Surprisingly, according to the British Social Attitudes Survey carried out by the National Centre for Social Research, around half of people (51%) in the UK think that the best option for a family with a preschooler is for the mother to do most of the childcare. When deciding how a family with a pre-school age child
should best organise work and family life, only 16% of those surveyed favour arrangements that represent an equal split of childcare and work between parents. 32% think mothers should work part-time and fathers full-time, 19% think mothers should stay at home and fathers should work full-time, 9% think that the mother and father should both work part-time and 6% favour both parents working full-time. Nancy Kelley, Deputy Chief Executive at the National Centre for Social Research, comments: “Despite considerable social change, and strong policy intervention, we still have some way to go in supporting women to flourish in their careers and men to take a more active role in caring for children.” More info: www.natcen.ac.uk
Measles: one in seven 5-year olds not protected One in seven 5-year olds may not be protected against potentially life threatening measles, Public Health England (PHE) has warned. PHE has revealed that about 30,000 children may have started primary school with no protection against measles, mumps and rubella, while 90,000 may have had only the first of the two vaccines necessary for protection. There were 230 cases of measles in England in the first quarter of 2019, many linked to visiting
European countries during holiday periods. As a result of these outbreaks, the UK has now lost its measles-free status, just three years after the virus was eliminated. PHE is urging all parents to check their child’s Red Book to make sure there is a record of two MMR doses and the 4-in-1 booster vaccine. If not, parents should contact their GP practice to arrange any further vaccinations. More info: www.nhs.uk/conditions/ vaccinations/nhs-vaccinationsand-when-to-have-them/

Parents’ place The Tiger Who Came to Tea hits the screen this Christmas
The Tiger Who Came to Tea, the classic children’s book by Judith Kerr, will come to TV this Christmas adapted as a half-hour animated film for Channel 4. It will feature a star-studded cast of voices including Benedict Cumberbatch, David Oyelowo, Tamsin Greig, David Walliams and Paul Whitehouse. The role of Sophie will be
played by 7-year-old Clara Ross, who will be making her TV debut. For anyone that doesn’t know the book, it tells the tale of the tiger that shows up at young Sophie’s front door and proceeds to eat the family out of house and home, even going so far as to drink all of the water out of the taps, before declaring: “Thank you for my nice tea. I think I’d better go now,” and departing. Chloe Tucker, Commissioning Executive, Channel 4 Drama said: “The Tiger Who Came to Tea is a timeless classic, and we hope this film will capture the same special place in every family’s imagination watching it.

Education Sixth Form building development begins at Stockport Grammar
Stockport Grammar School is excited to announce that a significant development of its Sixth Form facilities has begun after planning permission was received. A spectacular glass roof will be constructed over the current Sixth Form quad creating a large, modern and well-equipped social space for Lower and Upper Sixth Form students. The work is to be completed by Summer 2020. Existing facilities are also set to be developed to provide enhanced study spaces for the students and

contribute to the school’s excellent academic record. In SGS’s Junior School an extension to the front of the building will see the changing rooms double in size and the hall – which hosts assemblies, visiting speakers, authors, theatre companies and indoor sports has been refurbished. The Junior School Quad has also been landscaped with artificial lawns which will provide an all-year-round play and learning surface for pupils and a new roof for the main building has been completed. www.stockportgrammar.co.uk
Reduction in school breaks ‘unhealthy’
School break times are much shorter than they were two decades ago meaning children are missing out on valuable opportunities to make friends and develop social skills and exercise, according to research by the Nuffield Foundation. The study looked at how school breaks have changed over 25 years comparing data from over 1,000 primary and secondary schools.
It found that despite the length of the school day remaining much the same, break times are being squeezed even further with potential serious implications for children’s well-being and development. Afternoon breaks have been virtually eliminated; they are now only available to 15% of primary school children and 1% of secondary schools. There is also a clear trend to shorter lunch breaks with reported lunchtimes of 35 minutes or less. According to the authors, break times are important for children to get physical exercise – a particular concern given the rise in obesity, and to develop important social skills that are not learned in school lessons. Education Music is the key to opportunity
Abbey Gate College Chapel Choir provides pupils with unique access to performance opportunities in prestigious venues both across the UK and abroad. For 30 consecutive years, the Chapel Choir has had the honour of performing Evensong under the world-famous dome at St Paul’s Cathedral, London. It is an opportunity for the choir members to perform in one of the world’s most beautiful buildings to a congregation of several hundred visitors. In addition to St Paul’s, each summer members of the Chapel Choir enjoy a visit to a city in the UK, where they are invited by a Cathedral to perform Evensong to tourists, residents and parents.
The Choir has performed in most English Cathedrals including Ely Cathedral and King’s College Chapel, Cambridge. Annual visits to English Cathedrals are accompanied by many successful tours abroad by the Chapel Choir which have included St Patrick’s, New York and St Mark’s, Venice. Pupils also have the unique opportunity of attending the Rodolfus Foundation Choral Course, an eight-day course for approximately 90 young singers aged 16 to 21, which includes choral workshops and individual singing lessons. The annual ‘Spirit of Christmas’ concert at Chester Cathedral gives members of the Choir the rare opportunity to work alongside a host of stars from stage, television and film. Performing to an audience of over 1000 people, the evening is a fantastic experience for pupils. www.abbeygatecollege.co.uk
The Grange School: Where children live their education
There’s something special about The Grange School. It is something that’s difficult to describe, a feeling, an atmosphere, an experience that you have to encounter to appreciate. And that experience comes from letting their young people live their education. The school’s excellent academic results are due to everything else they do to create an educational experience that sees their students leave the school as confident, ambitious and inspiring adults. The Grange is celebrating its best A Level
results in four years with nearly 9 in every 10 entries at grade B or above and 64% of grades were A*-A. The school achieved over three times the national average for GCSE entries achieving grades 7-9. The Grange journey starts in Reception and through the Junior School where children are actively encouraged to explore a range of subjects and interests – and continues in the Senior School. The Curriculum is an all-embracing experience and is made up of their Academic, Enrichment and Personal Development Programmes. Starting in the Sixth Form marks a clear transition for students to a level of education with greater privileges accompanied by enhanced levels of responsibility. To experience that special Grange atmosphere, please get in touch to book on to one of their Open Events. www.grange.org.uk
School children to tackle speeding drivers An initiative in London is getting primary school pupils to confront speeding motorists, in a bid to enforce the 20mph speed limit near schools. The Junior Roadwatch scheme involves drivers who are caught speeding and
14 Families Cheshire
pulled over by police officers being given the option of receiving a fixed penalty fine and points on their license, attending a speeding awareness course or being told off by children. Drivers “deemed suitable” to speak to the pupils following a
police national computer check will face questions such as “are you aware of the consequences of speeding” and “why do you think the speed limit is 20mph on this road?”. Collisions are a leading cause of serious injury, disability or death of children in the UK. In
2017, 48 children died in road collisions in the UK and over 15,700 children were injured. Similar schemes are being used elsewhere, including parts of Hertfordshire, West Yorkshire and Northumberland. More info: www.tfl.gov.uk
