And now that Easter is done and dusted, it’s really time to book some summer holiday camps for the children so we give you a round up of some of the best in Birmingham and Solihull. Sue Morrow-Jones is running Creation Station activities for pre-schoolers at The Methodist Church Hall in Sutton Coldfield on Monday mornings; the Scout Hall in Streetly on Thursday mornings; and Aldridge and Shenstone on Wednesdays and Fridays. Creation Station is all about inspiring the imagination and having fun through creative arts and crafts and, because it’s developed in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage, it’s educational too. Sue, a mum of two children who are both in secondary school, says: “I loved the idea of the Creation Station because when my two children were young I looked for something like this and couldn’t find it. It’s fantastic that the children can learn while they’re having messy art time! Full steam ahead for vintage rail weekend Head to Tyseley on June 25 and 26 to give the children a ride on a good old-fashioned steam train. Mums mean

D

o you want to achieve a better work-life balance without the 9-5 grind?

In our last issue we featured Natalie Heeley from Forever Living products who managed to do just that and, judging by the reaction from readers, it obviously struck a chord. So this issue we are featuring a selection of mums who took the plunge and went into business – setting up on their own – or taking on a franchise. And we also highlight some opportunities available to you if you want to run your own flexible business that fits with family life.

Working from home with ‘Jamie at home’ Two years ago Heather Beverley was a full time mum to James and Oliver wondering what she was going to do when her youngest started school. Today she is a Senior Team Manager with Jamie at home supporting her own team, three Team Leaders and about 60 consultants. And she does it all while working from home. “Having been a stay-at-home mum I knew I didn’t want to go back to full time work because I wanted to be there for the children. Then someone told me about the Jamie at home direct sales business and it was perfect because I knew I would be able to carry on being a mum while still earning fantastic money. School holidays are never a problem and when I go out to “work” it is usually in the evening when my partner is home.” Jamie at home offers contemporary designer ranges of kitchen and dining ware. Heather says: “It costs just £100 to start up and there is no tie-in so there is no risk. For £100, you get £400 worth of products to show at a party – and if you find you don’t like it, you can walk away.

1,500

“It helps if you are an outgoing personality, and you are self employed so you have to be self motivated. But you are part of a team so you are never alone. “A consultant doing two ‘average’ parties a week earns between £500/£600 a month, however the earnings potential is much higher.” Call Heather for a chat on 07809 749430 to find out more about joining the team or hosting a Jamie at home party.

Bumpalicious glamour for mums-to-be Moseley mum and former lawyer Amanda Rees has just launched online maternity shop Bumpalicious Maternity, stocking chic maternity wear which you won’t find on the High Street.

If a rewarding job with true security that provides you with the work/life balance, flexibility and control over your own destiny sounds appealing – contact Natalie Heeley today. You can work part time, around your existing work or family commitments and there is no financial investment. Find out how Natalie’s children can always be her priority – working part-time hours to suit her family commitments – you too could change your life.

Amanda worked as a commercial real estate lawyer for years, before deciding she wanted a lifestyle that fitted in better with being a mum to Grace, 8, and Neave, 4. “When I was pregnant with Neave I recognised there was a gap in the market for stylish maternity wear pitched somewhere between the high street brands and very expensive designer maternity wear. I think mums should be able to revel in being pregnant without compromising on style or glamour – and that’s what Bumpalicious Maternity is all about,” she says. The online store stocks fashionable clothing from everyday casual leisure wear to special occasion dresses, including office wear; swimwear and holiday clothing; and even nightwear. It features UK labels such as Crave Maternity and Fun Mum but is also sourcing clothes from Europe - the German brand Belly Button - and even from the Australian range Ripe. Designs are hip and stylish but the prices are very reasonable. Check out Bumpalicious on www.bumpaliciousmaternity.co.uk

business Hard Work in Maths and English Pays Off As any mum will know, it is a challenge to manage a busy household with three children and keep down a full time job. But add to that a mix of co-founding an entrepreneurial business and winning three awards and this is exactly what Anita Dhunna has achieved. Key Stages Online is a tutoring service which helps children aged between 8 and 11 improve their maths and English skills. It was founded by Anita and her husband Aron in 2004, the aim being to ensure children are ready for secondary school and selection tests used in grammar and independent schools. Anita and KSOL have grown from a small locally-based organisation to a nationally recognised provider of educational material. Commenting on the success of KSOL Anita said: “There is flexibility when you are working in your own business, but it is certainly not a 9 to 5 job. There is a lot of hard work involved in moving a business forward and sometimes it feels like 24/7.” “Juggling a family and a business isn’t always easy but the children have seen the business grow from small beginnings and they know that hard work pays off in the end.” That’s a good message too for children as they work on their core skills in Maths and English! To find out more about KSOL call 0121 244 8605.

Education

www.familiesbirmingham.co.uk

Testing times for pupil’s

L

ove them or loathe them, SATs tests have been controversial since they were first introduced for 7-year-olds in 1991.

Previous generations of pupils have faced SATs tests at 7, 11 and 14 (tests at 14 have now been scrapped) before heading into three years of external exams with GCSE’s at 16, AS levels at 17 and A-levels at 18, earning them the dubious distinction of being among the most tested pupils in the world. No other country in the western world is as focused as the English on testing primary age pupils and producing school league tables, according to a 2008 study. The rationale behind the tests and the league tables are to hold schools accountable and to drive standards up by giving parents the power to choose schools based on their performance. Many parents do indeed use SATs tests results to judge a school, scouring the performance tables produced annually by the Department for Education to see which school is the ‘top’ in their area. The tables include other factors like value added scores - which looks at the schools’ impact in raising a pupils’ achievement beyond the expected level, taking into account the ‘baseline assessment’ of a pupil on entering the school. But the reality is that most parents hone in on raw SATs results. This puts pressure on schools to make sure all pupils reach, or indeed outperform, the expected ‘level 2’ at aged 7, and ‘level 4’ at age 11 so they can secure a good place in the league table. No one would argue about the need for schools to be accountable or the need to have high expectations for all pupils, but the unintended outcome of SATs and league tables is that many schools have felt under pressure to ‘teach to the test’ and are drilling pupils to do well in the exam. That pressure in turn filters down to the pupils. Education Secretary Michael Gove has now ordered an independent review of SATs for 11-year-olds in response to concerns that the system is flawed and is damaging rather than enhancing children’s education. But while the system is likely to be changed for future years, the 2011 SATS tests for year 6 pupils will still go ahead on the week of May 9.

So what are the DO’s and DON’Ts to make sure your child takes it all in their stride? • Don’t let your child pick up on any anxieties YOU have about the tests • Don’t abandon all their usual after school activities in test week • Don’t try last minute cramming or overdo the practice papers at home.

On the other hand:

• Do make sure they get to bed on time and are fully rested (not always easy with lighter evenings) • Do reassure them you will be happy as long as they try their best • Do plan a fun and relaxing treat they can look forward to post-SATs.

Trial 11 plus helps beat exam nerves Is your child taking the 11 plus exam for grammar school in November or an entrance test for an independent school? If so experiencing a trial test in a live exam setting will help steady their nerves when it comes to the real deal. The tutor service KSOL – Keystages On Line – is running a mock exam in Shirley on May 21 for prospective grammar and independent school candidates which is open to any child in year 5. The exam gives children the chance to have a go at doing a test in an unfamiliar location surrounded by children from many other primary schools. It should help to make the real event a far less scary prospect and minimise the chance of nerves getting the better of your child on the day of their actual exam. KSOL runs a free seminar for parents of pupils attending the mock exam and after the papers have been marked they also give parents detailed written feedback about their child’s performance in the exam and where they are relative to others who will be taking the 11 plus along with them. KSOL director Aron Dhunna says: “We break down the exams and identify the areas in which a child is making mistakes and we suggest techniques they can use to improve their skill set. It is a fantastic way to prepare children for an exam and to identify strengths and any areas of weakness.” The exam costs £40 for KSOL members or £45 for non members, and for a small additional fee of £10 KSOL can arrange for parents and pupils to have a one-to-one feedback session with a tutor at one of their centres. There are three centres in Birmingham in Shirley, Handsworth and Sutton Coldfield.

It’s a stress-free, hassle-free party for parents and children love it,” says Helen. “We banish mum or dad from the kitchen so they can relax while the children make all their own food – with the pizza they roll their own pizzas and add their favourite toppings; and they also make their dessert and decorate cupcakes for their party bags. “It’s great fun and the children really do enjoy the cooking. Nannies

www.familiesbirmingham.co.uk

When the person you need is Nanny..

B

usy working mums like the reassurance and reliability of having a nanny – and nannies are very cost effective too. Jayne Dainty, MD of West Midlands nanny agency, Tinies, looks after more than 400 nannies on her books, and she and her team are kept very busy finding the perfect childcare solution for Tinies’ families. “Nannies become such a treasured part of a family, so we work hard to get the perfect match,” says Jayne. The advantage of a nanny is that children never have to miss a playdate and can still join clubs or classes even though Mum is at work. And it works for parents, too, who appreciate the flexibility a nanny offers and love knowing that their children are being looked after by a professional in their own home, even when they are ill. As well as providing full and part-time nannies for working mums, Tinies also provides nannies to organise crèche facilities at weddings, for corporate functions and at council-run events. The agency also offers “wrap around care” which is much in demand with parents looking for an after-school nanny service.
