The countdown’s on till this year’s Manchester Midnight Walk, which will see around one thousand people hitting the city streets in support of a local charity. The launch is an interactive event, featuring great inventions from throughout history, storytelling and inspiring talks from the world of invention, science and technology, guaranteed to inspire children to get inventing! It takes place on Saturday 24 March (10am – 5pm) at Manchester Museum of Science and Industry and admission is free.

Technology good for learning
Recent research indicates that a staggering 96% of teachers believe technology has had a positive impact on the way children participate and learn in a lesson, whilst 56% believe that pupils are more engaged when technology is used, according to a survey conducted by Smoothwall, a web filtering provider for schools. An impressive 86% of teachers also say that
technology has made them perform better and prepare more varied and exciting lessons. And parents are on board too. A survey conducted by The Knowledge Academy shows that 91% of parents believe technology is making it easier for them to be involved with their child’s education and 68% say that technology has increased their ability to help children with school work. However, there are some concerns. At least a third of teachers are worried about using technology in class because they cannot control what each child is doing whist it is being used. A similar number of parents also think that children already have too much access to technology and don’t need it at school. More information: www.smoothwall.com and www.theknowledgeacademy.com

Education More risky play for kids The Chief Inspector of Schools recently announced new training for School Inspectors to ensure they are properly focusing on child safety but not at the expense of opportunities to broaden and enrich young minds.
Amanda Spielman, the Head of Ofsted, expressed concern that children are being deprived of rewarding experiences and the ability to cope with normal everyday risk because of an overzealous approach to health and safety.
Statistics from A& E Departments have shown that injuries from tree falls are down amongst under-15s and that children are more likely to injure themselves in a tumble out of bed! Recent research has also shown that in today’s society
only 21% of children play outside today compared to 71% of their parents when they were children. More information: www.gov.uk/ government/speeches

Learning a musical instrument is hugely beneficial to your child’s development, and the art of music can only be positive as your child starts to navigate the choppy waters of adolescence. When should your child begin? Although some parents start their children at three, most teachers would agree that seven is ideal for several reasons; they must be able to hold the instrument, be able to grasp simple music notation and have the attention span required. What skills are important? Notes in music range from A to G. As long as your children know this, forwards and backwards, they can start to read and learn music! Obviously, co-ordination is useful. Your child will need to know if playing left-handed or right-handed feels most natural to them, but left-handed equipment is often not as easy to find. What’s needed? Having your own instrument is
the easiest way to ensure your child is going to progress as quickly as possible, but it’s not the cheapest option! Talk to local schools and clubs about hiring the equipment, which may be more affordable. Music, including grade books, is easy to buy, however, most music can now be found for free or at a small cost online. How often should they practise? One lesson a week is ideal, and practice really is up to the individual, but obviously the more your child practices, the faster they will improve. How does learning music benefit a young person? Academic studies: Learning a musical instrument is proven to help your child in school-related activities. If they are learning about beat, rhythm and rhyme, in essence, they are also learning how to divide, create fractions and recognise patterns. Studying music and lyrics will also help to improve a child’s short-term memory and, if continued, their long-term memory too. It’s also widely believed that the scientific principles of strumming a guitar or playing a violin can aid the basic understanding of subjects such as physics. Physicality: Learning instruments such as the drums, percussion or even the double bass can help youngsters develop physically
too. Co-ordination and motor skills benefit most specifically, yet in addition, a lot of instruments are high energy, helping your child enjoy and feel the creative flow of the activity, while letting off excess energy! Also, learning to cope with uncomfortable positions for short periods of time helps increase ambidexterity and timing. Patience: Your child will also learn the key components of patience and delayed gratification. Learning to play with others at different levels is one of the key elements of contemporary music and helps increase acceptance levels in the young. In addition, some tricky instruments like the violin or piano have a steep learning curve, so it teaches young people adult traits at an earlier age, giving them an advantage as they move through into adulthood. Self-esteem: Mastering a tricky art form is a major self-esteem booster. Thinking about cost Music lessons can vary quite considerably in price, ranging from £15 up to £40, depending on the quality of the teacher or location. So shop around for the teacher who will be best for your child. Choose your instrument and teacher carefully, and the craft of learning an instrument is a gift you can give your little one that will last forever!

Parents’ place Research confirms new dads’ mental health concerns
A new poll reveals almost 40% of men experience anxieties after having children. The research released by the Priory Group of Harley Street, London also claims to show that thousands of men experience anxiety – and in some cases depression – as they enter fatherhood. One in five men believed they were actually suffering from
familiesonline.co.uk
Paternal Post Natal Depression, although only 2% were officially diagnosed. This accords with earlier research by the parenting charity the NCT, which showed around 1 in 3 new fathers are concerned about their mental health. The increased pressures of fatherhood, more financial responsibility, changes in relationships and lifestyle, combined with a lack of sleep and an increased workload at home, may all affect a new dad’s mental wellbeing. Concern about their partner is another worry for new fathers. The NCT found that almost three quarters (73%) of dads were worried about their partner’s mental health. Parents’ place Putting your children first By Phillip Rhodes, partner and mediator at Manchester and Cheshire law firm Slater Heelis LLP.
If you and your partner have decided to separate or divorce, it can often seem like a daunting prospect with the potential to be a long and complex process. Separating when children are involved can be especially unsettling for the whole family. Family mediation is a way of resolving any disputes privately without going through the courts and allows you to work together to decide how life will look in the future for you and your children. Professional, impartial mediators will make every effort to help ensure that your children are put at the heart of all arrangements. What is mediation? Mediation ensures that you stay in control by helping you and your former partner make your own choices and decisions
about your future. The mediator will facilitate discussions that help you find a solution which is right for everyone involved. Family mediation can be quicker, less stressful and more cost effective than traditional litigation. It allows you the flexibility to have informed conversations about your options and the best solution for your family. How does it work? A mediator will listen to you and your former partner to discuss any concerns and issues you have as a result of your relationship ending – whether in relation to arrangements for children, family finances and/ or the practicalities of how life will work in the future. The mediator will facilitate those discussions and help you to make your own decisions in a managed,
secure and safe environment, both in individual sessions and together with your former partner. All of our family mediators at Slater Heelis are qualified Resolution family lawyers, and have a thorough understanding of the legal issues which are likely to arise when relationships break down. It is important to note that mediation sessions do not take the place of independent advice and both partners are encouraged to take advice from solicitors alongside the process. Everything you say in a mediation session remains confidential. Most mediations will take between three and five sessions, each one lasting between one and two hours depending on your circumstances. The process is often much quicker, more cost effective and, in most cases, more likely to offer an outcome that suits both partners as opposed to traditional court proceedings. This is even more important now, as recent closures of local county and magistrates’ courts have resulted in increasingly long delays. Child focused Children’s feelings are often at the forefront of parents’ minds when separating. Mediation can help you and your former partner focus on your children’s best interests, with the result
that any agreement is more likely to ensure their future security and happiness. Children can participate in mediation sessions on the condition that everyone, including the child, agrees to it, and only where the mediator has obtained additional qualifications to allow this. The mediator is there to help you and your former partner in a co-parenting context, agreeing living arrangements for your children and agreeing suitable financial arrangements to provide for your children after a divorce or separation. They are focused on the most pragmatic and child-friendly solutions. What happens afterwards? Once you are both satisfied with the decisions reached in mediation, the mediator will prepare a number of documents for a solicitor to complete any necessary legal formalities. These documents can then become legally binding and allow you to carry on with your life separate from your partner, whilst ensuring that your children’s lives remain stable. To speak to Phillip Rhodes, confidentially, about your situation call 0161 672 1415 or email phillip.rhodes@ slaterheelis.co.uk Visit www.slaterheelis.co.uk for more information.

Parents’ place Could shared parental leave work for you? By Mandy Garner
Shared Parental Leave (SPL) allows parents to share time off work during the first year after their child is born, with dads and mums both taking some of the leave, whilst being paid at a statutory rate. When Craig Curran and Sarah Farquharson looked into sharing the time off after their baby was born they couldn’t believe their luck. They both worked for Virgin Money which offered enhanced shared parental pay for parents on SPL – meaning they would receive a higher level of pay than the statutory rate. Sarah also earned more than Craig so it made better financial sense for Craig to share the leave with her. Even better, the couple were able to take a month of leave together – Sarah took the first five months of leave alone, the couple shared the sixth month and Craig took the last two months. The result for Craig and Sarah has been a closer family relationship
and a greater sharing of parental responsibilities – with neither parent’s career suffering as a result. Sarah was promoted just after she found out she was pregnant whilst Craig returned from his leave to a promotion. “If anyone asks me about it, I say just do it. You never get that time again” says Craig. “I would 100% do it again.” Both Craig and Sarah report that their managers and colleagues were very supportive of their leave plans. However, that is not always the case. In its annual survey Workingmums.co.uk found that only 37% of respondents said they would consider taking SPL. The majority would not. Some of the reasons given were the negative impact on household finances, fears that the dad’s career would suffer and a lack of knowledge about SPL. Some 43% of respondents said they wouldn’t take SPL because it would not make sense financially but the majority of these said
that even enhanced SPL pay wouldn’t make a difference to their decision. Clearly, the suggestion is that other non-financial factors are at play, such as the desire many women have to spend as much time as possible with their baby. 17% of mums said they didn’t want to share their leave. What SPL does is give parents greater choice over how they manage the care of their new born child and it can be an important building block in facilitating change in discriminatory working environments. However, take up remains very low nationally, possibly because the legislation is complex and dry. HR managers are recommending that the language is simplified and that managers are given tools they need to implement SPL, as well as being able to give concrete case studies which show the many different ways in which SPL can be taken: in one chunk or in separate blocks over a period of time; overlapping with the mother for all or part of the leave and so forth. Being able to read about other parents’ experiences brings the whole process to life. One of the benefits of SPL is that dads who have taken it feel much more confident about being in sole charge of their children. They also have a greater sense of empathy about what looking after a baby involves, and there can also be
a positive impact on mental wellbeing. One dad who took SPL is John Birrell from the law firm Berwin Leighton Paisner. His wife went through a traumatic emergency C-section followed by hospitalisation for an infection. Having her husband to share the months after the birth meant she was not left on her own to recover from major surgery while doing the physically exhausting work of looking after a young child. “Mental health is too often ignored and post-natal depression must be one of the most common forms,” says John. Workingmums.co.uk collaborated recently with dads website www.daddilife.com on a series of videos highlighting the need for parents to have open conversations around Shared Parental Leave. One couple who took part are Eulalia Pereira and Martin Stopher from London. Eulalia said: “As a mother there is a sense you should be doing everything. I know (as a result of taking SPL) that Martin on a day to day basis is there, that he is involved with the kids. I could not have hoped for more.” Mandy Garner is editor of www.workingmums.co.uk, a platform dedicated to finding flexible, challenging work for mums. To view videos in which three couples discuss their choice to take Shared Parental Leave, take a look at the Workingmums.co.uk Youtube Channel.
