being strategic, following instructions, learning how to lose, and communicating with other players. Make Reading Fun The annual Summer Reading Challenge, which inspires kids across the UK to read six books and collect rewards for doing so, is an excellent place to start. Sign up at your local library. To find out more check out www.summerreadingchallenge.org.uk. When your child reads they exercise their brain, they use their imagination and they gain valuable knowledge about the world they live in. Comics and newspapers designed for kids like the Week Junior or First News, might appeal to kids who are not so keen on longer books. You could also reward reading with screen time on a favourite device or make bedtime a dedicated reading time. Learn to Play a Musical Instrument Playing a musical instrument helps engage the brain, and the summer is a perfect time to learn something new as your child can practice daily without the distraction of a busy schedule. Learning a musical instrument can also help with learning languages too. Try a New Sport Learning a new sport not only strengthens the body but also the brain. Families has a great guide to summer camps and activities on page [number] and locally you’ll find plenty of opportunities for your child to try a plethora of new sports like rock climbing, canoeing, Karate, abseiling and street dance. Sport also teaches essential life skills like self-confidence, teamwork and strategic thinking.

Keep a Summer Journal Encourage your child to document the summer with pictures and writing, perhaps choosing a theme. If they like computers, you could get them to create a digital journal with written entries, video diaries, and photos. Write Stories and Post Cards Documenting the summer on Instagram with pictures and captions is one way to get a child who loves social media platforms involved. If all else fails, encourage them to engage in the old-fashioned way and write stories with an actual pen and paper! Getting younger children to write and send postcards when you are on holiday will boost their writing skills. Learn to Cook Bake Off and Master Chef fans will love this challenge. Get your child to search for some fun recipes to make for the family. They could design a menu for the day, a picnic or an evening meal. Let them be in charge of buying the ingredients too, even if you need to accompany them to the supermarket or help them order online. Weighing, measuring and following instructions all keep the brain active. Get Gardening Research some insect and butterfly-friendly plants and flowers to plant in the garden or try and grow some fruit or veg from seed. It’s a great introduction to science, and you could also tie it in with a visit to a Botanical garden, Arboretum or National Trust property to sample the vast variety of plants and trees they have on offer. Learn to Code Coding is fascinating and great for kids who love their tech. There are some brilliant, free websites which teach your kids the basics of coding, such as Scratch (www.scratch.mit.edu), and Alice (www.alice.org) where children can learn to programme, tell stories and animate! Try Puzzles Number puzzles and Sudoku are great for improving the grey matter. Older children may enjoy a fun day at an escape room where they have to solve clues to get out. The key to surviving the summer holidays is to mix it up. If you are working, book the kids into a scheduled summer camp or activities, and plan some exciting days out, plus some fun at home. This will ensure your child doesn’t suffer from the dreaded brain drain.

Preparing Your Child for School
If your child is starting school in September, you may be wondering how best to prepare them for this big new adventure! Firstly, don’t worry if they can’t read a word or write their own name. The ability to interact, communicate and exercise a degree of independence is actually far more important than reading or writing skills when a child starts school. In fact, research shows a link between strong personal, social and emotional skills in Reception and higher levels of attainment in the future. So if you want to strengthen your child’s skills in these areas, here are some tips.
Independence The aim is for children to be responsible for themselves, their belongings and their actions at school. Help your child learn to get dressed, put on their coats/shoes, go to the toilet, tidy away toys and select their own activity resources. Communication and Language Research demonstrates that competent speakers develop into competent readers and writers; without competent spoken language, learning to read and write is more difficult. Language allows children to interact with the world. Being able to communicate their message effectively is satisfying and develops their esteem and self-confidence. Model good spoken language, with correct pronunciation of sounds, and encourage your child to speak in full sentences using an expanding vocabulary. Talk to your child about their experiences and feelings. This will have multiple benefits (including knowing how your child is really feeling and maintaining an open and trusting rapport), both now and in the future. Sharing and Interaction The more opportunities your child gets to interact and learn how to share and take turns, the less of a shock it will be when he or she starts school! Allow your child lots of opportunities to play with siblings and organise lots of play dates. If disagreements occur between children, talk to them about how to resolve issues, using words to prevent or resolve disagreements in the future. Respect for Behavioural Boundaries At school, behavioural expectations and boundaries are likely to include: www.familiesonline.co.uk
Listening the first time they are asked to pay attention • Keeping hands/feet to themselves • • Sharing and taking turns • Looking after things • Tidying away • Being kind to others You can reinforce these expectations at home by teaching children to respect themselves, their actions and the feelings of others. Physical (Gross and Fine Motor Skills) All activities require some sort of physicality, whether it be large (gross) or small (fine) movements. Gross motor skills are developed when hopping, skipping, running, jumping, galloping, balancing, pedalling a bike, using a scooter, climbing, throwing, catching, and kicking a ball. Varying the speed and direction of movement activities also develops spatial awareness. Your child can have fun developing fine motor skills at home with every day activities such as using pegs and scissors, bead threading, button fastening, moulding play-dough, and painting. Exploring and Investigating Try to make a conscious effort to step back and allow your child the opportunity to use his initiative and develop his creative, imaginative and innovative skills through exploring, investigating and initiating his own learning. Children learn by exploring, trying out and adapting ideas for themselves and taking ownership. All the above skills can be naturally weaved into your everyday lives. Enjoy and treasure these precious last few months with your child at home, and keep the above tips in mind to promote a positive start to your child’s school life.

Making it Easier By Gabrielle Nash
Whether you are about to travel with your children for the first time or are well versed in the drama of a family holiday, you may have caught yourself wondering whether it’s really worth it: the organisation; the cost; the stress; and the arguments? However, a family getaway is a key time to forge bonds, experience something new and, most of all, create memories that will last a lifetime. And the good news is that there are things you can do to make your car or plane journey as stress-free as possible.
Before you Go… Forethought and preparation will pay dividends. It’s useful to mentally walk yourself through the journey. If you’re flying, can you arrive at the airport a little earlier? If you’re driving, can you stop somewhere more pleasant than a motorway services? When you arrive at your destination will a meal or sleep be needed straight-away? Packing with very young children is not easy but older children (3+) might be more interested and even excited to get involved. Give them their favourite backpack and ask them to pack some things that they might want to get out during the journey. Think about what you want to get from this holiday or trip – is it adventure, relaxation, fun? Travelling with children is fundamentally different to travelling solely with adults. You can’t go at your own pace, or sing along to your favourite power

ballads in the car and you sadly won’t be catching up on the latest movie releases on the plane (at least until your children are old enough to be doing the same!). Can you adjust your expectations of the holiday, making some loose plans but being prepared to go with the flow if things go awry?
Tips for your Child’s Age-Group
n Babies The biggest fear when getting on a plane with a baby is that they’ll scream. And the biggest fear about embarking on a long-ish car journey is also that they’ll scream. This is a valid concern. What can you do to make it easier? Whether you’re flying or driving, can you time the journey so your baby is *likely* to be due for a nap? Can you make sure that feeds, nappy changes and snoozes happen when they need to? Zip-lock or clear toiletry bags are ideal for keeping things clean and organised. If you can, take a sling or baby carrier – they’re great for a quick stop-off on a car journey, or settling your little one on a plane. n Toddlers and Pre-Schoolers
Potentially the trickiest age group, whether they’re on your lap on a plane or have their own seat in the car, you’ll need a few tricks up your sleeve. Generally this age-group respond well to a small bag they’ve not seen the contents of before i.e. a few small new toys, some stickers and maybe even a small pot of play dough. If you’re flying and feel that take-off and landing may be daunting for your little one, you can distract them with a toddler app (games or painting) on your device.
n Primary School Age Children When children get a bit older, they might appreciate a full-on activity book or pack. Sealed in a heavy-duty zip-lock bag, these books or packs can be used in the car, on a plane or anywhere else on holiday e.g. in a restaurant. Usborne do a great range for the younger primary years. n Pre-Teens A more grown-up version of the activity book or pack can be appreciated as well as packs of cards, notebooks, word searches and doodle books which all help pass the time. With this age group you may feel comfortable with allowing unlimited screen time for the entire journey – whether on a plane or in the car – but if you’re driving, an audiobook that everyone is interested in is a lovely distraction which can be enjoyed together. n For All Age Groups… Keep an easy-to-access bag with wet wipes, antibacterial gel, water and snacks always on you for the inevitable spillages and snack crises! Lastly, remember to breathe and relax. What’s most important is that your journey gets you all to your holiday destination safely and soundly. Why It’s Important to Teach Children about Money and Top Tips to Get Started By Erik Bohjort
Money. It’s a topic that some of us find difficult to talk about, especially when it comes to discussing personal finances. However, it’s important we are not silent about this topic as studies show that children are likely to grasp money management skills best when they are having fun practising with their parents. Luckily, there are lots of easy ways to get your child started on learning the basics of financial literacy, as well as equipping them with the essential skills such as how to earn, how to save, and most importantly, how to spend responsibly.
Start Talking about Money Openly communicating with your children about money will encourage them to develop a healthy relationship with it. Consider involving your children in a real-life family budget discussion, allowing them to hear about the impacts that learning, saving, and spending will have on your finances. For starters, have a transparent discussion about the budget you’ve set for a particular family activity that you want to do, and what it means for you to have to save up for it. For example, are you saving up for a family holiday? Will you have to cut down on treats such as eating out in the weeks approaching it? Be clear about the costs and benefits of this saving’s endeavour. This helps your children understand how small savings add up to significant goals. Introduce Regular Pocket Money Pocket money is another great way to help your child develop financial literacy. Pocket money lets children be responsible for managing their own money, in a safe environment. It teaches children the essential principles of spending and saving, and the trade-offs between the two. Consider introducing real money to your children from the age of 5 years, starting with a weekly pocket money to get them used to receiving money regularly. Then consider transitioning over to a monthly allowance at around 11 so that they learn how to stretch their budget, as they will have to later in life.
potential. It works even better if they have a savings goal - such as ‘save up for a scooter’ - so that they can see how earning money moves them closer to their goal. Lose the Paper Chores Charts Previously, you might have taught your kids how to manage money using chores charts stuck on the fridge and a physical piggy bank, but with cash disappearing from everyday life, it is important that kids learn how to handle digital money from the get-go. Consider using technology to simplify your pocket money and chores management. For example, rather than just handing over weekly pocket money, empower your children to learn the principles of financial literacy by saving, earning, and spending through a free pocket money app or online like Go Henry (www.gohenry.com/uk/), where you can have sight of your child’s progress and discuss it as a family. Remember, the earlier you introduce money management skills to your child, the easier and more naturally they will grasp principles that will set them up to be responsible with money in their adult lives. Erik Bohjort is a child psychologist and Head of Research at Gimi (www.gimitheapp.com), a free pocket money app and chores manager.
Spend Some and Save Some Our brains are hardwired to be inherently impulsive. So, encouraging your children to save some of their money for their dream purchases is an excellent way to teach them how to control their impulsivity, and be more sensible in their spending. Gradually, they will start to understand the difference between ‘want’ and ‘need’, which helps to set a precedent for long-term financial wellbeing. Maximise your Child’s Earning Potential Setting rewards for chores is an effective way to teach children where money comes from, and that you have to earn it. Give your child optional chores that they can complete to earn some additional money. For example, perhaps if they empty the dishwasher, they could get 10p on top of their regular allowance. Encourage your children to suggest chores too. This is a great way to inspire them to think about their own earning www.familiesonline.co.uk

Common Toddler Behaviours: Separation Anxiety & Wanting Phone By Tanith Carey
Do you sometimes wonder what goes on your child’s head when they kick up a fuss? Do you often search for exactly the right words to calm them down? In the following extracts from a new book What’s My Child Thinking by Tanith Carey with psychologist Dr Angharad Rudkin, you will find evidence-based strategies to help you respond to two common toddler behaviours: separation anxiety and demanding your phone. ‘Mummy Don’t Go’ Scenario: When you try to drop your child off at the gym creche for the first time, your toddler clings to you. What she’s thinking: ‘I only want Mummy to look after me.’ What you’re thinking: ‘Why’s she kicking up such a fuss? I will only be forty minutes. I feel so guilty when she begs me not to go.’ Nothing is quite the same as the love and care a parent gives. Toddlers are also only just learning that you continue to exist when
you are out of their sight so seeing you leave can be scary for them. How your child reacts will also depend on how sensitive she is to change and whether she’s had sad or happy experiences when you’ve left her to be cared for by others before. So far if she’s mainly been used to being at home with mummy or daddy, the challenge of being in a new environment makes her hold on to you as her security.
I What to do: Show Faith in your Child’s Carer Your child will take her cues from you. Introduce the nursery worker, smile, ask their name and ask both them and your child if there are activities they might like to do together. I Use Distraction
Help your child shift her focus from her upset feelings outwards. Ask her to engage his curiosity and look around at the new toys she can play with. Point out other children who are already having fun as they will fascinate your child the most.
I Turn Parting into a Ritual Saying goodbye will be easier if your farewell is predictable every time. Give your child a hug and two kisses, and tell her what you will do together when you collect her, like going to the park, in order to give her something to look forward to. ‘Want your phone’ Scenario: While you’re waiting for your lunch in a café, your child says he wants to play with your phone. What’s he’s thinking: I don’t want to wait and sit still. The bright flashy colours on Daddy’s phone are more interesting. What you’re thinking: ‘At least it will keep him busy until the food comes. If I say no now he may throw a tantrum which would be embarrassing.’ As every parent knows, it’s tempting to hand over your phone. It gives you few moments to yourself and may even be a welcome break from some of the repetitive conversation that toddlers have at this age. However, by giving your child your phone you are giving him the message that phones are more interesting than people – and that rather than engage with him you are happy to give him a substitute for your time and attention. If you give in to a tantrum, you will also be sending the message that you will give in if he makes enough of a fuss.
I What to do:
Limit your Own Phone Use Your child is watching you. Keep checking and conversations to a minimum when you are with your child. In this situation, put your phone out of sight immediately which will mean he will forget about it more quickly.
I Distract Him
Come up with a game he loves to play. Ultimately remember that toddlers would always rather have engaged, one-one-one time play-time with you than play alone in a one-dimensional digital world.
I Take a Longer-Term View
While a phone may seem to work miracles to calm a fractious child, keep an eye on the bigger picture. It‘s going to be easier if you set clear boundaries now, rather than try to rein back his usage when he’s older. What’s My Child Thinking: Practical Child Psychology for Modern Parents by Tanith Carey with Dr Angharad Rudkin looks at how young children think and uses those insights to work out the best ways to help keep them calm and happy in more than 100 everyday situations including suffering from separation anxiety or demanding your phone. The book is published by DK, price £16.99.

Keeping your Family Safe & Healthy this Summer By Dr Tom York
As the weather gets warmer, you and your family are likely to be spending more time outside. Outdoor activities can be a lot of fun but it’s important that you’re prepared and take certain precautions to keep your family safe. Here are my tips for staying safe this summer. Be Careful around Open Waters Water starts to appear more and more inviting as the weather gets warmer. Whether you take your family kayaking on a lake, for a dip in the sea or simply for a riverside walk, the dangers of open water should not be overlooked. In 2017 there were 255 deaths from accidental drowning, and almost half of these were from people falling in the water unintentionally. The best way to prevent this is to never leave your children unsupervised when in and around water, teach them about the dangers of water and start taking them to swimming lessons from a young age. Always ensure they wear buoyancy aids if necessary. Watch Out for Open Windows Every year there children die or are seriously injured from falling out of open windows. If you open a window to keep the house cool, remember to consider if there’s any chance at all your child might be able climb up to the windowsill and fall out. Children can be surprisingly ingenious when it comes to exploring and you may not consider that they’d be able to effectively re-arrange the furniture until it’s too late. If in doubt, install a window guard but be aware that this isn’t a substitute for close supervision as children have been known to climb over these as well. Set Up a Safe Barbeque Area It won’t be long before the aromas of flame grilled food begin to fill the air in neighbourhoods up and down the country. Barbecues are a great way to enjoy the brighter evenings but pose a risk to young children who decide they wish to play with the new contraption in the corner of the garden. Explain to your children the dangers of going close to the barbecue and that the person doing the cooking needs to have plenty of space to cook safely. Take extra care to keep children away from the barbecue - you could even arrange for another adult to keep them distracted with some garden games. Prepare for British Weather Going on a long family walk can be a great way to enjoy the warm weather but ensuring you’re well-prepared can make the difference between having fond memories and an afternoon you’d prefer to forget. Plan your route, take a map rather than relying on a phone,
and take your phone too in case you need to call someone in an emergency. Pack plenty of water, sunscreen, snacks and make sure everyone has appropriate clothing and footwear. Consider taking waterproofs, a towel and even a survival blanket. We all know how changeable the British weather can be and children are especially susceptible to hypothermia should they be caught in an unexpected downpour or accidentally slip into water. Beware of Biting Insects With warm weather come a multitude of biting/stinging insects. Thankfully there’s nothing too dangerous in the UK but it still pays to be prepared. Insect repellent is a good first line of defence but antihistamines and anti-itch cream are also useful. Piriton is fast acting and is safe to use in children. Eurax cream or its steroid-containing alternative Eurax Hc is good for reducing the itchiness and swelling following a sting. Bee stings are best removed by scraping them off with a finger nail or the edge of a credit card. Pinching the stinger to try and remove it causes more venom to be released so this should be avoided. Both wasp and bee stings should be washed with soap and water and then a cold pack should be applied to the skin. Watch out for any signs of allergy such as a rash, facial swelling or difficulty breathing, especially in children who may not have been stung before. Classes, Clubs & Activities
Clubs and Classes: Planning Ahead Pays By Andrew Campbell
The summer holidays may seem long but they will soon be over. So it’s not too early to start thinking about what after school classes and clubs and weekend activities you may want to book for your child in September. This is particularly important if you have a child who wants to undertake a number of activities or classes or if you have multiple children. It’s essential to work out a schedule whereby all the activities fit together neatly and you are not left rushing from place to place with too little time to spare Planning ahead gives you time to research all the options thoroughly, talk to providers and book into free trials and taster classes that are scheduled early in September, before the term gets into full swing. Testing out your child’s interest in a new
activity by taking advantage of free trials and taster classes is definitely recommended if you want to avoid a situation where you pay for an activity in which your child swiftly loses interest. Without prior planning, it’s easy to find yourself scrabbling around in a hurry at exactly the time when you are also preparing for your child to go back to school. There’s the chance you’ll miss out on something suitable too, as popular classes fill up quickly. It’s also easier to get a session time that suits your family’s schedule if you are ready to book early, as well as being able to avoid travelling further to get exactly what you want. If you want to book your child into an activity with friends, there’s likely to be some co-ordination involved with their parents, so pre-planning is beneficial. Last but not least, you may find you can save money by taking advantage of ‘early bird’ booking discounts offered by many activity providers.

The award-winning Gloucestershire Warwickshire steam railway is one of the longest heritage railways in the country and is run almost entirely by 950 enthusiastic volunteers. Last year the line was extended and is now over 14 miles long running through the glorious Cotswolds from Cheltenham Racecourse to Broadway in Worcestershire. Along the route you can see all the way to the Malvern Hills and on a clear day to the Black Mountains of Wales. There is plenty to do to make this a great family day out with a heritage trail, an I spy book, a children's quiz and lots more. There are also plenty of refreshment facilities, picnic areas and a small play area. Trains run midweek and at weekends - check the website for details - and there are a number of special events during the year to keep everyone happy. www.gwsr.com

Top Tips for Choosing Classes, Activities & Clubs for Your Child
Classes, Clubs & Activities
By Elisabeth Dolton Do you ever feel overwhelmed by the range and volume of activities, classes and clubs available for your child to join? Aside from the important issue of LOGISTICS, in other words, how are these activities going to fit into your schedule, how do you go about deciding what to choose?
Help them choose activities that reflect who they are and what they want to learn and don’t impose your own preferences. If you have a reluctant child, explain that it’s important and fun to try new things, but don’t insist. Remember that moving from one activity to another is normal amongst children.
Don’t assume that high cost equals high quality. Ensure staff members are professionals with relevant skills and experience. Consider the mix of activities. The benefits of exercise are huge, so try to include a sport. If you are stuck between two similar activities, consider the usefulness, e.g. drumming lessons might be cool, but the guitar might have wider applicability.
Good luck! PERFORMING ARTS TUITION FOR AGES 4-18YRS

Well - a group of soldiers return from the war to a household in Messina, causing the kindling of new love interests and the re-kindling of old rivalries.
