News Parents eligible for childcare compensation
Thousands of parents who have missed out on Tax-Free Childcare due to technical problems with the Childcare Service website may be able to claim compensation from the Government. The Childcare Service website, which is run by HMRC, has been plagued with technical glitches since it went live in
April, affecting parents’ ability to register for Tax-Free Childcare and 30 hours childcare. In order to receive 30 hours free childcare in September, eligible parents needed to have received a code from HMRC by 31 August and taken it to their childcare provider to secure a place. New guidance published on the gov.uk website under the heading ‘Childcare Service Compensation’ states that: ‘If you’ve been unable to access Tax-Free Childcare through your childcare account for technical reasons, you may be able to claim compensation.’ For more information call HMRC on 0300 123 4097 or visit www.gov.uk/guidance/ childcare-service-compensation

Pioneering charity Brain Tumour Research has taken an innovative approach to their range of Christmas cards this year, signing up supporter and artist, Caroline Copland, to design a new card for 2017. Caroline, who sadly lost her mother Janet to a brain tumour three years ago, was inspired by the Christmas Hope Trees which decorate the charity’s Research Centres of Excellence across the UK each year. The Hope Tree cards will join other festive favourites in
the charity’s range. All cards are priced at £4 per pack of ten, with at least 60% of the proceeds going towards supporting vital brain tumour research. As a bookseller, one of the least favourite phrases that I hear from passing parents is “No. You’ve got too many books already.” What sort of a message is that? I mean, those very same mums and dads also grumble that their kids just aren’t interested in reading any more. No excuses – Winter is the perfect season for hunkering down and burying noses, so here are some suggestions for filling your youngsters boots with words.
0-2 YEARS
Twinkle Twinkle ABC by Barney Saltzberg Phaidon RRP £8.95 And we begin with this artful and melodic board book that mixes and matches possibly the two most sung baby songs on the planet (well, your particular parental planet at any rate) accompanied by a banjo, a growling bear and a pirouetting cow (of course!) Perfect for winding down and instilling the irresistible idea in those little minds that bedtime means books. The Snowbear by Sean Taylor & Claire Alexander Frances Lincoln RRP £11.99 Iggy and Martina head off into the snow to play but somehow they wander off just a little too far and after all their hard work getting cold hands whilst patting the snow into shape, who do you think comes to their rescue?
3-5 YEARS
The Bear & the Piano Sound Book by David Litchfield Frances Lincoln RRP £14.99 Now that you’ve warmed up the vocal chords above, everyone can enjoy this new sound edition of last year’s sumptuous hit picture book for pre-schoolers. Not too loud though, or – whispers - you’ll wake the baby.
Richard Scarry’s Best Treasury Ever by Richard Scarry Harpercollins RRP £20.00 For fifty years children have been entertained by the antics of Lowly Worm, Hilda Hippo and Huckle Cat and I think the deep affection for the Busytown stories persists because they convey diversity, combined with slapstick and familiarity. Everything and everyone is on the go here in aeroplanes, umpteen diggers and buses, and of course Mr Frumble’s Pickle Car. Just don’t get a ticket from Sergeant Murphy!

6-8 YEARS
Santa Claude by Alex T Smith Hodder RRP £5.99 Claude, the daft dog with the knack for being in the wrong place at the right time, has done much to encourage early readers in these pocket sized stories with lots of pictures alongside clear un-daunting text. Our eponymous hero is back and wearing a certain festive person’s trousers, which are just little too big (ho ho ho!) and is causing mayhem with his best friend dear old cuddly Sir Bobblysock. Scaredy Cat, Scaredy Cat by Phil Earle Hodder RRP £6.99 I have thoroughly enjoyed the barmy adventures of the inhabitants of Storey Street and recommend the previous three titles that can be read in any order – upside down.. inside out.. etc. For our final visit we meet young resident Kay Catt, a timid soul with much to worry about. Enter Wilf Wilkinson, the weirdest pensioner ever to set foot in the street. Never mind a flat cap and cardi, this old codger has a pointy hat. Just like a.. um.. wizard?
9-11 YEARS
Father Christmas & Me by Matt Haig Canongate RRP £14.99 The third in the tinsel decked trilogy by a brilliant thinker and writer of books for all ages, in which we meet Amelia and her newly adoptive parents, none other than Father and Mary Christmas (who wouldn’t want them for a mum and dad?). But wait, everything we love about this very special time of year is under threat from a certain jealous Easter Bunny and his rabbit henchmen. Yikes!
The Book of Dust by Philip Pullman David Fickling RRP £20.00 By heck, this really is a major publishing event. Set ten years before the Northern Lights, we meet a new character, Malcolm, who navigates the Thames in his canoe ‘La Belle Sauvage.’ One day he discovers that the priory across the water has a visitor, an infant named Lyra… In a hundred years time, should bookshops still exist, long after flash-in-the-pan celeb authors have been forgotten, Pullman will be on the shelf right next to the great storytellers such as Dickens and Swift. If we do our job right as parents now, our children’s children will still have their noses buried in really good books like this. You can never have too many of them. Justine Crow is co-founder of the famous South London bookshop ‘Bookseller Crow on the Hill’ based in Crystal Palace. As well as being a blogger and reviewer, parent of three and qualified swimming teacher, she also co-authored The Little Book of Nits published by Bloomsbury. familiesonline.co.uk

Parents’ place Keeping kids active: 5 top tips
Children’s sports and fitness specialist, EdStart, is running an educational school assembly roadshow across Manchester and Cheshire, to spread the word about why staying active is so important for children. Celebrity ambassadors include Olympic Gold medallist and star of ‘I’m a Celebrity...’ Sam Quek, international rugby player Adrian Morley and European boxing champion Jamie Moore. Here, former professional
rugby player and MD of EdStart, Chris Irwin, shares his top tips on getting more movement into your kids’ day. Did you know that children aged 5 to 16 should have at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day? With a recent world Health Organisation report showing that childhood obesity has grown tenfold over the last four decades, it’s more important than ever for children to maintain a healthy lifestyle. An hour each day may seem like a challenge

– but there are lots of ways to keep kids moving: • Playing sport is an obvious way to keep fit, but have you ever thought of doing it as a family? Not only does it help keep kids active (as well as adults), but it can strengthen family ties and improve communication. It doesn’t have to be regimented – try a family walk at the weekend. • Every little helps – encourage children to walk or cycle to school, take the dog for a walk or get involved in sports clubs. It can take a while to find your child’s best fit – at a young age just trying out lots of different activities is to be applauded. Balance activities like gymnastics will help in all sorts of sports in the future, building transferrable skills. • Positive attitudes start at school. PE lessons are so important, and really help to develop good habits for life. Physical education has even been linked with greater academic achievement, and can help
to reduce stress and anxiety. EdStart’s fitness assembly roadshow fires up a love of sport in children and helps spread the word about why it’s so important. • Sports not screens is an important mantra – easier said than done, but try leading by example and putting down your smart phone or tablet and getting into the garden as a family. Having said that, we know how much kids love screens, which is why EdStart uses ‘virtual’ fitness coaches in our school sessions, beaming in exercise demonstrations on the hall’s big screen! • Keep track of progress to keep kids motivated and boost their self-esteem. As children get older, they can lose confidence in their sporting abilities, so being able to see how far they have come is extremely rewarding. For more information on EdStart and enquire about booking an assembly for your child’s school, visit www.edstart.org.uk/provision.
Can you invite an international student to share your home? With the number of international students coming to UK boarding schools, there’s an increasing need for host families. Host families look after students when they are unable to travel home, generally during the short school holidays, but sometimes in longer holidays too. Families with children of their own, empty nesters or grandparents may all benefit from hosting international students. At the same time, a student will derive enormous cultural and language benefits whilst staying in a caring home, enhancing their learning experience and life in the UK.
Whether it’s adapting to life in the beautiful English countryside or life in a large, busy city, or learning to bake bread with a host and teaching them how to cook the best noodles, these shared experiences can give rise to lifelong friendships. Hosting can be short term from just a few weekends a year, to half term holidays and can even include some of the longer school holidays. If you register to enjoy this wonderful experience, a generous compensation package will reward your hospitality. For further information, please contact jane@collegeguardians. co.uk

Parents’ place Top Ten Tips for Family Happiness By Andy Cope
When you ask parents what they want for their kids, what’s usually the most common reply? They want their children to be happy. Sometimes it’s hard to balance what’s best for your child with what makes them happy – but the two don’t have to be mutually exclusive. It is generally accepted that happier kids are more likely to turn into successful, accomplished adults. So here are my top ten tips. 1. Praise your children for their effort rather than their ability. So, for example, if they get a good grade in maths don’t say “Genius, you are the next Einstein.” Do say, “Brilliant! That shows what you can achieve with hard work.” 2. If you have small children, practise what Gretchen Rubin calls ‘gazing lovingly.’ This means downing tools at the end of the evening and standing at your children’s bedroom door, watching them sleep. (Only with your own kids though, and there is an age limit of 10! After that, the general rule is that you NEVER go in your kids’ bedrooms, just in case!) 3. Read a bedtime story to your kids like it was the most exciting book in the world. And note, it is doubly important for sons to see their dads reading books. 4. How we behave in a moment of triumph and joy makes a huge difference in either building or undermining familiesonline.co.uk
relationships. Broadly speaking, parents need to be ‘active constructive,’ which means celebrating success with genuine enthusiasm. I’m not suggesting an over the top punching of the air celebration for every smidgen of good news, but a raising of your levels of enthusiasm means you won’t miss out on so many glorious relationship building opportunities. The ‘active constructive’ reaction is completely brilliant on all sorts of levels. The message is they’re proud and you’re proud. Your active constructive response means they know you’re proud. Best of all, you’ve engineered it so you know they know you’re proud. 5. If you write a list of 10 things you really appreciate but take for granted, your family will almost certainly be on there. So stop taking them for granted! 6. Any family is only as happy as their least happy child. Rather than avoiding them, invest time with your children and be genuinely interested in what they’re up to. This is such an important point, I should probably have included it at number 1. 7. Chatter away! A study by Hart and Risley suggested that by age 4, children raised in poor families will have heard 32 million fewer words than children raised in professional families. To add to the woe, it’s not just
quantity, it’s also the emotional tone. So please speak a lot and, where possible, couch your language in the 8:1 ratio of positive to negative. Say instead of “how was school?” why not upgrade to “what was the highlight of your day?”’ or “what was the funniest or most amazing thing you’ve done today?” Say it like you mean it and, of course, properly listen to the answer. You will be rewarded with an increased likelihood of a positive conversation. 8. Turn off your electronic devices and spend more time with your real flesh and blood family. Happiness is a social thing. 9. Practise the four minute rule. This is a phrase that came from a guru friend of mine, Steve McDermott, and I love its simplicity. Basically, your emotions are contagious. They leak out of
you and ‘infect’ your family around you. So, when you make the conscious choice to be positive and upbeat, it takes four minutes for other family members to catch it too. So be enthusiastic for 4 minutes and everyone else will feel great too! 10. When you’re thinking of passing down your inheritance, be sure to remember that it’s not just a lump of cash and a bit of jewellery. You are passing down habits, knowledge, mind-sets and cognitive traits. Your positivity can set your child up for life! Andy Cope is a happiness expert and co-author of The Little Book of Emotional Intelligence: How to Flourish in a Crazy World. For more information see www.artofbrilliance.co.uk.

Clubs & classes The benefits of children learning a new language
Every parent wants the very best for their child, guiding them into learning new skills to help them grow and mature The most common activities are sports and drama, and while these activities do stimulate learning and
16 Families Manchester
development, studying a second language also offers many short and long-term benefits. Here are just a few that you might not have thought of: It promotes self-discipline From an early age, your child should be taught that
nothing comes without hard work. It’s true that learning a second language can be very rewarding, but it will take a lot of time and determination to do so. Therefore, as well as learning a new language, your child will learn a valuable lesson about how success is only achieved through self-discipline and effort. You can’t put a price on this knowledge. It’s fun Learning a language really can be lots of fun and your child will no doubt be delighted when they get the opportunity to show off their newfound skill to you, their friends and relatives. The
learning process can also be enjoyable if you incorporate a few games in along the way as well as interactive teaching methods. Remember, you don’t have to spend hours upon hours in a classroom to learn a new language. In fact, some people even develop their accent and pronunciation by watching popular TV shows in a different language. It’s great for communication We live in a multicultural society where there are more languages spoken than ever before. In London alone, there are over 300 different languages spoken. Whether your child is learning French, Spanish, Polish, German or Mandarin, they will be able to communicate with a wider range of people once they have crafted their new skill. This should also help with their understanding of the world and acceptance of different cultures. It's extremely useful Knowing an additional language can come in very

Clubs & classes handy. While we already know that it can go far in sprawling cities like London, it’s obviously very benefical whenever they go abroad. This means that holidays won’t just be about sun, sea and sand but another adventure where your young one can hone their skills. Just think how much easier it will be to order at a local restaurant! It helps with education Studies have shown that being bilingual can help your child excel in school. This is because the process of learning an extra language improves the function of the brain. In particular, problem solving is one area that should develop, making it easier for your child to excel in difficult subjects like maths. Your child’s English can improve In many cases, your child’s grasp on English will improve after they have learnt a new language. This is because they will have an increased awareness when it comes to root words, syntax and grammar. In turn, this will help develop your child’s writing skills, which should be noticeable when they get older and start taking important exams such as GCSEs and A-Levels. It can lead to wider career options. The best employers take notice of bilingualism because it reflects self-discipline. Some jobs will even specify that they require a bilingual candidate because it means they can do business with people from overseas.
Essentially, bilingualism is just another skill that will (one day) make your child’s CV stand out. It’s easier to learn now Most adults have visions of one day learning a language but sadly it can be quite difficult in later life. As well as busy lifestyles getting in the way, as we become older, it becomes harder for the brain to absorb new information like it once could. That is why it’s beneficial for your child to start learning another language from a young age. Other languages will also come more naturally Once your child knows an additional language, they will find it easier to learn a third language in the future. They will also be able to pick up language-based skills – such as shorthand – much faster than other individuals. There’s no telling how many languages your child could know by the time they are in their twenties. Start your child’s linguistic journey today All parents should give some serious thought to their child learning another language. While most children will be able to grasp the skill from as young as three, the majority will still benefit from starting their linguistic journey before they reach high school. Education The Secret Lives of 4 & 5 year olds at school
Most parents and carers wish they could be a fly-on-the-wall when their child starts school. Well, Channel 4’s Secret Lives of 4 & 5 Year Olds which returns this November, allows them to do just that. Filmed in a specially rigged Essex school, the new series aims to give viewers a child’s perspective of their transition to a school setting. Claire Winter talks to Dr Elizabeth Kilbey, a psychologist from the show, about what she learnt whilst filming the series. Can you tell us more about the series? “It offers this wonderful window, through which we can watch the children playing and interacting with each other. We give them lots of things to do, to see how they manage and play. It’s an amazing way of showing viewers what their children are actually doing at school.” How did the children cope with the transition to school? “Parents’ main worry is generally ‘will my child be alright?’ and some children are very anxious. A great example is that wonderful picture of Prince
George looking a bit worried on his first day of school. What I can now confidently tell parents and carers is that their children are absolutely fine, once they are gone. They are doing lots of interesting things and coping brilliantly.” Not all children cope with the transition so well, what advice would you give to them? “Take a calm, pragmatic approach. Essentially children tend to be worried about what they think might happen. In reality, they are going to be fine, but they just don’t know that yet. Be confident and reassure your child that everything will be okay. Children are inherently social beings. They are curious and want to interact with people so even timid children will find something that sparks their imagination. Remember, the school setting is designed to engage them. It’s getting them to go in which is the tough bit. Once they are there they’ll be fine.” What advice can you give parents whose children haven’t started school yet? “Children need to develop
communications skills, get used to talking and relating to others and playing cooperatively. All of these social abilities will be vital later in life. Encourage lots of play with other children and get them to question how things work because natural curiosity is the main driver for learning.” How can kids deal with friendship issues, if they have fallen out with someone? “It’s very tempting as a parent to want to fix this problem, but children fall in and out of friendships hundreds of times a day and can usually sort issues out themselves. If the problem is more complicated and you think there is unkind behaviour or bullying, then an adult might need to step in. But on the whole, conflict, when you are learning to be social is perfectly normal. Ask your child, “Is there anything you can do to sort the situation out?” Try and help them understand the other child’s perspective. As parents, we often overcomplicate issues. We can learn a lot from children, particularly the way they are so open and forgiving.” How can we deal with the issue of gender with young children? “I feel that gender isn’t particularly a driving force for children this age. They do make assumptions about children but they are happy for them to be corrected and they play on a much more straightforward basis. Gender becomes a much bigger issue for children towards the end of primary school. It’s important
to encourage them to keep an open mind and understand that children of all ages and genders need the same opportunities because that is what is important for their development. Brains are not gendered, brains allow our children to learn.” What can you do if a child is exhibiting OCD type behaviour? “Anxiety needs a non-emotional response and a calm authority can be incredibly helpful. It’s tempting to offer support to someone who is suffering by saying, “isn’t this terrible,” but this reinforces the idea that there is something to be scared of. Parents shouldn’t try to neutralise the anxiety or reinforce it; it is best to carry on, with a business as usual approach. “If you are concerned or the behaviour is continuing over a long period of time and in more than one setting, get some advice from your school, GP or Health Visitor.” What was the most interesting insight you gained from watching the children? “I learnt that children of this age are hilarious and multilayered. They are not that different from adults. They have amazingly rich social lives. They test hypotheses, ask questions, fail and then carry on. They are resilient and incredibly complicated, just like we are.” ‘The Secret Lives of 4 and 5 Year Olds’ will be aired on Channel 4 in November.

Education Making the most of your school parents’ meetings
So, you’ve been to a meeting with your child’s teacher and you’ve got an overview of how your child is progressing. Explore Learning gives you a few tips on what to do next. • Discuss the feedback from the teacher with your child. They may already be aware of what they need to work on but if they don’t, talk about it. Set a goal together of something they would like to achieve based on their
20 Families Manchester
feedback and aim to complete this by the end of next term. Decide together about how they are going to get there. For example: You’re told that they give up every time they have to learn something new, especially times tables. The goal you come up with together is to have a can-do attitude. Steps to getting there could be taking a new set of tables and learning them in
small batches. Praise them for the ones they have got right, alongside highlighting when they are being positive towards their learning so they know what kind of attitude is expected. • If you’ve set any goals with the teacher, then plan a time to review these. Depending on how the teacher likes to work, this could be an email, call or face to face catch up 6 – 8 weeks after the initial meeting. Review how things are going and make changes if needed. • You may come away from a meeting and realise you’ve forgotten something or you don’t understand how the school is reporting on progress. Contact the school if you still have questions, or look on their website, as you
should find a wealth of information on there. • Ask others for help. Don’t worry if you don’t understand something or want to know what others are doing. Lots of people will be in the same position so talk to fellow parents for advice. Alternatively, there are some great advice websites like www.theschoolrun.co.uk and www.oxfordowl.co.uk or if you have a tutor, talk to them. At Explore Learning our tutors always help parents when they need advice and will consider your child’s recent reports and feedback when tailoring their learning. Never be afraid to ask; there is no such thing as a silly question when it comes to your child’s learning!
