elcome to the summer issue of Families Birmingham, Solihull and Sutton Coldfield magazine.

While children (and teachers too) count down to those gloriously long days of freedom during the school holidays, parents are no doubt gearing up for some madly energetic days at home and away with a brood who are intent on letting off steam outside the confines of the classroom and daily routine. So in this issue we focus on summer time – what’s on, places to go and things to do. We guarantee you will get ideas for some fantastic family days out. Find out about summer camps and fun workshops for children; read our comprehensive A-Z guide of places to go for days out; find out what’s on in the theatre or the best places to go for free or almost free fun (tip – family-friendly museums at Birmingham’s heritage sites and at the Herbert in Coventry are great places to start). If sometimes over the summer you feel as if you are muddling through as a parent amid the chaos of summer and sibling squabbles, fear not. Just read If You Forget Everything Else, Remember This - a humorous and down to earth look at parenting through the primary school years by Katharine Hill, author of a new parenting book. But it’s not all about the kids. You should also read our interview with Relate Counsellor Denise Knowles who tells parents they must not feel guilty about postponing housework to find the time to spend with their other half, and to find some precious me time. So, whatever you and your family do for the summer holidays this year, we hope you relax and enjoy it.

Junk the junk!

E

ight out of ten families hang on to items they consider junk and households with children are the worst offenders, storing enough junk to cover almost five square metres of floor space on average.

If you store junk, you lose space. Five square metres accounts for six per cent of the floor space in a modern three bedroom house and is equivalent to the space taken up by a king sized bed. Worse still, more than one third of families admit to having enough junk to fill a small bedroom! Put like that is sounds daft, but it is easy to see why a family can accumulate unwanted ‘stuff’. Old clothes, books, media and toys and games are the most frequently cited examples of junk stashed by families. More than half of families (56 per cent) hang on to old clothes, 54 per cent keep old books, video tapes and magazines, while 48 per cent hang on to old toys and games. Families struggling for space are less likely to hang on to larger items, with only a quarter admitting to retaining old

furniture. Rob Linton, operations director at Clearabee who conducted the survey, said: “In a nation where space is at a premium, it is staggering that almost one in three families are storing enough useless junk to fill an entire room. The cost of it in terms of lost property space is not far off £10,000 per family.” The survey revealed that families store discarded items in a range of nooks and crannies, with barely a place in the house where unwanted items were not stored. Attics, lofts, under the wardrobe or the bed, sheds, garages and under the stairs cupboards are all utilised. One person’s junk is potentially another’s treasure, so it is always worth re-homing it. You can sell items on e-bay; take it to a charity shop, or call a freecycling service. Or firms like Clearabee can help families

get rid of their junk in a matter of hours and ensure it’s recycled and disposed of properly. If it all feels just like too much hassle, just think of the clear space ...

Meet Igglepiggle at Night Garden Live It is fantastic to watch your child’s face when a live show starts and you see they are instantly and totally entranced. I can still remember that moment when I took my child to her first theatre show. More than half a million parents have taken their children to the Night Garden Live show and 9 out of 10 have given it a five star review. So don’t miss taking your little one along this summer to see the show at Cannon Hill Park in Edgbaston. Whether your tiny tot is already a seasoned theatre-goer or a first-timer this show will work it’s magic, even for babes in arms. The show is staged in a special all-weather Showdome and makes use of panoramic

projections to make it feel like you’re actually inside the Night Garden. Your children will see Igglepiggle, Upsy Daisy and Makka Pakka brought to life with beautiful costumes and puppetry. The show’s producer Andrew Collier says: “Children as young as a few months old engage with the live show, and the looks on the faces of the children and parents are absolutely amazing.” The show runs from July 11 to July 25 at Cannon Hill Park. Book online now at www. NightGardenLive.com or call 0333 300 0015. Use discount code MEET65R for a Families discount.

Party with Peppa Pig Peppa Pig and younger brother George will be dropping in to the Botanical Gardens in Birmingham to greet some young fans. The costumed pair will be making personal appearances and meeting young guests on Wednedsay, August 19. Tickets for the family event are £25 for a family of 5 (or one adult and 4 children), and the cost includes a bonus six months free membership of the Gardens from August through to 2016. Get the tickets early and you can make several visits to the Gardens for their fun-themed family activity days in summer.

For example on Monday, August 10, the Gardens host a family circus day with platespinning, juggling and fun in the Big Top. (Circus ticket £4). On Thursday, August 26, there will be a special Teddy Bears’ picnic and pirate fete. Children are invited to bring their teddy for a treasure hunt around the garden; have fun on the bouncy castle; get their faces painted and get stuck in with arts and crafts activities.

Tamworth Castle

– a great family day out

L

ook back over 900 years of history and enjoy a great family day out at awardwinning Tamworth Castle – one of the most stunning examples in the UK of a complete castle. You can get a real feel for how life was lived in its draughty, old chambers and corridors, especially during the living history days which are ideal for families. Meet characters as you wander round the castle and let your children see for themselves how the occupants lived out their daily lives, from the nobility and grand families to the hard working servants. Saxons, Normans, Tudors and Victorians all helped shape the building’s history. Visit the grand dining room set for a Tudor banquet and the day parlour where nobles would gather before feasting. Look out from the Tower, before descending into the reputedly haunted, wood panelled lady’s chamber (Well, every self-respecting, ancient castle should have a ghost!). Cross the parapet into the Elizabethan wing before leaping forward into Victorian times with rooms depicting life for the last inhabitants of Tamworth Castle. Whenever you visit there is something for everyone with interactive displays and areas where children can try on armour and get hands-on with activities. There’s also the chance to see items from the world famous Staffordshire Hoard - pieces of the gold, found on Tamworth’s doorstep, are on permanent display alongside elaborate replicas commissioned by the castle. There’s just as much to see and do outside in the wonderful, landscaped castle grounds. Take a riverside stroll along the River Thame, have a picnic, hire bicycles or play crazy golf. Relax while the children play in the enclosed outdoor play park equipped with a huge castle and pirate ship. You’ll have trouble dragging them away from the fun they’re having! Log on to www.tamworthcastle.co.uk for an up-to-date list of summer events, or call 01827 709 626.

Thinktank - A Spitfire Summer

I

f you visit Thinktank this summer head to the new Spitfire Gallery where you will see a plane suspended in space.

This is a real example of one of the 10,000 Spitfire planes made at Birmingham’s Castle Bromwich factory. The new gallery at Thinktank tells the story of the men and women who worked on the machines in the war years. You can borrow a Spitfire family pack to help explore the gallery and there is even a Spitfire story book especially created for 3-8 year olds. As always, there will be plenty to see and do at Thinktank for all the family. The awardwinning attraction is home to Birmingham’s only Planetarium; the interactive Science Garden with its giant-sized interactive exhibits; and the Kid’s City Gallery designed for children under 7 where families can learn and play together. You can also visit the Animate It studio and star in your own Shaun the Sheep Adventure using stopmotion technology.

At the We Made It Gallery find out what links a car and a cow, what makes treasure like jewellery valuable, why we use certain types of packaging, and how products are held together. As always throughout the school holidays, there will be a special programme of family-friendly activities including ‘Spitfire Storytelling’, ‘Science Busking’, and ‘Meet the Experts’ (where you can meet real scientists from innovative engineers to doctors working at the forefront of the physical sciences’.) For full details see www.thinktank.ac

Seven secret doors at Shugborough What will you find this school holiday behind Shugborough’s seven secret doors? There are seven secret doors in the Shugborough estate’s beautiful gardens which make for an adventurous exploration for children on a summer mission. Each door (all of them in plain sight but off the main visitor paths) leads to a magical place in the gardens with ‘something different and spell-binding’ behind each door. Shugborough, the UK’s only working historic estate, is in Staffordshire, within easy striking distance of Birmingham for a family day out. Send the children on a quest to find the secret doors; marvel at the follies; wander through the arboretum and explore the magnificent Georgian

mansion and servant’s quarters. There’s plenty more for children to see and do including take a train ride; feed the animals on the working farm – and play pooh sticks. Find maps at the reception to help you find the seven secret doors and post those you find on Facebook or Twitter and decide which door hides the most magical of places. www.shugborough.org.uk

The story of children’s TV D

o you remember the Wombles of Wimbledon? Gordon Gopher? Rastamouse? Or the singing veggies from Mr Bloom’s nursery? And what are your children watching now?

The chances are at least one of the characters mentioned above will have been a familiar part of your childhood – just as Igglepiggle and Upsy Daisy or the Octonauts are to young people today. Generations of children have fallen in love with characters and stories brought to life on the small screen, and this summer you can take a nostalgic trip down memory lane with the Story of Children’s Television exhibition at the Herbert Art Gallery in Coventry.

The family-friendly, interactive exhibition traces the history of children’s TV across seven decades from the earliest days of Watch with Mother and Muffin the Mule through to today’s favourite programmes. Enjoy the memorabilia and original props, and learn how programmes from puppets to live shows, to dramas and fantasy were created. The Story of Children’s Television is the story of all of our childhoods, and how television

helped to shape the way we view the world around us. It will appeal to both adults and children. Watch out too for the many themed workshops for children and families which will be run at the Gallery over the summer holidays in conjunction with the show. The exhibition is free with a small charge for some activities. Check online to see which activities are free drop-in events which do need to be pre-booked. www.theherbert.org.uk

Could you offer a young person in need a caring foster home?

A

cross Birmingham many young people whose lives are disrupted by family breakdown face further challenges in finding a place to stay where they will be cared for.

Bromsgrove-based Foster Care Associates (FCA) is appealing for potential new carers to consider taking on these young people in their step-down fostering scheme – an alternative to being placed in residential care. The leading UK’s independent fostering agency believes that every child and young person deserves to live as part of a family. Step-down fostering offers young people in or at risk of entering residential care the chance to live in a stable, nurturing foster family placement. Working closely with local authorities the scheme gives children and young people with a history of placement breakdowns a second chance at family life. Norma Etherington, from Droitwich, Worcestershire, has been a foster carer for 34 years and was among the first to be trained in Foster Care Associates’ (FCA) specialist step-down placement scheme. She said: “Like any placement

it is about making the right match, and when I met my first young person on the programme I knew it would work. Very quickly they became part of the family. Having spent a long time in residential units, these children are looking at families from the outside, like looking through a window, and they so deserve to be part of one.” Roy Murray, registered manager for FCA Midlands, said: “We’ve been working with vulnerable children for 21 years and our experience shows that one-to-one support in a family setting is the best way to help these children overcome their issues and deal with their past. Our team of social care professionals work closely with our foster carers to deliver intensive, holistic support tailored to the individual needs of each young person and carer.” For more information on becoming a foster carer with FCA call 0800 023 4561 or visit www.thefca.co.uk. FCA will also be holding an information event at Star City on Friday, August 21, between 10am and 4pm – just turn up on the day to find out more about fostering.

Family day for young people with arthritis Mention arthritis and the chances are you think of a grandparent or an elderly person. But every year 2,500 children in the UK are diagnosed with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). Although arthritis is a lifelong condition if diagnosed and treated effectively, children can be helped to manage the condition and it does not have to limit their lifestyle. Young people with arthritis have gone on to university, become singers and even taken part in top level sport. Last year the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society launched a support service for children and young people with juvenile arthritis. This summer it is holding an annual Family Day on Saturday July 18, at The Heart of England

Conference Centre, Fillongley, Coventry. It is a chance for children and young people with arthritis and their families to meet others who understand the issues they face, as well as being a chance to have fun and talk to paediatric rheumatology experts. There will be quod pods, swan pedalos, pirate ship rides and kids activities and families can enjoy all the fun of the seaside, take a dip in the lake, relax and soak up the sun and enjoy an afternoon tea. You can book your free place now or call Nicky Freemantle on 01628 823524 for more information. Find out more about JIA-at-NRAS at www.jia.org.uk

Gold Award for Ironbridge Ironbridge Gorge in Shropshire – a world heritage site with 10 museums within a six square mile radius – has scooped a coveted VisitEngland Gold Award for the best large visitor attractions. Blists Hill, the re-created Victorian Town, one of the main attractions at Ironbridge, is geared up for families. Children can exchange money at the bank at Blists Hill for the old pounds, shillings and pence, and visit the grocers, the bakers, the drapers and the pharmacy – and the old sweet shop. They can take a look inside the Victorian cottages and see costumed characters go about their daily lives; take a trip around the town on a horse and cart; dress up in Victorian costume and have their photograph taken at the

photographers; and have fun on the traditional merry-go-round and fairground rides. The family-friendly museum also runs workshops for children (for example, candle dipping) and they have special themed events throughout the year, including this year a summer barbecue, a county fair, a new fashion week; a Meccano event and an Oliver Twist weekend. Fancy driving a train, or piloting a plane? F

ancy piloting a Cessna over Las Vegas, landing a sea plane on the ocean, or getting behind the controls of a speeding train?

The place to go is Birmingham’s newest family attraction – the Wonderful World of Trains and Planes – where you can travel the world without even needing your passport. There is an array of model railway displays from a sleepy village in 1930s England to a town in post-war Germany, then on to Canada and Japan. See the great trains of the past – the Orient Express, Flying Scotsman, Mallard, Golden Arrow, the Royal Train, the Rheingold Express – and then the modern turbo charged TGV, the Eurostar, and the Japanese Shinkansen. Children can get behind the controls of their own model train (driver’s cap too) at Little Train Drivers’ world with four controls operating different trains along the tracks of a Hornby Exhibition model (expect to wait your turn at busy times). Then you can try your hand on a four-lane car race circuit, testing your racing skills against your friends as you hurtle along the track. Older children can head for the realistic flight simulators to fly planes from a single engined Cessna to a Boeing 747 over a number of famous cities, airports and runways. Can you hold your nerve in the cockpit whilst landing in JFK? Or you can even come in to land at Birmingham International Airport. Just don’t crash! For safety reasons, every child should be able to swim so it is important that parents who can’t swim or are reluctant swimmers don’t instil children with their own fears. Summer is a great time for encouraging children to swim – especially with the prospect of being able to show off their new-found skills in a holiday pool. Before you go, sign them up for an intensive swim course with a daily swim lesson for a week. It’s a surefire way of sending confidence levels soaring. SwimSeal’s vox pop also found adults who won’t swim because they hate the sensation of water being stuck in their ears or they are prone to ear infections, or they are worried about their hair. But there are practical solutions with earplugs or natural eardrops and good haircare products which can overcome these issues.

Have you got what it takes to be a secret agent? Your mission if you choose to accept it is to spend a week this summer taking part in a dramatic story of espionage. The Birmingham Rep is recruiting 7-12 year olds for a week working with professional theatre directors and taking part in games, improvisations and drama workshops. The theme of the week is espionage. Expect to follow suspects, bug telephones, create secret identities and learn how to spy unobtrusively. It will grip the imagination of children and teens who loved the Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins, and add a spark to the summer for those who have not yet encountered the books or the movies. It is the second year that Playbox has chosen the Hunger Games theme – an ideal vehicle for allowing children to act in an exciting drama and also to teach physical stage skills. Anyone who

has read the books or seen the movies knows it is an action drama! All you need to take part in the summer school is an interest in live theatre and to be aged between 9 and 18. Don’t wait to book your place. The Hunger Games theatre summer school runs between Monday, July 27, and Friday, July 31, between 10am and 4.30pm. There is a performance for parents and guests at 3.30pm on July 31. To find out more or to book call 0121 704 6962 or log on to www.solihullartscomplex. co.uk

When baby makes three...

A

s a couple you are looking forward to the arrival of the new baby and you have never felt as close as you do now contemplating future life as a real family. But what many couples don’t realise is quite how much their lives can be turned upside down by this pint-sized new arrival... Your mewling ‘bundle of joy’ is now calling all the shots, demanding to be fed, winded, bathed, cuddled and entertained, and your time is no longer your own. As a couple you promised yourselves that having a baby wouldn’t change your lifestyle but, however organised and efficient you have always been, you are now sailing in uncharted territory and at times you probably feel rudderless. Both you and your partner adore the baby and are keen to be the best possible parents and that is where you focus all your energies. But, as Denise Knowles of Relate advises, in the excitement and exhaustion of life as new parents, you must also carve out time for your other half and nurture your own relationship as a couple. Denise suggests: “Sometimes a mum or dad can feel neglected or pushed out. Generally, new dads want to be involved much more than we really appreciate, or sometimes mums feel they have to do it all.” The pressure to be the perfect parent, combined with sleep deprivation, and possibly growing resentment by a mother who feels she is carrying most of the weight, or a dad who feels he is being pushed out, can put a strain on many relationships. Denise warns that unless couples work through any issues arising from the new family dynamic, cracks can start appearing in their relationship reaching a crisis point eighteen months or two years down the road. According to Denise, who has counselled many couples at Relate, communication and staying in touch (literally as well as figuratively) with your other half is key to keeping the spark alive

in your relationship and working through the inevitable teething problems of being a new family. “One of the things I want to say is ‘don’t lose touch with one another’. Even if you don’t have a great deal of time, spend some time together. Don’t feel guilty about postponing the washing, ironing or cleaning to create time for being a couple.” “Take time to hug or cuddle one another; and think about giving your partner a gift on a daily basis. and thinking about how to improve your chances of celebrating a golden anniversary. Don’t lose sight of your relationship and stay in touch with your feelings for one another. It might seem like an eternity away, but your babies will soon fly the nest while your partner can still be there for you.

Denise adds: “It is important to be able to develop trusted support networks so that you can leave the baby even if it is only to pop out together for an hour for a walk. It doesn’t cost you money but it gives you the space and privacy to really talk to one another. Don’t always talk about the baby. Remember that you are a person in your own right and don’t forget your own dreams and aspirations.” Denise recommends that as well as finding couples time, the most contented parents will also find ways of allowing each other some space for individual interests and time to maintain their own friendships. “To be a good parent you need to be true to yourself,” she says.

If you are having problems in a relationship you can approach Relate for counselling. They offer online counselling and support as well as seeing couples or individuals. You can get relationship support as an individual even if your partner does not want to attend counselling. For more information see www.relate.org.uk

As a new mum, tired, busy, possibly having returned to work, short of time and money, the idea that not only do you have to look after your baby but that your adult partner also needs your attention could be like red rag to a bull. That’s certainly how I felt as a new mum when a relative dared to suggest I needed to give more time to my partner. But, before you have a rant at the unfairness of being burdened with yet another responsibility when you are feeling overwhelmed, pause for a minute.

• • • • •

For a start this cuts both ways, parents need to look after one another as well as looking after the baby – there is balance here and shared responsibility. If you still think you have not got time to look after your partner – ‘he/she is an adult after all’ – then you should reflect a little on some sobering statistics. Forty two per cent of marriages end in divorce; and half of divorces involve children under 16. Between a fourth and an eighth wedding anniversary, a couple’s chances of getting divorced the next year is more than 3 per cent. So if, ideally, you would like to grow old with your other half it is worth breaking through the fog that accompanies new parenthood

If you forget everythin K atharine Hill, mother of four grown up children and Director of the UK charity Family Care, debunks the myth of Supermum in her humorous and down to earth new book If You Forget Everything Else Remember This .... Katharine says: “From that first angelic role in the nativity play to that first love, from broken hearts and best friendships to school bullies, life as a parent is an emotional roller coaster. And amidst the practical chaos of finding swimming goggles, making packed lunches, cleaning out the rabbit hutch and refereeing sibling squabbles, many of us long for help, for a little wisdom to help us do the job well.” So, here are some bite-sized bits of wisdom from Katharine to help you navigate through the primary years.

There’s no point trying to be Supermum or Dad! Being a parent is one of the most important and challenging roles that we can have and deserves our very best efforts. But we need to dispel once and for all the myth of Supermum. And if we can acknowledge that parenting is not a spectator sport, it means that we can be free of the pressure to perform. Let’s lay down the comparisons, be real about both the joys and the challenges, decide how we want to parent in our particular family situation – and then simply do our best. We have nothing to prove. There really is no pressure to be a superhero.

Don’t look sideways As parents, we so often give into the temptation to look sideways and make a comparison but it only results in feelings of discouragement in the belief that others are doing a better job than you. While centile charts are useful for monitoring our children’s growth and development, and comparethemarket. com may help us land the best deal for car or travel insurance, comparison is not a good tool to keep in the toolbox of parenting.

Put your oxygen mask on first We’re all familiar with the aircraft safety announcement telling people to put their own oxygen masks on first before attending to their children. This direction may sound counter-intuitive for parents as we seem programmed to care for our children at all costs. But attending to our own needs first in an emergency on a plane means we have the air we need in order to help, support and care for our children in the most effective way. As parents, our heartfelt desire to do the very best for our children can be all-consuming. If we are not careful, the result of pouring ourselves totally into our children can be that we neglect to look after ourselves or fail to make time to invest in important adult relationships in our lives.

ng else remember this! Choose your battles

There are so many potential battles we could have with our children: ‘Tidy your bedroom’, Eat your crusts,’ ‘Keep the water in the bath’, ‘Wear your coat to school’, ‘Put your toys away’, ‘Come to the table’, ‘Keep out of the puddles’, ‘Brush your hair’, ‘Clean your teeth’, ‘Learn your spellings’, ‘Hang up your bag’, ‘Don’t pinch your sister’. Because the list is endless, if we make every issue a battle not only will we wear ourselves out, but more importantly, our children will never learn which things are really important.

Slow down, you’re moving too fast

Different families will have different pressures on their time and energies. There may be some things that are important and that we definitely want our children to do, and others that we are not so concerned about. The important thing is to find a rhythm that works for you. An unsuitable pace of life can creep up on us unawares. Take a stock check and ask yourself if you can keep going with your rhythm of life. If necessary, take drastic action to change things. Your children may not be at every club and activity, but you and they will have time to be.

There are so many ways to give encouragement to our children. As well as recognising their successes and achievements, perhaps we can give a word of praise to recognise our daughter’s character and effort. Or we could write a note of encouragement on the banana in our son’s lunch box saying, ‘You’ll be great on the team today – go you!’

Values are more often caught than taught

While we need to be real and not pretend to be anything we are not, the truth is that our children are watching. They notice if we stop and buy a Big Issue and give the vendor dignity. They notice if we point out if we have been undercharged when paying for something. They notice how we treat our friends, parents, and colleagues. The values we live by will be caught rather than taught. We sometimes worry that our children aren’t listening to us, but the sobering truth is that not a word or an action is lost.

Speak words of life

As our children move into the primary years, I have found it easy to slip into focussing on the negatives – nagging and pointing out what is wrong rather than spotting what is right and praising them for it.

If You Forget Everything Else Remember This by Katharine Hill retails at £7.50. It can be ordered online: www.careforthefamily.org.uk/shop/ parenting-books/if-you-forgeteverything-else-remember-thisparenting-in-the-primary-years

Say goodbye to sleepless nights! A sleep deprived dad-of-two has launched a ‘virtual lullaby’ app that just might be the answer to your prayers. Necessity was the father of invention as Rob despaired of ever getting a good night’s sleep when his toddler son kept waking in the middle of the night, only dropping off to sleep again at the sound of his dad’s voice. SleepHero, his new app, allows parents to record their own voices onto a mobile. The recording is then automatically activated when the child begins to stir or make a noise. It comes with a selection of nursery rhymes so all parents have to do is read the text on the screen and record their voice at the same time. Once recorded, parents set how much noise their child has to be making before the app starts to play and how long their child needs before the audio ceases to loop.

back to sleep was my own dulcet tones, which got me thinking. In most cases, nothing soothes a child like the sound of their parent’s voice. So I’ve taken this on board and over the last 12 months I have designed and tested a mobile solution to help both parents and their children get a good night’s sleep.” Designed for newborns up to age three plus, SleepHero is available on the App Store for iPhone, iPod and iPad. iTunes Download: https://appsto.re/gb/0IHY4.i www.sleepheroapp.com

Rob Tong, SleepHero’s creator, comments: “The app’s autopilot feature effectively takes the night shift, detecting when your little one is crying and plays audio at a volume you decide to settle him or her back down, leaving you to sleep in peace.” He adds: “My two year old son would wake during the night and the only thing that got him Issue 28

Make this a ‘RecordBreaking’ summer Make this a record-breaking summer! No, we are not talking about the weather here but a chance take part in a world record-breaking reading challenge. The Reading Agency and libraries across the UK will be launching their annual reading challenge, and this year they have teamed up with the Guinness Book of World Records and will be battling to make it a record-breaking year. Between July 10 and 13 local libraries will be inviting children aged 4-11 to make their pledge to read six or more library books of their choice during the summer holidays, and pre-schoolers can take part in a mini challenge. Each year the Summer Reading Challenge has a different theme – and the 2015 event brings together fact and fiction, challenging young readers to explore astonishing reallife achievements and world records.

As always, there will be collectable incentives and rewards plus a certificate or medal for every child who completes the challenge. Children can sign up at their local library at the start of the summer holidays – it’s fun and absolutely free. Collecting stickers as they go, young readers will discover the weird, wonderful and wacky records from around the world in six different categories: Cool Tech, Way to Go!, The Big Stuff, Animal Magic, People Power and Action! Adventure! Last year, over 800,000 children took part, nearly half of them boys! And teachers say that children who take part in the challenge return to school after the summer break as more fluent, confident and happy readers. This is fun, free and a fantastic way to support your child’s reading. Go for it.

An unsettling change for parents of special needs children Anita Chopra of Match Solicitors discusses Education Health and Care Plans: Change in the world of special needs is almost always a bad thing. In the struggle to secure any kind of extra help, whether it be for a child with mild dyslexia or a young person with a severe learning difficulty combined with complex health needs, parents face an invisible wall of resistance. It’s all about the money and it’s set to get worse with a new round of government cuts. Up to now, parents have been guided down a path well trodden by other carers to a Statement of Special Educational Needs (SSEN) that guaranteed their child the help they needed. That has now changed since the introduction of the Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP), and for parents just starting out on this journey, the change appears daunting. The fear is the same for first time applicants and for those transferring from a SSEN to an EHCP. The new forms can appear insurmountable and the time scales for appeals are pretty tight, being 2 months from the date of a decision given by a Local Authority. Parents can appeal if refused an Education Health and Care assessment or indeed if they get an EHCP but are not happy with the content. Either way, it can often be an emotionally draining experience for parents. The important thing is to get advice from an independent ‘advisor as directed by your LA’ or from an education solicitor. Pocket money woes!

I

t is now July and the money from Christmas gifts has all but run out so my daughter is facing a lean summertime.

The bank of mum and dad has been firmly shut after we instituted a system of chores for pocket money. The tasks set were certainly not onerous – tidy her bedroom and tidy her desk once a week – in exchange for a generous weekly allowance. It seemed like a fair exchange, and one which was likely to reduce the potential for arguments to boot. However in the past six months I have paid out on only three occasions as I have been the one doing the tidying. So, unless relatives step in to rescue her, she has a choice – a cash-strapped summer or taking on the responsibility of tidying up after herself! Indeed it seems that my daughter will not be alone in feeling the pinch this summer as the annual pocket money survey from Halifax reveals that the average pocket money given to children is down for the second year in a row. West Midlands children seem to be among the biggest losers with a 9 per cent cut year on year. The average weekly pocket money in the West Midlands is now £5.45, down from £6.03 last year.

1,500

Interestingly, the survey found that more than 70 per cent of children save at least some of their pocket money, with a thrifty one in ten saving all of it. Rather more worryingly, there appears to be a gender imbalance in money received, with boys getting more than girls. Overall, about twenty per cent of children nationwide are expected to do chores for pocket money. Giles Martin, Head of Halifax Savings, said: “Giving pocket money is a great tool to help children understand the value of money and why it is important to save.” I am confident we will get to the savings stage (eventually), but this summer our newly-turned-teen will be learning that money does not grow on trees and if she wants it she needs to earn it. In teen speak, ‘life sucks’.

Get organised early this summer – it really is worth it. In buying school uniform remember that the cheapest might not always be the best quality. Some skirts or trousers can look shoddy after a few washes – so it can be a better investment to spend a little more for something that will last the year. But whatever about school clothes, one item of uniform that you can’t afford to stint on is a properly-fitted pair of school shoes. On average children take between 10,000 and 16,000 steps per day. They don’t just walk in their shoes; they skip, run, kick, climb, skid, slide, splash and do emergency stops. A shoddy uniform won’t harm them but ill-fitting shoes can damage their developing feet.

BACK TO SCHOOL

Toddlers under the age of three should have their feet measured every 4-6 weeks and primary age children should have their feet measured every 8-12 weeks. You certainly won’t need a new pair of shoes each time, but children’s feet have growth spurts so it is important to keep a check on it. Trained fitters, like those at Cooshoo in Kings Heath, will tell you whether or not your children’s shoes are a good fit. You can’t be sure of that when your child tries on a pair of offthe-shelf shoes in a non specialist shop. I found this out the hard way when the casual boots I bought for my daughter that seemed perfect in the shop were abandoned as just too uncomfortable to wear because she has a broad foot. Now I only buy fitted footwear, whether they are the school shoes she spends most of her time wearing, or non school shoes or sandals. Once school uniform is sorted, don’t forget to name everything. That way when it gets lost (as it inevitably will during the year) it will bounce back to you. Nothing is so frustrating – or hard on the pocket - than having to buy yet another jumper because it got lost in the school zone!

Catch these three little piggies before they head to the West End

B

e the first to see this new show for children, The Three Little Pigs, when it opens in Birmingham this summer prior to a West End season.

The cast has a celebrity line up including Britain’s Got Talent semifinalist Alison Jiear, who will join Simon Webb from pop band Blue in Stiles and Drewe’s Three Little Pigs. Discover how these three little porkers become world renowned celebrity superstars when forced to leave the warmth of their mother’s overcrowded sty. Will the three little piggies cope without their mother’s adoring ‘hogs and kisses’; will they be able to stand on their own four trotters; and will their DIY building skills ensure they outwit the big, bad wolf? The show by the award-winning writers of Mary Poppins and Honk is sure to appeal to little ones and have them squealing in delight. The big bad wolf can huff and he can puff but he won’t get the better of these three little superstar piglets! Stiles and Drew say: “Most children will know the story of The Three Little Pigs so our job has been to reinvent it in a theatrical way, with hummable, memorable song that will appeal to the whole family. Our three little pigs – Bar, who loves to exercise; Bee who is “green” to the core; and Q, the insatiable bookworm, learn to work as a team to defeat the Big Bad (but possibly misunderstood) Wolf.
